My biggest problems with the sequels are the lack of explanations for things, the lack of lore. Why we had a not empire who basically were the empire, not sith who were sith, and a not rebellion who were the rebellion.
The total lack of connective tissue between Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker. Who and why were the first order, what happened to the republic, the jedi. Nothing was explained. They dropped us into the sequels without any explanation as to what had happened in 30 years. Luke had a redemptive arc but we never saw his fall. We also never got to see Han and Leia happy as a family, the republic restored or Luke teaching anyone.

What's your favourite movie(s) and why?
Time

Do you mean what are your favorite movies right now, or in past tense. Because i grew up with a ton of films i absolutely adored, but i haven’t seen them in a long time. Favorite doesn’t equal best made, or technologically the most impressive. In fact most are probably based on a memory or nostalgia. Like Return of the Jedi for instance it was the first Star Wars i watched it theaters and i fell in love with the film. Early filmgoing experiences like that, Gremlins, Ghostbusters left indelible impressions on me. Going to see A View to a Kill, License to Kill, Star Trek VI, Indiana Jones Last Crusade, Ghostbusters II, Back to the Future II etc. So mostly stuff tied to a memory of going to the films with my dad, or when i started taking my younger brother to the movies or what i watched in high school. Were i to list everything the list would be long.

I like escapist cinema, cinema of the fantastic and science fiction.I like action movies. I like Westerns swashbucklers, Comedies, Japanese cinema. I like film noir and the classics. The only genre i like very little of is horror but i like a few. I used to study film and the way films were made and i was absolutely obsessed with movies.

I wonder what my list would be now ten or fifteen years ago i would have said Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson was my favorite, before that it was the Star Wars trilogy, before that it was Steven Spielberg films. Before that it was Sean Connery 007 films, or the Star Trek movies.

A few years back it was Kurosawa films and Studio Ghibli movies. Or Sergio Leone Westerns. Long long ago, it was Errol Flynn Swashbucklers, Flash Gordon serials, Douglas Fairbanks movies. Bruce Lee movies, Godzilla movies, King Kong. The films of John Carpenter, Robert Zemeckis, James Cameron, Francis Coppola. Ridley Scott.

George Lucas's Sequel Trilogy
Time

He had decades to make further adventures of Luke Skywalker the reason it did not happen was because Lucas wasn’t interested. You read any interview after 1983 and all he talks about is wanting to do a prequel with young Obi Wan and Luke’s father. Then he spent 1994 to 2012 working on the prequel Era. In all that time he didn’t bother to write a screenplay for episode 7. And the sequel spoken of here is just a continuation of the prequels not of the OT. I’m also not convinced he did not whip this sequel treatment up very quickly to sell Lucasfilm to Disney as a sweetener, he spent years saying it was the 1-6 Saga of Darth Vader. Return of the Jedi was the end and there was no story.

There is nothing inherently wrong with 4K though, other than overzealous morons and their DVNR button. In fact its just like the bad early days of blu ray.

I don’t see any reason to pay a premium for a 4K UHD disc that looks worse than its earlier Blu Ray release for instance. Even if some will say well its graded for HDR and you get a spiffy new Atmos mix.

I don’t accept the prequels as we have them as canon. The timeline for when the Clone Wars happened for instance doesn’t make sense. We are supposed to accept Anakin was in his forties when he died and Obi Wan in his fifties.

Leia’s mom dying even though she was supposed to have survived to see her daughter on Alderaan. Never mind Yoda not actually being Obi Wan’s master.

I’m not saying i hate the movies i like aspects of them but they don’t fit pre established canon even down to Palpatine and Yoda having lightsabers.

What were your "I called it" moments?
Time

Sidious looked like the Emperor in hologram. Of course he would be the same as Palpatine.

It was so obvious he was manipulating the trade federation and Naboo into a conflict, and he was behind the creation of the clone army and both sides of the war in the Clone Wars.

He fooled everybody including the entire senate and Jedi council. Even Yoda did not notice the duplicity of the supreme chancellor. He tricked Padme into putting him into the office in the first place. He tricked Jar Jar into giving him the powers of a dictator.

