Photosyth - The 'Star Wars' possibilities
Time
Microsoft have just annouced in the press, their new photo stitching software - Photosynth. Well it's actually a bit more than stitching software.

Photosynth

"With Photosynth you can:

Walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle.
Seamlessly zoom in or out of a photograph whether it’s megapixels or gigapixels in size.
See where pictures were taken in relation to one another.
Find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing.
Explore a custom tour.
Send a collection to a friend."

Fristly it looks fantastic, secondly I was wondering about the possibilities in the Star Wars fan community.

Imagine stitching together all the set photographs of the Hoth base, or Jabba's Sail Barge and being able to 'fly around' looking at it from 'any' angle. Obviously I understand the limitations but I think the possibilities could be fascinating.

I feel several projects coming on!

Original Trilogy DVD Article in Total Film
Time
The UK film magazine 'Total Film' is carrying an article in the September issue about the OUT DVD's.

The eight page spread is mostly made up of photographs (a couple of which I'd not seen in print before) and...

oh the horror....

Another Rick McCallum interview!!

It's the usual stuff from McCallum. He goes to great lengths to defend Lucas's decisions by lambasting any fan that questions them. Poor helpless, cerebrally challenged people that we are. In reference to the Han/Greedo scene McCallum drops a absolute humdinger:

"It's funny when people obsess over things like that - it' unbelievable. The person they adore and worship, who made the original film in the first place, says "This is the way it was meant to be..." And then they can't cope with it. The fans are strange, but in a delightfully damaged way."

Is Ricky-baby trying to tell me that in the 1970s, that the technology didn't exist to shoot and edit a scene where Harrison Ford uses a prop gun to shoot a guy/woman in an alien suit before the alien can shoot him? Nonsensical.

Furthermore, the average fan surely can't be much less obsessed than a man who mulled over his choices for 20 years before deciding to change them. Another groundless comment from Ricky-poos.

On a side note - a small text caption over a photo of the Death Star being built states that the builders of the space station will be revealed in the TV series. Perhaps Dante and Randal can finally settle their argument.

I would be interested in seeing some of those articles Skyjedi. How easy is it for you to scan them in and email them to me?

I am also trying desperately to track down the guy who shot some cine footage in Yuma, Arizona in 1982. I have seen some of the footage but I would love to get in contact with him and ask permission to use the rest of it (and see the rest of it!). There is apparently 8 minutes in all. I have tracked someone who knows the guy but he has had no luck at reaching him. If anyone on these forums can help, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks JD

I am making slow progress at the moment. The heat here in the UK combined with work and parenting has meant that things have almost grinded to a halt. However, I do now have:

- One interview with Mr Toby Philpott (via email) which I will be including quotes from for 'Returning to Jedi'. I also intend to put a text file of the interview transcript in the DVD-ROM extras.

- Some mostly unheard interviews from around the time on their way to me

- Some 'lightsaber construction scene' goodies in the pipeline.

- Confirmation of a deleted scene from an official source, with paperwork to back it up!

The 'doco' itself is taking shape and looking real nice!

Info Wanted: Has anyone done a Super 8 preservation of Star Wars?
Time
I don't know the answer to that question.

But i will say that you should ensure that the companies are not just going to point a camcorder at the screen whilst the projector outputs the film. You will just end up with very flickery footage.

It would be far better to get the reels to a proper telecine company. But, alas, that costs.
