Thomas & Friends - Classic Series NTSC Preservation (US dub) (a WIP)
Time

I am still working on it. Series 4-6 are finished, however 1, 2, 3, & 7 present strange issues.  Series 3 needs to be color corrected as the restored & remastered DVDs were sourced from faded prints, Series 1 & 2 have missing US narration for Ringo Starr, and Series 7 is missing narration for the US redub done by Michael Brandon. They've aired on TVOKids, but the rips I have are of low quality and I can't use them.

I'm on the fence with the TB due to their DVD5 quality.  It really is a shame too.  Maybe, if you had the 5 Star Collection of the SE it would help.  At least maybe a combination of the two could end up sourcing a better overall picture making it easier to work with.

Everytime they're on eBay, they get pricey. Weren't their torrents of the DVDs on the spleen?

For the LD, althor has that covered, as he has much better equipment and resources. The TB set isn't great, but when downscaled and with a grain plate, could look okay, minus the VHS quality ROTJ.

I own the DVD set.  Would it be of some use?

Most certainly. Could use it as a reference and might be able to make them

a bit more presentable.

Star Wars OT '97 SE - TB Airing SD Preservation (* unfinished project *)
Time

I've updated the first post as I'm now going to use another source for a simple SD preservation of the 1997 SE in NTSC.

I'm currently working with the TB rips off the spleen, and ANH & ESB look great. I've only converted the films to NTSC/23.97p thus far, and haven't done any color correction or audio syncing.

I did add a grain plate on top of the video to cover up artifacts, but the smearing is still noticeable.

One issue I have is that the ROTJ looks the worst out of the lot. Color artifacts, dot crawl, and looks like it was deinterlaced. Does anyone have a better version of a rip of ROTJ (other than LD)?

Another thing, ESB has some noticeable EE compared to ANH.

Here's some comparisons: http://imgur.com/a/w9hg3

Help: looking for... 'Thomas and the Magic Railroad' - the Workprint of...
Time

In 2000, Thomas & the Magic Railroad was released theatrically around the world and was met with poor box office reception. Throughout the film, many of the subplots felt shortened and a mysterious man on a motorcycle made a cameo, who was also seen in the trailer atop the evil Diesel 10. It was as if something was missing.

In 2007, an earlier draft from April 1999 was discovered and show an entirely different film with another villain, P.T. Boomer, and gave more answers to the backstory of Peter Fonda’s character - Burnett Stone. When watching the trailers for the film again, it was obvious that the 1999 script was shot to completion and featured the human villian, different voice actors for many of the engines, and other scenes with Peter Fonda. The film was cut due to test audiences finding P.T. Boomer too scary and thinking the original voices didn’t fit their intended characters. Ultimately, the film was chopped to pieces.

Later that same year, the original cut of the climactic chase scene was discovered. A professor in Canada (who also worked as sound editor on the film), was in possession of a piece of the original workprint and would let students use it to sync up their own music. The workprint scene revealed different voice actors for all the engines and PT Boomer’s arrival on Sodor.

There is no definite answer as to where the full original workprint is, but if any of you have any information on where this could be procured, it would be greatly appreciated. The director, Allcroft, has claimed she has the original cut on VHS but she is bombarded with questions on her FB on a daily basis so there’s not much to get out of her.

VHD?

I got a VHD machine a few years back and ripped JAWS 3D myself, but it was MPEG2, and would love to do it again some day, when I get a better model.

I'm pretty sure poita has everything necessary to do this well. Shoot him a PM to ask!

Might just do that, but I know he's incredibly busy already with other obligations but will ask when the timing is right. I also do have the Sensio DVD, so that's usable at the moment, although it's 2.20:1, I believe.

Thank you for your thought and effort, Lasedisc Master!

My friend in Italy managed to capturing this recent airing of JAWS: THE REVENGE, and it has the original cut with Jake's death and the non-explosion ending. I'm going to try and put this rip on the BD-R I make of this, just need to sync it up with the English track.

Like I said, Vudu or bust.
I'd be interested to see how it stacks up against the SKY rip.

The SkyHD rip was fantastic quality compared to what I've seen on TV over the years. I can post a video sample if you want. I believe the real advantage was the 12mbps vbr.

Very curious to see how well Vudu with some grain added to it will look, especially with the compression rate being close to SkyHD's compression.

I also added the TBS 90s airing of the film as a bonus feature to the disc. Has three extra scenes not present on the DVD release. Should be released next week.

Almost finished with the BD-25 of JAWS 2. I ported over the bonus features from the US DVD (minus the picture slideshows) to the Blu-ray. The 'Deleted Scenes' are also non-anamorphic, which is a bummer, but there's not much sense in upscaling them because they're sourced from an old master, much like the GOUT, so there would be aliasing.

