LOL!! I'm vegetarian, but PETA even annoy me, and that was damn funny.

Anyway, I hate that I'm at work on my birthday, none of my "friends" remembered (not even a bloody e-mail), and basically I'm a year older with nothing to show for it.

Yeah, I understand that one. When you're younger it's a lot different at birthdays and holidays.

I would too (by the way, it's Spookyphone 2000 now, not Spiricom ). But I wouldn't use t, I would hire someone to use it, and then ask him how it was. If I used it myself, by the time I got my first "hello" from a dead guy I would scream and turn the thing out of the plug. "Gaaah that was too scary! Why did I build that damn thing!?"

But, is there any reasons to fear it? I mean, if those "spirits" are real, what can they do to us? Harm us in which way, besides scaring us?

There are cases in which people are sorely abused by these entities. Probably the most famous case being The Bell Witch. I've done a great deal of reading on that particular case and believe it to have been quite real. Also, there is a place in the state where I live that has a long history of malevolent things happening to the people who would go there to "see" the spirits. The state police now arrest anyone trying to go there.

Cool. Thanks for the idea. Now all I have to do is find someone who carries it.

Another one:

Same thing about my dad's family...very old school, very hard nosed. They lived in a house during WWII that was a two-family house. The owners were Italian and they got along very well with eachother. Anyway, the house was haunted. I heard my grandmother and dad tell on multiple occasions that there was something "wrong" there. For example, my grandmother put a statue of Mary in their bedroom, and one night my grandfather woke up and saw a dark figure wearing a shroud praying to the statue, at which point he spoke to it but then immediately was forced back to sleep.

My grandparents would tell the landlords about it, and they would never believe it. However, one night they did hear something and the oldman retrieved his shotgun and told his wife to open the door and get out of the way because the noise was right outside the door. She did so and there was nothing there. My dad also had an uncle who boarded with them for a time that had some bad experiences. He got some holy water from a local church and sprinkled it in the house, at which time the disturbances stopped, however they eventually returned. My dad also had an incident when everyone else was on vacation and he was alone for the week. One night he was walking home and he knew that all the lights had been left off. When he got close to the house all the lights were on, then he could not look at the house because he knew that he was being watched.

At my grandmother's funeral in 95, my dad's other uncle, who was very intelligent, softspoken and not given to making things up was talking to my dad in one of the rooms in the funeral home. I myself heard them start talking about the house when the uncle said to my dad "You know, that place was haunted". My dad almost started crying and said "We thought we were the only ones who believed it". He had a VAST look of relief in his face and you could hear it in his voice. I was shocked to hear this.

Keep in mind that with the exception of that particular incident, they told me these things 40 years later after the house was long gone, but I heard it from multiple people on multiple occasions. Also, my dad still has terrifying nightmares about the house.

YIYF is correct. Only like the top 5% of writers can afford to do it full time.

I have done some writing, however I've always fallen out of the routine. It takes a LOT of discipline to sit down and write. I used to try to get at least 3 pages a day, which isn't much but it is if you're sitting there banging away at keys and trying to come up with ideas. Believe it or not, I had what I considered a perfect match in terms of what I'd like to write, and what I thought I could write for the past couple of months, and actually began to do research on my subject. Then I went in to a book store and saw two new books on the subject. My heart sank.

I've always believed that I have the talent to write but I've NEVER had the discipline.

I still remember most of it today and often impress people with my wine knowledge (most people just grab whattever from the supermarket and don't really understand it). I don't drink anymore, and the only thing I miss is the occasional glass of good wine. Are you a red or a white man Sage? I'm definitely a red fan.

My favourites are (or were) pretty much any Chilean Merlot or, if I was having white, I used to enjoy a South African Chardonnay called 'Arniston Bay' (great with ANY seafood). Bulgaria also made some good reds, and at the time I was working, Australian wines were the big thing, but things change so quickly and a country that was producing good wine a year ago might not be anymore, so I guess none of that really helps.

I haven't really tried any whites yet. Before I started trying to learn about it, I used to just buy Merlot because it was a good match for a lot of foods. I bought a bottle of Valdevieso Merlot around Christmas. That is Chilean although I have not yet opened it.

I'm trying to think of a good wine for beef, although I'm difficult in that regard in that it seems like almost all wines demand rare beef. I can't have even a HINT of pink in my meat. Must be well done.

It was when I was at university. I lived with 2 guys and two girls, plus myself. One of the guys was my buddy Noel, who I have known since I was about 14 and by chance (or perhaps it wasn't chance...?) ended up going to the same university, getting put in the same dorm and then moved in together. Anyway, my point is this: I trust Noel 100%.

So, Noel and myself, plus Noel's then-girlfriend who was into all that spooky stuff and seemed to know what she was doing, decided to do the ouija board. We managed to convince the 2 girls we lived with (Sarah and Hannah) to join in.

Now, I didn't think anything was gonna happen, but then the bloody coin starts moving. Of course, I thought it was all bullshit and someone (probably Noel) was fucking around. But he denied it and said I was fucking around. The girls also thought we were fucking around. After a few 'converstaions' with 'spirits' I said 'right, who the fuck is moving that coin cos it's not funny anymore', but still noone would admit it. Like I said, I trust Noel, so the girls stopped touching the coin and left just me and him with our fingers on it (and by on it, I mean BARELY touching - not enough to even move the coin, just touching it very very very lightly).

