Gotta love whataboutism.

“Whataboutism” is a logical fallacy when the purpose of the argument is to deflect from the original topic of debate and potentially shift the blame to the other side. I’m saying both sides are full of it.

That’s the beauty of dropping party affiliation; you no longer feel the need to defend “your side” and all bullshit is laid bare.

Of course they have better resolution, but actors shouldn’t look like wax works. Predator is a prime example of this. The early Blu-Ray release, even though it’s an MPEG 2 encode, is way better.

Yes. The second release was a DNR nightmare.

Some of my favorite Blu-ray releases are just clean 2K scans with minimal cleanup. Verhoeven’s RoboCop and Total Recall remasters look amazing. Paramount could do the same with the Trek films and most fans would be thrilled.

Even if you’re going to say that they were lazy output, they still look far better than VHS, laserdisc, and DVD.

That shouldn’t be the yardstick. I’ve seen the “it’s better than the [insert previous release]” justification for decades, and it doesn’t really cut it. The truth is that you actually have to try to make a Blu-ray bad; excessive DNR and weird sound mixes don’t happen on their own.

The screen grabs in the blu-ray.com review look a lot closer to the original DVD release, which I remember as being somewhat desaturated, with a green cast that made scenes in the Matrix look kind of brown overall.

Not that we should be using DVD as a reference, but the original Blu-ray release was way over the top green.

Many BD releases have gotten good video/audio reviews, like Jurassic Park, 007 films, Back to the Future etc. but on this forum people have had a different opinion as they have older releases and possibly even original audio tracks or film reels to make their point.

I’m just going to be completely honest with you, and some people here may get pissed off at me, but most people on here just generally aren’t the experts that they think they are, and that’s putting it extremely politely. Just because someone on this forum thinks that old laserdiscs or DVDs look better than a perfectly fine blu ray doesn’t mean that you should listen to them. The 007 films look great on blu ray, except for Goldeneye which wasn’t restored. But even Goldeneye still looks better than it did on DVD and VHS. I’m going to go out on a limb and wager that over 99% of blu ray releases are better than any previous home video presentation of the film in question. I think the OUT and the “accurate” (however the hell that’s even judged) Star Wars color obsession has gotten many people on this site to think that all modern home video is questionable and all old home video is inherently accurate when that’s not true at all.

I agree with you in general (especially about people citing old NTSC releases as color references, which is insane), but you picked a bad example. The 007 films aren’t all terrible, but even if we set the color timing aside (which I’m certainly no expert on), the DNR trashed a lot of those discs. I have the box set and on a 50" 1080p display, it’s obvious they made a poor effort. The Bond and Star Trek films (OS and TNG) are shining examples of lazy studio output.

So I tell anyone who doesn’t want to participate to leave the thread, and that’s the cue for some of you to debate and push it further?

Frink, you have no business jumping into others’ threads and judging whether they’re worthy of existing or not. Whenever you have the itch to moderate, do it in your own forum.

General Guidelines #2 and #3:

  1. Don’t moderate unless you’re a moderator. If you see problematic behavior, report it. Report new members you suspect to be trolls/socks, but don’t accuse them publicly without proof.
  2. The OP is considered the thread owner and sets the topic and tone for a thread. The mods will defer to the OP’s preference in determining whether posts veer too far off topic.

The only reason I’m leaving all the garbage posts intact in this thread is to demonstrate how not to conduct yourself here.

Any further posts on the subject will be deleted and temp bans will be issued.

Apologies to the OP for the disruption.

What’s the point of color correction if millions of fans don’t know how to download your releases?
So hard to upload on an outdoor torrent tracker and cloud storage?

Can someone ban this guy?

I think there’s a new approach here of not being harsh/terrible to new members, even when they are rude and misinformed in their first few posts. Some might still end up banned, but giving them a chance has proven effective from what I’ve seen.

Not sure if that’s still going on or not. But there were a few people here with much more patience than me that were undertaking the responsibility of gently and politely telling people why we do things the way we do, and pointing them in the right direction.

Here’s my best effort: there is a reason for the methods we use. These projects often take members here hundreds of hours, so they can be a bit touchy when a new person barges in with demands. These things are out there in public and people here can be extremely helpful when asked politely. Once you acquire the files, you are (in most cases) more than welcome to start up a public torrent or file locker upload (you are NOT permitted to post links to those things openly in this forum).

