Announcing: OT.Com Online Chess Tournament
Time
For anyone who hasn't checked out the "Any Chess Players Out There?" thread lately, we're trying to put together a tournament. Right now, it looks like the games will be played at The Scheming Mind internet chess site. Scheming Mind allows people to sign up for a free account and play up to 20 games simultaneously and join 1 "mini-tournament". You're presented with a chess board after colors are agreed upon, then you enter your move with your mouse. Each person is notified via email when it's their turn. Time controls still need to be agreed on, but I think we're leaning towards 30 days/+1 day per move.

I hope to get 8 people to join so we can play two "quads", meaning players 1-4 each play eachother once, and the same for 5-8, with the two best records playing eachother for the OT title! I haven't worked out draws yet. I'll be setting up the tournament asap.

If there is someone willing to play, you decide who's the white and who's the black, and white starts. You could declare your movement in the "classic" way, like, Nf3, Nh6, or by the letters and numbers method, like A2-A3, or A2xB3. What do you think?

I think the best way to do this would be to move it to the Scheming Mind website. It is ready made for online "correspondence" chess, and games can be made public for viewing. It also has a GUI based on an internet chessboard standard that allows drag/drop or click based moves and keeps a history. This is where Warbler and I just played...Thoughts? If you agree, you can get a free account, and try to keep your OT.com usernames, if possible. Unfortunately I signed up a year ago so my name is KingsClash. Let me know.

Sage's Rant of the Moment
Time
Ask and you shall receive...

I'm tired of hearing about how the illegal aliens are "...doing the jobs that Americans won't do". This is code for "Works for less than minimum wage". Why are we not focusing on the companies that are violating state and Federal labor laws by paying less than the minimum? Why are these businesses not being fined and employers thrown in jail? Make a public example of some of these people, and the labor market for illegals will dry up.

Until a real return system is created, those illegals who are still in the country will continue to go on the public payroll via "entitlement" programs such as welfare, free healthcare, free education, and receive driver's licenses. They will further depress wages and take jobs from people who play by the rules, and contribute to political and social unrest by refusing to adapt to American culture (Mexican flags, anyone?).

I'm not anti-immigration. I'm anti-ILLEGAL immigration. Something needs to be done about this, and I can see it coming to a head very soon, especially in an election year. More than that, I believe that this is the #1 issue facing America today...more so than the War on Terror. We are sitting next to a bubbling cauldron of seething rage, and it will eventually get knocked over and burn us all.

MSN's "Do nice guys always finish last?"
Time
I was the bad boy right out of high school and into my mid-twenties. Then I settled down. Without exaggerating, I used to exude confidence and menace, and my date book usually reflected that. I pretty much didn't care who I pissed off, played highly aggressive in sports, rose to positions of authority in my various employments, had a ton of friends and even more enemies. However, the game got old and so did I. I calmed down, and as a result married a girl I met when I was working at a fast-food restaurant during my early college days and we've been together for 11 years, married 8. I've kind of picked up on her wanting a little of the old me on occasion, and I've tried to oblige. One thing I never understand is why, WHY do they go for the guy that treats them like dirt? I never did that, no matter how much of an a-hole I was back then.

Anyone going to pick up the 44 years of Fantastic Four DVD-ROM? I heard Marvel did a much better job on this one than the Spidey one. The reviews on Amazon are good. I tell you, if they keep doing this and other companies follow their lead, it will KILL the back-issue market more than it already is.

Apparently all five Hellboy trades are worth getting, so I guess you should get them all in order. Though I hear that Right Hand of Doom is the best one. There's also the Hellboy Junior trade, which I guess would be chronologically first, and is supposed to be a real fun read. All hearsay from me, though, I've never read a Hellboy comic in my life...

I'll keep that in mind.

Sadly I think the Hellboy movie ruined me for the comic...GOD AWFUL.

You really disliked it that much? I thought it was pretty good. I mean it had Ron friggin' Pearlman in it!

I agree about Pearlman...definitely cool actor as well as the voice of Slade for God's sake! However, I just could not do the movie for some reason. I think the premise of secret occult observation society is cliched, and the Hellboy twist was meh...pedestrian IMO. The whole thing about him being in love with Selma Blair just didn't do it for me.

Let me tell you something. American's don't know s**t about chocolate. Hersheys SUCKS. As a result, your Twixs suck, your snickers suck, even your mini eggs suck compared to English versions. Cadburys chocolate rules, and don't even get me started on Galaxy chocolate because if you tasted that your head would explode. I gave some to a friend of mine in LA and he actually used the word 'orgasmic'. Man, I'm gonna miss that stuff. I no longer drink, smoke, or take drugs, but chocolate is my one vice, and I can't satisfy my needs with crappy Hersheys.

Looks like I'm gonna be getting my Mum to send me packages regularly.

Hey YIYF...a Cadbury-Schweppes factory used to be about a mile from my house before it was bought out by Hershey's. They make the Peter-Paul/Mounds candy bars. Now I tell my kids Willy Wonka lives there...

Actually, I know Hershey is very run-of-the-mill. I'm not big on chocolate in the first place, but if I do buy it, I get Godiva or Lindt.

Star Trek DS9
Time
I grew up a huge Trek fan, in pretty much all it's incarnations save Voyager and all but the last season of Enterprise. I thought at the time that DS9 was the best of the spin-offs.

However, I've become quite jaded about the Trek spinoffs since I started watching the new Battlestar Galactica. I realize now what the spinoffs could have been had they been in someone else's hands. The formula of: Earth's a utopia because everyone lets the Federation run their lives and gave up their material posessions to the collective good, combined with the "reset button" ending where none of the characters grew or changed (was it REALLY necessary to bring in Ezri Dax), the ENDLESS techno-babble, the BS plot device of the holo-decks (how many times can the safety protocols fail before there's a recall???), the equivocation....really screwed the show, IMO. I usually won't watch the shows unless I'm really desperate.

Hopefully when it comes back in 10 years or so they'll give it to Manny Coto, who did the last season of Enterprise, or J. Michael Straczynski, who did Babylon 5.

Oh yeah, and no matter how much I'm down on the franchise right now, IMO Garak was the best character except maybe Worf and Data in any of the spinoffs.
