So, I am interested in how these discs were created. I am planning on delving into the Blu-ray creation side of things. I am assuming NJVC isn’t re-encoding the files, so how is he authoring these discs without losing quality? I have found very little on replacing M2TS files in Blu-rays created using Encore. If this is the method, how exactly did he go about doing that?

Hi Jackpumpkinhead,

I wish I could help you out. As far as actual manipulation of digital media files, my skills are fairly amateur. In fact, that’s one of the reasons I posted the guide to getting and burning the NJVC sets in the first place. It took a while for me to decipher it all, and once I did, and was able to share the files, I figured I could help streamline the process for others like me who might find it difficult.

I don’t actually know NJVC or anyone else on this site aside from what they write in posts and PMs. I’ve also not had any collaborative hand in any of the amazing video restoration, editing, or re-authoring that is happening here, so I have very little information on how it was actually done.

I’m just helping to pass out copies. 😃

You might try posting on NJVC’s thread, or messaging him yourself.

Or there are also several other members here who seem like they are pretty versed in disc authoring techniques.

If you peruse the “How-To’s and Technical Discussions” section of the site, you’ll see several names that pop up a lot. You might also try posting on one of their threads and/or PM’ing them. Someone will surely be willing and able to help.

By the way, one another note, your box set design is just about the perfect template for what I’m putting together. I’m planning on re-building my own from scratch, but I’m mimicking almost all of your design elements, only tweaking a few things here and there for personal taste.

And your guide to outer box construction has already helped tremendously in constructing my own.

If I ever get around to posting pictures, files, and/or how-tos for my set, I plan on sending a lot of credit your way. So thank you for your work!

Best of luck finding the help you’re seeking!

Thanks for the prompt reply. I’ll check with NJVC and see what he says.

Also, thanks for the shout out. But honestly I just mixed and matched a lot of the other sets out there to my liking.

But I am glad I was able to help. If you need anything as far as graphics help or otherwise, let me know, and I’ll do my best to help out.

So, as one point in my “fix list” I have “fix Yoda’s face”. I think most of us agree that it was great to see the little puppet, but I’ve seen many say that there was something off about his look, which I agree with. I think it’s mostly due to the mouth which looks a bit different. So for my edit I’ll try to overlay and animate the correct Yoda mouth. Here’s a simple test image (original left, fixed right):

When you end up finishing these scenes, do you plan on releasing them for others to use (crosses fingers)

What does It look to CG for? Assistance? guidance?

These are questions we may never find the answers to.

MKV TO ISO - FILE SIZE INCREASE.???
Time

I know this is an old thread, but I have recently run into this same problem trying to author and burn an AVCHD. I used meGUI with a presets for AVCHD and a file size limit for DVD-9 the encoded MKV was around 7.9gb. After running the MKV through tsMuxer the resulting folders were .5% over the amount the disc would hold. Obviously I need to set the size limit to something else, but what? I like the quality meGUI produces (even though it takes forever to encode) and the simplicity of the program, thus I haven’t used multiAVCHD. Is there any way to estimate the final AVCHD folder file size after encoding to MKV?

Oh boy, as soon as I saw the app I knew there would be a Solo fanedit that put Harrison Ford’s face in the movie. A lo’ and behold https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEADJocGzX4 - A side note, shame Anthony Ingruber wasn’t cast

Yeah, wow! I am really looking forward to seeing what the rest of the trailer looks like. If it is good enough, hopefully someone does this for the whole movie. I am really bothered by this new guy

Help Wanted: Making a PERFECT Crawl
Time

Sir Ridley said:

Illustrator is probably not a bad idea once you know how to format everything. I did it inside After Effects just so I could tilt and edit the text on top of the real crawl and line everything up.

So, specifics. My text is in a separate 4K composition where I do all the movement (excluding gate weave, getting to that later) and fading of the text. Apparently my focal length is 50mm. Don’t know how I ended up with that number, but it works. Although I have to stretch the text layer about 200%. Maybe 23mm and no stretch works just as well, but this is what I ended up with. 36mm film. Aperture 25,5.

The angle is -79,8 (for matching the TFA crawl). Since this composition is where I edit the text I also keep a guideline layer to see how wide the paragraphs should be. And on the text layer I have a bunch of effects. A yellow Glow, to make the text a tiny bit thicker. And then a Refine Hard Matte which makes it a bit thicker again and smudges out some details when it goes blurry in the distance. And then a 0,5% Camera Lens Blur which doesn’t do much. And then a Set Matte which adds that little gradient fade in the distance of the text. A Simple Choker which makes the edges a bit less soft and more contrasty. A soft red Drop Shadow which makes the edges of the text warm and cozy. And finally a Fast Blur that just softens everything a bit. Now, all this may sound like nitpicking (and it is), but have a look at this with/without effects image and you can see it’s not completely pointless: https://i.imgur.com/SvKgO9O.jpg

And then on to the composition where I put everything together. I scale down the text layer to 50%. And then for the gate weave I put a Transform effect on the layer (you could use the built in Transform property, but this way it’s easy to turn on or off). Alt-click the stopwatch for Position and type in the expression: wiggle(6,0.5). This gives the text a slight jittery motion. Aaaand that’s it. Sprinkle some film grain on top if you want.

I thought it was Fake News Gothic.

It’s real. The News, the Gothic. All of it.

