The Holiday Special: Was it Anikian or Palpatine who....
Time
THREAD HIJACK!!

Since this thread is confusing, I'm going to go all terrorist on you and hijack this thread for my own stupid question.

A friend and I were talking about the battle strengths of various Star Wars characters, namely Luke, and how good of a Jedi he really was as compared to other previous Jedi that lived.
Then we began asking weirder and weirder questions and eventually asked the question, "So...how does Luke eventually bite the big one?" Not like we cared, but I'm sure it is written somewhere in some magical EU book or something about how he met his end, but now I am curious as to who "finalized" it.

I'm assuming some battle all Qui-Gonn style. Going out as an old 90 year old jedi rocking in his force chair just seems lame.

But then again. I have way too much time on my hands and I think crazy things.

$36 pre-order (AR) for all 3 titles...anyone found it cheaper??
Time
I agree. We may have to take it up the ass on this one. And we may have to love Star Wars than "ourselves" (i.e. our money). It's all babysteps, but we are essentually funding the preservation of these films. It shouldn't have to fall on us, but that's life.

If we want these movies to be in the best form of preservation for our children (but not for our children's children, because I don't believe children should be having sex) we are going to have to shell out extra money for it to happen.

Like I said, it's not fair, but this is war. And war isn't always fair. If we don't buy them we are sending Lucas the message that we don't want them. And then, nobody wins. I'm not happy with the situation (which is why we are voicing our displeasure via e-mail and letter), but I would be even more unhappy if there wasn't a hope that a better version might be on the horizon.

HOLD ON a second...
Time
How do we even know we are getting a Laserdisc transfer?
I thought I heard someone say that Lucasfilm found/cleaned up a reel or something and were going to use that to make these OOT DVDs?
Also, couldn't they just go back and use the cleaned up reel from 1993 instead of the Laserdisk Master Tape?

From what I recall, the "Faces" box set was farely good. Color was clean, the blacks were blacks, and all that sort. We are bitching pretty hard about it not be anamorphic [optimism] but I don't think it is going to be that bad. [/optimism]

Also, since these are as original as original can be, does that mean that we are getting the original credit scrolls as well? I don't know what it is, but I can just tell that the SE and the 2004 DVDs have this weird aura about them that makes the credit scrolls look...well, not original. I've never been able to put my finger on it, but you can tell that they now look "updated." That they were actually generated by a computer and not...hand made, or whatever they did back then.
I'm hoping for original scrolls here. Complete with reel wobble, grain and everything.

Cut scenes
Time
I was just thinking about that last night too.

There are always deleted scenes and some times hilarious outtakes with today's DVD movies. I would love to see deleted scenes from all 3 films (anchorhead scenes, the Jabba hanger scene - sans Jabba, the part where they do the autopsies on the Tauntauns, C-3PO taking the sticker off the door, the sandstorm on Tattoine).

Most of these we have never seen before, and for those who have the deleted magic CD-ROM we've only seen the anchorhead stuff. Which is gold by the way. But I want to see it in a non-crustified version.

Should Lucus make 4,5 and 6 over?
Time
I had a buddy in high school that loved Star Wars but also wanted to see what it would look like re-made. We almost weren't buddies anymore after that.

But a movie is a different medium than a book. Sure, they are both stories, but you can't just interchange actors for actors even if you play the movie scene by scene (Psycho I'm looking in your direction.) The actors and original shots are an entegral part of the story.

1976 the Star Wars book met with lackluster sales, but after the movie, the book was on the top 10.

Remaking classics is a horrible, horrible idea. Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Casablanca. Could you imagine those...remade? (And I don't meen "blackification" that was done with "The Wiz" or Family Guy' "Black to the Future." That is just plain sacrilige.)

Upcoming DVD covers
Time
I don't like the whole "Episode whatever" plastered on the cover. I don't want to be reminded that Lucas made 3 really crappy ones.

How the hell is is that Lucas made such a masterpeice that is "A New Hope" and yet when he directed his other 3 films they totally blowed? How did that happen? Because ANH is reguarded in the highest of light world 'round.

And back on the posters. The original poster look has that romantisism about it. Look at Vader in ESB. He's wearing some type of poncho thing blowing in the wind. There is action, adventure, intrigue in every corner of the poster. Luke, honorably gazing off in to some distant battle. Leia caught in the middle of danger.

The copied version? Ehh...not so much. Vader is (as someone so elequently put it) looming for that last doughnut on the confrence table. Lando is looking at you wondering what the hell that is on your face, and Luke can't believe that the Rebels left without him as he watches them fly away.

Massive scars? I never noticed.
Time
Okay, for someone as die hard as me, I've never been able to notice the "massive scars" that poor Mark Hamill had to live with after his car accident.

When my aunt first saw Empire Strikes Back, she made the comment "wait, that's not the same guy that played Luke in the first movie."
To me, I never noticed. And I've tried to see what other's are seeing.

But I'm no doctor and the plastic surgeons did a fantastic job of fixing up what Mark describes as "his face consisting of raspberry pie." I simply cannot see the alterations.

Well, maybe a wee bit in the nose area, but even then I don’t understand what it is I am seeing. I notice something is different, but it is so small that my brain just disregards it as an error and moves on.

What was changed? Not much apparently.
