The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread

Wow! There's a lot of activity going on in here today at The Ranch. That's good news! I can't believe we're already up to 12 pages on this thread! Thanks for all the comments, guys. Some really amazing ideas are flying around these pages.

This might work as long as we get an indication before Maul goes to Tatooine that Nute has an ace up his sleeve.

"Oh no!" says the flunky "Amidala's escaped!"

"No. She is never beyond my grasp."

"But if she should reach the Senate..."

"She will never see the Senate again."
Love this idea! Then Maul shows up in the landing scene, then reports back to Nute.

Ditto! This is a great idea, MTH! It tells the audience enough without so explicitly leading them from point A to point B.

Originally posted by DaystromX: A couple other ideas…
What if you reversed the scene where Amidala decides to go back to Naboo, and the scene where the Jedi are ordered to? This shouldn’t be too hard. Just cut Mace’s lines so they go like this (brackets indicate cut)…

Mace: Now is not the time for this. The Senate is voting on a new supreme chancellor [and Queen Amidala is returning home], which
could put pressure on the federation…
Ki: And draw out the queen’s attacker.
Mace: Go [with the queen] to Naboo and discover the identity of this dark
warrior. This is the clue we need to unravel the mystery of the Sith.

If you play this scene right, you could even make it look like the Jedi Council is sending Qui-Gon back to Naboo as punishment for disagreeing so publicly over Anakin, making Anakin feeling both guilty about Qui-Gon’s eventual death (gives “I don’t want to be a problem” a deeper meaning), as well as possible making him even more mad at the Jedi Council for their vindictiveness.

Yes! I always hated the way that scene was cut because Sam Jackson comes off with such a stilted delivery. Good suggestions. Great first post, DaystromX! Please continue to post.

Originally posted by Commander Courage: Another thought I had to spin things in a completely different direction: Is Anakin going to have a dream in Episode I? Putting together various pieces I constructed this scenario in my head:
-Activating the Podracer scene
-Misc. Trade Federation scene/perhaps contacting Grievous
-Grievous arriving on Tatooin scene
-CUT TO BLACK at conclusion (Even though it was just because of the test nature of the clip, I loved it)
-Anakin has a vision/dream
-Fade into Padme waking up Anakin.

This works on several levels. It cuts the now unecessary Qui-Gon/Anakin blood test scene, and has you assume he spent the night outside finishing up his pod. Anakin has a dream in the novelization in that exact spot as well, so taking a cue from that we could put together something similar to Trooperman's in SotDS. Some Padme material in the dream would make it an easy transition to her waking him up. I think the idea we were having in the SotDS thread was that Palpatine was in fact causing Anakin's dreams, so this may or may not work for a variety of reasons, but it's worth some discussion regardless.

Although I really like the blood-test scene and think it's actually one of the best scenes in the film, I really like this idea, and would like to try it. Perhaps some of the tone poem dialogue could be used.

Originally posted by Sluggo: Regarding the whole Maul/Greivous thing: What if Sidious viewed Maul as a failure after his supposed destruction on Naboo and dropped him as a Sith apprentice? Maul would undergo years of salvage work, and after a bit of bond-o, we are left with Greivous, a shell of what he used to be. Maybe the overall lack of a body would also account for him not being able to tap into the Force. That alone would result in being re-assigned by Sidious. This would be just a step beyond what Vandal just suggested.

I totally agree.

Originally posted by MTHaslett: I had ideas for restructuring the entire Coruscant sequence. This fits in well. There is too much ping-pong between Senate business and Jedi business in the courant sequence. It makes the action drag even more during an already slow sequence.

I've been meaning to talk to you more in-depth regarding your ideas for this portion of the film. I almost hate to cut out any part with Palpatine, since we've already cut Sidious... But I do agree that the whole Coruscant sequence brings the film to a near-screeching halt at a point where tension should be building toward the finale.

The other thing I really need to nail down with you is your ideas for getting Nute off of Naboo and onto his ship for the final battle.

I agree whole-heartedly, THX. The audience is most interested when they're trying to figure out what's going on. As long as there's finally a payoff, and at some point it all clicks and comes together, it's not a problem to just throw them right into the middle of things. This is a Kurosawa technique that Lucas admired and borrowed for Episode IV. It worked well for films like the Godfather too. That and its sequel is an example of a film so rich in texture and a story with such depth, that it takes several viewings before you truly understand all the things that are happening in that film.

