They’re straight rips from the LaserDisc.

This is great news – thank you for this endeavor. Out of curiosity, do you have an ESB SE print as well, or just ANH and ROTJ?

The general public also doesn’t realize that grain is part of film, so none of this is surprising.

Currently in the market to replace my old CLD-980, which is a standard model at best. My budget isn’t strict, as I preferably want the best that I can get, but I’m not sure if I want to shell out $2k for an X0 just yet.

Currently on my radar:
LD-S1
LD-S9
X9
HLD-1000

Can anyone speak for or against any of these models? Should I just bite the bullet and go for the X0? My main prefernce is a model that a 3D comb filter, DNR, and S-Video out (seems to be common amongst all these anyways). I don’t need MUSE or AC-3 out, just want something that can deliver a better picture than what I’m getting from my standard machine.

Depends on your VCR. I have one of those fancy “pro-sumer” decks and it looks pretty decent, but I’d much rather play the LaserDisc on it instead… or the GOUT DVDs for that matter.

I’ll go a more original route and ask why you didn’t invest in the LaserDiscs instead… 😉

…in all seriousness though, congrats! Seeing the authentic OOT is a very nice experience.

I’ll definitely be donating some $$$ to this project and the SE scans as well. TPM is my favorite prequel, and seeing it properly preserved would be a dream come true. Fingers crossed this goes ahead smoothly!

If your VCR doesn’t have an internal TBC and DNR, then I’d suggest not going any further with this. Standard decks really aren’t all that great for preservation.

I believe that the DVDs have more resolution than the actual LaserDiscs, being that they were sourced from the pressing master used for the LaserDiscs – so this upscale does beat a LaserDisc rip by far. But even with upscaling, you cannot create information that simply isn’t there; the GOUT masters being non-anamorphic puts us at a massive disadvantage. That being said, this has made the GOUT look slightly better, due to the filers utilized.

Here’s where each iteration of the masters falls in line, in terms of quality (from best to worst):
Original Film -> Telecine Master -> Pressing Master (GOUT source) -> LaserDisc & VHS

Thank you all for your feedback. Very happy to hear that the GOUT is still useful even with all the other projects going on now.

There could be more done to these in the future, but the further you filter the GOUT, the more synthetic it looks… and it already looks bad! I don’t plan to make V2 of this project, unless there are errors in the encodes themselves, though there shouldn’t be.

For those who have surround systems, I hope you’re able to utilize the PCM mix with ProLogic. All three films have power sound, and need to be heard in uncompressed quality.

The trilogy is now complete… on the Spleen!

My only small suggestion/request is that perhaps you could reinsert the Ep 4, ANH crawl. The XO project scan should provide an awesome starting point, though I think that’s NTSC sourced so you may want to look into a PAL laserdisc rip. Or not - this looks great and is an awesome GOUT project. Otherwise, perhaps I could get a lossless copy from you to assemble it for myself without re-encoding?

What were your encode settings for this, btw?

I would like to put the '81 crawl back in (perhaps sourced from DeSpecialized v2.7?), but wasn’t exactly sure as to how it could be done. I’ll look into it for a V2 release. TESB will be up later this afternoon!

I did a double pass encode, average bitrate of 15mpbs, with a max of 25mbps.

Good idea, I’ll start with ANH first, paired with the '93 LD audio in LPCM.

That was fixed with the final script, I noticed that I didn’t update it in the first post, my mistake.

All the films have been rendered out from VirtualDub and are ready for Blu-ray h.264 encoding in Vegas! The bitrate of these files will be around 15mbps, which should be more than enough. These should be on the Spleen by Wednesday.

Thankfully, I already created these GOUT-synced subtitles (utilizing theatrical placement and timing) a few months back for my Blu-ray project, so they’re all done, minus a blur effect. I will include English subtitles from Project Threepio, but not for the Alien subtitles – many Blu-ray players I’ve tested the MKVs on can’t display the text correctly for some reason…

A NEW HOPE has been rendered out from VirtualDub. Now I’m going to add alien subtitles in Vegas. More soon!

Right now my plan is to only include the '93 Stereo mixes in LPCM. I am considering just muxing in the rest from Harmy’s DeSpecialized, but I don’t know if they’re absolutely necessary (makes the files much bigger). Being that it’s GOUT synced, anyone can add in what they want later on.

I’m doing some more work to reduce shimmering (which will slow down the render speed considerably), but once that’s done, they will be ready for the Spleen. As a general question to everyone, which is preferred: a scope MKV or BD-compliant file?

I use Handbrake to create h.264 encodes, but I’m almost positive that it cannot create BD-compliant files…
