EU books: A funny Lucas contradiction

No, Adam, it is not. It is part of the Star Wars universe, yes, but it is NOT canon. Not G-canon anyway. (is that the right term?)

And the fact that I have to watch 4 hours of the Clone Wars cartoon and read 6 or 7 books just to UNDERSTAND what the hell is going on in the story is pathetic.
I'm sure they are enjoyable entertainment, but I am not going to waste my time with something that should have been explained in the PT films. I've never had this kind of problem with the OT.

You see, that is the problem right there. I don't subscribe to the EU (and most people are in the same boat as me). The fact that the EU has to explain what we should have understood in the films is a disgrace.

Now I'm not knocking EU. The EU is there to explore further into issues that have already been established. Like, we know Luke builds a new lightsaber, we saw it in ROTJ, but if you are curious as to HOW he built it, well that is what the EU is there for. Or if you are curious as to what happens to the whole gang after the Battle of Endor, there again you have the EU to satisfy your little heart's curiosity.

To have the EU explain something so questionable, such as "why the hell does Leia remember her mother and Luke doesn't" is insulting. I am not going to read some pulp fiction book by some no-name author and his interpritation of why something so profound occured. It should have been established in the films.

The EU is not there to tie up George Lucas's loose ends. It is there to provide more detail into subjects that have already been established in the films.

Also I was watching OCP beautiful ANH fan edit and during the commentary (I believe it was David Prowse) said that "I liked all the changes that George did to the movie, except the Jabba the Hutt scene. It was totally redundant and it upsets the flow of the movie. We learn everything that we need to know in the Greedo scene. I wouldn't have put that scene in. But George wanted it put in there."

ROTS a kind of AOTC 2.0?
Time
Also, and I just gotta say this one - If the PT was supposed to be about Anakin's past, don't you think that we should have seen more of him and Obi-Wan growing together?

I mean, Obi-Wan goes on about how "he was the best star pilot in the galaxy" - with I don't buy because we see him drag race as a 9 year old boy, and then we mostly see Obi-Wan flying in the other two movies than we see Anakin fly. Hell, even Padme flew her ship more than we saw Anakin fly anything of his. Obi-Wan comes off as a better pilot than Anakin (AOTC planetary rings, anyone?) All Anakin does is bitch for 3 movies.

He was a "cunning warrior." - He is? Since when? What did he do that was so cunning? I didn't see him come up with any brilliant military strategies. I saw him bitch about how Obi-Wan was holding him back. Does that count?

"And he was a good friend." - Really? Because for most of the PT Obi-Wan and Anakin saw very little of each other. Did they ever have any mission together? It seems more like they went to the same Univeristy and maybe had a couple of classes together, but it's not like they had lunch together everyday.

A friend of mine told me that she read somewhere that Lucas said it was a "bad idea" (or whatever he called it) to introduce the concept of Midichlorians. So that is why it is never said in AOTC. But then like the contradicting prick that he is, he brought up the idea of Midichlorians again in ROTS - which didn't do anything for the story.
I remember in the theater thinking, "Oh come on! Not this again! I thought we were past this. That midichlorians were a bad call on the TPM movie. God dammit...."

Lucas could just have easily used the word "Force" over the word "midichlorian" and it wouldn't have altered Palps speech.

"He was so strong that he could influence the force in such a way that he could even stop people from dieing."

Which would then make a little connection to Yoda from ROTJ when he says "Strong am I with the force...but not that strong." And make you wonder, "Hmm...was Pleagasis (or whatever the hell his name was) really that strong? Did he have this power?"

But Lucas is stupid so he kept the concept of Midichlorians even though he said he wouldn't. That lieing rat basterd.

Oh yeah well how's this for nerdy. The guy that plays the Rebel base general from ESB (one of his lines was "You're a good fighter Solo. I'd hate to loose you." Anyway, he plays a role in a Fawlty Towers episode (1970's BBC comedy) and darn it if I didn't shout out, "Hey! The general from Star Wars is Vacationing in England!"

And for those of you playing along at home, the name of the episode was "Waldorf Salad" where he plays a very rude American vacationing in England.

I wonder when they quoted him on that. Maybe it was Pre-1999 or something.

Vader is a much more complicated character coming from the OT. "Wait, he's evil...but can't bring himself to kill his son? He is devoted to the dark side, yet... he would risk himself to save Luke? Yet he is ruthless and killed all those people. How can he be good?"

The PT just makes him out to be a angsty pussy for 3 films. There ain't nothin' complicated 'bout that. "Wait, he's bitching because his girlfriend can't love him and he's mad at Obi-Wan ... for some reason. Something about holding him back. Back from what? His a good guy yet...boy he turned to the dark side really quick there didn't he. He ain't deep. He's just stupid."

I didn't say it made sense. I just said it was cool to see. This is Lucas we are talking about. Sense? Pffftt. Come on, what is that?

I don't remember how the movie went, but if you read the ATOC book it makes a whole lot more sense, minus the Syfodyas part. Even in the book he can't be explained properly.

But all the love and politcal crap makes a hell of a lot more sense in the book. I've seen the movie a couple of times. I've read the book twice as much. Book 's much better.

To be fair, I didn't know it was his son when I saw the movie. I only found out like a week ago. I though that the scene was pretty bad ass. I like that kid. Even if it wasn't his son, that scene should still be in the movie IMO. It shows that the Jedi weren't just bending over and taking it in the ass when it came to the extermination. He kills off 2 troopers before he is shot dead.