Originally posted by Mask: One, very confused whats going on in the scene, need to see the dialogue or subtitles to really make a opinion on its dramatic/story telling significance. Two, Maul looks like a standing dummy just crossing his hands. Is there any way you can use footage from the Maul sequence on Coroscant like his face or the angle of the shot, or the scene on Theeds when he is walking/talking to Sidious.

Thanks, this criticism is helpful. Unfortunately, what I used is about all we have to work with. At this point, I don't have the capability to do things like digitally composite images, etc.

Three, why didnt you have any scenes of Maul speaking like "Tatooine is sparsely populated. If the trace was correct, I will find them quickly, master."

I tried it, but the music and sound-effects of the Coruscant cityscape overwhelmed the dialogue.

Can you use any dialogue from the video games or novel audio recording?

Sure I can, if I could find the appropriate clips.

Maybe since you dont want to show Sidious you can insert the line to end the conversation, "At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge." or even cut it too, "At last we will reveal ourselves. At last we will have revenge."

I thought about it, but the more I thought about it the less sense it made for him to be saying it to the Neimoidians.

Is this all rough cut or are people actually going to make new CGI scenes?

Definitely no CGI. Not by me anyway.

Originally posted by Commander Courage: Here's a crazy thought: Since the Maul/Sidious swap worked so well and everyone's big on Dooku being in Episode I, what do you think of some Saruman dialogue in the Sidious shots, with the close-ups of the hood darkened like in MagnoliaFan's version? Just a fun experiment to mess around with.

Another mind-blowing suggestion by Commander Courage that I never would have thought of. Excellent idea, My Friend. I'd love to try this, just to see if it could work.

Thanks to everyone for your comments.

Okay. Here's the alternate version of the previous clip I posted. Let me know which version you like better.

Greivous communicates with the Trade Federation

The Greivous dialogue I included at the very end is meant to be temporary until we decide what he should sound like.

I don't really like the Neimoidians' body language in this scene, but that of course will be helped by the dialogue. And I do like the location better than the conference room.

Thoughts?

Kinda like Vader and Tarkin.

Yes. I like that, THX.

Dooku in TPM? First of all its almost logistically impossible, and then we’ve got, “It’s a pity our paths have never crossed before, Obi-Wan.” It would feel too shoehorned in and out of place.

Oops, you're right, CC. I forgot about that line. It's too bad though, because I think it would improve his character if we saw him as a good Jedi and then in the next movie he's turned to evil. Again, it's about strengthening the little threads all throughout the saga. I just don't know how it could be accomplished without some serious CGI head replacement.

I'm starting to see it now. Honestly, the biggest convincer for me is "Why not?"

Exactly, Sluggo. But, that's WHY certain characters should be condensed. To give the saga more unity. And actually, contrary to your opinion, it's actually simplifying things. Why do we need to have a different villain every movie until we get to the OT?

These are the reasons we decided to do this:

-Maul didn't have a big enough part.

-Greivous came out of nowhere and was a p*ssy. An extremely dull and mishandled character.

-It strengthens the drama in episode III between Greivous and Obi-Wan and possibly Greivous and Anakin.

-It doesn't matter that they don't walk the same, he's in a mechanical suit! Besides, their eyes are very similar.

-It echos Vader's situation. We can assume only Sidious has this technology and keeps it a secret.

-Remember Palpatine can sense when his apprentice is in trouble. Palpatine was ON NABOO in the following scene.

-Plus, it might be a bigger draw for Anakin in Episode III when Palpy is talking about saving Padme, Anakin has already seen that he has the power to bring his apprentice back from the dead...

Why NOT do it? Why have a completely new character who contributes nothing to the story come out of nowhere in episode III and basically serve no purpose whatsoever?

Thanks for the try, CC. But why do they sound like members of city council? It's too wordy. They sound not only confused, but also intimidated by Greivous. Which brings us right back to where we started. I thought the point was to make the characters more villainous.

Nute can't be intimidated by Greivous, he's the one holding the leash. He should be instructing Grevious on all the horrible things he wants him to do to Amidala and the Jedi once they're captured. In Nute's mind, Greivous is working for HIM (even though he isn't). Unless we want to change it to where Greivous is the dominant role, and the Neimoidians are reporting to him.

It could even start with Nute saying something like, "And that, Lord Greivous, was the last time they appeared on any of our scopes..."