Well…this is helpful! What version of after effects did you use? Also I was under the impression you also added a chromatic abrasion, and lense distortion effect to the crawl as well? Ive been tweaking the project I made in blender to mimic Adys crawl, (but his is also more of the PT style) and also give it that OT feel as well. But this helps to see your exact method. I may try and apply some of these principles to my project just so I can make a template that is more universal and accessible to the community.

Idea: Fixing Luke in <em><strong>THE LAST JEDI</strong></em>

To make this change work you have to replace Ankin’s saber with Luke’s throughout TFA and TLJ.

No you don’t. Why would you?

If the whole idea is that Luke’s legend as a Jedi grew in the years after ROTJ, most people would be familiar with his green lightsaber anyway (he’s had that for 3 decades compared to a couple years with the blue one), so it makes more sense (to me) for his projection to use his green one rather than Anakin’s blue one.

In TFA and TLJ, his blue lightsaber represents the lost myth of Luke Skywalker and the Jedi that they need to find and bring back.

At the end of TFA and the beginning of TLJ, Rey offers Luke the lightsaber, in essence asking for his help to come back and save the galaxy. Luke refuses by walking away. Later, when Rey says that she’s going to go to Ben and Luke says don’t, she offers the saber once again, and he says no. So she has no choice but to got to Ben.

During the course of Rey and Ben’s interaction, she gives him the saber (albeit in a non-traditional way). She thinks he’s the person who will save the galaxy. But when she learns he wants to destroy the Resistance still, she tries to take the saber back. She can’t it breaks in two, and it seems she’s stuck, hopeless.

But then Luke shows up! He’s finally accepted Rey’s offer, he’s come back to face down the First Order and save the Resistance. So what lightsaber should he be using? The one Rey offered him.

At the end, Luke is dead and Rey is left with the broken saber. She asks Leia, despairing, “how can we build a rebellion from this?” Leia takes her hand that’s holding the saber and says “We have everything we need.” The clear implication: they’ll rebuild the rebellion, obviously, but also the Jedi and (potentially) the saber too.

I understand and agree thematically, but for me personally, I really wanted to see Luke ole greenie. It also gives away the surprise that it is just a projection. We saw the ANH saber destroyed (and so did Kylo). I am planning on not just color changing the blue to green, but am experimenting with replacing the hilt as well. Hopefully i can get it to look good enough to use for edits.

Why not stitch together the two scenes before and after they call Maz into one? I wish I had the script, but there should be enough there to show they need a specific codebreaker, and if you cut canto bight entirely, you don’t need to explain why they need to go there.

Finn: "No one can get in there, they scramble the shields code every hour."
Poe: “I think I know someone.”

Cut to Finn and Rose leaving on the shuttle. That’s all you need.

It’s all about the dialogue. I recall him just lifting his head up and then we cut to maz but if he says “I think I know someone” then you can cut straight from there to the radar blip and then you see them pick up Poe’s call on the ship that they found a code breaker. And then you have the scene of him stealing from the ship after that before they arrive at the supremacy. You could also cut down them sneaking around (iron joke, evil BB-8, jokes).

Good thinking Handman, I think that’s the best way I’ve heard yet to cut down Canto Bight.

You’re right about it being all about the dialogue, and unfortunately the dialogue isn’t there. Poe never says, “I think I know someone”. He just looks up and points at Finn. You may be able to lift some audio from another Oscar Isaac film though.

The scene I’m most hoping to remove from the film is Maz’s video game cutscene. It raises unhelpful questions, it’s extremely cartoony (or video gamey), and contributes to the uneven tone of the movie.
I’m not sure how it’d be done, due to the plot direction it contains. But that was the worst scene in the film.

The whole time I am involved in fan editing this movie, whether I end up doing an edit myself or just contributing here, I’m going to hear Kylo Ren berating me.
“You’re still HOLDING ON.”

yeah, i was thinking about this last night and how it would be possible. I think the only thing you can do is trim it heavily because, unfortunately, there is a lot of exposition that is needed to explain why they are going to canto bight and why they are looking for a code breaker with a “red palm bloom(?)”

As far as PDFs of this set, because of my unique way of making this box, if I were to give out the PDFs I’m not sure you guys would make much sense of it.

I understand if you’d rather not share your finished project.

Even so, there are many of us on this site that love to tinker with designs.

Might you consider posting links to or directions on where to find the assets? The cover art images, logo pngs, and the font style/size used, for example?

And by the way, thanks for your “Work in Progress” guide on making custom boxes. I’m certain it will prove to be a big help.

The only saber ignition sound that I noticed was Luke’s on Crait and I was okay with it because it wasn’t even real.

For TFA, the sound was usually different from the other films, though consistent with itself. Odd. I just saw TLJ a third time and I just don’t remember the saber stuff well enough. I would recommend editing out ignition sounds that are distinct from how that saber sounded in. ROTS, ANH, ESB, or TFA. Especially sounds that are closely associated with other sabers. Exception being Crait, since if all other cases are correct, it’d just be another clue about what’s is going on.

From what I remember, I think the saber ignition sound in TFA is incorrect, at least when Finn first lights it up. The same sound is made in TLJ I believe.

On a side note, I think I might try and do a 3D replacement for Luke’s lightsaber at the end. To me it just doesn’t make any sense that his blue one would be the one he would project. I mean he hand built the green one and had it a lot longer than he had the blue. I may do some mock ups just to see if I can pull it off.
