There isn’t much wrong with the visuals of THE FORCE AWAKENS… except for the horrid color grade. While the colors pop and the lightsabres dazzle on the screen, Han Solo (and everyone else) appear to have some severe blood pressure issues, as seen here. Even the crawl is affected from this grade! For my “regrade”, I am going to fix that issue.

I am not looking to drastically regrade the entirety of the film, rather, I want to keep the style, but lessen its effects. For my first pass at altering the color grade, I’ve desaturated the film and adjusted the hue shift – pushing the skin tones from pink to more natural colors.
REGRADE vs BLU-RAY comparisons (first pass):

I am aware that there is also a blanket tint across the image, but I do not plan to address that just yet.
Well those shots look great. Has there been any shot you’ve tried so far, where things go really wrong?
Not really…they’re all clear improvements over the bluray, even if some might require a little tweaking. These were created with just eight of Neverar’s regrade examples. The great thing is, that depending on your tastes you can create a HarmyBot, kk650-Bot, DreamasterBot, SwazzyBot, or perhaps even a Towne32Bot 😉. Alternatively, you could take some Technicolor print scans, or another official color grading, and train the algorithm to reproduce those colors.
I eagerly await the day we can create a GOUTbot.
Thank you for your efforts. I am incredibly excited for this!
How about that Force Awakens movie, eh?
…I’ve waited for a long time and have been left gravely disappointing. Excuse me…
Dude, don’t be so hard on yourself.
I think you’re A-Ok!
Hah, good catch!
Ok here’s how it goes. From the concensus I’ve seen it appears that a good majority of the Star Wars fans who own the current BD sets are fine with them as is. So a simple 4K restoration of the same SE is likely not gonna be enough of a good selling point to sell the same version again. So what do they do?? Restore the original cuts to be included WITH the 4K restored SE.
Seriously guys. Quit being morons. Theoretically speaking what sounds like it’ll profit more even if by a fraction?? A 4K release with only the SE or a 4K release with both cuts?? One cut caters to only a specific market while more than one cut caters to multiple markets.
Case and point. How many people do you actually suspect petitioned to have all those cuts of Blade Runner released together?? Compared to Star Wars probably little to nothing. Did it stop Ridley Scott from remastering those cuts and releasing them together?? Nope. Another example is how a few years ago Kino released a cut of the silent film Metropolis with restored footage not seen since the original release. Compared to Star Wars who do you think really gave a crap about that?? Nonetheless did it prevent them from restoring and releasing it?? Don’t think so.
I’m honestly puzzled why some of you even ask why Disney would spend the money to restore the originals while at the same time neglecting to realize that a restored OUT is likely gonna be packaged as an extra to the SE anyways. However as long as the originals are presented in proper quality I’m sure the majority of us would be fine with it.
Until Lucasfilm/Disney gives a direct response on the matter the speculation resumes as far as where I stand. And no the Kathleen Kennedy interview does not count.
Are YOU serious? Most Star Wars fans have bought pretty every release of Star Wars since the first home video version was released in the early 1980s. All they needed to do, was claim it’s been remastered, or add a few extras. So, given that reality, what makes you believe this trend will suddenly stop with a 4K release? If they release a 4K version with a few new extras, the damn thing will sell like crazy, like all Star Wars releases have, with or without the OOT.
Anyone here who just wants to run the same old blah blah ‘they’re not gonna spend the money’ as if to shut down all hopes of it ever happening when they have no more knowledge of the subject than those continuing to speculate must really not want the OUT in the end.
Give me a break, I want it just as much as anyone else, but I’m not going to get my hopes up anymore. I’ve waited for a long time and have been left gravely disappointed. Excuse me for being skeptical.

Because it’s a realistic point of view. There’s really no sense in restoring the OUT if they already have a 4k scan of the SEs ready to go. The public will go crazy for a 4k release, even if it is just the SEs.
Oh my god.
And the argument that buying a ticket to The Last Jedi will stop the OOT from ever coming out is insanely stupid.
Don’t you mean The LOST Jedi?
As much as I disagree with your comments on the new films, I highly agree with your stance on the OOT. Thank you for putting it so bluntly – many here need to come to the realization.
This would be a great step in correcting the horrendous color timing of both the HDTV and the Blu-ray versions of the film. Being that it’s the best of the prequels, it’s a shame it has never been presented with its proper color timing.
Ugh.
You can’t fix what’s wrong with The Force Awakens because there’s nothing wrong with it.
One more time because I’m not doing this again

Get out of here with that clickbait BS.
Based off the discussions I’ve read in this thread, could it be said that MVerta’s “grading” for Legacy is too contrast-y? I see so many different interpretations, it’s hard to know who’s right…
Colors look very nice (almost perfect to be honest), but the levels look flat, though that may not have been your objective for this example.
I was always convinced that the scans seen from other projects were too bright and contrasty. I think this seems closer in line with how the film’s levels should appear. Great stuff!
I take it your settings are just for Star Wars, and not Empire or Jedi?
These settings also work for ESB and ROTJ. Will post screenshots of them once I’ve done some more tweaking.
Still working on these, believe it or not. This time I used a LUT as a basis for the correction, and then tweaked levels and saturation. I did a split screen comparison, so you can see how radically different it looks.

I went in and synced it up, only made three cuts to the entire Blu-ray.
Thank you all for your notes on this – hopefully I can downgrade the BD entirely to the '97 SEs – if so, you are more than welcome to use them Yotsuya, unless you’d prefer using the TV captures.
I would be very interested, if you ever have the time and resources to upload it to the Spleen.
My god, I never realized just how awful the 2011 mix sounded. Has anyone ever attempted to sync the '97 DTS files for ANH to the Blu-rays? I’d imagine it would only be missing a few frames here and there, but would be doable.
This is honestly a very effective way to do it, in my opinion. We don’t want them to have to read paragraph upon paragraph.
(namely TPM and ESB).
Very aware of the problems with TPM, but haven’t heard ESB used as an example of where the blu-rays hit their worst. Do you mind elaborating? I’m quite curious. The blue shift is intense and all but I don’t know how it’s any worse than the rest of the OT.
sidenote: I can’t figure out this text editor for shit anymore and it makes me feel hella old.
The DNR on ESB is the worst of any of the OT. During the escape from Cloud City, there’s a wide shot of the crew running back to the Falcon. Because of the aggressive DNR, parts of Leia’s legs are erased for a few frames. This occurs throughout the film and lots of important detail is lost.
Yeah, it doesn’t seem squished upon playback, it’s merely that the black bars aren’t as low as they should be. Simply crop to 1920x817 and you’re golden.
I would be more than happy to beta-test a fixed version, if you ever decide to go that route.