In any case, let's not draw attention to the fact that Greivous doesn't speak during the scene. In fact, he really doesn't need to say anything at all. All the audience needs to know is that he's in cahoots with the Trade Federation. It should just be played as if he's listening to Gunray intently and we just caught a snippet of their meeting.

No need to re-hash info we already know. We know they escaped. Now we know Greivous knows.

As for Rune, I think you've got him pegged correctly as the naysayer or voice of reason in the bunch. See, he's not cowardly, he just has common sense. But he's still greedy and he wants everything that can be gained by this plan if all goes well. His warnings are usually right, the problem is, no one listens to him because he's always getting slapped down by Nute and his wild delusions.

No need for the hologram to click on and off, the whole exchange is very brief, we're only hearing the most important part of their conversation.

Basically, it's:

Nute explains the situation to Greivous.
Tells him how he wants him to proceed.
Maximum of two or three sentences.
Greivous does his best "silent but violent" Sith Lord impression.
The name Sidious may or may not be dropped.
Rune interrupts with more common sense.
Nute slaps him down like a bitch.
End of scene.

So, as far as the actual dialogue is concerned, we need to ask ourselves, what is the point of the scene? The point is to simply and quickly establish the NAME of Greivous, the fact Greivous is affiliated with the Trade Federation and is now in pursuit of the heroes. Period. It serves no other purpose. This is not their first introduction to Greivous, we assume the Neimoidians are well aquainted with his work. He's not Boba Fett, he's not a hired hand. He's there as an enforcer for Sidious, to make sure everything goes according to plan, and that no one escapes. But, (I think) he should still be subordinate to Gunray. It's just like Tarkin and Vader.

I still believe his entire involvement in the story, as well as Anakin's role, would be strengthened if his sole purpose was to locate and retrieve the "vergence in the Force".

We have to be careful though. As we've seen with the Prequels, it's easy to fall into the trap of explaining too much. If you look at ANH, it just throws you into the middle of everything, and you kind of have to use your imagination to sort everything out. So, even if we make it ambiguous, I think the audience will still get it.

P.S. - Does anyone know where I can locate a German language version of Episode I?

The truth is, no. Not really. Although it would be ideal, the hologram flickering in is not possible, because I would need a clean version of the exact same background without the hologram. And even if I had that it would still be tricky to accomplish. We'll just have to assume that we come in during the middle of their conversation.

The lips moving is a definite no. BUT, we could add Greivous' dialogue when you're looking at Nute and only seeing the hood. I wish we could do more, but we've got to work with what we've got.

Unless, of course, there's some special effects genius out there reading this who wants to do it for us.

I didn't think this scene was possible to salvage at all until MTHaslett suggested editing it this way.

EDIT: They did a nice job on that Vader clip you posted. That's the best version of that scene that I've come across, and very close to what I want to accomplish.

Thanks, THX! That means a lot, coming from you. I actually really loved your idea for the Ewoks having Samurai voices when I first read about it in another thread. The audio could easily be lifted from Seven Samurai or any of the Kurosawa films. That could be a definite possibility for our version of ROTJ, depending on what Trooperman thinks. I agree it might vastly improve their character.

Hey Guys,

Here's another Neimoidian clip I threw together based on yesterday's suggestion by MTHaslett about a Sidous-less version of the scene introducing Darth Greivous. I hope you enjoy it. Again, I need a script for these guys. I tried to make them as nasty as possible.

Darth Greivous

These two scenes don't have to be back-to-back. I just put them together for effect.

It's interesting you guys brought this up today, because I just captured some great Liam Neeson dialogue from Batman Begins. Some of these could be applied to Anakin, some to Obi-Wan in any Episode, in part or in whole. Here are some of the individual quotes:

"What you really fear is inside yourself."

"You fear your own power, you fear your anger, the drive to do great or terrible things. Now you must journey inwards. You are ready. Breathe ... Breeeeeathe... Breathe in your fears."

"If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, and if they can't stop you... Then you become something else entirely."

"You have learned to bury your guilt with anger. I will teach you to confront it, and to face the truth."

"You were lost, but I believed in you. I took away your fear and I showed you a path. You were my greatest student."

"There are those without decency who must be fought without hesitation and without pity."

"Your anger gives you great power. But, if you let it... It will destroy you. As it almost did me."

"I know the rage that drives you. That impossible anger strangling the grief, until the memory of your loved ones is just poison in your veins. And one day you catch yourself wishing that the person you love had never existed ... so you'd be spared your pain."

