One fear I have about the backlash against TLJ is that Lucasfilm might pull a WB/DC move and make overly reactionary decisions to “fix” things for IX and beyond instead of building on what worked. That was the major problem with both Suicide Squad and Justice League - instead of letting them both run their course and tweaking things from there on out, they made massive changes to both of them throughout production to respond to the criticisms of MoS, BvS, and SS (in the case of JL), resulting in the messy tonal whiplash of SS and the Frankenstein’s mosnter that was JL. I don’t want either of those things to happen with IX.

And before anyone claims that’s what happened with TLJ, it isn’t. TLJ was written and in (pre?) production before TFA even came out. If it was reactionary toward TFA, that was due to Johnson’s response to Abrams’ and Kasdan’s choices in VII, not the audience’s.

Considering the glowing critical reception and box office success, I doubt they’ll let a set of particularly loud fanboys change how they work.

Applying that logic, they are OT “fanboys” and you’re a TLJ “fanboy”?

Or maybe we could just leave the name calling out of it. As has been repeatedly stressed by mods in here - argue the point, don’t attack the person simply stating their opinion.

I don’t consider fanboy an insult. Just a descriptor. A small subset of diehards fans isn’t going to sway the direction of a series that caters to the widest audience of fans of anything out there, anywhere, these days.

DominicCobb said:
I don’t know what it is, maybe I’m tired of all the time I spent defending TFA, but I honestly don’t even think I can bother with trying to respond to a lot of these negative reviews. Maybe it’s the volume, maybe I’m just shocked that there’s even such an outcry to begin with. Our takes on the film are just so different that I honestly don’t know how to bridge that gap, besides just hoping these people see the movie again and get out of it what I, and many others, did. It’s really something.

I’ve also been meaning to ask you for a bit about the above post earlier in this thread - why do you feel the need to defend TLJ by replying to every negative review? Is this not a “review and opinions” thread? I’m for civil discourse on varying opinions as much as the next reasonable person but your position seems to be that you feel obligated to actively fend off negative reviews of this movie, sometimes to the extent of really getting in people’s faces and almost aggressively singling them out when they’re just contributing their point of view to the thread.

I usually find your posts to be pretty good around here Dom but in this thread I’ve seen another side of you that isn’t very pretty.

.Val

Look at my posts and look at how many negative reviews there’ve been. It’s not even close. I respond here and there when I find a complaint particularly egregious or think I can actually reason with someone and show them why I disagree in hopes of possibly swaying their take. For the most part I just ignore, for the reasons I stated in the post you quoted - because for the most part some of the complaints are simply beyond my comprehension.

Also, I don’t know why you feel the need to signal me out. I’m far from the only one defending the film. I won’t lie that I’ve had little to do at work the last couple days which has left me looking for a way to past the time, but I hope I don’t seem aggressive in my rebuttals - unless, of course, someone is being misogynistic or disrespectful to people with mental handicaps. I don’t really know what you mean about seeing another side of me, honestly, unless it’s in regard to that.

Also, if the mods decide to ban me, just know that I don’t take back anything I said when I was calling people out for their backwards bullshit. I’m sorry if I won’t let that stand. If the admin team feels fine with keeping toxic shit in while banning people who speak out against it, I don’t see why I should be visiting this site anyway. If the mods don’t ban me, nice. Let’s try to clean this up.

I’m going to use the personal vitriol aimed at me as an example. Oojason took issue with the way I worded a few things in one of my posts around page 30. Admittedly I responded a bit immaturely, but I edited my post addressing his criticism (and I felt like it wasn’t too big a deal, again, I responded kind of immaturely and I get I was being a little insensitive). I come home from work and hop on here to see 4-5 people calling me an asshole and such. I apologized a few pages later after coming home. I don’t mean to single you out, but can we please keep the personal attacks out of this please? You have no idea how disheartening it is to just want to talk about a movie to have several people dog-pile you over wording something poorly.

So I’ve just plunged into the British Brigade of Bad@$$ery known as the New Wave of British Heavy metal and I just listened to Grim Reaper’s Fear No Evil for the first time and I must say it F@#$KING rules!

