The X-Files - Worth Watching?

For somebody that's never seen the series, the best way to do it may very well be to get the DVD sets and watch the whole series pretty quickly. That way you'll avoid the frustration and confusion that many viewers felt as the mythology unfolded, a few episodes at a time, over several years. For most of the time it was on, it was one of my 2 or 3 favorite shows.

I could never justify the prices for the first releases, but the new ThinPaks-in-a-sleeve sets are decent enough that I'm probably gonna start collecting them soon.

Yeah, I noticed on Amazon the thin ones are going for between $25 & $30 used, which I won't feel too guilty about.

The X-Files - Worth Watching?

I never really watched The X-Files when it was on...maybe an episode here or there. I'm considering getting the dvd sets, but wanted to solicit opinions. Do you think it's worth it? I remember a lot of people being torqued off because the ending still left some loose ends and such. Is it worth my time & money to get involved in the show?

Thanks for any info.

I was at work when I heard what was happening. I went to the cafeteria to get some breakfast when I saw a HUGE number of people watching the televisions in there, more than should have been that early in the morning. I saw it. Called my wife to tell her what was going on. Then as I was getting ready to call a buddy of mine at home (he was out sick) when he sent me an email saying we were under attack.

I went home for the rest of the day and tried to get news from wherever I could, including radio. It was a 50 minute drive home and all the stations were carring the news. I remember hearing them say that NATO had invoked Article 5 of the treaty, and I was wondering just how big it was going to be. Very scary.

Well, I really haven't heard or read anything from him for a long time, so I can't comment on that...

I'm sure you've heard some pretty outrageous things from Rush, but he doesn't mean for everything he says to be taken literally. He's an entertainer, not a reporter.

Wow. I didn't realize he was more of an entertainer than a reporter. That been put, I guess I shouldn't say anything about him on that sense...

Rush is an editorialist, and has never promoted himself as a reporter or journalist. Most people know where he's coming from, some don't. If someone's never actually listened to him I can understand if they didn't "get" that.

That being said, I do listen to him to be entertained as he does some funny song parodies and such. You've got to hear his "commercial" from the Democratic National Committee (think that's who they said) about Tom DeLay being from Texas: "...and you KNOW what THAT means". LOL

Forgot about this thread.

Answer = Yes, although not by much. TwT is my second.

Top 10 ST eps, any series:

City on the Edge of Forever

Trouble with Tribbles

Best of Both Worlds I & II (two parters to be treated as 1 ep)

The Sacrifice of Angels (SPOILER** DS9, Sisko and company re-take the station after 6 episode arc with the Dominion in charge, Dukat's daughter bites it)

Broken Link (SPOILER** Odo's shapeshifting ability is taken away)

In Purgatory's Shadow, By Inferno's Light (Worf, Garak, and Bashir on Dominion prison asteriod, Worf must fight, 2 part ep)

The Visitor (Jake Sisko ages after his father has his accident, tries to rescue him)

Endgame (last ep of Voyager)

Arena (Kirk vs Gorn, doesn't get any better)

What You Leave Behind (two part DS9 finale)

Not sure where I land on this. I'm a big believer in due process, however the rules of the game have changed. Very difficult to say and it's a slippery slope.

Well, there's another issue that gets confused. I believe due process extends to citizens, but not to aliens. I don't think we should be "disappearing" our citizens, but as for aliens, screw 'em.

True. Where that gets tricky is, if a foreign national comes here legally and becomes a citizen, then turns out to be a suspected terrorist. That could get ugly.

The Silmarillion is unfinished. Therefore, it lacks that polish and cohesiveness. I personally found it a real chore to read, but not bad looking back on it. Not sure I'd read it again, though. Being that it has a slow building plot, few characters that continue throughout the entire book, and no real hero, at least not one who is in the entire book, I don't see how anyone can do a mini-series with it.

I'd like to see a mini (maxi?) series on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series...that would be cool!

Well, I only care about the space story because it has Starfire in it. SHE MUST LIVE... Otherwise it is pretty boring so far.

I'm enjoying 52. It's not perfect, and it's no Kingdom Come, but it's a solid book and it comes out every week. Hard not to like... well, it's not cheap to pay for it four times a month, but...

I'm still eager for Civil War to pick up again. Very cool so far, although I'm still waiting for one of the Marvel writers to have enough guts to have one of the characters question whether or not ANY type of government registration program actually works instead of just whether it's right or wrong.

Have you been reading the new Flash series? Good so far, although I was a little disturbed by ish #3 with pictures of Che Guverra and Mexican Flag posters on one of the character's walls. Keeps up I'll drop it...

I hope he actually keeps Ian Holm, Ian McK, Hugo Weaving and Andy Serkis in the film too. I'd like a complete and total tie-in between the two.

Beyond that, I'm all for an HBO Miniseries for The Silmarillion produced by Jackson. Would that not be uber-cool?

Agreed on the casting. They did a good job making Holm look younger for the flashbacks in the beginning, so I hope they nab him.

Thoughts on 52 so far? Anyone?

**Possible Spoilers**

I couldn't care less about the Animal Man/Star Fire/Adam Strange storyline right now. Total write-off for me.

I like the Teth-Adam/Marvel family storyline in Khandaq. It'll be interesting to see where he stands at the end of all this.

Was surprised they killed Booster, though whether he stays dead is the big question.

Think the best story so far is the Luthor "everyman a super hero" one. Would like to see more of it.

Anyone reading anything new? I'm on a Stephen King kick right now.
I'm currently reading The Gunslinger and have The Drawing of the Three lined up for when I finish (which will probably be today)

A friend is a BIG King fan, especially The Dark Tower series. I'm going to finish 'Salem's Lot and then do The Stand so I can get into the Tower series. Lots to read...

For Parents: Letting Go
Time
Well, today was the first day of Kindergarten for my son. Not a good day for me. He's very timid and shy, not like my daughter who's the complete opposite and is already in second grade.

I hate having to let go, but realize I must. The time is here to trust them with strangers who will teach them things which are contrary to what we believe is right. We're trusting their safety to them. We're letting them out into the world.

Being a parent can have tremendous rewards, but it also has it's sh#t days as well...

God I'm depressed.

Rodenberry's vision, aside from being naive, is what destroyed the franchise. A story in which none of the characters are supposed to be in conflict with eachother because of the utopia the Federation has wrought leaves very little room for character development. Also, the "reset button" at the end of every episode was SO annoying.

I've been watching the TNG box sets recently (working on season 5 now), and there's plenty of conflict between various characters--even within the Federation itself.

It does tend to be episodic, but watching the show still has its rewards.

I thought DS9 was the best of them. Definitely worth watching, as is TNG in most cases. However, I guess I've just become jaded over the spin-offs given the awful direction they went in, combined with what's being done now with shows like Lost and BSG. None of the spin-offs ever approached the chemistry of the original with the "big 3" characters. I just can't get worked up while watching Picard and Data prancing around together in Sherwood Forrest.

I will say that the last year of Enterprise when Manny Coto took over from Braga was much better in terms of quality. Have you noticed how dated TNG seems now?
