With the removal of the light speed skipping, Poe says, “How thick do you think that ice wall is?” and then boom, instant light speed and the scene ends. Can we get a shot of his hand on the accelerator or an interior shot of them jumping to light speed or something? It feels way, way too rushed without showing them making the jump.

I’ve gotta be honest, I really don’t notice anything different with the newest version of the Shaak Ti scene…
It still seems like everybody’s voices are coming from the right channel.

I was wondering if you were able to fix those audio issues I mentioned? I really enjoyed the edit besides that.

I’ve just watched Hal’s v3 workprint.

I really feel that the absence of the much hated ‘light speed skipping’ sequence slightly compromises the scene.

I know Hal’s reasons, I know a lot of people are wrapped up in the ‘tech/science’ of it…but I think it’s absence is jarring. The falcon/spy scene now just ends much too abruptly and lacks a crescendo…

Hal have you tried putting it back in? I’m not saying you have to like it…but have you tried it to get a feel in how it works from a pacing perspective?

I’m having a lot of trouble with the chroma key on the Star Destroyer (because the free program I use doesn’t have chroma key.) Does anyone have any suggestions for this?

I could render out my background plate (with moving waterfalls and clouds) and have someone else comp in the destroyer?

I could be wrong about this but doesn’t the Star Destroyer need to be a model from the old Empire? Why would it be a First Order type of Star Destroyer?

Actually, the Last Jedi does it too. That’s one of the reasons I wished they had left in the Alternate Opening, where Finn waking up in the dome is the first shot.

Ehhh. I was actually okay with it in TLJ. Reason being is that there are ships going directly down to the surface and the camera sort of follows them.

Since we’re discussing that part of the movie, I wanted to ask something. Why did we remove the shot of the Ewok’s from the front?

Just noticed a small continuity error. Rey’s new vision at the beginning shows a glimpse of her shooting lightning out of her hand on Pasanna, only it isn’t yellow in the vision.
EDIT: Looks like this workprint doesn’t have this change but just wanted to let you know anyways.

I was actually going to suggest removing Rey saying that line to BB8 on the skiff during the chase scene too. Seems highly unlikely that she would doubt a droids ability.

She’s not. It’s a reference to Leia who says the same thing to her earlier.

Please don’t remove the dyad exposition for the sake of it being exposition. It’s the only reveal that ties all three of these disjointed movies together, imo.
EDIT: It also creates several new problems for the movie. How the hell can you explain Vader’s mask and Rey’s lightsaber teleporting without the dyad? Crazy.

Oh I see, my bad. Perhaps a wipe would look the best then, but as you said earlier it could be extended slightly.

Seeing as how the original didn’t have a wipe it’s probably best to replicate that.

Would you mind if I mixed this part for you? I do audio (not a video guy like most of you), so I could get the voices to sound more like the chatter Poe’s hearing in the beginning part of the scene. I wouldn’t have a problem getting them to sit on top of the music and spreading them out so they don’t sound like they’re sat right on top of each other.

Just as a show of what I can do, I’m currently working on giving the Knights of Ren voices, here’s my first attempt at recreating their vocal sound based off the grunts when Ben kills them. (Once we’ve pinned down the lines we want, we’ll need three other voices to join mine for this project if anyone’s interested!)

Liked the idea so I made a quick test. It works really well with Poppa’s tie fighter’s flying above the forest, would be nice though to have a shot of Vader’s castle with the 3 fighters flying by to tie it all together.

The shot of the transports landing I thought looked usable, too. Maybe try putting that in as well?
EDIT: I just had an idea. Could we put a shadow travelling across the land below the ties that is in the shape of Kylo Ren’s shuttle?

Yes. When Finn says, “You were a spice runner?” to Poe he responds with something like “You were a stormtrooper? And you were a scavenger? We can do this all day.” I personally liked that joke, so I would prefer not to mess with it.

Cut to interior of Star Destroyer, as Vader’s helmet emerges and Kylo places his hand on it. Maybe Vader says something vaguely relevant or just the vision that was there originally. Kylo begins to walk off.

This makes even more sense considering that he’s about to pay a visit to his grandfather’s castle. Of course he’d commune with the mask.

The very beginning of the scene still has a portion from where I removed the ship, but I didn’t know how much to cut (some editors like to play around with footage or maybe it could be taken away with a wipe or something). This was really just a rough draft to see if I could do it, it seems kind of low quality so I might have to look into trying to find a way to clean it up a little before somebody actually uses it.

One thing I think we should do to any reused shots is mirror the image. It usually does a good job of making it look new.

I agree. When I first read the leaks online I knew that it all depended on the delivery of that line for it to be cringe or not. I like this delivery way more.
