Not to get terribly off-topic, but I was wondering if you had any thoughts on AMD’s Ryzen 8 core processor lineup (as opposed to Intel’s 6 core), which I can only presume would be great for editing when paired with a Nvidia GPU?

I’m due for an upgrade, as Resolve and Vegas aren’t great with my i7-4770 and NVidia 635 at the moment.

You’re missing the point. The 35mm release print is not the same as the digital release version.

Not sure if this has been discussed before, but I believe that Rian Johnson reverted the crawl title back to the bold variant of Franklin Gothic Medium Condensed, which was used in everything post-ESB. I only noticed this during my fourth viewing of the film, but I could be mistaken. It definitely didn’t look like the font that The Force Awakens used.

The Last Jedi sits pretty well after three viewings (I hated it upon first viewing). Not sure if it’s just me, but I have to see a film a couple times before really having a verdict on it. Though I’ll admit, it took me roughly seven viewings of The Force Awakens to truly let it sink in.

Two out of three of the Sequel Trilogy films (thus far) have ended with the Force Theme. Out of all the issues with the Sequel Trilogy, this is one that really irks me. It made sense in the context of both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but you’d think Williams wouldn’t be so repetitive.

And there is no doubt in my mind it will be the same case for Episode IX.

So do you mind people like me who walked away from the force awakens after one viewing, knew I did not like it and decided I was not interested in the sequel trilogy at all and particularly not forcing myself to watch it six times to help put my mind at rest over why who what where and when I did and did not like.

If you know it doesn’t work for you the first time around, then don’t waste your time. I respect your stance and appreciate you being civil about your disliking for it. For people like me, it just takes some time to take it in, which hurts my wallet.

No scream, but BB-8 says the traditional line, but in droid-speak (according to Johnson).

My biggest gripe with the Sequel Trilogy is that each film (so far) has ended with a variation of the Force Theme. For The Force Awakens, it was fitting, and seemed to work with The Last Jedi as well, but I’d prefer not to hear the same theme over and over again at the end of every film. Even Rogue One used it!

Episodes I-VI all had different ending pieces, why can’t this be the same for the Sequel Trilogy?

Ha I love that then cause that means they broke at least two conventional SW tropes; a saber on saber duel and a person saying that line, which frankly starts to feel so redundant by this point so I’m glad a beep-boop speaking Droid “said” it this time.

To each their own. Unfortunately, I’m a traditionalist when it comes to Star Wars, so the execution of the line and the lack of Wilhelm scream is really annoying. That being said, it doesn’t make the movie any less great.

Saw it again last night. It definitely grows on you with repeated viewings, but Luke’s death is still very hard to deal with. Johnson did knock it out of the park though. Very much looking forward to his trilogy.

I read somewhere that the sound editor for The Last Jedi did not include the routine Wilhelm scream, but rather used a different sound effect that was also used in Rogue One. Has anyone heard about this?

Did anyone hear a Wilhelm scream or did Rian Johnson throw that away too? 😉

I’m not sure what I watched, but it definitely felt odd. The soundtrack was repetitive and lackluster. Shame.

Any idea if 2.6 supports plugins from 2.5.8? It took me awhile to get it working, and I don’t want to lose some scripts just by upgrading…

I finally decided to watch the saga in episodic order and I am very much regretting it. There’s just less emotional investment watching it this way, in my opinon. I’ll stick to the normal viewing of OT, PT, ST etc.

If one is using a decent consumer player, could it be possible that you could use filters that might get you close to X0 quality? Not spot on, but close enough to save someone $2,000!

I captured a portion of my ANH Faces LaserDisc and ran the composite signal through a Line TBC / Comb Filter to convert the signal to S-Video before the signal ran into my Hauppauge USB-Live 2. After the IVTC process, I ran the video through AviSynth and did my work from there.

Here’s my current script that seems to do very smart and modest noise removal and sharpening. As you can see, nothing fancy, just one plugin:

It removes basic player noise and sharpens what’s left over. To my eye, this doesn’t look all that bad, but it could definitely still use some work. I’m interested to see if anyone knows of any filters that might further make this capture even better.

I did my scaling in VirtualDub paired with AviSynth, personally. But I’m sure there are other ways to do it.

In 1965, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer was rebroadcast across the world and featured two substantial edits: one being an additional ending scene, and the other being a new musical number.

For the original VHS and LaserDisc releases, the 1965 master was utilized. But for DVD and Blu-ray releases, a strange hybrid cut was created utilizing the 1964 audio mix and 1964/1965 visuals.

For example, on the DVD, when Santa is delivering the Misfit toys to their new homes, you can hear out of sync wind sound effects that were originally present in the 1964 broadcast. These sound effects were not present in the 1965 broadcast, nor on the VHS and LaserDisc releases. Additionally, the 1965 edit used an alternate take of Santa’s iconic “Merry Christmas” line, while the DVD uses the original take.

My goal here is to preserve the original 1965 edit of the special utilizing the NTSC Classic Media DVD, as it contains the “Fame & Fortune” song in high quality, as well as the LaserDisc audio. As of right now, I currently own the NTSC DVD and have IVTC’d the footage back to 24p, but I do not own the LaserDisc. However, I do have the VHS and could temporarily use that as a base for the project, but the audio quality would not be ideal.

My current LaserDisc player only offers basic RCA A/V out, so I would only be able to capture analog sound, from my basic understanding of LaserDiscs. Would anyone happen to own the LaserDisc and be able to rip the digital PCM audio from it?

I was going to ask why a 35mm print would have an edge over the current Blu-ray… but then I did a comparison. The color timing done for the Blu-ray is a mess, and they’ve crushed a lot of shadow detail. I’m guessing this is the case with most of the Bond transfers (minus OHMSS – which has clipped whites)?

ATTACK OF THE CLONES is already a hard movie to sit through by nature, but that doesn’t mean it can’t look nice!

Utilizing a 1:1 Blu-ray rip of the 2002 film, I’ve started regrading the entire film to look less like digital, and fix the inherent color issues present in the 2011 Blu-ray. I’ve adjusted highlight values as well as the hue rotation to make something much more visually appealing.

Take a look at the comparison link below and let me know what you think. To quote Lucas himself, “I may have gone too far in a couple places”… only in terms of correction!
