What Do YOU Think Star Wars Should Do Next?
Time

Disney clearly isn’t the problem when Alien Romulus and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes prove they can successfully and even respectfully handle franchises once held by FOX.

They were handed a golden opportunity and a great IP on a silver platter for 4 billion with Star Wars. It’s all LucasFilm, the direction of Star Wars is run by Lucasfilm.

If Star Wars is good credit Kathleen Kennedy, if it is bad criticize.

I’m fine with comics and animation if they can keep the quality up. They need to refine live action and only make good shows or movies, not just content to fill a slot in either their theatrical slate or streaming. Too much of something too fast, is too much. They are lucky if half of it is middle tier quality. Never mind they have canceled half of what was planned. The brand was already watered down by the prequels, Disney has pumped the Star Wars well pretty much dry. And have no plans to slow down anytime soon.

Those people feel exactly the same way about the other side. What you mean by “alt right” is unclear, since the term get’s thrown around a lot, but I think it’s important to recognize that people on all sides feel the same way. There’s been a significant shift to the left in mainstream media in the last decade or two, and people who aren’t on board with it often react by going in the other direction.

I don’t know what JadedSkywalker said before that this message is replying to as he deleted it, but I agree a lot with this reply. Political polarization is very big in the United States, and many times the far-left radicalizes people to the far-right, and vice-versa.

I myself was rather infamously far-left back in 2020/2021, harbouring extremely negative views on gender roles, Britain, sex, ect., but have since stabilized to around centre-right and hold far more nuanced and even positive views on said topics. I genuinely can’t look at those 2020-1 posts because of how cringe-worthy they are now for 2024 me.

Nuance is dead in politics, and yet is the magic word for political ideological harmony.

I could go on about where I think this all comes from, but the site rules do not allow political debate, so I will end this little mini-essay here.

I just got really angry with rage bait fandom menace grifters, i almost went off on them again today. But I had to calm down. The entire space of youtube is infected with their garbage, even if Disney Star Wars sucks, I’m sick of getting recommended their videos that are only meant to constantly keep people keyed up and angry, so they earn money. They provide nothing of value it’s like cable news or something. Freakin algorithm, if they made videos about stuff they liked or were positive about they wouldn’t get nearly as many clicks.

It’s a negative cycle that began with the prequels maybe I should quit Star Wars fandom altogether. I find that highly unlikely though, as little space it takes up in my life now vs when I was in my 20s.

For good mental health and harmony, I should quit Star Wars, but I don’t think I can.

I’d be down for the 1997 cuts and Phantom Menace in their theatrical presentations. But only after the original trilogy was released. Which will never happen because Mr Lucas hates them. He wouldn’t have gone off on a tangent at Cannes if he had any intention on relenting.

Edit: it’s not crazy that Lucasfilm making new tv and films made the EU non canon, it’s crazy Lucasfilm pretended that was canon to begin with just to make money off of fans. If George made his sequels they would have been thrown out, and they basically destroyed the EU by overwriting it with Filoni Clone Wars anyway and not following the lore. George didn’t think he was beholden to it and according to Dave told him none of it was canon.

Movie and TV show review thread
Time

I’m trying to get back into Star Trek, and going from the excellent remaster of TOS and TNG to the other legacy series is jarring to say the least. Enterprise is ultra grainy Super35mm with upscaled effects, its barely passable because no attempt at remastering was done. And Voyager and Deep Space Nine are even worse. The Laserdiscs look the best, the DVD second best which I don’t have, and streaming which I do is the worst of the bunch. Sub DVD is putting it mildly, who in this age wants VHS quality video for a modern show.

Discovery looks great even though its just 2k presented on a Blu-Ray or streaming. Picard looks good and its not 4K either, only Strange New Worlds was rendered and shot in 4K. At least the new shows look fine, but they leave 3 shows in terrible quality.

Release the original theatrical Star Wars 1977 on the 50th anniversary, that is all I’m interested in now.

Other than sitting down and fully digesting Andor.

Maybe one of the movies in production might be decent for a couple hours of fun? it would be unfair to just say no without seeing a trailer at least, but I’m pretty checked out on Disney Star Wars. I have no attachment to the Disney timeline or canon or expanded universe.

The Old EU won’t be continued, I might be intrigued if they made new comics or novels in the old canon. Do I trust Disney, doubtful.

