The review on Amazon for Feast is not good. I'm not happy that neither Tyrion or Daenerys is in this book...

Has anyone read the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen books? I know the movie got bashed really bad.

I haven't read Watchmen, but of course I've heard the praise. It's on my wish list, although I'm not going for the $75 "Absolute" edition that just came out (or is coming out shortly).

League is also on my list. Can't go by the movie. It was panned almost universally by the comics fans as being nowhere near like the comic was, and I believe Moore disassociated himself with it completely because it was so bad.

I think im gonna pick these up, but was wondering if there are any other ones people know of. They look to be done by Topis Entertainment, except the Fantastic 4 one which is listed as being done by marvel.

anyway, if people know more about these, and if there are any others information would be greatly appreciated. Id love to find ones for Captain America, Wolverine, Hulk, Batman, Superman (dont know if DC has these)

thanks,

Hey DS...

Thanks for the info. Actually, I was wondering when they'd come out with more, as the Spidey one seemed to be quite successful.

As I've said on this in the past, I'm split on this issue. I think it's a great, cheap alternative to buying 1 volume of Essential whatever (in b&w) for $23 w/tax, but I do think it loses something in not having the book actually in my hand. That being said, it's also a tremendous space-saving way to go.

If Marvel's doing it with great success, I would think DC will have no choice, although I've not heard anything specific about any other titles.

Ric...

There are no words for this. I am genuinely saddened by your news. Even though we frequently disagree on things, I consider you a friend on this board. Know that you and yours are in my thoughts. I've not been feeling well the past couple of days (for whatever reasons), and won't be around much in the next few. I wish you...strength, if nothing else. While I do not think a better world will suddenly appear, I hope that one day we can all share a drink in happier times.

Well, I think any system they put in place will be useless without enforcement. I mean, it can't get much clearer than a single letter rating, followed by a brief description of the content (Drug use, sexual content, etc). It's incumbent on the theaters to ask for id, and prevent people who shouldn't be in there from getting in there.

The generation (dare I call us the Star Wars generation) that spent the most disposable income on movies a few years ago is getting older and having kids.

With surging ticket & concession prices, it's becoming less economically feasible to hire a sitter and go to the movies. Especially when the time away from home is being unnecessarily extended by 20 minutes of commercials (!!!) and previews before the movie begins. For those with kids old enough to go to the movies, the ticket & concession prices alone make it a bad deal economically when you can wait four months for the DVD.

Then we have to deal with the idiots in the row behind who are dragging kids too young to a movie (my greatest horror story was sitting next to the couple who brought a toddler to see Jackie Brown) or chatting on their cell phones, disrupting the film for everybody around.

DVD sales are going gangbusters because it lets the entire family watch repeatedly in the comfort of their own home, on their own schedule, in theater-quality sound without those annoying "other people" ruining the experience.

If the theaters wish to get serious about courting people, it all boils down to sacrificing the profit margin in favor of increasing the bottom line. The following suggestions will improve profits if theater owners would have the brains and balls to implement them:

1) Cut matinee prices in half and expect greater than a 100% increase in ticket buyers.
2) Enforce age minimums for non-children's films.
3) Kick out families with disruptive children and kick out anybody who takes a phone call during the film.
4) Make 2-for-1 "Date Deals" for non-peak evenings like Monday and Tuesday.
5) Offer free tickets for parents who bring 1 or more children to a children's movie.
6) Cut the price of concessions. $6.75 for a regular hot dog and a soda is ridiculous. $4.50 for popcorn is insane. Offer a better selection at a reasonable price.

If theater owners did this, would you be more likely to attend? Feel free to copy these suggestions verbatim and send them to your local theater. I'm gonna do that myself.

Dude, you could copy this and send it to every major studio/distribution head. EXACTLY what needs to happen.

Heh...Amazing how quickly the blossom falls off the rose in the beginning of the relationship. I got along great with them in the beginning. After that, it was all down-hill.