The cover art features a skeleton riding a motorcycle through a stained glass window and it’s every bit as awesome as it sounds, I’d post a picture if I knew how.

Whereas Saxon are clearly inspired by Led Zeppelin, and Witchfinder General is pure Black Sabbath, Grim Reaper is pure Judas Priest (my personal favourite band of all time).

Lightning fast lead work, drums that punch through the mix like Howitzer fire, Steve Grimmett’s vocals are like an air-raid siren, and bass that’s inaudible. Absolutely excellent low-fi 80’s metal. HIGHLY recommended.

Besides the low production value it was so dull and short, what was this for exactly?

As far as I can tell, it’s just an innocuous saturday morning cartoon made for children kind of in the vain of Ewoks or Droids. I don’t get a lot of the outrage over it myself. I think it’s fine. If I was like 7 I’d probably love it, as I did with the '03 Clone Wars back in the day.

I watched it this morning, I disagree with some of his points but for the most part he knocked it out of the park.

@Hal9000
I agree 100%. When I saw the books on the Falcon, I thought I was just seeing things until my girlfriend said “wait, Yoda just said she didn’t need the what was in those books. He said that she had everything she needed.” or something to that effect.

And why didn’t the one chick that Leia was having a lesbian relationship with tell Poe about their plan to evacuate everyone off of the ship? If they did that then Poe wouldn’t have sent Finn and fat asian chick to get captured and have their plan discovered.

‘and fat Asian chick’ has a name - if you can’t be bothered to learn what it is - then it could likely give the impression you didn’t think too much about your post there. Think twice about using that as a description for another person on this site too.

Same for the ‘one chick that Leia was having a lesbian relationship with’.

Okay? I was unaware that describing someone by their race, gender and body size is bad?

Ok cool. So you are terrible on purpose.

I’m not discriminating on that basis nor was I using the description in a derogatory manor, It was a general description.

Edit: When the police ask for a description of a person, is it racist/sexist to say their race, gender, how tall they were, what they were wearing? I’m sorry the character had little impact on me and I couldn’t remember her name.

“couldn’t be bothered to learn what her name is”
I wish the movie bothered to make me care.
Rose’s defining characteristics - has a dead sister, doesn’t like animal abuse. Real memorable.

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

I have yet to read through this thread but I just came home from seeing The Last Jedi and I must say, I’m unimpressed. Now before anyone says that I’m just bhing just to bh (censored for the thought police, only kidding mods), I LOVED The Force Awakens. Yes, you can say that Rey is kind of a Mary Sue, and yes, you can say that the plot was kind of ripped beat for beat from Star Wars (or as a**holes call it, A New Hope) and you can even say that the movie had no climax. When I heard Harrison Ford was returning, I expected him to die. He stated years ago in an old interview that the only way he’d return to the galaxy far, far away is if they killed Han Solo. Beyond that, what’s the climax? Blowing up a third Death Star? Setting all that nit-picking bullst aside, it was a fun, well paced movie with MASTERFULLY done directing. All of the above issues lie completely in the script. The actors really flesh out what are under-written characters with great, charismatic performances.

The same cannot be said for The Last Jedi however. If you like the movie, I’m not s**ting on you for liking it. I kind of like The Phantom Menace and LOVE Revenge of the Sith. So I know how it feels to be constantly berated for liking something the majority of people don’t. That’s not what this is. I felt like Rogue One was a disorganized mess but I was willing to cut Disney a bit of slack because they were experimenting with something outside the main series. With the formalities out of the way, let’s get into this…

So the movie opens up with Rey finding Luke, and instantly something’s not right. So Luke leaves clues for the Resistance to find him when he’s needed most while he goes in search of the first Jedi Temple, but then when Rey get’s there he says “what you think I came here for that Temple? I came here to die.” Like what the f**k?

Next we learn that one fighter can take out all the gun turrets on a First Order flagship even though it’s been established that there are HUNDREDS of gun turrets of ships like these all along the ships to PREVENT something like this? Okay… Then we are expected to believe that the MOST POWERFUL force user we have ever seen can link two people’s minds across the whole galaxy, but can’t sense a light-saber moving directly to the left of him? He can throw people across the room without lifting a finger, but he can’t sense that Kylo is going to betray him with Rey? What really pisses me off about this is the WASTED potential with that character. We see this IMMENSE power this guy has and he’s killed in like 10 minutes of screen time. Like what the F**K! All this mystery surrounding this character, and for NOTHING.