I want to give the High Republic books a chance but it’s pretty hard to ignore the Acolyte. Kind of like how the world of the sequel trilogy didn’t interest me enough to want to read a bunch of comics and books for a world I didn’t understand and characters I felt no attachment to. Luke Skywalker I did understand Pre-Disney, he was my window or Avatar into the Star Wars world.

Is 4k worth the upgrade???
Time

It depends on the movie and the effort and expense they go through to get a good 4K UHD disc out there. A lot of time despite a major upgrade you still have to contend with revisionism in color timing, no original audio or DNR.

My problem with the format is the menus stink, lack of original audio, and bonus features are usually left off its just the movie.

It also depends on if the Atmos new mixes but I still want original audio.

Looking for 35MM scans of Ghibli's Castle In The Sky, Nausiica and Porco Rosso
Time

The Gkids is the new scan from the negative with the grain management and better color definition, yes. and Its a larger encode. Its master was from the Japanese Miyazaki box. Shout Factory is indeed the publisher of that. Their discs are for the most part more affordable than Disney ever was if you don’t go for the steelbooks.

She even has a different accent at the start. Leia is an all-timer

Didn’t she have a British accent like Padme did in Episode 1 which was dropped, lol. Well a fake one anyway.

All men in the Skywalker family have been a bunch of whiners in the movies. starting with Luke, continuing with Anakin, and then Kylo/Ben and Luke again. You can’t just single out Hayden version of Anakin.

Looking for 35MM scans of Ghibli's Castle In The Sky, Nausiica and Porco Rosso
Time

No, I don’t believe so the best release is the Blu-Ray disc. Other than say the amount of DNR on Totoro these haven’t been botched like Castle of Cagliostro was. Even the newer grain managed Nausicaa isn’t awful, and it does look better than the untouched original which does look more like a film print with the amount of grain present.

I wonder if they decide to do new 4K UHD discs now that Boy and the Heron is on 4K.

I think Kiki’s Delivery Service English audio track needs a redo at least, the one on the Gkids is awful. Somehow the original laserdisc, VHS and DVD weren’t messed up sound wise. And I’m not talking about changing the American dub songs or cutting most of Phil Hartman’s lines which I also hate.

I’m quite happy with the Blu-rays for the most part, but the only one they’ve redone with a fresh scan was Nausicaa. By this point all the others are ancient transfers. There are only some if I had the power I would see restored, Like My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service. Kiki probably doesn’t need it though, Totoro does it looks worse than the version that used to air on HDTV which had more film grain. Which I don’t have a capture of, wish I did.

Do any of the pre digital Ghibli still exist on film like in their original 35mm print, whether a Japanese print or foreign version? Like does Warriors of the Wind exist as a full 35mm feature and not just a VHS. We don’t even have a scan of the trailer in HD.

New Republic Omnibus vol 2 (Thrawn Trilogy comics + Dark Empire series + Boba Fett)
Time

I have it, it was delayed so many times and I paid a hundred bucks for it. I wanted the Thrawn adaptation and Dark Empire in one hardback. It’s a no brainer. Can’t comment on the quality of the reprint yet my copy arrived in sealed condition and I put it on my bookshelf. I’m worried I will damage it, I might buy the digital version just so I won’t handle it.

It’s very heavy the delivery driver was like what’s in this box, lol.

Time

They actually don’t look that bad on an old crt, but they do look terrible on any HD or 16:9 set made in the last couple decades. I actually sort of thought ROTJ was quite acceptable in PAL upscaled on my Samsung 4K set. for DVD I mean and nothing else the format has its limitations. DVD is overly compressed on picture and audio, it was a format of convenience.

I really would love to see the Japanese Laserdisc preservation of the From Star Wars to Jedi The Making of a Saga documentary that was included in the 1995 Japanese Star Wars Trilogy Collector’s Set Laserdisc set.

Would you be interested in From Star Wars to Jedi from the French Pyramid laserdisc release? Althor did capture and release that.

Yes, I would actually like that or any of the Pyramid captures, without having to download a torrent that is over a hundred gigs in size as the laserdisc archive is.

A '<strong>Rumour and News</strong>' thread for reported new Star Wars films and tv series
Time

I want to know more on that Mangold project, I will say I’m curious, but I need to see a plot summary and trailer. Is it pointless to have Jedi and Sith earlier in the timeline after Acolyte? You have Jedi and Sith all over the place and in everything it waters the brand down, no? I mean in terms of live action the EU and cartoons can do it all the time, but with 1-6 it was a special limited case of telling a story revolving around only certain characters. It was a part of the plot but it wasn’t the thing, the story was about the Skywalker family. It’s a very superficial reading of Star Wars which is what you expect when a corporation buys something and makes content.