These things are not the responsibilities of the content creators, so please don’t act in an ungrateful way toward said creators. They don’t even need to share these things with the community at all, let alone the outside world.

I respect you position and your thoughtful response Towne, but it keeps happening.

I have no issues with noobs asking questions but there should be penalties for rudeness to keep the forum conversations respectful. Zero tolerance I say.

It’s not necessarily my position, but the forum’s position is definitely not zero tolerance at the moment. That said, I have seen new members turn things around after a thoughtful/informative reply. Otherwise, they just become more irrational and inflammatory in response to kindness, and then they’re banned for sure. Seems like a logical way of dealing with things.

Great posts.

If a new member comes in the front door acting entitled, is asked to adjust their expectations and posting style, and continues acting the same way, they’ll almost certainly be banned if they don’t leave on their own.

Until they actually meet, NK has done nothing different than they’ve done a bunch of times before. The only difference so far is that the President said yes.

You mean aside from dismantling a nuclear test site, which satellite imagery shows they’re doing?

Yeah, this was a site that had already collapsed and killed over two hundred NK citizens.
Kim is just trying to make a concession that had already been conceded.

Theater. Admitting they’re dismantling it instead of claiming to be building it back up for the next test is what matters.

I’m not going to claim this is fact, but I swear that on one of the political podcasts I listen to they reported that the site was basically collapsing in on itself anyway so they just did it to get the brownie points.

Maybe 25 years of doing basically nothing got us…basically nothing. Other than a North Korean nuclear weapons program, of course.

Did I say Trump shouldn’t talk with them? I fully support it. One of the very few (possibly only) things I think he’s done right.

The negotiations will continue. I wouldn’t be surprised if these “cancellations” were prearranged.

You’re veering off into conspiracy talk there.

Although Trump is our first reality show / nothing is real / only ratings matter President, so what the hell, you’re probably right.

There are the public negotiations, and then there are the private negotiations over how the negotiations will be presented to the public and the rest of the world.

I take it you’re involved it the private negotiations then.

Even basic business negotiations involve setting the stage and making sure everyone comes out looking good. I’ve never been involved in a political negotiation, but I’m assuming the basic concepts are the same.

Have you been involved in basic business negotiation with the two craziest people on the planet?

Although that may be unfair to the North Korean guy I suppose. Not really sure.

We’ll see how it all plays out.

Lol…?

Nothing with a high DPI (“Retina” in Apple parlance) display showed it in my testing, which includes most mobile devices made within the last 10 years and most Apple products.

While high DPI displays are becoming more common for Windows-based PCs and laptops, many still ship with low DPI displays. I have one hooked up to my gaming PC, so I was able to verify the existence of the Single Blue Pixel there.

You respond to what you infer rather than what you read. I can’t productively debate that mindset.

I’m going to take my own advice that I’ve often handed out to others here and not respond further.

That’s unfortunate. My post was totally reasonable though, so I’m disappointed that you can’t address what I said, especially since only one small part of it was commenting on your defense of the right. I really wanted to hear your comments on the deaths of the supposedly Hamas children that made up 15% of the death toll in the Israel killings, but I guess that isn’t worth responding to either because I made a rational inference about your political leanings. As for that inference, when the only thing you’ve done in all of my interactions with you in this thread is defend the right and attack the left while using conservative talkings about the media and socialism, I can assume that you are more opposed to the left than the right. There’s nothing irrational about that inference. It’s totally reasonable and I actually would argue that I’d be incredibly imperceptive to not see or comment on that obvious implication. You also made several inferences about me that were far less linear when you were defending Jordan Peterson and I didn’t walk away from the conversation.

I also would’ve liked to hear you address my point on why the Democrats will not continue to lose in future elections, but I guess I won’t get an answer to that either.

Nope, you won’t.

Incidentally I went looking for my first post and there’s a weird thing happening where a bunch of my post history pages at the end are blank. Example:

There’s a bug in the pagination that determines page count based on your total number of posts (including those in private topics), even though posts in private topics aren’t displayed within your profile.