Now we get to Luke, you mean to tell me that the guy who risked his life to redeem the second most evil man in the galaxy because he felt there was a glimmer of good left in him and refused to kill him because he was FAMILY, was going to kill his nephew because he had some dark side tendencies? FK you man. Luke had dark side tendencies in Return of the Jedi, and he was going to KILL the kid of his SISTER and his BEST FRIEND? Jesus H. Dicks, they royally FKED Luke’s character in this one. And why did he make himself a ghost thing at the end? If he was going to die, why wouldn’t he just show up in person? He could have lifted his X-Wing out of the water and there could have been a nice homage to Empire there. This whole movie was just wasted potential.

And what the hell was up with the whole Finn sub-plot? The whole movie takes us to this place that feels like it was lifted right out of the prequels with these goofy a** CGI abominations everywhere and a fat opera singer lady and st. It was so distracting. And why didn’t the one purple haired lady who takes command of the ship tell Poe about their plan to evacuate everyone off of the ship? If they did that then Poe wouldn’t have sent Finn and Rose to get captured and have their plan discovered. God what stty writing. If the fighters are able to get through the shields then why did they call off all the fighters? The fighters could have slowly but surely crippled the ship and destroyed it.

Do I even need to mention Leia Supermaning through space? Do I need to mention Finn sacrificing himself and being a hero just to have asian chick stop him last minute? Why didn’t the Gorilla-AT-ATs shoot the two of them?

I’m just scratching the surface here folks, I never would have guessed that something this sloppy could have made it into the mainline series. Disney really dropped the ball as far as I’m concerned.

JEDIT: I’m a fairly new membet and censoring my profanity lead to weird formatting issues in my post but I’m leaving it as is out of pride and because I’m not a revisionist. Sorry about that.
I also didn’t mention how inconsistent the tone is throughout the film. You have all this cringe inducing, low brow humor and cutesy crap while it tries to go for a darker tone, a lot like Revenge of the Sith actually. And all the plot points that were just abandoned in The Force Awakens. Like what happened to the Knights of Wren?

One thing I thought was kind of clever was that all the mystery surrounding Rey’s parents is just like “Yeah sorry, your parents were crack heads who sold you for drugs”. I felt like that was pretty good with subverting audience expectations, but I would have liked it if she, maybe GREW as a person a little bit. But whatever. Sorry folks, not a fan of The Last Jedi.

I’d legitimately like to understand what “busy being poor” means and how that precludes someone from learning other languages.

Go and ask a 19-year-old who has worked for food for over 10 years by scavenging junk and other crap in a town of less than 1000 people here on Earth and get ready to be surprised that they don’t know how to turn even a computer on let alone read or write or speak perfect grammar of their own language.

I want more realism in my children’s fantasy films!

I know, I’m just talking in terms of what Harmy was using in his video a while back comparing footage between version 3.0 that he’s working on. The footage he was showing based off the Grindhouse had issues.

So I don’t know like you but I all I see is selling illegal copies of copyrighted material

Hi *** entertainment

The Force is strong with this one…

This isn’t my first encounter with them I have got in a comment war with ***

Here’s how I’ve always argued this with people. Let’s say Harmy is your room-mate, he has a car and you don’t. He let’s you borrow his car when he isn’t out with his friends, his girl, working or whatever and his only stipulation is that you refill the gas tank before you bring it back. If you don’t refill the tank, and he get’s pissed at you and doesn’t let you use his car, who is in the wrong? If he asks that you don’t buy or sell his fan-edit/restoration, and he gets pissed off enough, he may just keep his future efforts to himself and never release them to the public. And you only have yourself to blame. Moral of my inebriated ranting? Don’t piss people off who give you free s**t.