Then aren’t interested in story they are interested in cycles and quotas and the only agenda they have is corporate.

Which Pre-Prequels Anakin you imagined and think would suit the best the Pre-PT Star Wars Universe?
Time

He should match the descriptions of Obi-Wan in the original trilogy, it still irritates me that whole he was a good friend and the best starpilot, and a great warrior when we get none of that in the prequel. We get none of his zeal for going on damn fool idealistic crusades with Kenobi, or his desire to use power to bring about order in a chaotic universe. We never get to see a slow seduction to evil, a betrayal of the Jedi, or even him hunting down and destroying the Jedi Knights.

I have this entire alternate trilogy I imagined as a kid that doesn’t exist.

He might even have been boastful and arrogant like Jorus from the expanded universe before he became Vader, headstrong. I get the feeling he would have always set his mind on something and believed he was right even if he went against the grain like Qui-Gon. Like joining the wars when Owen was against it. But what were the Clone Wars about, certainly not as shown in Attack of the Clones. Was it supposed to be a war against cloners and Mandos.

He obviously started out as Ben’s apprentice and wasn’t a respected General to later in the wars. When did he become the face of the war and the person who the republic counted on to win, their ace. Somewhere along the way he would have befriended maybe even helped Palpatine, I wouldn’t even be against the idea of him saving him from a kidnapping plot just different from Revenge of the Sith. When did Palpatine become like a spiritual and political adviser to him, when did he start to distrust Kenobi and the Jedi.

Special Editions - Improvement to Film or Changing History?
Time

The featurette on the laserdisc is very poor and doesn’t explain the changes well at all. As far as making of or behind the scenes material goes its poor as hell. I think Anatomy of a Dewback is better. I don’t have the Cinefex or American cinematographer special edition material, or ILM Into the Digital realm.

An in depth look at the Special Edition and the why probably never will happen, as it was rushed and sloppily done to r&d the prequel. And somehow George got Fox to pay for it with the excuse of the 20th Anniversary of Star Wars.

On the featurette McCallum says if we don’t do this, we will never have the film to release again, but isn’t that what happened with the original being lost. They didn’t restore the movie its left in an unrestored state even now. The Special Edition isn’t the film.

Star Wars novels and comics review thread

I preordered the Hardcover reprint in Omnibus for the Zahn comic trilogy adaptation and the Dark Empire trilogy in one volume. Its monstrous in size and was over a hundred dollars. But it’s been delayed so many damn times I don’t mind paying 140 after shipping and tax. 1312 pages. These are my all-time favorite series from Dark Horse except for Splinter of the Mind’s Eye or Shadows of the Empire. Can’t wait to update this with a review. It’s out July 3rd.

Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects

There is a site. I found out about it on youtube, selling 4K discs of 4k77, 4k80 and 4k83. Not going to link. It seriously is bad for the community for people to do this. The Blu-Ray boots were bad enough but offering 4K and not just 4K but HDR copies as well, awful.

Edit: it’s not through youtube obviously it’s a webstore that sells bootlegs. They even call these despecialized when they are 4k versions of the 4k77, 4k80 and 4k83. And Harmy isn’t the one who did those they can’t even get basic facts right.

I definitely saw this video. I tried to leave a polite comment on it to explain why he shouldn’t be promoting or endorsing the selling of fan restorations (and to point out the difference between the Despecialized and 4KXX versions). It was instantly deleted by the user… so he obviously knows what he’s doing is wrong.

Yeah he admits in the video to buying an illegal advance 4K bootleg which is perfect quality for a Godzilla Minus One. The store linked is literally pre-selling a bootleg of the Acolyte. I had hoped he was just a fan taken in by an unscrupulous person, but they clearly don’t care.

And to make matters worse that bootlegger I mentioned before from Europe who was kicked off of Ebay is back again under a new name selling all 3 4K projects on blu.

This other store, which is way worse is US based.

I wish something could be done to stop this piracy it hurts our community.

I’d message Williarob but he is probably aware of it.

The Arrow Video / Shout factory un-official preservation thread.

A dark universe is a terrible idea that Tom Cruise Mummy from Kurtzman is literally one of the very worst films I have ever seen. I only liked the actress in that Sofia Boutella. The Brendan Fraser Indiana Jones Clones were better, in that I mean film 1 and 2 and but no they weren’t horror or gothic. Some of the cgi hasn’t aged well but I liked Rachel Weisz.
