Are you gonna buy 'em?
Time
I want to buy them because my burned bootleg copy is kind of iffy. I mean, it looks wonderful and I love it, but will start to skip and freeze on my player. I can always correct it by hitting the RR or FF button on my player for a split second which seems to "stablize" it for 15 minutes, but on other players it just freezes, and I shouldn't have to worry about it not working on other people's players.

With an official release I know it would work. Period. But I may be sacrificing quality for reliability. I just don't know. I'm tempted by the dark side and it seems that Lucas has just found out that the OOT is really my...twin sister.

George Lucas on the O-OT

I think he was more refering to the trilogy of Luke, Leia, and Han, as opposed to the trilogy of Anakin, Padme, and Obi-Wan. He was working on the PT during this time if you remember. He even mentioned it on the Faces Box set interview.

They did. The OT artwork below was done by the same artist, Drew Struzan, that did the Prequel posters.

No, no. I mean for this "Limited Edition" set that is coming out. Because it would have been awesome. But expensive.

Describe your history with Star Wars
Time
July 4th, 1993: I am 10 years old. My father asks if I have ever seen Star Wars before, and I say "No, it sucks." (I was thinking it was He-Man due to the Laserdisc cover). I went outside to play in the 96 degree weather just so I could avoid seeing that horrible movie. I get tired and hot and came back inside during the trash compactor scene. I fell in love at first sight. I kept asking questions about what is going on and my dad says "well you should have been here for the first part of the movie."

The next day I watched ESB and was a little confused (because I only saw the second half of ANH) but love it anyway. I wanted to know what happend to Han, but my dad did not own ROTJ an I insisted that we go rent it right then and now. I had to wait for the weekend. It still rocked though.

Flash forward about 4 years.

1997: As everyone knows this is when the SE came out. I was stoked and saw ESB and ROTJ twice in the theater (I was too late for ANH). Bought the soundtrack and played it non stop.

1998: Me and my 3 best friends whom all loved Star Wars make a spoof movie called "Spar Wars" and spent all summer basically being SW nerds. There was even one night when we all paraded down street branishing lightsabers and blasting the Star Wars soundtrack from my jambox.

1999: TPM comes out and me and my now remaining 2 best friends flip the fuck out and go see Episode I. We couldn't be more pleased with our life. We make another spoof movie called "The Franchise Menace." That was a lot of fun. We had elaborate costumes, saber fights, and the obligitory bad acting. I played Obi-Wan, my other friend played Maul, and my third friend played the Queen.
The movie basically end with the death of a chocolate chip cookie and a dance number.

Torn.... To buy, or not to buy.
Time
I'm bitterly disapointed that it won't me in anamorphic, but I only own a crappy little TV and have very little moneys to buy a nice widescreen TV. Hell, it could be a very long time before I get a new TV. And besides my OCP transfers are great, but it has a dendancy to freeze on other people's DVD players. But they are usually okay on mine.

So in the mean time, I think I'll buy them, but I did send my letter of disapointment to Jim Ward.

A draft that was beloved by everyone for 20 years? Sorry to burst your bubble, but the OOT has been out a hell of a lot longer than Lucas mind boggling "definitive" version.

How would you feel if the director for Gone With the Wind went back and altered the movie and gave Atlanta a much bigger burning scene, filled with huge explosions and balls of flame because the movie was only a 67 year old draft and the "technology" didn't exisist back then to make bigger burning scenes.

....Just like the technology to hire a younger actor for the end scene in ROTJ didn't exist in 1983 so Lucas had to put Hayden in there 2 years ago.

