Saving long posts for the forum transition (important)
Time
One of the changes being made to the new forum software is a post character limitation. I won't get into the technical reasons why I made this decision, but I'll back it up by saying that most other modern forum software packages have similar limitations in order to maximize database performance.

Posts will be limited to 8,000 characters. If you have a post that spills over that amount, you'll have to split it and make a second post to follow up your first. The effects should be minimal because 8,000 characters is quite a bit of text. However, browsing around the forum today, I noticed there are some posts that go beyond that limit. That's going to cause a problem when current posts are migrated to the new database.

All current posts moved to the new database will be truncated to 8,000 characters. Any text beyond that limit will be discarded. I strongly suggest you edit your posts if possible in order to avoid this issue.

In the event a post proves valuable, its length is justified, and the post author is unable to edit the post without ruining its intent, I propose the following solutions:

A. Ask the person whose post appears immediately after yours if you can "borrow" some space and place half your post into theirs. Mark it as "continued from so-and-so's previous post".

B. Send the post to me and make me do some work

1. Copy the text of the post you wish to save into a text file. Please use a character counter like the one in MS Word to verify the post is over 8,000 characters (with spaces) beforehand. Note that the character count must include the raw post text with custom forum tags intact if they exist; copying the post directly from the page will give inaccurate results.

2. Copy the URL contained within the "quote" link at the bottom of the post, either by clicking the link and copying the URL from your browser's address bar or right-clicking the link and selecting "copy link". Place this link at the top of the text document above the post text.

3. Save the file as messid.txt, where messid is the value following the messid variable in the "quote" URL. See the bold number for an example:

messagepost.cfm?postaction=reply&catid=7&threadid=4490&messid=180105&STARTPAGE=1&ezquote=y&parentid=180105

4. Send the file to forum at originaltrilogy dot com with the subject: "Big post: messid". Do not paste the text of the post into the e-mail itself. Please attach the text file.

Once I've moved the current posts to the new database, I'll create an additional post to follow up the first post and position it beneath the original.

Please reserve option B for truly important posts because it will involve lots of shenanigans on my part. I'd prefer you explore option A first.

Thanks guys.

what about shipping and handling?

What you're proposing is fine because you have official retail versions. Dealing with shipping costs and blank DVD-Rs is between you and the source of the fan edit. As long as no one involved is making any money and everyone involved owns official retail versions of the source material, it's kosher.

Don't know about the blinking.

Do you know anybody who might have a spare power supply you could use for testing? If not, I'd call some local PC shops and see if they'll run a quick bench test on it with a known good power supply. Shouldn't take more than a couple minutes. Tell them you'll buy a power supply from them if that turns out to be the source of your problems.

If you can't pinpoint the exact cause of the problem via error messages, the next step is usually to start removing hardware piece by piece and starting up the computer. Unplug one hard drive and try to power up. If nothing, try the other one.

Does the fan in your power supply spin? If absolutely nothing is happening at all when you try to power it up, that really points toward the power supply. Even if nothing else in your computer works, the fan in the power supply should spin if it's not dead.

Clicking can signify a dying hard drive. Even with a dying hard drive, the fans should power up and the motherboard should spit out an error message during boot. If you're seeing absolutely no response at all aside from the LED, it could be your power supply.

Is it a name brand computer or was it built for you? If you have the manual for the motherboard, it should tell you what the blinking LED means in the troubleshooting section.

Jay, how does this apply to the newly clarified forum rules? Sounds like he's supporting piracy to me. I for one continue to believe that format is irrelevant, but we should all have one properly licensed source for any title in our collection.

The OT is a special case because Lucas has already said numerous times that it no longer exists. As long as someone owns a legitimate retail release of the OT, I don't have a problem with them being in possession of a DVD-R. If the DVD-R is all they own, that's a problem.

What Laserdisc player do you use for capturing and why?

I needed the money. I sold my LD-S9 for $1700 and my CLD-79, which was my secondary LD player, for $500 I believe. At the time, I was planning to get rid of my LDs. I bought the CLD-99 last year because I got a good deal on it and I still like to watch some of my LDs on occasion.

I definitely wish I still had the LD-S9. I probably will again someday (or an X0 if I'm doing particularly well financially).

Direct evidence that Lucas didn't have the backstory all planned out when he wrote IV, V, and VI, because if he did, changes to the original to accommodate the prequels wouldn't be necessary.

Lucas should've stayed true to the original vision and written well-thought-out prequel scripts instead of "fixing" the OOT so everything fit together.

An ounce of prevention (intelligent prequel scripts) is worth a pound of cure (rewriting the OOT).

The new software does support categories that contain forums:

Category 1
- Forum 1
- Forum 2

Category 2
- Forum 3
- Forum 4

If you look at the forum you gave as an example (vBulletin), you'll see it's the exact same structure. They just link to the categories with the forums on a separate page instead of breaking them out on the index page because they have so many.

There will never be a time-based post limit turned on by default. Never. I won't diminish activity here by limiting posts and artificially driving people to IRC to have conversations. IRC doesn't have a threaded structure and it's not persistent. If you're not in the room, you miss the discussion entirely. Completely different dynamic from an online forum.

Post limiting for problematic members is a good idea and is something I might experiment with.

New forum software status - updated 1/4/2006

Will it just block PMs from a user or does it not display ANY posts from whomever you've 'ignored'? If the latter is the case won't that make the threads seem kinda wonky like people are responding to themselves? Won't ignored posts in the latter case show up when people quote them?

Ignored user posts don't disappear completely. A placeholder appears where the ignored user's post should be, but instead of post text, you'll see a link that says "This user is on your ignore list. Click here to view the content of this post." So it's not as if the ignored user becomes a phantom. If someone quotes a user you've ignored, you'll be able to see that text. I considered blocking that also, but it seemed extreme.

You'll have several options for controlling ignored users. Once you place a user on your ignore list, you'll be able to control exactly what they can and can't do. You can block them from seeing your profile, sending you e-mail via the contact form, and sending you private messages. You control the level to which you take the ignore function.
