As a direct answer to OP, it depends on the film.

I was born in 1999 so I didn’t get to see TPM when it first came out, though I did go see it when the re-released it in 3D and actually got very exited to see the OT 3D and re-release it in theaters. I don’t think I’ve ever been more disappointed in my life. The main point I’m trying to get across here is that I saw all 3 prequel films in theaters as a kid/early teen and the have a certain level of nostalgia for me. That being said they don’t hold up very well.

TPM to me has always been empty popcorn junk for me. I can sit down and watch the film and not be too terribly bored until they get to Coruscant. Then the movie REALLY slows the f*ck down to the point that it’s actually unbearable. Then picks back up when they finally go back to Naboo. Kiddie Darth Vader always bothered me and Jar-Jar Binks is downright insulting but I find it to be at least watchable. The pod-race is fun and interesting (at least the original version, good god did they butcher the pod-race in the DVD and Blu-Ray).

AOTC is completely insufferable. It’s actually worse than seeing blood in your urine. There is not a single thing to latch onto throughout the whole movie dude. ALL of the characters are terrible, all the dialogue is forced and terrible, the plot is convoluted and it’s just boring to sit through. I feel like I’m torturing myself every time I watch it. I pray to God every time I see it that the government will kidnap me and waterboard me just so I can get my mind off of that stupid movie. It’s that bad.

ROTS is a mixed bag for me. On one hand I really enjoy seeing the Emperor “subtly” (big air quotes on that one) manipulating Anakin. The first 20-30 minutes of that film are awesome. The middle act gets a little shaky and starts to fall apart, but it still kind of works. The last hour/hour and a half of that movie just slip right back into mediocrity. The ending of that movie is awkward, forced and contrived. The entire Obi-Wan Anakin duel is overblown and it feels like I’m watching George Lucas jerk off his digital animators, and the Yoda Emperor duel is so goofy, awkward, terrible kiddie garbage in an otherwise decent dark toned movie about a “good”-guy that turns bad. And don’t get me started on the “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”. Jesus Christ the end of that movie gives me a brain aneurysm.

You don’t need a blu-ray burner. All you need is a DVD burner and some Dual-layered DVDs to get your hands on high quality versons of the DE’s/SSE’s. The AVC-HD versions on TUIG (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yLsvexWBVM8IYSGopKuSfsGk5YIgCwQWd23bqb5ryD4/pub) and do the multi-part rar download. If you have good internet speeds then it will download in like an hour or two, if not then it might take 3-4 hours. Then all you need is something like ImgBurn and burn it to the Dual-layered DVDs. If you’re really that desperate why not take a day to figure that out with the help of an extensive guide and a community more than willing to help you along the way. The AVC-HD versions are perfect for Dual-layered DVDs because they’re only 8-9 Gigabytes. Why wait for 5-10 days to get it in the mail for 200$ or even 50$ when you can do it for the price of some dual-layered DVDs and take just a few hours of your day. Seems perfectly acceptable to me.

Some tv’s (Look up your specific model online.) can even play video files off a usb stick. Just convert the mkv to whatever format your tv accepts with Handbrake and just plug in the usb stick, thats the method I used for awhile and am still using until I can find some blank Blu-ray discs.

Dude my TV is like 10 years old. It’s something like a 50 inch 720p-1080i Panasonic. It’s about the size of a gigantic tube TV. The main reason I use it has almost no input lag which makes it perfect for gaming. Not only that but the amount of picture settings it has for playing fullscreen tapes/DVDs, 4:3 letterboxed laserdiscs and widescreen VHS tapes makes it perfect for my needs and I haven’t found a new model TV with half the picture settings of it. Not to go off on a tangent but sorry no USB 4 me…

I guess modern Television manufacturers only account people doing some lite gaming and watching DVDs and Blu-rays. 😕

I only recently got rid of my 13 year old Panasonic 42" PWD6 monitor (with a massive 852x480 resolution) - no usb, hdmi, dvi, no speakers, not even a built-in tv tuner - just a couple of ‘panels’ (scart and rca) and a vga input…

To get around it’s limited connections… I bought a HDMI to vga adapter for £5 - and connected it to a £30 chromecast which streamed near on anything with no hassle from the pc to the tv 😃

May be an option for you mate?

