A new chip that could end the HD-DVD / Blu-ray battle before it even begins?!?!

Unless you own an HDTV.

And even though HDTV sales have been going quite well thanks to the popularity of DVD, it's much easier to sell HDTVs when you can actually offer HD content to go along with them.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying DVD and sticking with it, but you greatly underestimate the size and potential of the HD-on-disc market.

So what exactly is the difference between HD-DVD/Blu-Ray and regular DVD? So far as I can tell, it just sounds like a DVD that can hold more stuff....

It's not just more data, it's more resolution and much higher quality audio. DVD is limited to 480 lines of resolution, either interlaced or progressive. BluRay and HD-DVD allow for resolutions up to 1080p. The improvement on screen sizes under 42" isn't as apparent, but blow it up to 60" or larger, and good HD material is stunning.

If you're thinking you'll never own a TV that big, consider the fact you can buy a 720p LCD projector right now for $1500. Think about what it will cost in a year or two. Or five.

DVD has been around for about a decade, and while it will continue for many years, HDTVs are widely available at reasonable prices and now is the perfect time to start the rollout of HD-on-disc.

Different studios own the various Terminator films.

Couldn't tell you why Kill Bill Vol. 1 and not Vol. 2. From what I can see it's not an exhaustive list, so it might just be out of date. There are some older catalog titles Warner announced for HD-DVD that aren't on that BluRay list even though they've said they'll be releasing the same titles for both (North By Northwest is one I can think of off the top of my head).

I'd expect the case artwork to remain mostly the same between DVD and BluRay/HD-DVD. No reason to change it really.

Ignore the "Beyond High Definition" verbiage. Marketing junk I'm guessing.

I don't think the downfall of Beta (which is what I assume you're alluding to) really applies in this case. Beta's superiority--superior image quality--was overshadowed by its shorter recording time, which was far more important to the average user than a few extra lines of resolution. In the case of BluRay and HD-DVD, the technical differences will be irrelevant or unimportant to the majority of mass-market buyers. Only enthusiasts will understand the technical differences and the average buyer will think they both look fantastic.

This is a battle that will be won with software, and studio support is overwhelmingly in BluRay's corner. Sony is doing a bad job, but most other studios have announced A-list titles. Even Warner has said they'll release the exact same titles for BluRay as they have planned for HD-DVD. Universal is the only major holdout left and it's far more likely they'll cave and release BluRay titles than Disney, Miramax, Fox, Lion's Gate, etc. caving and supporting HD-DVD.

People who buy HD-DVD at launch because they don't know any better will be extremely disappointed when they can't get half the titles they want, can't output hi-res audio across all seven channels, and can't output true 1080p due to limitations in Toshiba's HD-DVD players.

This is exactly what I thought when I saw Sony's BluRay lineup. They want to take over the world, so they offer that garbage?

I want BluRay to win because of its technical superiority, but Sony deserves to have their ass handed to them for launching with such shit.

New forum software status - updated 1/4/2006
Time
Originally posted by: ricarleiteSo, any news or even any dates to when the testings might begin for the new software? I want to help with that.

I tried to finish it up this weekend, but after compiling a to-do list on Saturday I realized that wasn't feasible. I'm in the midst of rewriting all database queries as stored procedures to improve performance. After that I need to perform security checks to make sure there aren't any holes anywhere, which includes some form validation I haven't completed yet. I've tried to be careful during development so I'm not anticipating any serious problems.

The list is substantial, but my problem until now has been my tendency to float along and work on whatever I feel like dealing with when I'm in the mood to do it. With the core functionality complete, I decided to nail down everything I need to do, put a list together, and tackle each item one at a time.

Could be done, though RSS would probably be a better way of tracking such things.

Many great suggestions. All will be noted. I'll compile them all into a list before I begin development.

It certainly could.

Also, if there's more than one person working on the edit, would all of them have access to enter info in the blog, or would they all have seperate blogs? Maybe have a main "official" blog, with the ability to link to the personal blogs of each individual department. Then, people would be able to click and find out the progress of the writing, the music, the editing, the effects, etc individually. I know a feature like that would be extremely helpful over at our Ranch Edit thread.

I could center the application around the fan edit and associate multiple users with multiple edits. Shouldn't be a problem. Each could have a space in the fan edit profile with a description of their contribution and their own blog.

This sounds great!

But is it just for fan-edits, or will it be possible also for documentaries and other stuff?

No reason it couldn't work for different types of fan productions.

I second the idea to include space so that editors can upload trailers of their work. Picture galleries will also be wonderful.

A picture gallery is a given. How large would the typical trailer be? 5 megs? 10?

The new forum software is 99% done. There were times I felt like eating a bullet during its development, but I'm proud of what I'm about to put out there for testing. I hope you'll enjoy the improvements.

It's now time to address the issue of an ever-growing community of fan editors, their many edits, and the difficulty in nailing down the specifics of each edit. I posted months ago about a fan edit gallery of sorts, a place to post screen caps and general descriptions about your fan edits.

I've decided instead to develop a fully-functional blog interface that will allow people to keep track of fan edit efforts in as much detail as they'd like. Descriptions, screen caps, a blog (journal with comments), user ratings/reviews, whatever you want. I'd like to develop an interface that will serve as a definitive resource for fan edits of all kinds--the kind of database that will absolutely kill all future "Which one should I get?" topics.

What specific things would you like to post about your fan edits or see posted about others' fan edits? What kind of stats/info/etc. would be of interest to you? I'm asking for specific examples because I want to build a structured interface with consistent data instead of a big text entry field where people can throw in anything. Think of the interface as a blog to chart your progress and a profile for you and your fan edit that details everything people would want to know about:

- Source material ("Faces" laserdiscs, Definitive Collection, 2004 DVDs, etc.)
- Soundtrack format (DD, PCM, etc.)
- Software used during production
- Known glitches
- Screen caps
- Tips from the creator (things you've learned, things you would/wouldn't do again)
- Fan reviews/ratings
- Whatever the hell else you can think of...

Built into this "blog" will be the capability to select multiple fan edits of the same film and directly compare their stats, hence the need for a comprehensive and uniform structure to the data.

How serious am I about making this a valuable resource? I just registered fanedit.net, fanedits.com, and fanedits.net (fanedit.com is already taken, but apparently only by a squatter). I really want to build something cool.

I wonder if it's an increased dynamic range that makes the LD sound so good?

LD soundtracks are pretty much direct conversions of the theatrical mix. DVD mixes are often re-equalized so as not to stress feeble home theater setups.

Check out Mission: Impossible on laserdisc for a great example of an extremely aggressive DD mix.

Account Verification

Problem with that is most people signing up probably expect immediate access and there would definitely be a delay before their account got approved.

Trolls get bored eventually. Not worth changing our policies to accommodate them. The ignore feature in the new software will allow any user to block anybody else with a single click.