Need help making Despecialized Edition DVDs - MKVs

From what I have learned with the Xbox one that Avchd files burned to duel layer discs do not work with the Xbox one you will need a blu ray burner just download ConvertXtoHD and stick the iso file and go into settings and turn letter box to stretch hit convert it will take a while then it will finish then buy some blank blu ray discs and open up imgburn hit burn files to disc go into documents folders and it will be titled what the avchd file was called then hit burn it will take about 30 minutes and stick it into your Xbox one and boom the original version of Star Wars in HD

Update November 2017 now they do work Xbox one just got a update so use imgburn and hit burn disc img to disc

I never tried it with dual-layered DVDs seeing as how I didn’t have any on hand at the time, but I burned the AVC-HD to a blank blu-ray and it worked like a charm in the ol’ xbone.

Jedit - Noticed your updated post

Just out of curiosity, did you happen to figure this out? Pretty much everything you’ve stated was all greek to me but I know there’s some DVD .iso’s of the '97 trilogy ripped from the LD with menus on the spleen if you’re just looking for the transfer. Though everything you just said does seem to be present on that rip I have, gray blacks, lots of noise, and lines on edges. Just curious as I’d like to clean up my rips as well.

[AUDIOPHILES UNITE!] Need help with audio cassette setup
Time

Don’t waste your money on the most high end dicks out there. As Doctor M stated above, cassettes don’t have the best quality. Even your “audiophile” decks will produce results of 128kbps, though if you’re like me and you listen to a lot of low-fidelity productions that were recorded in stoner’s garages, basements or shitty cheap recording studios in the 80’s then this is more than listenable. As someone who collects rare and obscure metal from the 80’s, let me be the first to tell you to always use a good Kenwood deck. You can still find them out in the wild for relatively cheap and in decent shape. I’ve never had a Kenwood eat my tapes. Hope this helps, good luck.

In what way I should watch a Star Wars Marathon?
Time

I’m gonna give this thread a bump. I never marathon through these movies, I just watch whatever the hell I feel like watching.

I would recommend machete order IF The Force Awakens didn’t exist. For me, the time gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, especially to a first-time viewer is jarring. I watch the Unaltered Original Trilogy first, then I spring for the 2002-2005 Clone Wars 2D animated series, both DVDs back-to-back. Then watch Episode 3. Whether it be the “original” version, the extended cut on the Spleen, a fan edit (the best one is hands down Labyrinth of Evil V4.2, but I digress) I feel like you can skip out on the embarrassing mess that is Episode 2. The time gab between Episodes 1&2 is so big, that the characters are entirely different people by the second movie, but the second movie is so bad it’s only enjoyable if your completely inebriated. Episode 3 has Return of the Jedi highs, and Attack of the Clones lows. If you’re wanting more, watch a few episodes of the 2008 CGI Clone Wars show just to space the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy even more. Then move onto The Force Awakens. Sorry for the wall of text.

Dremaster, your work is F**KING beautiful. I almost can’t believe this is from the Grindhouse. I also love the colors. I genuinely think this is the most accurate source in terms of color, at least with Luke on the tauntaun. I have an old copy of From Star Wars to Jedi on tape and given the far inferior picture quality, I think this version (with the exception of the flickering colors) is the most accurate. Again, outstanding work. I really cannot fathom what kind of technical wizardry you must have performed on this to get it to look this good, slight DNR issues and flickering colors be damned.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 - controversy thoughts?

I just hope Disney pulls the plug on EA’s Star Wars license in the future. I’d love to see a new KOTOR from BioWare (or a new RPG from CD Projekt Red).

I’ve lost what little hope I had for a KotOR 3. Even with EA owning Bioware, having exclusive rights to the Star Wars license, KotOR being made available on Xbone and KotOR 2 having a massive update a year or two ago on steam. Setting aside that the game series is over a decade old and it’s no longer considered “canon”, what really made me lose hope was EA shutting down Visceral because of the “linear single player” Star Wars game they were developing. I still had hope. After seeing Deus Ex get a sequel after over a decade I had hope for KotOR, but no longer. It’s a shame because it is one of the finest role-playing experiences out there along with Ultima Underground, The Elder Scrolls chapter 2: Daggerfall and Baldur’s Gate.