Oops, sorry. I'll resend it right away.

Regarding subtitles: The subtitles in the original SW trilogy were burned in to the picture frame. They did not fade in and out. This was changed for the Def. Coll. and the Faces release. Now, the original prequels had subtitles in the frame that faded in and out. I liked this a lot. So I was leaning more towards burned in subtitles that fade in and out (in a different font from the clip I posted- that was a random font). But if there's a compelling reason not to, I'm open.

All right. You'll need to give me an example so I can duplicate it. I did some research and found the original subtitles are in a font called "ITC Franklin Gothic Demi Bold" with -30 tracking.

Ha ha- you know what, though? I like CC. I like all of you guys. Our different personalities and the checks and balances we have here make for excellent collaboration. I'm so happy I'm here.

And we're happy you're here as well. I think it's so great how this whole thing with the four of us has sort of organically grown out of your thread. But, don't try to defend Commander Courage. He knows where he stands with me.

Oh, and it just occured to me...the comment was made, "Wouldn't it be nice if Episodes I and II were released at the same time?" Yeah, that scenario would it nice More time to work is good....

Nope. Don't try to buy yourself more time either. My goal is to catch up with you for the May release. Hahaha! Just kidding. You've got all the time you want. But I would like to see this thing before I start collecting my social security.

WOW, MTH! Once again, your mind bends in mysterious ways, My Friend.

Great idea. You've got me on the bandwagon... Again.

Trooperman, I'm so glad you're following this thread. The Passion dialogue worked really well. I just took the appropriate scenes, plugged them into the audio layer and edited the sounds to match up with whatever way their mouth was moving at the time. I think it's Aramaic they're speaking. Everyone seems to have liked the result, which is a rich, exotic language, and a voice that can be quite intimidating.

This will never, ever happen as long as I'm involved. LOL! I don't like the idea of ANY other Force spirits than the ones we already have. It can get you in all kinds of trouble. Once you start with say, Qui-Gon, then why not Ki-Adi-Mundi? He was murdered. Along with all the other Jedi. And why stop with Jedi? What about Biggs? Red Leader? Porkins and the whole Rogue Squadron? And why not Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru? They were all murdered too! And while you're at it, just throw Whoopi Goldberg and Patrick Swayze in there as well. "What you talkin' bout Sam Wheat..."

I think you're right that Episode I is the place to start. Trooperman did say ROTJ would take less time, and I optimistically took that to mean something impossible, like he'd do it right away. Not likely is it?

Um, prolly not.

I like the idea that Maul has a second agenda while working with the Nemoidians -- but he is there to assist them as well. It is at the request of Sidious that he stays at the Nemoidian's side. If he senses the Vergence of the Force, it will be a coincidence for him just as it is for Qui Gon. But a beat of Maul recognizing the Force in Anakin as he fights Qui Gon at the Queen's ship would be something I'd like to see -- just a beat where Maul gives Anakin a second glance of "Hey, that kid's special. Note to self: keep an eye on this one." Especially if there were a way to make Anakin see Maul and be terrified by him there.

Maul/Gunray will work best if it reminds us of Vader/Tarkin, I think. But as clear as it was that Tarkin out-ranked Vader, it was still clear that Vader's agenda with Obi Wan was personal. So the more we can construct a second agenda for Maul, the better. It will also help us want to see him again as Grievous in Ep III.

But you forget, we're never going to see Maul and the Trade Federation together anymore. Not in one scene. Maul now appears three times: 1) on Tattooine with the probes. 2) to fight Qui-Gon in the desert and 3) he disappears until the doors open in the hangar on Naboo.

He is clearly someone with his own agenda in this version and is certainly not taking orders from Gunray, it just wouldn't make any sense. It won't work as a Tarkin/Vader dynamic because Maul and Gunray never even see or speak to each other. That's why I think Maul should be on his own mission from Sidious, solely focused on Anakin. It would make him much more threatening, the boogeyman unleashed to steal a child away from the arms of a noble pair of knights. And the Jedi are just like, "What the? Who the hell is this? And what does he want?" The last thing they expected to face on this mission was a Sith Warrior. They assume he's been hired by Gunray to go after the Queen, but it soon becomes apparent he's wanting more. Maul catches them completely off-guard, and Qui-Gon pays with his life. This scenario also means that when he reappears in Episode III, not only does he have a vendetta against Obi-Wan, but now he's also got Anakin face-to-face finally, only to find he will be replaced by him.

