4K restoration on Star Wars

It’s been pointed out on numerous occasions that it appears that the general public does not care one way or another about the changes. This may be true but I honestly don’t understand how this affects the chances of a future OUT release.

If they don’t care about the changes, then what’s the point of even reverting them? That costs money.

Something like Manos got nearly $50k put up by fans. Can you imagine what an OOT kickstarter would do?

Synapse and Disney are two different companies with two different objectives. It’s comparing apples to oranges.

Disney puts out obscure titles via their movie club, and other studios put out similar titles via Made On Demand.

The Trilogy would require a lot, lot more work than a catalog Disney title.

I find the whole Academy Award thing completely useless. Who cares about something irrelevant as Academy Awards. The only important thing is the current and future audience, for which these films should be preserved.

If you had won one and then had the reason you won it for erased you might feel differently.

Disney / Fox won’t care though. A lot of what I have read here is based off of emotion and nostalgia, not reason and fact. The distributor does not care about how you feel AT ALL. How do I know this? I am a home video distributor, albeit a small cult one. When I restore a film, I do it out of personal love, not because fan encouragement, though it can be a factor.

On a corporate level, you will seldom find this. They restore films because there is a market. While there IS a market for the ORIGINAL Original Trilogy, it’s not a big one. This may not seem to be the case, but I firmly believe it’s true. The Blu-rays still sold heaps, and they were some of the worst transfers to ever hit the medium (namely TPM and ESB). They are certainly not losing money by releasing the Special Editions, are they?

They could potentially lose money by releasing the originals though (unless paired with the SEs), and that’s probably what has kept them from doing so lately – not because of Lucas. They hear the fans, but it’s not their priority as it’s not a big money-maker right now. Additionally, it’s a lot of time and money to be put towards “unfinished” films. I hate to say it, but it seems to be the case.

My two cents.

Oh, I totally get it, and I agree that it’s most important to make the unadulterated versions available; I’m just psyched to see something different in the pipeline. As for your point about everyone being free to make whatever they want with these materials, I’ve been thinking about taking a crack at a denoised SSE myself, and this might have pushed me over the edge.

Please do. It would be great to see that one cleaned up a tad more. The source is already quite good, but grain can be troublesome, especially with encoding and being blown up on a bigger screen.

Well, you have not provided enough information to duplicate your single pass correction. I’m not getting the same color results you are using Vegas. Some more detail would be helpful in giving you feedback on whether it solves some of the most egregious color problems that plague nearly every frame of the ANH BR.

Here are my settings, that may be where I have misguided you. I can see I already missed one tiny detail with the levels tool. Please let me know if you need any additional details.

Original Trilogy Blu-rays - SPC (Single Pass Corrections) (Released)
Time

For a few months I’ve been toying around with doing a basic single pass correction (minus crawls) to the entirety of the Blu-ray files. While I have other threads correcting the Blu-rays, they are aimed at downgrading to the '97 SE (my personal favorite of the SEs). This project is geared at simply correcting the Blu-rays and providing templates for users to create their own editions from.

Please note, these colors are not theatrically accurate. Rather, they are geared towards reversing the effects of the grading for the Blu-rays. From these corrections, the editor can decide how they want to proceed with their edit. Additionally, I know there are much more issues with the Blu-rays – but that can be saved for whoever wants to edit their edition.

If any of these corrections do not seem right (in terms of levels, contrast) please let me know. I want to make a basis for the fans.

Special thanks to Dr.Dre and Harmy for indirectly providing very good example for me to base these corrections off of.

CORRECTIONS for the Feature in Sony Vegas 12 (32-bit floating point):

 1. Boosted GAMMA from 1.000 to 1.300
 2. Desaturated from 1.000 to .900
 3. Hue shift from 1.000 to 3.000
 4. Reduction of Blue highlights by -0.040
 5. Reduction of Red shadows by -0.010

CORRECTIONS for the Crawl in Sony Vegas 12 (32-bit floating point):

 1. Boosted GAMMA from 1.000 to 1.300
 2. Saturated from 1.000 to 1.100
 3. Hue shift from 1.000 to 3.000
 4. Reduction of Blue highlights by -0.040
 5. Reduction of Red shadows by -0.010

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * NON SPOILER * THREAD
Time

Did anyone notice how the trailer sorta mimicked the style of the first TFA teaser?

 1. Open on a landscape with a jumpscare and low music
 2. Narration over trailer footage from a strange voice
 3. BB-8 running (a stretch)
 4. Brief look at Kylo Ren with his lightsabre near the end
 5. Frantic speeding of ships / speeders

There is surely more, but I’ve only seen the trailer twice and this is all that can come to mind. If this is spoiler talk, I’ll move it.

I enjoyed TFA. It was a rehash of Episode 4 yeah but wasn’t that kind of the point?

History does repeat itself. It’s not a smart move thematically, but it does make sense realistically. But we all knew coming into this film that it would be soft-reboot and play it safe. This is perfectly fine if they go in new directions for VIII and IX.