Now onto procuring JAWS 3 & JAWS: THE REVENGE.

So, JAWS 2 has been preserved in 1080/24p, thanks to the help of x5gb! The SkyHD rip was the same master used on iTunes and Vudu, shame Universal haven't cleaned this one up, yet they restored 3D and Revenge in 2011-2012. Going to mock up a BD menu with extras ported over from the retail US DVD.

For JAWS 3D & JAWS: THE REVENGE, I have low-bitrate 720p rips for starters. I hear that Vudu offers 10mbps bitrate while iTunes only offers around 4-5mbps. Would it be worth it ripping the VUDU HDX versions for 3D and REVENGE? Or if someone has already capped them would be so kind as to lend me their rips?

Downloaded the JAWS 2 rip, it looks great, but I'm confused as it's 1080/23i. I think it's false interlaced, so I could probably set the field order to progressive and convert it to 23.976p.

Here are the screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/wWz3Q

Looks to be DNR'ed a bit, so I might add some fake film grain to add some "fake detail" and that might help cover up macroblocking in some areas. Let me know if I'm going the wrong route.

@TripleHBK - the quality is decent, and is definitely actual HD, so I might want to use that until something better comes my way, or if SkyHD still has the Jaws films on there for ripping?

I have access to HDTV airings of the films from IFC last Summer.  I've only actually taken the time to rip Jaws the revenge so far (the rest are still on my cable box), but in it's raw form (complete with commercials and in 1080i format) it's 12.1 GB in size.  I was having problems with my Cable signal around this time, and I actually recorded them twice in an effort to clear up digital artifacts.  I believe these 2nd rips are of better quality, but I actually haven't watched any of these presentations, so i can't promise they're all that great.

I rip things in 1080i at 13mbps (the highest settings my capture device supports).  I know AMC has been showing the films lately as well and I could capture fresh airings from there if need be also (assuming that the films are shown again).  The HDTV airings didn't look like upscales to me, but I can't state that definitively.  I'm happy to help as long as I'm given access to the final product (and preferably if you could organize them into a BDMV format as I'd like to create BD-R's.)

Sure, any help is appreciated and I will upload the final BD-Rs to the spleen. Are the films cropped with logos on AMC and IFC?

The IFC logo comes on and eventually fades away for a bit.  Sadly it's there for quite a bit of the movie if I'm not mistaken.  The AMC broadcasts don't have any logos from what i remember but I don't have captures of those at the moment.  I'd have to record them the next time they air.  I initially went with the IFC captures as at the time this was the only place airing the films in HD that I was aware of as I don't have any premium movie channels, and I also know that IFC doesn't edit their films for content, so i was guaranteeing myself uncensored versions, something I doubt AMC does.  I never planned to make them into a full on project as I figured at some point official discs would be released, and for me this would suffice until that time.  The films were all presented in 1.78:1.

Could you possibly send me some screenshots from the JTR airing? I don't mind the logo, can work around it with other sources, even if it's 1.78, would still be nice for an HD transfer.

So, your going to finish and upload the horrible Jaws sequels but your Star Wars projects were never finished.  Interesting.

Still working on Completionist Saga, don't have enough elements for release yet, and my FACES LD captures were finished. Cancelled the 97 SE captures because I had a bad set of disc, etc.

GOAL: To preserve the ‘Jaws’ sequels in 720/1080p utilizing multiple sources.

**FILMS & SOURCES - **

JAWS 2: SkyHD HDTV rip (1080/24p) BD-25 [June 2015]

JAWS 3D: TBD iTunes (2D), Vudu (2D), PAL DVD (2D), HDTV (2D/??), and Sensio (3D SBS)

JAWS: THE REVENGE: TBD<span style=“line-height: 14.3999996185303px;”> </span><span style=“line-height: 14.3999996185303px;”>iTunes, Vudu, PAL DVD, & HDTV (??)</span>

I know there are HDTV rips of all three films, but they’re all highly compressed and I’m not sure if they’re true HD.

The films are available on VUDU & iTunes in HD, however, when I rented JAWS: THE REVENGE, it seemed to be a mere upscale, but I’ve heard varying reports from people who own the films on VUDU and iTunes.

The films were also re-released in a 3-pack here in the states. The transfers for JAWS 3D (2D) & REVENGE are brand new, but aren’t high resolution. The same transfer for REVENGE is used on iTunes, while the 2003 2D transfer is used for iTunes/VUDU.

My best bet would be to upconvert the PAL DVDs, being that there’s extra resolution, but even then, it looks bad because MPEG-2 compression to HD is noticeable.

Any thoughts?
