***//BUILDING EMPIRE\\: PAL & NTSC DVD - NEW EDITION NOW ONLINE! ***
Time
I found myself taking notes while watching it on what had been done wrong. You've made some crucial errors at crucial moments.

Yes Ocp it's all on my hard disc in FCP ready to be altered. I would like to hear your thoughts/suggestions. I am interested to hear what you regard as 'crucial' errors. One tends to go a little ' snow blind' after working on something so long.

I believe this is a brilliant production, and with some easy fine tuning could have been perfection'

As I said to everyone, I would love to hear your thoughts. Particularly as so many people have sent me footage etc. This project is also on-going and I would love to get a version that almost everyone is happy with. Lets face it, this thing hasn't really been 'released'. Any crucial errors can easily be corrected as I doubt they are very fundemental.

You had offered me a pre-release copy at one point, and I REALLY wish you'd let me see it before showing it to anyone else

The reason I didn't send it to just you, is because I think everyone should be given an opportunity to have an opinion on it. If truth be told, given that I invested so much time, money and effort on this, I truly wanted my own authorial stamp on it first. I also just wanted to get a version out there as the stresses of work, family life and Christmas were taking their toll at the end of 2005. Luckily things have chilled somewhat and now I am ready for a further challenge.

Furthermore, since you said you were not going to do Deleted Empire and Jedi, I was happy to go ahead and create projects of my own. These projects are not Deleted Empire and Deleted Jedi. They are very different and it is certainly not my intention to sully your reputation. I may even go on to do a Star Wars project to complete my trilogy. What I mean is, you don't need to feel as if you have a stake in this project. I was planning something similar for some time, Deleted Magic just showed me that it was possible and that there was a 'market'.

Anyway despite all that, I am confident that with your suggestions we can get this thing near perfect. And then I can upload it for everyone to see. Lets not treat this as a missed opportunity!

Yes, the trailers do have sound.

If you haven't done so already, it might be worth you dowloading Quicktime 7.

Just be aware that the trailer was made quite early on. The title of the project at that time was the rather cumbersome 'ESB: A/V Commentary'.

By the way Sky, fantastic work. I just love those covers. I am definately having one of yours for my copy of Building Empire!

I have been thinking of titles for this project. 'Building Empire' was a kind of pun on Empire Building, as in building an Empire, and coincidentally the name of a book all about Lucas.

Rather than just call this Building Jedi, I wanted something more fitting: -

RETURNING TO JEDI

I particularly like this idea as it gives some feel as to the retrospective nature of the project, whilst at the same time giving a nod to the title of the film being examined. I would love to hear what you think. But I must say I am very keen on it.

Yeah DVD Studio Pro seems to be doing this. Not sure why! Anyone? It was set to 16:9 on DVDSP so it should be ok. SUDDEN THOUGHT - Maybe I need to set it to 4:3 anamorphic. Perhaps I will try that.

Fantastic. Cant wait for Your Next Project

Classic Edition: Return of the Jedi by Ocpmovie (Released)
Time
The isolated score is courtesy of Editdroid. I don't hear the sail barge music in it (I expected something sourced from one of the Making Of specials), but there is an instrumental version of Lapti Nek which took me by surprise. Don't know source on that.

I've never heard an instrumental version either! Have you since found where is originated from? I wonder if it comes from any these

Whilst on the subject of Lapti Nek, does anyone know anymore details on this item

The trailers will give you a few alternate angles, including Luke saying "Is Darth Vader my father?"

Indeed and plenty of different c/u shots of the main stars, along with some nice alternate angles of Luke with his blue lightsaber (that is they aren't the same shot as those used in the film. They appear to be the same take though, perhaps from a B camera).

Multiscreen? Sounds like a messy way to go. Rather than trying to follow the entire film shot by shot this time, compile your clips and let their rhythm dictate your work rather than letting the rhythm of the film dictate it. You can always repeat audio, use alternate audio and music, and let the sequence play out as longer or shorter depending on what you do.

Yep, your're right, it can get very messy. After some experimentation I realise that it only works on certain clips. I really want these projects to be visual commentaries, I don't want them to end up as 3 hour epics. I take your point on using the rythm of the clips and letting that dictate the flow. It's all a learning curve and I tend to speak out on what I intend to do before I actually figure out that it's a bad idea. I think I am just going to knuckle down and get on with this.

By the way, I've just figured out that the clip seen in the end credits of Empire of Dreams, of R2-D2 cleaning Luke's X-wing, is from Return of the Jedi. I thought it was from Empire, but in the establishing shot of Dagobah, you can see a wide angle of R2 doing just that!

Well done for figuring that out. I will have to take a look... Wow! You're right. I have seen Jedi so many times and I have never noticed that!

To blur a portion of an image, you create a duplicate of the image and place it over itself. You blur one of them and crop it, with a feather around the edge

I managed to figure it out earlier, thanks! Logical really!

The trailers will give you a few alternate angles, including Luke saying "Is Darth Vader my father?"

Oh, I didn't know that! Thanks!

Well I have made some progress today - I am not working and the wife and baby are away for the night.

I have already worked through Empire of Dreams, the Lightsaber and Characters featurettes and picked out all the Jedi clips and placed them accordingly in the movie. There is also some nice interview stuff that will work great for commentary.

However, I have come across a little challenge. Some of the outtake footage has credits in the lower-third of the picture. Does anyone know of a way in Final Cut Pro to blur out the credits (similar to the way that the TC was blurred on that early ROTS rip)?

Thanks in advance

Ok, I have decided to give this ROTJ project a greenlight! It's going to take TIME though, there is so much material to use out there!

It will take a similar form to 'Building Empire'. Once again there will be commentary from a variety of sources and where possible deleted scenes will be looked at. I will also be doing a study/comparison of the 'Revenge' script.

I am interested in any of the following:

- Interviews with cast and crew from back in the day
- Decent res photos of the Sandstorm deleted scene.

Thanks in advance.

P.S - Thanks Ocp for your lengthy reply. I had already figured pretty much all that you said but it was useful nonetheless.

does this dvd have anything from the Excelsior (think it was called this) Vhs Boxset released about 10 years ago. I'm hoping it's got the clip of the AD trying to coach the Norweigan Army during the battle of Hoth...it's really funny.

"I imagine this thing would have a bit of a kick to it"

Yep, he's in there along with some more footage that was shot at the time but not shown in the 'SPFX' documentary which as you rightly say came with the Executor boxset.

I hope you enjoy it.

By the way there are a few spelling errors in Building Empire. They will be corrected.

Time is the biggest problem. I have the resources, but it's difficult fitting in life, a baby, a wife and and job with this hobby. I gave up collecting vintage figures last year for the same reason.

I will try to do Jedi first.
