Anyone else think Empire Strikes Back's Special Edition is actually better than the Theatrical Cut?
Time

The windows added made it look more sci-fi and like a space station and not a soundstage, i’m fine with those. The Wampa shot is crap and removes the tension from that scene. The cgi in general isn’t better than the original model photography just like Star Wars Special Edition.

The Jango Fett Boba Fett and Revenge of the Sith Emperor being added in 2005 are all garbage. At least the 97 is Wingreen and Clive Revill.

Did G. Lucas ever intend to portray the Jedi as a flawed institution in the prequels? Or was it added later in the EU?
Time

The corruption of Palpatine’s predecessor was a lie to get him elected Chancellor and he tricked Padme into elevating him to such a position. Then he tricked Jar Jar into giving him emergency powers which he never intended to expire. Tricked the Jedi into a frame up of a treasonous coup to overthrow him with the help of Anakin. Just so he could wipe them out.

The prequel Jedi were really dumb, almost like the Spaceballs quote, evil will always triumph because good is dumb.

They keep doing dumb things like accepting the Clone Army, training with them becoming their military commanders when Palpatine was the leader of both sides of the war and had the same clone army created.

AND they keep saying the Dark Side clouds everything as they continue to do stupid stuff just because the plot requires it.

I have to revisit the original Marvel Star Wars i haven’t read them since i bought the A Long Time Ago, volumes. Sadly they never finished the series. Return of the Jedi adaptation with the original colors wasn’t reprinted. The rest were faithful to the original print with facsimile colors by Digital Chameleon.

I think Marvel did another printing which is also “remastered” and isn’t the original colors. I have to see if the hardback volumes are the original in the complete Marvel years.

addendum:
Decided to get the Hardback reprinting of ROTJ comics adaptation just to see if its the original non recolored dark horse, or Disney versions. I wasn’t able to find any samples online beyond some youtube videos.

If it is indeed a facsimile of the original then i can consider my along time ago volumes and this printing complete the original run of comics in my collection, which i can read other than the comics themselves which are on newsprint and i don’t want to damage them.

I was able to affordably get the Complete Marvel Years volume 2 and 3. The first volume, volume 1, the one i really want is out of print. That one has every comic from Star Wars #1 and up til the end of the Empire Strikes Back adaptation. But its also going for for hundreds of dollars now not the 90 bucks it was going for. These are really nice hardback printings. But they are not reprinted at full size, for every book in the Omnibus.

Edit: finally got complete Marvel Years volume 3. This book is huge and impressive. And Jedi is indeed the original colors. The Cover gallery is disappointing though, no full page reproductions in a gallery style. I forgot how cool Lumiya’s first appearance was.

Introducing my nephew to the franchise
Time

I did the same thing years and years ago. He liked the prequels more than the original films, and now its the opposite since he has grown up. He also is extremely opinionated and thinks the Last Jedi was the worst movie ever made because of what they did to Luke. Quite a turn to be honest since he liked Hayden Anakin and now Luke is his favorite and the unaltered OT.

My niece on the other hand really likes the Disney trilogy. And Rey. Really likes Mando and Baby Yoda, and Clone Wars and Ahsoka. She doesn’t really care about Luke, Han or Leia or any other Boomer characters. I explained its Gen X not boomer.

My sister’s husband, and her kids recovered from Covid. That is the only good news i’ve had all year, other than my brother and sister in law getting their vaccines. And my nephew turning 21 on April 1.
As my fathers elder sister passed away, its good to have something positive or praiseworthy to be thankful for. I have 3 nephews and 3 nieces and i’m grateful for their good health.
Also my mother has been in and out of the hospital and hasn’t gotten the virus.

I agree on the generations of fans thing. My dad introduced me to Star Trek and Star Wars.

I introduced my nephew to Star Wars and James Bond, and Studio Ghibli. To Samurai movies and Japanese cinema. He loves Evangelion and Godzilla. My sister introduced my nieces to Disney Star Wars. The younger one is even more crazy about Star Wars than i am. I explained to them i like the OLD stuff before Disney and the prequels and they basically said i’m a fuddy duddy and a stick in the mud.

My niece loves Jar Jar, Ewoks and any BB-8 and any other thing that people seem to dislike about these movies. I still joke with my nephew over his fear of the blue elephant guy from Return of the Jedi, Max Rebo. He was afraid of him when he was little.

