I think gamers are overestimating the potential effect of the PS3 on BluRay's success in much the same way they often overstate the PS2's effect on DVD's success. DVD would be exactly where it is today even if the PS2 hadn't supported DVD playback.

If BluRay is to survive, it'll be on its own merits as a home video platform.

Why did everyone love Star Wars when Lucas repeatedly claimed they would NOT be available on DVD, and now AFTER an announcement that it WILL see the light of day again, everyone's through with SW. It's kinda weird. This is a big step in the right direction.

This is exactly what is baffling me.

Before the announcement, there was a lot of hope we could change his mind. After the announcement, we were elated because we thought we were finally getting what we wanted. With the confirmation that the OOT will be of less than acceptable quality, our spirits have fallen again.

End result: we're more pissed off now than we were before. I don't find it baffling at all.

Bolded for emphasis. Adoption rates will pick up as prices continue to drop. And within five years, every TV sold at retail will be HD compatible.

[EDIT] I will say this. On my last trip to Fry's, I saw HD-DVD releases, and they looked rather interesting. However, when I went to the DVD player section, there were no HD-DVD players. At best, I saw players that would upconvert to 720P. Has anyone done any research on those? (not that I intend to spend money on a stopgap technology, but I was just curious.)

Initial releases will most likely feature standard DD/DTS soundtracks to maintain compatibility with older audio equipment. Every release needs to have DD for this very reason. I think the most popular codecs used on HD-DVD and BluRay after production ramps up will be the new lossless codecs from Dolby (Dolby TrueHD) and DTS (DTS-HD).

The only HD-DVD players out right now are Toshiba's. At Best Buy, they set up a special endcap with a Westinghouse 1080p LCD to demo the material. It's really nice. BluRay is launching next month, and I'm curious to see how the marketing compares to HD-DVD's, which is dreadful. Samsung's player is coming out next month with LG, Pioneer, Panasonic, and Sony following with BluRay players in August/September.

What he said. Your DVD player is set to 4:3.

Also, keep in mind that scope films (2.35:1) like LOTR will still have slim black bars on the top and bottom on 16:9 displays due to their wider aspect ratio.

I know a lot of you are frustrated. I am too, though I've grown less and less attached to Star Wars as Lucas continues to disregard his fans more and more.

I have no problem with valid criticisms of George Lucas. You can even call the guy an asshole on occasion if it makes you feel better about the whole thing. However, praying for his death is going a bit too far.

Occasional venting is totally fine, but let's try to keep our comments constructive from now on.

Thanks.

Too bad you didn't understand it.

There were two morons over at HTF in the Star Wars thread who also argued that anamorphic enhancement on a DVD was somehow changing the original film--both of them members for over 5 years. They got railed by the other members.

You're likely to receive the same treatment here. We don't take kindly to dumbasses.

$36 pre-order (AR) for all 3 titles...anyone found it cheaper??
Time
With some of the posts I'm seeing around here, I'm almost convinced this release really is exactly what the majority of Star Wars fans truly deserve.

Kind of sad how people are ready to accept whatever Lucas throws at them in the hopes that he'll bless us with a copy of the holy trilogy that finally meets industry standards.

Count me out.

Kubrick: Vinyl Trilogy (Released)
Time
Kubrick's insistence on using open matte 4:3 for home video presentations came about after he saw what happened to 2001 when it was panned and scanned. If he were alive today and witnessed the very wide acceptance of widescreen DVDs and the fairly quick adoption rate of HDTVs, I think he would've given the widescreen blessing to future home video releases of his older films.

Full Metal Jacket, which was 1.85:1 in theaters but opened up to 1.37:1 for DVD release, has been released by Warner Brothers in 1.85:1 on HD-DVD.

It's precisely this attitude that has encouraged Lucas to take advantage of fan loyalty by issuing a release that isn't worthy of even the smallest independent studios.

Nobody would buy this release if it were any other movie. It would be considered unacceptable.

Call me crazy, but I kinda thought the whole point of the petition was to demonstrate the market for the theatrical cuts.

There's no way I'm giving Lucas more money as a demonstration of my undying loyalty to Star Wars. Seriously, if this news turns out to be true, fuck him.

Excuse me while I go watch Return of the King.

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)

When I receive a polite request from ocpmovie asking to return, he'll be allowed back with full posting privileges. I don't even expect an apology because I don't believe it would be sincere.

As long as I receive e-mail containing demands like...

"Leave me the fuck alone, restore my posting privileges, and fuck off."

...he'll remain banned.

It's a shame all this nonsense had to interrupt what is a very impressive project, but there's no way I'm going to spend the time and money it takes to keep this site running and then put up with his insane rants. Reading his comments at SA mentioning his situation in the same sentence as Miramax ruining good films and (get this) Nazis killing Jews, how can I take him seriously?

And no, I won't allow him to post updates via other members. That defeats the purpose of banning him, which is to cut off communication and remind him that he owes as much to this forum as this forum does to him. Respect goes both ways.

If he chooses to dig in his heels and finish up the project elsewhere, more power to him.
