Is this a hate crime?

The first news story I read on this (can’t remember the site) clearly stated in the opening paragraph that the perpetrators were black and the victim was white. I went back to the same site later that day and they’d edited it to remove the races of those involved.

I lean toward the liberal end of the spectrum and I still think this is clearly an anti-white guy crime, especially given the anti-Trump rants of the perpetrators. I don’t know what the legal requirements are for a hate crime, though — do people need to be a member of a minority or protected group in order to be victims of a hate crime, or is only the intent of expressing hate toward a particular group required? I also suspect that if this were 4 white people hammering on a black guy and screaming anti-Obama nonsense, it would be classified as a hate crime and the races of those involved would be displayed prominently in all news stories (except Fox News, maybe).

While your earlier attempts at humor were misconstrued, I hope that doesn’t dissuade you from attempting again in the future — especially in a thread about death, which can sometimes only be dealt with via humor.

The Off Topic forum is for topics that aren’t related to Star Wars, which is what makes it “off topic”. Within a given topic in Off Topic, why would you expect it’s okay to derail a thread with unrelated posts?

We specifically added the “OP’s discretion” clause so that if the OP has no problem with jokes/pics/assorted nonsense in their topic, then people are free to post in that vein. There’s nothing stopping you from starting a topic in Off Topic that’s as open as you want, but members no longer have free reign to pollute topics where their antics aren’t wanted.

Interesting and productive discourse lies in the reasonable space between protecting delicate flowers from the slightest offense and promoting a crude free-for-all. We aim to provide an open and lively discussion forum while keeping things civil, hence the following rules.

Can some of you just not help yourselves? Is it a compulsion? Is it actually more difficult to say nothing than to go after somebody? I’m annoyed more by some of you than you seem to be by the OP.

Regardless of how I feel about the OP and his threads, I agree with the sentiment. STOP ATTACKING EACH OTHER FFS.

New rules for Off Topic are coming. Control yourselves in the meantime.

We’ve been getting hammered by web crawlers again this week (some of them good and normal, some of them looking for vulnerabilities), which ties up the available database connections. I made changes in the last release in an attempt to mitigate this problem, but I guess it didn’t do the job and I need to take another look.

Don’t attack other members, insult them, or accuse them of things you can’t prove. If someone attacks you, please report it to a moderator (a PM including SilverWook, Anchorhead, Moth3r, and me will do). Do not respond in kind. Don’t act as a moderator if you see something you don’t like; report it if necessary.

The mods are discussing the overall forum situation and what to do about it. There will likely be some changes soon. Please be civil in the meantime.

No one had permission to circumvent anything. No mods are posing as socks. Registration reopened weeks ago. Anybody is free to wander in now; I used to think that was the cause of the decline in the overall quality of posts here, but some of the senior members are causing me to rethink that conclusion.

Traditionally, this is true, but if your entire stack is open source like ours, there are no real secrets. The entire codebase is publicly available on GitHub. If you want to learn our technology stack in the hopes of identifying an attack vector, a quick perusal of package.json in the root of the project provides a nice outline based on the npm packages installed with the app — right down to the version number.

The only thing in the error that’s not public is the path to the app on the web server, but anybody who gains access to the file system has defeated several layers of security and already has the keys to the kingdom.

From a UX perspective, the errors are ugly. That just comes down to time and priorities.

We occasionally get hammered by crawlers that consume all available database connections. I’ve implemented improved connection pooling in the next update, which should hopefully fix this problem.
