We have to buy this set atleast to preserve it for the next generation of fans
Time
I'm hearing rumors that

a) Lucas took out the ROTJ Anakin floating head for the 2004 disk

and

b) Hayden has been digitally inserted and dubbed into Shaw's unmasking scene. (possibly for a 2007 release)

I only heard this through my cousin and the grape vine. Personally, I don't care either way. I'm getting the originals and am for the most part, pleased.

And as much as I hate the idea of Lucas replacing Shaw with Hayden, I am very curious as to how it would look. Not that I would ever accept the altered scene, but it would be neat to see what it would look and sound like, see how creeped out I would be with the change, and then shrug my shoulders and go "Huh, that was kind of weird. Whatever. *tosses out disk*"

Could Hayden be put in age make-up and pull off a non-creepy, heart breaking line of "Now, go my son. Leave me."? I actually want Lucas to do this so I can go, "Wow, huh. Yea...uh, no. Shaw was way better."

And that, my friend, is the dark lord of the sith in a nut shell.

I believe that there is a fan fiction that starts out like this, only involved Grand Moff Tarkin and Harry Potter.

I once I had sex with Darth Vader. And by "Darth Vader" I mean no one, and by "sex" I mean lunch.

No I don't think that the '07 will have the OOT on it. In fact, I guarentee it.

And no I don't think that a Lucas tribute is what I want on my DVD extra disk. I just said that to make a point that I won't be seeing this beloved box set until he is dead, ergo the tribute. (not like I'd ever watch that segment anyway.)

I'm still demanding that Star Wars get the proper treatment it so rightly deserves, but I'm tired of holding out. Sure this DVD release is no filet minion, but I'm hungry and am willing to have a little "snack" because Lord knows when dinner is coming...

I'm buying this DVD and I'm happy. Not ecstatic, but happy. I'm picturing a great release in the future. A nice shinny silver box complete with all three unaltered movies, original artwork, and a bonus material featuring making ofs, behind the scenes, all the deleted footage, old interviews, and a tribute to George Lucas (because, obviously he'll be dead).

That is my dream. This DVD set coming out in September? Well, it's the stuffed Teddy Bear I'm hugging while I dream of greater things.

I'm buying this DVD for selfish reasons.

I'm tired of watching my VHS, and my Laserdisc isn't the best of quality. Since these DVDs are being made from the LD master tapes and not the Laserdiscs themselves, this is going to be good quality.

I had no idea what the hell "anamorphic" was until this event, and had I bought the DVDs with out knowning, I would have NEVER known.

Bottom line: I want these. I have no guarentee that a better release will be out and I'm willing to settle for this quality. If a better version comes along, hells yeah I'll be buying it.

And none of us have seen the final product. We are all making judgment calls on half our info.

Lucasfilm lunch hour

I really don't know the inner psyche of Lucas, and I can't say that the divorced had nothing to do with this resentment towards the OOT.

I see it as, the man is a perfectionist. But he's human so he can never make or even come close to perfection, esspecially when it comes to his art. The man is like a plastic surgery addict. He keeps seeing flaws where there are none and ruins his once beautiful, ground breaking film.

I also believe that someday down the road we will get a decent DVD transfer. Hell, Blade Runner is finally getting the transfer it so desperatly needed. Once Lucas is dead, they'll release an ultimate edition. There are too many people out there, and who work for Lucasfilm that refuse to let the originals die. I believe that we will get an offical release someday. For now, these DVD will be the best quality so far, and to me it's worth the $36 fee.

Why I'm not so worried anymore

Oh man, don't even get me started about that! My dad rented it many, many years ago in...pan and scan. Dear lord was that a hard one to watch.

Wasn't Ben-Hur like the widest movie ever shot? They even had a special camera built just for one scene? Or was that Lawrence of Arabia? I donno.

Reguardless -- back to the vague topic. I'm not worried either about this release. At first I was, but now I'm getting giddy. Sure I'm disapointed, but I'm not fretting over the quality anymore. I'm just happy it's getting release. Because I have pure faith that this trilogy WILL see a quality print come about. I maybe old and gray, but I'll still be loving Star Wars.

The Reason the OOT was released

Yes, and no.

I own the 1993 Laserdiscs, and am still buy this DVD set. Why? Because the DVD format offers a sharper quality. It's from the same master, but the two are very different formats. You could easily say the same thing for taking the LD master and putting it to VHS print. It's the same master, but on two different mediums.

LD has what I like to call "digital dust." It's like hair, grain and dust on a projecter film, but it's usually white, or prisim colored. And it's on the whole screen, black bars included. (Really obvious on my ALIEN laserdisc)

Plus, I don't want to have to flip the disk over or put in the second disk anymore. I grew up on that for 10 years (not complaining). I think it is time to upgrade.

"We will then crush the rebellion with one swift stroke." *flip disk*
"Where are we? Open the presure matinance hatch at 426-3827!" *new disk*

"No, there is another." *new disk*

It was fun as a kid. My brother and I would start scooting towards the LD player at the beginning of the line and be there to change the disk right at the cut. Even today, still. (I just watched ANH with him like a couple of months ago.)

I just compared my 'Hoosiers' Anamorphic & Non-Anamorphic DVD's
Time
I still can't see the pictures. Even at the site. I must be cursed.

And this September release is going to be better than most of the LD rip bootlegs. Mostly because the DVDs that are coming out are from the Master. Where as the rips are second hand.

Master ---> DVD

Master ---> Laserdisc ---> rip ---> DVD-R

Any time there is a middle man you will always have image degregation. Bottom line; no mater how fantastic the Laserdiscs themselves were, DVD rips of those disks can only come out as good as what was on the LD previously.

As irritated as I am with Lucas's comeplete disreguard for cinema history, these DVDs will be the best quality version currently out there.
