What Laserdisc player do you use for capturing and why?
Time
Here's the thing: video is stored on laserdiscs in composite format. Therefore, most players look their best when connected to a modern display via composite video because the display typically has a better comb filter (for converting to S-video) than the LD player does. Only a select few LD players, like the X0 and LD-S9, have comb filters comparable to those in modern displays, which is why their S-video output looks so good.

My current LD player is a CLD-99. I've also owned a CLD-79 and LD-S9 (imported new from Japan, and it breaks my heart whenever I think about having sold it). With composite video output, I found them all very comparable because the display did the heavy lifting. The LD-S9 was probably the sharpest, followed by the CLD-79 and CLD-99, which is a bit soft. Differences in S-video output were more apparent. However, I found the LD-S9's S-video and composite outputs comparable on my display, most likely because the comb filters were about equal in quality.

I think the most important thing for you to worry about is finding a capture card with an exceptional comb filter and an LD player with an exceptional composite output. I've heard the CLD-97 has great composite output, but you'd have to get it modded with an AC-3 output if you planned on capturing Dolby Digital soundtracks.

Inserting deleted scene of Yoda's exile into ANH??

Because of that, having him in ANH actually makes more sense, as it would let you know that yes, after 20 years, the old jedi is still around.

I'm now absolutely convinced that anyone who watches all six movies in chronological order has no appreciation for good storytelling.

4-5-6-1-2-3 is good storytelling.

1-2-3-4-5-6 is an encyclopedia.

Not gonna happen.

You guys should move to China. I think you'd be happier with the freedom of information exchange they offer their netizens.

You can't post an NZB file for it (rule 4).
You also can't announce that Star.Wars.EP3-Revenge.Of.The.Sith.2005.NTSC.DVDR-XPDVD is being posted to alt.binaries.???? (rule 3).

What he said. Great examples.

Updated forum rules regarding fan edits and preservation efforts: a must-read for everyone.
Time

After much discussion, zion, Moth3r, and I have fleshed out an expanded and clarified set of guidelines for the growing fan edit and preservation community on this forum. The intention of these guidelines is to foster creativity among the community while minimizing inappropriate behavior that could result in legal action against the site or its members.

In order to help make the rules clear, we should first distinguish between fan edits and preservation efforts. A fan edit is a fan-made cut of an existing film. You may find fan edits for films currently available at retail, and you may find fan edits of films long out of production. As far as this community is concerned, you should own the official retail release of a fan edit’s source material if it is possible to do so. Content producers deserve to be compensated, so if you don’t own the retail release (if available), you have no business possessing a fan edit.

A preservation effort is an attempt to procure the best sources available for films not yet on DVD and convert them into viable, non-official releases to tide the public over until an official release is made. Preservation efforts should always be considered a temporary measure to be replaced with an official release when the studio catches up with demand; they are not a permanent part of your media library.

By participating in this forum (posting or lurking), you agree to the terms set forth in these guidelines.

1. No discussions about financial transactions except for the buying, selling, or trading of official retail media. All FS/FT/WTB posts belong in the selling forum.

2. No profiting from any activities related to fan edits or preservation efforts. Those found selling their fan edits or preservation projects here or elsewhere will be banned.

3. No discussions regarding traditional “warez”, such as bootlegs of current or recent theatrical releases, screeners, pre-retail/retail DVDs, and cracked computer software.

4. No direct links to media downloads of copyrighted materials (VOBs, WMV, QuickTime, torrent files, NZB files, ED2K links, etc.) with the exception of short clips to demonstrate quality or content. No direct links to pages containing such files.

5. The source of all materials used in fan edits and preservation efforts must be cited, including retail releases, laserdisc transfers, special features, menus, covers, and artwork.

6. Before obtaining any fan edits, you must be in ownership of the official retail release.

Any private messages or e-mails soliciting the sale of fan edits, preservation efforts, or bootlegs should be reported to the mods immediately. Both buyers and sellers of such material will be banned.

If you want to post something and you’re unsure if it conflicts with these guidelines, please consult the moderators (Jay, zion, or Moth3r) before posting.

Thanks for all your efforts thus far in making this community a hub of creativity and film preservation.

New forum software status - updated 1/4/2006
Time
You guys will have to bend like reeds in the wind, I'm afraid. You can't have new functionality and not the navigation to go with it. The site is growing. Just the way things are.

Besides, what exactly is "going on" in the mockup that isn't "going on" in the current software? The left nav? That's all I can see. If anything, the interface is cleaner because the icons and links have been replaced by tidy dropdown menus.

That mockup is also way out of date, btw.

Change is healthy guys. It stirs something that sleeps deep inside. The sleeper must awaken.

How is it "equality" when you have sith oppressing the galaxy, enslaving entire races, building death stars, and blowing entire planets full of people away while the good side are forced to hide to keep from being killed themselves. Having the sith in charge isn't any sort of "balance". The way the prophecy was mis-read was that no one figured that the chosen one would become Vader before ending the Sith.

"Balance" doesn't necessarily mean equal numbers of Dark and Light. Also, since getting out of balance didn't happen overnight, there's no reason to assume getting back in balance would happen very quickly either. Perhaps it's like a pendulum. The Jedi Order was running the show for so long that maybe a long period of Sith dominance is required before the pendulum can swing back to center and true balance is restored.

Unorthodox Star Wars Beliefs

Great topic. I love alternative theories about the Star Wars universe.

I have believed since Phantom Menace that "balance" meant the destruction of the Jedi. Knowing what Anakin would eventually become and what he'd do to the Jedi order made it seem pretty clear to me that his job as the chosen one--bringing balance--was not about extending the influence of the Jedi Order throughout the galaxy.

Yoda mentions the growing arrogance of the Jedi in AOTC. That's the first clue. Hearing Yoda suggest the prophecy may have been misread was the clincher.

After AOTC and ROTS, my view of the noble Jedi Order was completely turned on its head. They were arrogant and exerted way too much influence on those around them, poking their fingers in every pie and manipulating political situations as they saw fit. And I do believe this was intentional on the part of Lucas.

If Anakin was indeed conceived by the Force (ignoring the theory he was conceived by Palpatine), then it's reasonable to assume that his actions were driven by the Force and his ultimate purpose was the will of the Force. As Scruffy said, the Force doesn't obey the artificial morals set forth by humans. The Force's natural state is a state of balance, and if it's out of balance, it corrects itself through whatever events are necessary.
