Net Neutrality or SAVE THE INTERNET!!
Time
What should be of greater concern is that the UN is trying to get hold of the internet root servers. The implications on free speech alone are chilling, considering we're talking about an organization that has had Syria on it's Human Rights panels in the past.

The US taxpayers funded the creation and evolution of the internet via DARPA and the university system. We rightfully control it for now and should continue to do so until someone can pry our fingers off of it. Businesses and foreign governments should worry about their own servers.

I was talking with an employee at the local game store about Revolution and Sony. He was saying that there will only be about 1 million PS3's available at time of ship, as opposed to 3 million for 360, so that might hurt them and it's already rumored to be more expensive than the 360.

I think the Wii will be Nintendo's greatest achievement since the NES and I'm dying to get my hands on it...

Have any of you guys been fired before?

Got fired from a plastics company many, many years ago for telling my boss to fuck off and that if he was going to carry on trying to physically intimidate me and spread lies about my 'appalling behaviour and attitude' to fellow workmates that I'd simply prove him wrong by phoning for ambulance right then to take him to hospital for after I'd finished with him.

Not proud of my actions - but at the time it was the only thing I could think of to end a fairly miserable time working with him. I suppose in the end he was right about my bad attitude - in the end.

Emotionally I was a rollercoster for a couple of weeks after - did knock my confidence a little - but got over it soon after.

Chin up, Invader Jenny - 'tis just a job after all - only a small part of life, and possibly a job you may not even remember in a few weeks...

I threatened a co-worker in front of our customers at a restaurant I was working in a loooooong time ago. He was constantly baiting me. I apologized to my boss for making him look bad, but I never got in trouble for it because the guy was a moron.

Just a general question. I know that people get fired from time to time. Due to lay-offs or negligance, but who here as actually been fired before? What's your story and how did it happen?

Mine's not too terribly funny, but I did get fired yesterday. Nice.

I'm (well was, I guess) a receptionist/secretary who had been working there for a year and I got fired yesterday. Not because I'm horrible or anything, but because "it just wasn't working out." Oooookay. I kind of expected this (there were hints and all), but wow talk about being blind sighted.

But the funny part is that technically I was fired yesterday, though I still get to show up for work for the next 2 days because I need the money. After that I'm done. I guess I should be wearing a shirt that says "Dead Man Walking," huh?

Now I need to find a new job for the summer. Hmm...

Never been fired fired, but I did get laid-off in 03. Made it to the last 3 people of 12 and they canned me the day we returned from Christmas break. Of course I got another job within 5 days and have been there since. You never know. It could be a positive for you. Always keep trying. I know it's hard.

I'm reading "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash" by Jean Shepherd. I like savoring what I'm reading, so I take it much slower. For a while I couldn't read anything because school reading burned me off of all books for a long time. I used to LOVE reading. I want to feel that way again.

I would love to read that book. It's the basis for A Christmas Story, the movie, correct? That guy had a knack for hitting things on the head.

I have the same problem with movies. I know WAAY too much useless trivia about movies.

Yeah, but I usually remember it within seconds of seeing/hearing it if I'm paying enough attention...

Then again, since I'm hoping to get into the film industry, I guess it's good to know the field.

Good luck! If you ever need a lackey to run your studio's IT dept, send me a PM!!!!

wow how do you read more than one book at a time and keep all those stories straight! i normally only like reading one book at a time as i normally get really into them.

I have better than average memory and reading/retention skills. It's never been formally tested but someone close to me has a Bachelor's in Experimental Psych and is quite well versed in learning, etc who has told me as much as well as a former Behavioral Psych teacher who said my memory was "remarkable".

As one of my favorite fictional characters, Adrian Monk, says: It's a blessing...and a curse. I tend to remember a lot of minutia that I should probably let go of. For instance I can tell you a lot of useless facts about when a lot of tv shows were produced, which episodes were made when, etc. Of course it hasn't made me rich yet!

Currently reading The Dead Zone, by Stephen King; Dune by Frank Herbert (finally slugged my way to around page 150), Stardust by Neil Gaiman (fantastic as always); One Hell of a Gamble: Kruschev, Kennedy, and the Cuban Missle Crisis (excellent!); and am re-reading A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin (best fantasy series I've ever read. Period). Next I want to pick up The Sword and the Shield, which is a history of the KGB.

HOW IS FIRST CONTACT BAD!!!!

exactly, first contact is a really solid movie.

I didn't say it was *bad* and if by solid you mean 'not total crap' then sure. I saw it in the theater thinking 'meh that was entertaining for the last last two hours' but found it totally forgettable after the fact. I personally saw nothing incredibly moving about it as a movie- I saw it as more of a decent episode of the TV series, albeit a long one.

But on par with 'Kahn'? Not in my opinion. But you know what they say about opinions.

To quote Max Von Sydow from Needful Things..."Finally. A man with some sense"

First Contact was good when it first came out as a space action movie. Now...who CARES???? It had a mediocre story that suffered from the same crap that ruined the franchise: Reset button ending, socialist worldview "everything was great once we gave up all our possessions" diatribe from Picard, bad acting (Troi's drunk scene was embarassingly bad), Time Travel AGAIN, Borg becoming a paper-tiger enemy, etc etc etc.

Generations was better than FC and it was pedestrian at best.

I imagine that since the characters are portrayed as being younger, they will have different actors playing the parts.
That is obvious...

Perhaps I should rephrase:
Can you tell me what current actor you could see playing Kirk?
Can you tell me what current actor you could see playing Spock?

See, I believe that the performances are so unique and defined already that either there will be no success finding actors to fill the roles OR they will butcher the roles to fit the actors they find.

I will have a difficult time seeing someone else play these roles, and I understand the necessity of it given the story. This was not the way to go, IMO, especially because Paramount yanked Enterprise last year stating the franchise was suffering from fatigue. Should wait until 2010, then go in a completely new direction, including tossing the canon of the spinoff series' out the window along with the utopian worldview crap...wipe out the Federation and have to build from square one again.

I'm also leaning towards the following. Please, please tell me if you don't like the conditions or feel something's unfair. I don't want anyone to feel like they're being dragged into anything.

If, If we get 8 people, we play two quads as stated above. I'll put the 8 player names into a box or something and assign them numbers, then pull them out and "randomize" them as nums 1-8. Players 1-4 each play eachother, as do 5-8. Players with the best record in both quads to play for the championship. 1 win = 1 point, draws being .5 points with immediate rematch.

To assign colors, I'll put two names for each person in the box, one being labeled white the other black, and draw them until I get a matchup. So, for example I'll assign Sage, Player #2 White and Sage, Player #2 Black, then draw another name based on whichever one comes out with my name.

I know I'm giving this waaaaay too much thought but I want it to be fair for everyone and for us to have a good time.

If nobody has objections, I'll try to hold off for about 2 weeks or so to give people time to settle down from whatever they're doing right now. This will give people who have time an opportunity to get familiar with the site and maybe play a couple of practice games and warm up, and maybe we'll get a few more players involved. Thoughts?

Shim: Have you discussed this with HLF?
