I just compared my 'Hoosiers' Anamorphic & Non-Anamorphic DVD's
Time
Is there anyone out there that can share a screen cap of any anamorphic vs. same movie in non-anamorphic? A picture can speak a 1000 words here.

But your post brings a big weight off my shoulders. They weren't lying when they said "it's not anamorphic, but it's still pretty good."

Originally posted by: CO I'm sorry, but I just don't have the stuff on my computer to do this, and I hope I dont' lose credibility, cause I can understand anyone who is suspect of this post.

Come on, CO! It's you! Like we would doubt you.

I just watched that! I've only got like a 30 something TV but I thought it was pretty good. Better than laserdisc (which I also own).

What sends the better message to LFL?

I was thinking about that too. I've never really had a problem with watching my actual Laserdiscs. They were bought in like 1992 and my player isn't all that fantastic, but I've been able to live with it.

And since these are coming from the masters I guess we won't have those little prism lines all over the screen (sort of like digital dust). I'm not happy, but since this is the best we have so far (and I do stress the "so far" part) I'm willing to give to the cause.

I know, and that is the sad thing. I've heard from other people at other various boards, and personal friends of mine at the university that they ARE going to buy these DVDs (mostly because they held out in 2004 or have only bootlegs).

All or nothing is what we have to work with, and since so many people already (including myself) are planning to buy them it seems like the "nothing" option really isn't going to work (not with so many people getting this set).

It's like we are all on a SE boat and we need to go all Poseidon on it's ass. To the port side is the September release, to the starboard is the "do nothing" release. We can't tip this boat over if we evenly devide ourselves on deck. And since I see more people filing over to the port side railing, that is where I'm going to throw my weight too to tip this damn thing over.

EDIT: And yes, I also do plan on mailing back the SE disks that will come with this release. Just so I know for sure that Lucas has gotten at least one message that the OOT is all that I wanted. He loves those disks so much, well, he can have them.

That's kind of how I see it too. The only bad guy here really is Lucas.

People boycotting this DVD release (even though I understand why) is going to hurt us. We need to see these sales do extremely well. Amazingly well. And even though our complaints are logical and founded, how are we going to let Lucas really know that the OOT disks are the ones we want?

I've pre-ordered mine. I know that they aren't great, but I'm not buying them because "I need them." I have a bootlegged copy. I'm buying them in the hope (and the investment) that a HD disk will come out.

Sure the e-mail response lady said that "it will never happen." But so did people who said that the OOT would never be on DVD. And yet...it will be, in September.

My DVD purchase is an investment and with every investment there is a calculated risk. I'm willing to shell out $35 for the 3 movies, crap-vision or not. I'm not happy with the quality, but my money speaks louder than my letters. Who else but the OOT fans are going to buy this? So when that $$$ sound goes off another tally goes up for "who here wants the OOT on DVD?"

You people talk about "fuck it, Star Wars is dead to me" but it sound like you guys are giving too quickly. The road gets a little bumpy and now you want out. The Death Star takes out one of your command ships and now you wanna go home.

Well tough. Once a Star Wars fan, always a Star Wars fan. You give up now, and Lucas wins. We've come this far. We've gotten him to acknowledge us. Hell, he's even caved a little bit and is releasing a version.

But it's a crappy LD version. Why? Because he is afraid of us. Yes, us. The fans. He's afraid that if he does present a good version nobody will like his version and he will have failed himself as a human and a man. Oh boo-hoo.

Giving up is an acclamation of defeat. You don't like Star Wars anymore? Fine. There's the door. And don't let it hit you on the way out.

But if your a fan, a true fan, then join us. Here's your helmet and a nerf gun, with Lucas seeking missiles.

We have not yet begun to fight.

The Official Lucasfilm Response

Could there be some under the table work at Lucasfilm, in our favor?

Read this line again:
So many fans have requested the original movies, we wanted to find a way to bring them to you.
They had to find a way to give it to us. They couldn't just give it too us flat out (because Lucas forbids it), so they had to piggy back it on the SE DVDs.

But since these movies do not represent George's artistic vision, we could not put the extraordinary time and resources into this project as we did with the Special Editions.

