WB and BitTorrent to offer downloads legally
Time
I'm really glad to see Hollywood embracing the web instead of stifling it like the music industry tried to do.

With the site's focus shifting toward fan edits, I have dreams--perhaps unrealistic--that we'll someday strike a similar deal that allows the creation of fan edits without the legal shadow hovering over us like it does now. It would be nice to have an open and healthy fan edit community in a consequence-free environment.

I can handle it being closed, but even after making an irrefutable argument in its defense, I was brushed off. I find that insulting and hypocritical, since others have provided titles which already do exist and are domestically available, and yet are allowed to get away with it.

For the last time, you were not brushed off. I just started a new job working much longer hours, I moved into a new house, and I've been out of town almost every weekend for the past 6 weeks. Your question simply did not take priority in my life, and Moth3r and Zion can't make that sort of decision without my input.

You need to get over the whole Ong Bak thing. Seriously.

Your thread was closed pending administrator discussion regarding its content. The conclusion was that "custom DVDs" such as your Ong Bak release may be discussed, but may not be referred to as a "fan edit" because there wasn't any real editing going on.

If there are threads discussing the availability of materials available at retail, please direct me to them so they can be locked immediately. Just like police in the real world, we can't moderate 100% of the content here 100% of the time. I don't read every thread, and I'm sure Moth3r and Zion don't have the time to either.

Regarding ocpmovie, I support Zion's decision. ocpmovie was acting like an ass, and when he made changes to the edits Zion made to his post, he crossed the line. He's welcome to come back if he wishes to continue posting here, but trolls will always be treated like trolls no matter how much street cred they may have.

Info: The Future of OT Preservation projects (the 2006 DVDs has been announced)
Time
This site stopped being solely a Star Wars site long ago. Look at the growth of the non-Star Wars preservation forum.

I'm mulling things over, but I think the site has plenty of life left in it to evolve into something special.

I'm just ashamed Lucas actually announced the OT on DVD before I managed to finish the new software

A tool is me.

DVDs for sale (updated)
Time
They're all DVDs. The only LDs I still have are the OT THX discs (two sets) and a few others I plan to keep.

I have a small batch of DVDs that aren't for sale, mostly because I think the HD-DVD/BluRay versions are pretty far off--if they ever arrive, that is. Everything I've listed above is either something I don't think I'll need to watch again any time soon, or something I've watched so many times that I can let it go until it gets here in HD.

The computer dilemma
Time
Congrats on the windfall.

Just get the Mini. You'll be glad you spent an extra $179 (not much in the grand scheme of things) to get what you really want. I'm enjoying my Power Mac a great deal and don't regret the purchase in any way.

Besides, with Intel Macs now able to reliably boot and run XP thanks to Boot Camp, you can switch if you're ever in the mood to do some fragging or play Solitaire. I still have a Windows box I keep around for online gaming, but once the Rev. B Intel Power Macs are out next year, I'll be kissing that PC goodbye.

I say take advantage of the opportunity you've been given to do what you've always wanted to do. Life is too short.

HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Digital Rights Management

That was last Tuesday. I've seen them set up at multiple Best Buy stores and at the local Tweeter.

At Best Buy, they're using a Westinghouse 1080p 42" LCD as the demo display. The 1080i video clips they were showing looked so-so because the Westinghouse has substandard video deinterlacing, but the film clips looked phenomenal. King Kong in 1080p was breathtaking. The color depth and detail made it look as good as any film presentation I've ever seen.

The only titles currently available are Last Samurai, Phantom of the Opera, Million Dollar Baby, and Serenity. I think Doom and Apollo 13 come out tomorrow.

Over the next two or three months you should see about 80 or so HD-DVD/BluRay titles on the shelves.

FUEL TO THE MAC vs. PC FIRE
Time
I bought a Power Mac running Tiger in September. Great machine with a great OS.

I've used Win2k and WinXP for years on PCs I built myself. Also great machines with a great OS.

I prefer the OS X interface. It looks nice and it's easy to use. The default XP interface is Fisher Price and looks like ass. I turn it off because I prefer the utilitarian look to bad design.

Windows is snappier and quicker to respond to input. Also seems to run better with less RAM. OS X is a memory and resource hog, and even on a Power Mac it responds slower than I'd like.

Both OS X and XP are patched with similar frequency. Those who say OS X is inherently more stable or less prone to bugs are drinking the Kool-Aid. I've had OS X lock up several times since September. It's not bulletproof.

I see little to no difference when running resource-intensive apps like Photoshop and Dreamweaver.

As a reference, I'm comparing my dual 2.5Ghz Power Mac with Geforce 6800 Ultra and 3.5 gigs of RAM running Tiger with a P4 2.6 with Radeon 9600XT and 1.5 gigs of RAM running XP and Win2k.

Personally, I prefer OS X for day-to-day use and I'll probably stick with Mac when I buy my next machine because the Intel Power Macs will be out by then. I'll dual boot OS X and XP, maybe even Vista. Best of both worlds.

Use what you like. The real-world differences come down to taste/preference and nothing more, unless you're a gamer, in which case I'd definitely recommend XP.

Star Trek DS9
Time
I bought the first three seasons of TNG recently and am working my way through those. I thought about buying DS9, but I decided to wait until I got to the point in the TNG timeline that DS9 came about. I thought watching them concurrently would be a good way to go about it, otherwise plotlines/spoilers would likely be a problem (I only caught the first 4 seasons of DS9 back in the day, and in watching just the first season of TNG, I've found I missed a fair amount of episodes from that series as well).

I have fond memories of DS9 and always considered it a strong series. I'm looking forward to checking it out.

72,000+ signatures?
Time
When I moved the signatures to my local machine to make more space in the database, I had to modify the signature count because it relied upon a database record count to update that number. Easiest way at the time was to round it off since new signatures were only trickling in.

Honestly, I don't know what the current total is. It'll go back to the old method once I move the site to the new server.

Stunt man sues Tom Cruise over MI3 injury
Time
There's always an element of risk, but I think it comes down to whether there was negligence on the part of the people who set things up.

Working on an oil rig out in the middle of the ocean is fairly dangerous, but if you're injured because the company that built the rig cut some corners or the engineer who designed it made a mistake, their negligence puts the level of risk above what would be considered normal for the job, and for that they could probably be sued.