I should clarify that I have "situational" anxiety. Meaning, I feel fine most of the time, until I...go to work. Or have to go to a social function. Or have to deal with my in-laws. That type of thing. I've never been diagnosed with fully-blown generalized anxiety.

It's more of a social anxiety then, right? I'm a bit like that too, but for other reasons (asperger's) .

I would say it tends more towards that, correct. However, the workplace piece of the puzzle is the worst, because I....work for someone who is just like a psychological vampire. Totally saps my will to live, and they are a family member, so I've still got to live with it outside work.

Please do excuse me if I'm being inquisitive, or asking personal stuff you rather not discussed at an open forum, but what would be the difference between a workplace anxiety, and regular anxiety? Is it related and/or happens only to the workplace? (I too suffer from a few conditions, so I know how that is, belive me)

A. People don't go to movies because they're tired of inner-city morons bringing their 1 year old to an R-Rated movie and letting them scream

B. Farenheit 9/11 pissed off too many people

C. The movies suck (see above)

D. We're tired of the following formulaic cliche crap in our movies: car chases, explosions seen blocks away by shooting a gas tank with a bb-gun, crippled gay-black police captain who's always yelling at his idiot white cops who don't play by the rules, latina tough-girl who weighs 75lbs soaking wet who can kick any man's a## with her bare hands, conservative bashing, military bashing, evil corporations, government cover-ups, etc etc etc.

E. I keep seeing more and more commercials, yet my ticket prices are continuing to rise

These were some of the earlier anime inspired cartoons to hit America. Especially BOTP, which was on in the mid-late 70's. Voltron came on around 1984 and was very popular. It revolved around a group of teen-agers being recruited to pilot 5 robotic lions that could join to form a giant robot and fight the forces of a guy named Prince Lo-tor and his evil witch. Very cool, however after the second season they came out with a different version that was much more Asian (it just didn't "work" for American audiences) and it didn't last much longer than that.

Isn't Battle of the Planets that one in which they dressed like birds or something?

Yes. Their uniforms did look like birds. If you've ever seen Teen Titans when Robin's riding his motorcycle, that pretty much looks like it.

does anyone know exaxtly how long the simpsons has been on t.v., I mean theres tons of seasons and new episodes all the time. When did the first tracy ullman shorts come out?

The show has been on it's own since 1989. Not sure how long it was on Ullman prior to that. So I guess that makes it 17 seasons counting the current run. I think they'll be up around 390 episodes when this season's over. Looooong run. Too bad the last 200 have all s#cked.

I belive it was shown as small short sequences on Tracy Ullman from 1987 to 1989, and from 1989 as the series we know. It's VERY weird to watch a first season episode, which focus on a klasky-csupo-esque family satire realistic comedy, and watch a recent episode which focus on surrealist gag comedy...

And also the animation style is vastly different, and the voice acting. I really can't get any enjoyment out of 1st season episodes anymore. I would say it really became the show I loved during the 3rd season, and died for me around the 10th or 11th.

It keeps track of all the information on the dvd (disc art, features, aspect ratio etc) and lets you insert where and for how much you got it as well as other personalized information.

you can see my dvd profiler page here and there is a user interface that you install on you're desktop to update the information. That list is from when you upload you're collection.

though, this 40 years of spiderman disc sounds interesting. do you have information on where to get it?

DOH!! Now I feel like an idiot.

OK...

The Spidey cd/dvd is available from Amazon, or CompUSA...almost anywhere they have a substantial collection of software for sale. Think it's like $30. I'm probably just going to get the Essentials collection from Marvel. Not in color, but I still have to have the book in my hands.

*Edit*...For now I'll be sticking with my database as opposed to an on-line list. I use a RAD tool from Alpha Software that is very powerful. I can customize alerts, build custom browses, all kinds of stuff. It's a killer RAD tool, that also allows you to create web dbs. Check it out.