Basically, "We would if we could, but Lucas is a prick so we can't."

They know we want it. That is why they are trying to get it out to us. But the enemy forces are hot on their shoulder and they can't very well give us what we want. I don't think Lucas will let them. So they are giving us these DVDs, promoting more of the "unaltered version" angle rather than "bonus, bonus, bonus."

I think the Lucasfilm workers are selling us the movies while George's emperial troops look on as the employees say, "Yes. Here are your DVDs, sir. *wink wink* They contain bonus material. *wink wink* It's not as good as the 2004 version... *gun cock noise*...the, er, definitive version, but I think you will have fun with this. Fun. *wink wink*"

This has now gone way beyond just giving the fans the old "fist up the ass." We are now talking about the criminal neglect of one of the most influencial and historically important films in cinema history. To hell with Lucas's "vision." To hell with profit margins and sales quota. To firey hell with it all.

This is about preservation of HISTORY, and Lucas is trying to bury it in light of his rewritten version. Our culture's most provocational film is in jeopardy and if we quiet our voices, these movies will die.

1997 & 2000 VHS Boxset Differences?

he he he

I didn't even think of that. On the box it make some comment about "15 years ago I set out, blah blah blah" and did some math. I guess it was like an '85 box set or something.

I still have that box set put away to keep me from completely wearing them out (they are already not so good looking) and use my LD transfer DVD's. Oh the memories.

My aunt wanted to watch ANH for the hell of it and put in that tape version instead of my Faces set. Holy hell was that image crappy. Not only was it pan and scan, but there were water marks on the film. WATER MARKS!! It was all washed out and graining. God it was horrible. I thought my VCR was going to vomit up little bits of Star Wars chunks at any moment it was so bad.

And I did watch A LOT of the SE box set as a young teeny. I saw in the the theaters and just went crazy. But even as a 15 year old, I knew that something wasn't right about the alterations. Such as the Luke line "You're lucky you don't taste very good." Where was it? I liked how cleaned up it looked and the "special footage" added, but something was missing.
Even my little brother noticed, and one day (back in 2002 when he was now 15) we wanted to watch ESB and he said "Let's watch the original version. Put in the laserdisc." I wanted to kiss him. Not in the way that Leia kissed her brother, but there you go.

New DVDs NOT 16x9
Time
You know, until episode I came out I thought that Lucas had directed all 3 OT films. Seriously. I never even occured to my little brain that someone other than Lucas could have directed these fantastic films. I was praising him and worshiping him for the directing work he "supposedly" did.

Had he not brought so much attention to his whoring self I would have continued to think that everything was his own. He then could have had someone else direct the films (like Speilberg this time since Lucas can apparently do whatever the living hell he wants now) and yet I would still have only identified with him.

Not only has he screwed us, he's screwed himself. Brought the ever glaring light on to his one flaw he felt was his weakest: Directing. And now it's quite obvious. The man sucks.

Actually that never bothered me when I had a 4:3 TV I preferred it that way to see more of the pic. But it is now annoying on my 56" Widescreen when I use the zoom to fill the screen on letterboxed movies and now have the subs cut off.

I know! God, I hate that! Do we know where the Jabba lines are going to be? Obviously in the theater they had to be on the screen.

"Smooth things over?" What the hell is that going to entail? A Lucasfilm Mickey Mouse hat with our names on it?

I don't mind grain. I don't mind mat-lines. I just don't want my movie to be pixilated when I blow it up on a projecter screen. Damn.

Cut scenes

Maybe when Lucas is dead there will be an ultimate 6 disk set of just the original original trilogy. Something like the Gone with the Wind set. 3 disk are our theatrical movie versions, and 3 other disks that are chalk-full of extra material, including all the delated scenes for each movie.

...It's the dream that keeps on dreaming.

Oh god. I didn't even think of that. What will the openning menu look like? The 2004 version was so cool, but as "bonus" material? Now I'm scared. Probably a pixilated image of Luke with a big shoddy button that says "Duh, Play Moovy".

I have always loved that picture of Luke that the artist used for that collage. I called it the "Bambi Eyes" photo, and I love it.
