Empire Mag's Greatest Films of All-Time (2 SW films in Top 10, guess which two?)
Time
I'd certainly agree that a truly good film is universal and timeless, but no one can agree on what that means. Some people simply don't like modern films because they're modern, and some people don't like older films because they're old.

I have a healthy appreciation for all fine film, at least I like to think so. When I look back on how I felt the first time I'd seen The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn, which was only just last year, it makes me smile. Made decades ago, but still a wonderful and amusing adventure film. And I love the colors from that era of filmmaking.

Any "of all time" film ranking is based on the lifespan and experience of the participants. If you've never seen Citizen Kane, it's easy to put LOTR higher on the list. This applies to older generations also. People who grew up watching the classics might not fully appreciate films like A Clockwork Orange or Donnie Darko, even if they're worthy of recognition on such lists.

In short, top film lists are 100% bullshit.

The question that remains is what kind of community does it bring together?

A very, very creative one, with far more positive results than negative. Legal or not, I don't see the harm of fan edits.

I'd like to voice my respect for Lucas on this issue. I disagree strongly with his decision to modify the original trilogy, but he has a progressive view of the web and what it means for creativity.

Did you know Lucas started out by making his own edits of Hollywood films? What if someone had come along and slapped him down then? Would A New Hope, which is a prime example of a film made better because of really good editing, have served as the seed for the entire Star Wars universe without Lucas' early experimentation?

Do you work for the MPAA? You seem to have adopted their logic: cut down the apple tree because a few of the apples are rotten. I suggest you visit one of the hundreds of dull, non-innovative Star Wars communities out there if this community makes you uncomfortable.

Since Lucas has already said he has no problem with--and even finds interesting--fan edits of the prequels, I hardly consider fan edits a concern, at least for Star Wars films. If other directors squawk, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

As far as people requesting materials that can be purchased at retail, such as the colorized King Kong you mention, I don't endorse that behavior and would promptly lock any thread with such a request and ban any members offering it, whether they ask for money or not.

As long as fan edits remain a purely creative exercise that brings the community together, I won't interfere with the process.

Something about my relationship I love with my wife is that we give eachother space when we need it. I have a good friend who's wife keeps him on a tight leash. By this I mean he can't even watch sports if she's around. With us it's like, if she needs space, she goes out and plays cards with the women in my family on Saturday nights (she's an only child). If I want to go out I say "I'm going out". This is not to say I spend my time carousing. But if I want to go to a movie with my friends, I just do. The same with her. It's not good to be always with eachother all the time. We spend time together at night during the week, after the kids are in bed, which usually means we're both exhausted, but we chill with a glass of wine in front of the fire and watch some dumb-a## show and make fun of it together. Even if we wind up falling asleep, at least we do it together.

Same here. I'm turning into an old man and I never was much for going out anyway, so my wife usually goes out and has a few beers with her friends on Friday or Saturday night, then we go out for dinner whatever night she doesn't go out. Sometimes we throw a movie in there. Her friends think I'm odd because I actually trust my wife to go out without me, but I'm fine with it. She gets what she needs at home, so I know she's not going anywhere.

FOR THE MARRIED OTers
Time
Got married this past September. I'll be 30 in June and my wife just turned 26 a couple weeks ago. We'd been living together for almost two years already, so the wedding was really about throwing a huge party and getting a slip of paper to make it official.

My wife and I have a great understanding of each other's needs, which I think is the secret to our success. I'm a geek, and she knows that, so there are no arguments about long hours in front of my computer or 4-hour Morrowind gaming sessions. She also gives me no flak about my time-consuming and expensive home theater hobby. Despite these activities, we spend a lot more time together than you'd think, and that's why we're doing well. In addition to a couple hours each night after work, we usually spend the entire weekend just hanging out together, which is really nice.

Things haven't changed either. All the married guys I know were telling me things would change. I'd tell them we'd already been living together for years, but they'd still try and scare me. Nothing has changed though. We get along great for the most part and each occasionally want to throw the other out the window to his or her death. Normal marriage I think.

We refer to our plan to have children as our 5 Year Plan. It's been the 5 Year Plan for the past three years though.

Joss Whedon's Greedo Revenge

Firefly kicks ass.

Serenity kicks ass.

Just a whole lot of serious ass-kicking going on there. I mean Orson Scott Card basically called Serenity the best scifi movie ever. He said that if he ever did let Hollywood do Ender's Game, he wants it to be as good as Serenity, or not done at all.

The DVDs of the series and film are selling extremely well. I think it's very likely we'll see either another season of the series picked up by SciFi or Fox, or some straight to DVD movies. After seeing what Whedon's done with it so far, it would definitely be a blind buy for me.

The new software will have emoticons. I just don't want goofy ones like these anymore. Tranny surprise is staying though.

Yes, I'm a human being like everybody else. I've just been really tired lately. Not sleeping very well. I keep having this weird recurring dream about a unicorn.

There won't be a limit imposed on images within posts and signatures. You'll have options within the control panel for handling images, however. You can elect to replace any images in posts or signatures with a link to the image; clicking the link will open the image in a new browser window. There are separate controls for post content and signature content, so you can enable this option for only one or both.

This functionality is finished and will be in the beta.

Perhaps I'll investigate functionality that scans images and loads or blocks them based on certain parameters. Maybe with JavaScript. However, I have to think that such functionality would require downloading the entire image to your browser's cache first or having the server download it and scan it there. Lots of network overhead.

Another option might be to selectively hide images. I could place a link or button on the top left corner of images that would allow users to hide them if they're ridiculously large. You'd still be downloading and viewing them, but if they're too large for your display resolution or they're breaking the page's layout (which shouldn't happen if I've built the templates properly), you could click the button and make the image go away, fixing the page.

That's actually pretty damn clever. I'm patting myself on the back right now.

The woman in the cubicle next to me is looking at me strangely.

OT.com Chat Room...
Time
This was suggested quite a while back, but it never materialized for some reason.

When I get home tonight, I'll fire up X-Chat and start the channel (probably #originaltrilogy on Undernet if it's available). Or somebody else can do it if they like. On Undernet, you need to demonstrate the channel has been in use for a while before they'll review your application. You also need at least 10 supporters to back up your application.

DarkFox, I see your point about drawing studio and director ire for splicing up their work and changing it, and it's something I've been giving a lot of thought lately.

The fan edit community in this forum sprung up as a natural extension of trying to preserve the OT when they realized Star Wars isn't the only material that would benefit from fan preservation efforts and fan edits. As far as I know, the only reason people are ripping things is to edit them. I don't know about any sales taking place, and if I were to find out someone is using this forum as a vehicle to sell a fan edit or OT laserdisc rip, they'd be banned. Immediately.

While these forums are free and I started this site as a service, it is a business now, so I do have legitimate concerns about the content of the preservation forums and what some very powerful and well-funded attorneys could do to put me out of business. Even though I don't endorse the sales of fan edits or even the possession of fan edits by people who don't own the original versions, originaltrilogy.com could be sued for enabling the trafficking of such material, whether or not there's proof of malicious intent on my part.

The preservation forums are the lifeblood of this site at the moment, and anything that curtails their growth curtails the growth of this site and my business. The irony is that the fan edit community could also someday end up causing the site's demise.