Lucas child or not, I still think that scene is cool. I was impressed with that character.

Oh my God! You do that too?!! My favorite track to listen to is on my ROTJ CD and is track 12, the bonus music of "The Forest Battle." I will listen to that over and over again in my car, to and from class. I pretend that I'm right there flying my X-Wing. (For some strange Reason I'm always teamed up with Wedge... Proabably because I know Luke is on the Death Star.) It's a good thing its all back farm roads when I drive because traffic might get scared.

Oh and when you try the sync-up, it actually works perfectly. I was surprised too because for 8 years I just had my own images of what that music was to. Then I actually looked at what it said - "Alternate Binary Sunset: John Williams wrote the music but Lucas wanted to go in a different direction so he wrote the music differently." I was shocked. How could I miss this? So I linked it up and viola! It worked!

Hmm...if there is any chance that a DL disk will screw up I better not get that. My cheap player probably couldn't play it anyway. Switching the disks shouldn't be that big of a deal for me. I can get my lazy ass out of my chair and change the disk. Hell, that's the way I grew up with the LaserDiscs, and then I had to switch them twice!

Quick info before you make a wrong decision:
If you decide to get the DL disc as two SL discs, then changing discs in your player won't work. For the movie to play, all the files must be on the same disc, so you either make yourself a DL disc using the files from the 2 SL discs you get, or ask someone to send you an already made DL disc, or simply get the SL version of the movie.

I'm sorry, I don't understand. I thought that OCP was going to give us two normal disks because the movie wouldn't fit on one disk. So somewhere in the middle of the movie the film will end and I'll have to put in the second disk and resume watching the film, just like I do with my father's laserdiscs.

I don't have any equipment to change anything I get from OCP so what I get is what I get. It has to be ready to play in some format before I get it, because once it gets to me - it's stuck in whatever format it came in.

You'll also know that all 3 of George Lucas's children are in Reveng of the Sith.

His eldest is with Bail Organa in the huge hallway as part of the greeting party for Obi-Wan and Anakin.

His second daughter has speaking lines, and is the fat blue thing during the Alliance meetings at Padme's place.

His son is the young Jedi on the landing platform that Bail is on that takes out a few Clone troopers before he is shot in the chest.

(And that all of his Kids were in the other two movies too. Again, a few with speaking lines.)

On a PT note, there is only one place that gives me goose bumps (sad that in the course of 6.5 hours of movie, that is the only place).

Anyway it is in ROTS where Yoda is fighting the Emperor. They are dueling on his platform and Yoda steps on the button that makes the platform rise into the senate chamber. You see it rising up from the floor with the whole empty senate chamber growing around them and you see fierce lightsaber fighting on this tiny little platform dwarfed by this huge symbol of democracy.

The symbolism is amazing in that scene. Very good work with the camera angles and music. To see the last battle for fighting for Republic justice. I couldn't have picked a more appropriate place for that battle. It is the only scene in the entire PT that I like.

Yeah, I have that CD, and it's a pretty cool track. I would try that myself by watching the video, but I'm too lazy to find exactly where it would fit.

If you mean you don't know how to link it up, it's a peice of cake. Get to the part where Owen is about to say "That's what I'm afraid of." The Binary Sunset music starts right about there. Now, for the alternate Binary Sunset music, it starts in the exact same spot. It runs the whole sequence just like the regular binary sunset music does. Just put on your head phones, put in your ANH copy and then press play at the same time. It'll line right up.

Questions about AOTC
Time
1) Why does the Vice Roy want Senator Amidalla dead? - she opposes the military act, which would put him out of buisness if the military creation act goes down

2) What does Master Siphodias have to do with the clones and what was his role in the whole scheme of things? (Is he ever mentioned again in another part of the SW saga?) - I wish I knew. George Lucas really failed at that plot line. Big time.

3) I thought Padme was against building the army of the Republic? So why did Palpatine persuade Jar Jar to introduce the motion to give the Chancellor all the power in front of those other Senators? - He manipulated Jar Jar. Jar Jar thought he was acting in Naboo's best interest (even though he had been working closely with Padme for years. You think he would know better...)

Have you ever heard the alternate version for the Binary Sunset? It's neat. I've got it on my 2 CD set of the Special Edition soundtrack and it has a more creepy tone to it. Instead of it being like "Looking to the future for hope and adventure" it's more like "The empire is out there and no good will come to us."

It really cool. I put in my ANH tape, brought it to the right scene and then played the soundtrack through my speakers and pressed play simultaneously. It was cool to look at. And since it comes right after Owen's "that's what I'm afraid of" comment about Luke having too much of his father in him, and knowing what we know about Luke's father that scene with the alternate music is damn cool. Not better, but cool it see anyway.

Yeah, I know you do.

But back on topic:

You're a real deep fan when you can spot characters out of their normal character. Such as:

Jeremy Bulloch played Boba Fett, but he also played this Emperial guy too!
http://www.wattographs.com/shop/artwork/JeremyBulloch03.jpg

And that the guy who plays Dak (Luke's gunner in ESB) is also the same person that play's this guy in the Imperial walker that is trying to blow up himself...apparently
http://massassi.yavin4.com/sw_img/d5hoth77.jpg

(I have a hard time believing the last one, but it says so in my Behind the Magic CD-Rom. Dak looks way younger than the officer in the walker. Maybe it was Janson. I donno. But what I do know for a fact is that the Imperial walker commander dude is also one of the gunners in the snowspeeders.)

And that it is none other than Mark Hamill himself that says "The first transport is away! The first transport is away!"