The story only works in the prequels because good is dumb.

As for predictions go. I kind of figured Rey would be a Skywalker, just not adopted. I also figured Finn was force sensitive since early in force awakens. I never guessed Rey was a Palpatine since they just made it up near the end of filming the movie, how could i have seen it the writers did not plan it.

Opinion: Return Of The Jedi is Very Underrated. Do You Agree?
Time

I would say the end is quite bittersweet. Anakin was redeemed but Luke lost his father, Leia the woman who Luke had deep feelings for ended up being his sister. And he all alone is supposed to revive the Jedi Order, despite losing both of his teachers Obi Wan and Yoda. And having no idea what he is supposed to do other than to train Leia as instructed by Yoda. Pass on What you have learned.

Since we know Luke fell to hubris just like Obi Wan and continued the cycle. I don’t see a happy teddy bear picnic ending to the Saga. I’ve seen the Disney trilogy. I know what happens next.

How many times have you bought the movies?
Time

I just bought the entire trilogy from 1986 on Japanese laserdisc. Those were the only ones i did not have. With the exception of not owning the second Definitive box, or any of the special edition releases Boxed set or singles. I just need to get Making of Star Wars to complete my red label set which includes Star Wars 1983 and empire strikes back 1984. I would like to have copies with the OBI strip of Star Wars 1983 and Empire Strikes Back 1984 but my copies are so perfect and without any rot, perfect dustjacket without any foxing or mold i am very happy with them as is.

I now have 3 copies of Return of the Jedi just to have a non rotted copy with perfect unblemished dustjacket and OBI.

The 1986 trilogy pan and scan all have blue labels. It is strange that there never was a red label return of the jedi to match the first 2 films from 1983 or 1984.

Crossing my fingers that when Empire and Star Wars arrive in the mail they have no laser rot.

Edit: I don’t recommend the 1986 pressing of Return of the Jedi from Japan. After buying 3 copies 2 out of 3 are rotters. catalog number SF098-1100 avoid at all costs.

I think Last Crusade is the worst Indiana Jones film. Henry Jones Sr is portrayed as a buffoon in between being this great professor and a man of intellect. The film is so mixed up in if it wants to be a parody of Indiana Jones, the shock and suspense scenes are laughable there is no tension. Unlike Temple of Doom there is no real peril or feeling that something bad could happen to Indiana. Rather than elevating the material everything was made juvenile. Honestly i doubt i will ever watch the movie again.

Highest quality version of 1997 Special Editions? Is there a DVD release?
Time

There was a Digibeta for Star Wars 1997 Special Edition released years ago but not officially.

It was horribly compressed with digital artifacts and DNR. There also were dropouts that had to be patched with what i assume is the TB version.

Now that there is a 35mm scan a Digibeta source is a waste of time. At the time some considered the Digibeta better than the Laserdisc.

There also was allegedly a digibeta of Empire 1997 but i don’t think it was released.

The original Marvel Star Wars series
Time

I liked the first Dark Empire. The second one was okay. Empire’s end was garbage.

I loved the Original Marvel Star Wars, and Marvel Indiana Jones. I recommend them highly. Well except those issues about the bugs at the very end before cancellation for Star Wars.

I like the issue called the Last Jedi it has nothing to do with the Disney movie of the same name, i also like Crimson Forever. The Empire Strikes Back adaptation and Return of the Jedi adaptations.

The issues with Lumiya and Luke with two lightsabers. And the Eight for aduba-3 comic which is issue 8 of Marvel Star Wars.

Gold Standard Collection #2: Akira: The Complete Experience (WIP)
Time

The 4K had wider color gamut and increased dynamic range. But the drawback was of course the DVNR. They had to do a qtec restoration just couldn’t leave well enough alone. The same thing was done to Ghost in the Shell.

In some scenes there is clearly more detail in others the DVNR has smeared the detail away.

I’ve been seeing this a lot lately in 4K releases. The desire to degrain films. Reminds me of the bad early days of Blu-Ray.