Make your voices heard! (again) - re the 2006 GOUT DVD being in letterbox format
Time
I just mailed this out today.
-----------------------------------------------------

Dear Sir:

It has come to my recent attention that the up and coming limited release of the original theatrical versions of the Star Wars trilogy is going to be presented in a non-anamorphic format.
To the untrained eye this might seem inconsequential, but by presenting the DVDs in only a letterbox format the fans are going be severely cheated. Home entertainment technology is spreading quickly and more and more viewers are abandoning their 4:3 television sets for a more universal widescreen set. Europe has already established the 16:9 ratio and America is catching up very quickly.
Fans around the country are going to notice the lower quality of this non-anamorphic DVD once they watch it on their 16:9 television set. Please don’t sacrifice the quality of this amazing and culturally influencing film by presenting it only in Letterbox. You’ve already warmed our hearts by giving us the chance to own the movies we saw as kids. Don’t abandon us now.

Sincerely,

(signed)

The Official 2006 Discs Will Be No Better Than What We Have!
Time
Wait? Boba Fett wasn't in Episode III? I guess that movie didn't leave as big an impact on me as Lucas would have hoped. Who was the cardboard cut out villin in that film? Some trade federation dude? God I haven't seen that movie in...well, exactly one year ago today.

And wait for the non-anamorphic rumor dust to settle before we start burning Lucas at the stake. But don't let your torches burn out either.

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM
Time
These are just rumors about the anamorphic. Granted, they have merret, but they are still unconfermed at the moment.

Strike 1 - forced purchase of the 2004 DVDs (and claiming our holy grail is a "bonus")
Strike 2 - crappy, rushed Photoshop jobs of the covers
Strike 3 - unconfermed anamorphic rumors?

We've got a lot of strikes against us, but I don't think it is out right sabotage...yet. Give the dust some time to settle, but don't put down that pen and paper yet.

It almost seems as if it would take MORE effort to make the movies non-anamorphic. I can't imagine the Lucas film guys going out of their way to do that. Lucas technically isn't the one pushing these out. It's the higher-ups and the crew that are pumping this out, and from what I've heard over the years, they are heavy into the originality of the originals.

Besides, they've washed the old versions. Why wash them, if they weren't going to use them? Like I said, when transfering to a digital source, it's automatically anamorphic. They would have to go and actively click the button that says "non-anamorphic" before transfering.

And most things today are anamorphic anyway. None of this makes sense, and I'm going to wait it out. Hell, I'm not even going to buy the DVDs right away. I'm gonna give them a month and read the reviews before I buy them. Just like I did in 2004. Saved me a cool $70 and my pride in what I believe Star Wars should be be presented in.

Obi-Wan Killed Your Father!
Time
I've thought about that too. We've all seen Star Wars a billion times and that revelation scene is no longer suprising to us. We say all the dialogue word for word and nothing shocks us like it did.

Unless the tables were turned and it WAS indeed Obi-Wan that murdered Luke's father. Then would try to figure out how Vader plays in all of this and who the hell Anakin Skywalker was.

I am teaching myself piano right now, but I'm still learning "Jesus Loves me" and "America, the Beautiful" and need much more practice.

I can, however, sing. I'm no Broadway performer, but I know how to hit a note....with a hammer.

And I have noticed that the female Sci-Fi fans don't fit the stereo type usually, but with the guys... Eh, it's hit or miss some times. Some are the ultimate embodyment of the space nerd, while others are fun, good looking guys. It can be a crap shoot sometimes.

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM
Time
I don't like the "updated" versions of the DVD cover art. Sure, I'm just bitching, but the photoshop job that they have for the cover art doesn't capture the true "classic" feel that their blueprints deliver. It feels....updated, loosing all of the original romantisism. (This is why I LOVE my Star Wars poster book. *hug*)

And you just gotta giggle at Luke's expression in the updated empire poster. He's looking as if he just saw his pet parakeet get blown up outside his window by an Ewok with an uzi.

But then again, that is just me.

And why is Chewbacca dry-humping C-3P0 in the ANH poster. It's almost as if the camera caught him in the middle of the act and now he doesn't know what the fuck.

I wish they had recreated the Gone with the Wind poster. I prefered the look of that one.

Oh that is a fantastic poster. I have an original print framed in my room. It is across from my bed so it is the last thing I see at night and the first thing I see in the morning. Ahhhh....
