 At the time AOTC and ROTS were made, there were no 2K cameras on the marketplace. So the "original (digital) negative" of Episodes II and III is 1080p resolution.  Very, very sadly. So what you see in the theatre, even IMAX, is basically just a projected Blu-Ray in some sense.

Not sad to me.   Crappy movies shot on crappy HD video instead of on film.

At least the originals were not shot so crappy if they were no one would be fans.  The original films had real handcrafted artistry, models, puppets and glass matte paintings as well as specific photographic processes used, lenses and film stock chosen by the director/cinematographer to give the films their unique look.

Once you get to Episode II digital artists who probably did some shots in movies suddenly were doing all the shots but the live action.

All we are left with is some incredibly expensive video game cutscenes.  But without the interactivity of a game or a games sometimes awesome story.

At least Phantom Menace theatrical cut can be restored for blu ray for those who want it, i can't get by the first twenty minutes on my laserdisc the film is just awful.

But as terrible as episode 1 was you had a artist like Doug Chiang actually doing real paintings for the pre production art and not computer mock ups like Ryan Church.  It was shot on film.  It had real models shot and miniatures built, sets etc.  And Yoda was a puppet, not as good as the one used on the originals but a far cry from the bad cgi yoda in II and III that looked like a cartoon frog on speed when fighting.

At lot more effort was put into the screenplay even though the film does not show this.  Phantom took as long as the original star wars to write.

It was like once they got to clones and sith they were operating on auto pilot.  All the effort went into the set up chapter.  Other than the art department and cgi artists busy, the movies came together incredibly lazy.

All the prequels amounted to were a back story, but a back story where not much actually happens until the end of sith.  The entire thing is at least more than 5 hours of pure cgi filler and inane talking scenes, interparsed with frantic action.  But nothing really happens on the screen terrible moving or interesting.  In fact the galaxy goes to hell in a handbasket and anakin goes bad just to set up the original trilogy.

So Lucas original outline which was nothing more probably than a couple paragraphs, is really puffed up in the movies but not really developed.  Anakin is not developed as a character like Luke was in the original trilogy, what happened to Lucas?

It is really a shame what a good character director and writing team could have done with this concept, which is not a bad idea.  Lucas is sometimes a good generator of ideas.  It is just the pathetically inept way in which the concept was handled.  In a very obvious we go from point A to point B, and we don't even need the set up these 1 film and 2 videos provide.  Kenobi's speech in his house in star wars covers the material well enough.

I take it you didn't like the prequels then?

Even if blu-ray is the best episodes 2 and 3 will ever look, It is still pretty good for the time being and should be for another maybe 10 years? Most people still don't have blu-ray players and 1080p capable televisions. But yeah, not too bright of Lucas to do that. Then again, he didn't really seem to care so why bother with film when HD cameras are easier?

I think the OT should've been scanned at 8k because like the Wizard of Oz, is one of those rare movies that deserve the finest treatment.

Another way to make Star Wars perfect is to pretend George Lucas died prior to 1995 and all the projects made after were done by somebody else.

If Lucas really "spliced in" the CGI to permantely alter the o-negs it obvious his intention is to destroy the the best quality sources of the OT so he has an excuse to not realse them on blu-ray DVD. I have a question? Is Adywan's Revisited good enough resolution to be scanned at 4 or 8k and printed to film for theaters? My assumption is not because it is SD dVD quality. I don't know how much of the movie he used the German HD broadcasts since it sounds like he did not get them until after he had begun working on Revisited with the SD '04 DVD of ANH.

Skyjedi2005 private messaged me this when I asked him if the negatives of the originaltrilogy still exist:

"The negatives exist but we have to take Lucas word that they were physically altered in 1997 without having the visual proof he is not lying."

ChainsawAsh, how are you coming along on this? I think I'm going to ditch my edit, I just lost a bunch of work by accidentally overwriting my latest work with older work. I got too many other things I want to get done this summer and I just am not patient enough to work with the software enough to get proficient.

Watching parts of ANH again I realized that the exterior of the Millenium Falcon changes perspective a lot. Obviously they used a lot of differnet sized models but the thought was always subconscious, it never really registered with me until now. Some shots look tiny like they could only crawl inside of it like in docking bay 94, but in other places like the hanger bay on the Death Styar it looks enormous like the whole set could easily fit inside of it. Either way it was never distracting and pulled me out of the movie like the Carbon Chamber did.

Does VLC player have a feature to move one frame at a time? Terminator 2 HD will only work on VLC player for some reason. ChainsawAsh, could you at least temporarily unignore me? I have some things I want to hear your opinions on in the ESB revisited thread.

So, something you see during half of the trilogy (The MF) being out of proportion doesn't bother you.......but something you see for less than 30 seconds (Vane Wing), that's slighty unusual in design, drives you crazy?!?!?!

For one thing, it is probably impossible to fix that continuity error, and it doesn't look that out of proportion to me.

Continuity errors of the interor sets being bigger than the outside of the falcon never bothered me, but the vane wing thing does, so I'm glad ady is addressing it.

  If an element can be shot with a model then a model it will be....

  If it can't then CG will be used

 

Ady, you're like the George Lucas we never had.

Okay, this turned into being a lot more than I thought, but I have so many criticisms I just put it all on one diagram.

I like this better, in order for the carbon chamber to fit inside of "the processing vane" that's going to have to be a pretty beefy width. Not to mention later in that scene we see a lot of winding hallways. I'm a little confused how they could be winding when the vane appears to be straight from the outside. Like I said in an older post, I think this was just a case of George Lucas overindulging in his obsessive compulsions to do whatever he wants with no consideration for logic or geography.

Vaderios, to keep this on topic, I just wanted to ask you if you know if Adywan is going to do anything about the Luke getting to the carbon chamber debacle? Also, your PM inbox has reached its limit and needs to be emptied. I couldn't send my last message.

Perhaps Luke rode on a transit system for 15 minutes before reaching the carbon chamber, although the way the movie cuts, makes it look like he got there right after the previous cut.

Adywan, make sure you save all your files this time so if a higher definition version of ESB comes out you can just color correct it (if necessary) and insert all the changes into it.

I would guess that room was not much more than 40 feet across. Yes it it still might be fudging a bit to get it in the vane, but not by as much as you think. Same goes for the falcon, you couldn't get those sets inside it, but it's not that far off, but it takes some fudging.

Perhaps Adywan could enhance it to look more in perspective? I never thought the interior sets of the falcon looked out of proportion, but now that you mention it, using the cockpit window as a reference, I see what you mean.

This set always baffeled me I made a post about this awhile ago and some of you guys blew it off calling it pure nonsense. Now look, you are bringing this up after blowing me off. So this wing that comes out into the middle of the shaft, is the carbon freezing chamber inside of it?

 Great news Ady, longs ways away. For the lightsabers I always wished the Jedi had a lot of different colors. The Trainees like the ones Yoda teaches in Ep2 would have colorless white ones, to show theyre just training ones, and all other Jedi would have random colors, some blue, green, purple, yellow, orange, different shades and all that.

 I like the idea of color ranks your level on the jedi training, blue is for begginers, green intermidiate, perhaps turquise advanded, purple master? Perhaps trainees just use whilte lights sabers that aren't capable of cutting through this.