So now it's just me and Noel, with the girl's watching, and we ask if there are any spirits who want to talk, and the coin moves to Yes. I still think Noel is fucking around and he still thinks I am. Then we ask who the message is for, and it spells out 'Sarah'. I still think Noel is fucking around. We ask who the spirit is and it says 'uncle'. By this point, Sarah is clearly scared and me and Noel are both saying 'it's not me'. Sarah asks a few questions and I repeated them for the benefit of the 'spirit' (I can't remeber exactly what the questions were - stuff only she would no, and mainly yes or no stuff) but apparently the spirit got all the answers right. Finally, she told me to ask the spirit his real name, and the coin starts to move. First it goes to B - sarah looks shocked, next it moves to E - Sarah is still looking amazed. Eventually it spells out BERNARD (Which was her dead uncle's name and there is no way me or Noel could know that) and she starts crying. That was too much for me and Noel so we both taook our hands off the coin. Fucked up shit man - to this day Noel swears it wasn't him and I swear it's all real.

I've done a lot of reading on hauntings and this type of stuff for a good portion of my life. Ouija boards are BAD news. They open doors to things, and the doors are not always easily closed.

My father's family were from Pennsylvania, both my grandparents were born in 1908. Very old-school Irish coal-mining family. They moved to southern New England in about 1942. There used to be a lake in our town that is now closed off. My father and his friends would swim in this lake when they were in their early teens. One of my dad's friends had some mental problems and as a result was very....developmentally slower than everyone else. One day during the summer the boy's mother and my dad's mother were talking at my grandparent's house and the boy's mom had just had to pay a lot of money for major car repairs, and their luck in general was bad. In a fit of anger the woman looked to the sky and said "What MORE can you take from me??". Later that day, her boy drowned in the lake. My dad was only 12 I think, and he actually went into the water to retreive him. My dad kind of looked out for the boy, and before he went swimming he turned to my dad and said "I'll see you soon, friend" and my dad never saw him alive again. To this day, and he's 69 now, he gets tears in his eyes when he thinks of it. Here's the real rub:

A few years after it happened, the boy's mother and my grandmother decided to use a ouija board to try to speak to him. During the session contact was established, and the mother asked what happened. The response was "I got tired". This immediately freaked them out and they stopped using it. My grandmother had a rocking chair in her living room. The same night the board was resting against this chair. My grandparents were awakened from a sound sleep by noise and they went in to the living room and saw the chair rocking back and forth rapidly. My grandfather didn't belive in ANYTHING supernaturual, however he was sufficiently frightened to break the board in half then burn it that same night.

Very, very scary. Please, don't anyone use one of those damn things!!

I've recently begun to appreciate wine. For most of my life I didn't like it at all, and am trying to educate myself on the subject. A good resource is Wine.com (they offer monthly wine clubs, as well and an awesome selection). I'm just wondering if anyone's got a favorite wine? What do you eat with it? Have you ever been to a winery?

I opened a bottle of Ruffino Chianti, 2004 over the weekend. Believe it or not, I paired it with some ziti and marinara with some red pepper and bread. It was OUTSTANDING. Nice and sweet. Excllent Italian table wine.

As Americans we're apparently required to hate the rest of the world.

Don't know if anyone else heard but Rachel Weisz is pregnant with her first child. Congrats, Rach!

I think Michelle Williams could breast feed the third world. Man, she is a beauty.

I've heard of Image, never really read any of their stuff. Newsarama.com usually has info on them...

Is anyone reading 7 Soldiers? I picked up the 1st TPB yesterday.

Five out of Five of my favorite movies of this year are already available in at least two other formats:

Batman Begins
Serenity (Firefly TV show and comics)
Hitchhiker's Guide (Novels, BBC show, radio drama)
King Kong (based on a little known picture from the first half of the century)
Narnia (BBC Drama, cartoon, Novels)

True, my point was that in general the quality of the talent can't get any worse...

NOW, I'M ENJOYING IT COMMERCIAL AND WAIT FREE.

I used to be an Alias nut back in the day. IMO, seasons 1 & 2 (especially 2) were some of the best tv I've ever seen. Season 3 took a major detour and blew cheese, again IMO. Season 4 was a minor improvement, but by the end it was obvious to me that the magic was gone. I watched the first 2 eps of this year and have never gone back. Too bad. It was really special for a while...

Didn't know if I should put this here or give it it's own thread, but... aw hell I'll just stick it here.

There's a new He-Man & The Masters of the Universe film adaptation slated for 2006 so says Internet Movie Database, to be directed by John Woo, starring John Glover as Skeletor, and at the moment simply titled He-Man. It was rumored that a fellow named Jason Lewis was up for the role of He-Man but so far no one seems to be officially pegged for the part.

So... will this be a great return for one of the great icons of the 1980s or will it just be a horrible mess?

I predict the latter. Hollywood is given waaaaaay too much latitude when it comes to messing with existing properties. If they have their way, we'll get Casablanca with swords...

It also seems that the only things left for them to do are comic book movies, video game movies, or movies based on cancelled tv shows these days. Hard to believe that that city was once home to Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Cagney, Bogart, etc.

I saw another one the other day where Stewie is trying to avoid his first birthday party so he goes to an airport. One of the pilots talks with him and convinces him to face his problems. So Stewie says something like "As for you, kind sage, I give you the gift of thinking about your good deed for years while stuck in FROZEN CARBONITE!!" and blasts him with a carbonite gun. Was rolling...

Deer: "Yes but I still want to get your record file..."
Peter: "But it's not even..."
Deer: "I know I know I just feel more secure if I have your record."

ROTFLOL! Classic.

Or about when they were talking about WASPS, originally meant as the insects, then they switch to a scene of a rich family at a dinner table. The husband says something nasty, then the wife says "I do know about civility at the dinner table", then the husband says to the daughter "Dear, did you know your mother is a whore?".

Also, who can forget those EPIC fights with the chicken? That rules. They interviewed one of the writers on the local radio station here about a month ago. He said they just kind of threw in the first one as a lark, but got such a large reaction from the audience that they decided to do it again.
