It does seem like the dagger would have been made recently by Ochi, doesn’t it? It may be easier to find one moment to state that somewhere rather than change several moments to make the blade seem older.

If the blade was made, say, fifteen years ago, then it would even make sense to keep the goonies moment in.

But why would he create a dagger with a shape resembling the death star wreck?

JJ/Terrio were saying in the documentary that they wanted an object the Sith cultists would pass to one another to guide them to Exegol. The problem is that the dagger doesn’t point them to Exegol, it only points them to the wayfinder - which can only be in one place at once. The stupid concept here is that these cultists are returning the wayfinder to the Death Star wreckage every time they come back and that Rey didn’t enter that room to find it empty - as in all likelihood it ought to be.

I am of the perhaps unpopular opinion that the goonies moment where she uses the dagger to find Palpatine’s tower actually worked in the original, and its absence is noticeable here. If I did a version of this edit, that moment wouldn’t be removed.

I don’t hate it, but I also am not crazy about it. Which is why I’m fine with what Ascendant does.

Hmmm. Is there a specific part of the movie that makes it clear it’s ancient and wasn’t forged in its entirety by Ochi relatively recently?

This is roughly how I envision it was originally written to be like:

“Rey….wherever you are…You are hard to find.

“You are hard to get rid of.”

“I pushed you in the desert because I needed to see it…I needed you to see it…who you are. We are more similar than you’d like to admit…"

“You’re lying.”

“I’ve never lied to you… your parents did get rid of you. As mine did to me.”

“Don’t!”

“That much darkness in a child - it’s enough to scare anyone.”

“I don’t want this!”

“We hated our parents for it.”

“No!”

“Luke betrayed me… the same way your friends will for you.”

(Brief vision of Kylo’s TLJ backstory and possibly Rey’s friends being hurt)

“The only person who understands you is me.”

“Stop talking.”

(Cutaway to heroes capture)

“Your parents were found by one of the Emperor’s agents. He wanted to know where you were… but they were too drunk to remember.”

(Cut vision of Rey’s parents getting killed.)

“So that’s where you are. You know why the Emperor’s always wanted you, Rey. I’ll come tell you.”

“Why did the Emperor come for me? Tell me.”

“He wanted to bring us together, Rey. We are a dyad in the Force. Two, that are one. Unstoppable.”

“You are drawn to the dark, and I to the light. The Sith rule of two was meant to fulfill an ancient prophecy - one that would see the dyad rule the galaxy. We’ll kill him, together, and take the throne.”

(Removes his helmet)

“You know what you need to do. You know.”

“I know.”

I believe the original film focused almost entirely on the dyad. It’s why there are lingering threads of the two of them being on the throne together in the theatrical release despite no such footage existing. Kylo was probably focusing entirely on how they’ve always been the same person through the Force and it’s their destiny to rule together (Sith prophecy - the rule of two manifested into what it was always meant to be), and how Palpatine is willing to give it to them because of how weak he is. But then the whole “your coming together will be your undoing” twist happens.

Sees talk of a V5 I will never be done rewatching TROS apparently. Real talk though, I’ve experienced V4 and overall? This is a marked improvement over V3, in particular, the AI lines. Some are still wonky here and there and definitely with headphones I can hear the shift but it is significantly more seamless. In particular, the Poe lines I criticized before now straight-up just sound like alternate takes they are that scarily good.

In my opinion the only way you notice them is under both of the following conditions:

  1. You know exactly what has been changed.
  2. You’re watching with headphones on.

I’d say that’s pretty darn good, all things considered. I’ve seen stuff on Disney+ with significantly worse ADR - namely Secret Invasion.

The original line wasn’t delivered that way, although I can understand why you might want the new one to be since it’s a sensitive topic. I think it’s important to keep in mind that the only unfortunate thing here is that Leia didn’t tell her - the good side to all of it is that Leia was only more encouraged to continue training her. So he shouldn’t really be that sad, ya know? It would be one thing if in the next sentence they’re talking about how Leia didn’t initially want to train her after learning this.

Apparently even the writers realized how bad that would be and that’s why they threw in the whole “cloned son” stuff. They got lucky there’s precedence for a clone of somebody being called a son (Boba). The difference is that Jango actually loved Boba, whereas Palps never did to Rey’s dad so it doesn’t make much sense why he referred to him in such a way.

It’s still limited by mouth movements. What we’re doing with this edit is only replacing lines where the character has a mask on or when they’re speaking from off screen. But we’re not far off from being able to change lip movements easily - be on the lookout for an AI software used for dubbing foreign films.

Yeah, I do have to admit it is quite shocking though. I never would have believed this would be possible even last year.

Hmmm… what if we made that connection to TLJ even clearer?

“Leia had sensed it in moments during your training.”

And yeah, that is awfully poetic. Whereas Luke reacted in fear and (initially) sought to destroy Ben to prevent that darkness from ever terrorizing the galaxy, Leia responds with love and care, and it pays off big. I think I’m definitely willing to overlook the coincidental nature of it all for the greater narrative.

I’m pretty certain that’s similar to what RL (or somebody else?) said a few pages back. I think it’s the best way to take things in a Rey Nobody edit. Their dyad forms because they’re both related to Anakin - Rey is “a” chosen one and Ben’s grandfather is “the” chosen one. Although I’m pretty sure that making it so Palpatine orchestrated both the creation of Anakin and Rey by “influencing the midichlorians” would make the kiss at the end even worse than Luke and Leia’s.

You’re probably referring to that canon comic which showed Palpatine behind a pregnant Shmi, but I believe the comic writer later stated that was just what Vader suspected to be the truth, and not reality. It’s best if both Anakin and Rey were gifted their powers and created asexually by the cosmic Force, rather than Sith trickery.

Funnily enough I was having this same discussion with myself last week. I generated a bunch of different options - most of them far too wordy.

At this point I want to go with whatever we all agree would be best here. I had the same initial thought as DZ realizing that Leia should know something was up with Palps if she knew Rey was one. But yeah, Leia would just have the same thought that we all had after seeing the film and before the novelization - that Palpatine had a secret love child during his reign. And he could be completely dead even if it meant he had an heir.

I’m wary of having it possible to sense somebody’s genetics purely by being around them. Luke and Leia definitely realized they shared some sort of connection in the OT, but it took Kenobi spelling it out for him to realize it. Especially since being a Palpatine is something so out of left field. Then again, Leia would have spent plenty of time around Palpatine in the Senate. I could buy it if it was more of a vision-like thing instead of just feeling it, but there’s no real way to write that in a concise way.

I’m really hoping that Rey being the focus of that movie is a bait and switch. The main novelization of TROS actually makes the case that the reason Jannah and Finn rebelled is because they were Force sensitive. I’d love it if the central plot of the next movie was Rey training both Finn and Jannah as students. It could be about how the two of them want to help as many ex-stormtroopers as possible, but that would take away from their Jedi duties elsewhere. Maybe the two of them also develop feelings for each other and we can finally answer the question of whether or not the latest generation of Jedi are allowed to form connections like in legends.

It was RL’s idea which was inspired by Nev. The goal is to make it so that Poe is still the morally righteous one of the trio which plays better off of the ex-stormtrooper and scavenger. It makes it more funny that Finn is poking at him for it because it probably genuinely annoys Poe that he had to do that stuff. Plus, it lines up better with canon than the retcon which TROS introduces. He could have done this mission for the Republic at any time while he was working for them. True, it’s stupid of him to go back, but desperate times and all that. He definitely did not want to get caught by Zorri, that’s for sure.