 

(the ‘chromecast audio’ is a superb option for old hifi systems with an ‘aux in’ too…)

Exactly! What I did is I burned the AVC-HD to a dual-layered dvd and replaced the dvd versions of the 2013 blu-ray dvd combo set I got at a used shop for like 20$ and I just put the cover of the 2011 blu-ray OT box set I got back in the day because I prefer the artwork on that set and that is plenty to tide me over until I can get into something like MySpleen to get these kickass things with menus and bonus features galore. It only took me like 6 hours to figure everything out and it only took me an hour or two to download each film and it took 20 minutes to figure out how to burn them to a disc.

Or let it go overnight or even a few nights…everyone (or so it seems) wants things instantly these days and can’t be bothered putting in some time and effort to actually obtain things that are so worth the time anyway. It actually took me something like 3 weeks to get all the files for these custom BDs and I am still yet to get onto sourcing a burner, discs and printer to print all the covers and whatnot but what is a few weeks to the many years I’ve been denied the experience of watching the theatrical versions on my TV / home cinema in a decent resolution and having it sit nicely on a shelf when not watching?

Amen to that my dude. but I’m just talking in terms of the “barebones” AVC-HD versions. If you want the best possible versions it definitely will take you a while to make labels and add menus bonus features etc. But I see where you’re coming from, we live in the era of instant gratification.

yeah it’s fucking bullshit because I’ve been reporting these sets for almost a week religiously and ebay has been doing nothing. I was asking questions on all of his listings linking TUIG and saying something to the effect of “You do realize you can get this set free” and he would keep taking down and relisting. He’s been selling those things left and right. I’ve been reporting them every time I notice a new listing. Ebay is doing nothing and it’s really pissing me off.

Report it mate - report them all.

Or ask the seller questions like ‘do you realise you can get these for free by looking around a little?’ so it will appear in his ‘questions box’ near the bottom of the page…

I’ve been doing both of the above religiously for several days and nothing has happened. The seller just made wise-ass comments and so I told him to fuck off.

I made a thread on despecialized edition piracy on the collecting and memorabilia thread hoping to get more people to report this seller. Please excuse my language man but things like that really #trigger me.

I have no clue if there’s a thread on this subject or not but I am steaming. There are people on ebay selling copies of the despecialized editions and I’ve tried everything in the book to get ebay to stop letting this seller exploit desperate fans and sell this fan created content like he has a right to profit from it but the original creators/Lucasfilm don’t get a cent. People like this make me sick!

The difference between the two is that the '92-'93 VHS widescreen set doesn’t have the DNR motion smearing of the '95 THX (or “faces” versions as you call them). The '95 THX versions are sharper, have nicer sound, and more vibrant colors. The only downside is that the color grading is a little bit too on the '97 Special Edition side for me but IMO it’s better than the faded colors of the '92-'93 set. Both are recommended if you can get your hands on them cheap.

When you find a listing for this set on ebay for over 100$

Word of advice, go to Ebay and search Star Wars (A New Hope/Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi) 2006 DVD Fullscreen. What sucks is that the packaging doesn’t look as cool as the gold ones but if you want to find the bonus DVDs cheap, that would be your best bet. Lurk around till you find them for around 15-30 dollars each. I got the 2006 widescreen set for the Christmas of '07 and when I was a kid I got the fullscreen version of Empire but the disc inside was widescreen. I’ve never heard anything about those sets coming with the wrong discs but I’m going to hold onto it because it HAS to be rare. But anyways I had to re-order Empire because my xbox 360 ate my bonus disc so I looked for the Fullscreen versions because the widescreen ones were going for WAY TOO MUCH GOD DAMNED MONEY! I got my hands on a replacement bonus dvd for 15 USD free shipping. Best of luck my dude.