I’m also a fan of all those franchises mentioned by canofhumdingers except Harry Potter. I’d add in Gi Joe, Transformers, Voltron, and He-man. Though i haven’t collected those since i was a kid. I also amassed a collection of matchbox cars in the boxes. Collected Sports Cards and non Sports cards. And every video game system from the Atari 2600 up til Xbox 360 and Playstation 4. Except for Sega Saturn, or Mega drive, or Neo Geo.

I always wondered if my Grandma owning and operating a flea market and me having had all the star wars toys made up until before the release of Return of the Jedi, had anything to do with the collecting bug.

We used to go to ames to buy the transformers in the box and go to the comic shops, my grandma seemed to think there was going to be value in these as an investment. I’m not sure she was correct. Only certain collectibles end up being worth something.

I like it. Would love to be able to own the Blu-Ray. I’d buy it as soon as it was available, the same for Clone Wars season 7 or the Lego Holiday Special, or the Original Original Trilogy.

I like physical releases and even digital ones i can own. Free of a subscription service.

I like the sequel movies as well even if i wish Luke and Leia had more to do and more screen time. I’m happy i got 25 years of Luke as the hero in the EU, and the passing of the torch to Rey was well done. Maybe it wasn’t George Lucas intention but i’m okay with that.

I like both aspects of Luke in Mando and Last Jedi. It shows that he is a character of depth he can be heroic and he can also be reflective and more spiritual. I adored the novelization of the last jedi it was great.

Star Trek: The Original Series preservation (a WIP)
Time

Where resolution is concerned i think 2K is the sweet spot they’ve decided on for Star Trek television and 4K for the films. Although only the Kelvin films and Wrath of Khan have 4k masters, and Deep Space Nine And Voyager haven’t been scanned in 2k yet. Enterprise is close enough with 1080P filmout tapes.

I cannot see them going back and doing TOS again in 4K.

Has anyone listened to the analog audio off the US discs yet, analog audio can be quite good.

I’m tempted to get some of the episodes on Laserdisc just to listen to them.

I have no idea. My Star Wars was the original versions of the Star Wars trilogy, plus the EU pre Phantom Menace. I’m a Gen X fan.
I like the original characters and that original world and wanted it to continue. It never did beyond Return of the Jedi. Lucas was obsessed with the idea of the prequels to the point Luke was never revisited as a character.

The books i collected were all Post ROTJ Luke centric.

I think it was Anakin trying to prevent a vision from happening that led to Padme dying. We don’t know if she would have died otherwise. Skywalker’s and force visions are a bad combo, look at what Luke did twice by following a force vision, he went to Bespin got his hand cut off, tried to murder Ben Solo in his sleep created Kylo Ren.

I just got issues 1-10 of the UK Dark Horse comics magazine. It has Dark Empire 1-6, tales of the Jedi, Indiana Jones, Classic Star Wars. Oversized comic mag. The Al Williamson stuff is fantastic.

I still remember collecting those issues of Classic Star Wars, by far my favorite Star Wars anything except for the first 3 movies. Still have my Russ Cochrane publishing set. Its in Black and White, but it has the full size pages of the newspaper strips. Signed by Al and Archie who both have passed. I always wanted to meet Al and i sadly never got the chance.

There is something pure about the serialized adventures in those comics. You can tell Al was a big fan of movie serials.

Rank The Indiana Jones Films
Time

I hope the 4K of Raiders fixes things. The Blu Ray is horrible. The color balance shifts the entire movie, there is a dnr push which was obviously automated. Indiana Jones has a sunburnt orange skintone. Satipo in the beginning head morphs for no apparent reason. Everything looks murky and blurry. Worse quality control than the deliberate creative decision 2004 Star Wars DVD set.

Unpopular Opinion Thread

Some of them are really dumb like Obi Wan’s teacher not being Yoda. And Leia’s mom dying before she was a little girl on Alderaan.

Other ones can be chalked up to Obi Wan lying or exaggerating or not remembering things. Like saying he never owned a droid, or that Anakin wanted Luke to have the saber when he was old enough. Or that Anakin was a great starpilot and a cunning warrior and a good friend. What was he supposed to do tell him yeah i cut off all your dad’s limbs when he went to the dark side and he is Darth Vader by the way, and your dad also killed your mom and used this saber to cut down a bunch of younglings. I’m sure Luke would have been up to joining Obi Wan on an adventure then.