Now, if you're still insistent that Maul needs to be affiliated with the Federation, then we will HAVE to include at least one scene with Sidious where Gunray and Maul are both taking orders from him. Otherwise, it just won't add up, IMO.

What's our title for Episode I?

Great question! I was going to ask you the same thing. I don't want to use anything that's been used before. I know someone suggested in another thread about it not having any subtitle, just "Star Wars Episode I". I'm not sure how I feel about that, though I'm not completely opposed to the idea. I'm starting to get excited about this.

The only other problem I see with that is using proper names; Amidala, Jedi, Sith, etc. Perhaps the German foreign language track could serve as a companion source, as I assume it would match TPofC the best.

Yes, my thoughts exactly, however, there is no German language track for Episode I. Only Spanish. Doesn't that suck? Spanish might work. And yes, I'm confident there's enough material to spread thorughout the film.

Looking at "Balance of the Force" for inspiration, more topics of discussion for our Episode I came up:
-Are we making the TF slave traders? That was a great character change done by MagnoliaFan, but the problem I see with it is Padme later saying on Tatooine, "I can't believe there's still slavery in the galaxy." What does everyone think?

I think slave traders are one of the most frightening things I can think of. Today you're living life as usual, then tomorrow they come to your planet, take over, drag you and your family away and all of a sudden you're a slave. For the rest of your life. Period. It's chilling and brutal. Like something out of the Bible. It makes sense also that these industry barons would need a massive compulsory workforce to fuel their production quotas. After all, we're talking about supplying an entire galaxy here. Think of the Neimoidians as Ancient Egyptians. Nute could be more of a Pharoah-like character. He may even have delusions of being named a diety of some kind.

-If we wanted to include one scene with Sidious, the balcony scene with Maul/Grievous would be it. However, as it occured to me in an earlier post on the subject, it was idiotic to reveal the Sith were on Coruscant. What I suggest is that for an establishing shot of the scene we utilize the Sith Wearhouse of Episode II. Manipulate the shot using night filters, fullscreen, whatever would work so it's not the exact same shot we see in II. Then darken the Sith's suroundings on the balcony. Just a thought, as I think we should see Sidious at least once in I.

I still hold fast to the decision that if you even show Sidious ONCE, you've spoiled it, because it's the mystery of not fully knowing what's going on that draws you into the story. Although... Sidious is such a seductive character... maybe... possibly? At the very end? A hint even? Can we pull it off without giving it away?

-Speaking of the Sith, are we going to go through with Darth Maul=General Grievous/Darth Grievous? I've laid out detailed plans on how to accomplish this in other threads. MTH is in agreement with me, what about the rest of the team?

I totally agree with this. I think it could only strengthen the saga as a whole.

Furthermore, instead of Maul/Grievous being just a mindless pawn for the Trade Federation, maybe he should have his own Sith agenda. For instance, instead of him being sent in pursuit of the Queen to make her "sign the treaty", suppose he arrives on Tattooine on his own accord during his search to locate and capture this "vergence in the Force" his master has been sensing. This could be accomplished by having Maul/Grievous arrive on Tattooine even before the Jedi. Luckily, by chance and perhaps through the will of the Force, the Jedi happen to run into the boy first.

Of course, the Jedi mistakenly think he's a hired assassin (or something) after the Queen. But later, when he appears on Naboo, he's there having traced the boy to that location. He has no affiliation with the Trade Federation. His goal is to eliminate the Jedi so he can deliver the boy to his master. This keeps Anakin at the forefront of the story. Suddenly the Jedi are now protecting Anakin from the "mysterious Dark Warrior". And with the Sidious scenes removed it makes this scenario very possible.

Yes, I have 65 former ILM Employees camped out at my house working 'round the clock to churn this stuff out for you guys.

Seriously though, I'm thinking we should set aside the others for now and focus on nailing down Episode One first. It seems like the all-too-logical place to start. Agreed?

Of course we can discuss the others, but I know Trooperman mentioned he wanted to play a part in the ROTJ edit. And right now he's sort of busy. And since he's handling II and III as well, that leaves us with episodes I, IV, and V. And V needs virtually no work at all. So, we've already got a pretty darn good start on a complete saga.

Oh, and one more thing... I've now tried playing with the color saturation, and it seems to have worked well. So, it looks like I'm going to be able to "age" the Prequels by desaturating them a bit after all.

It's official, Commander Courage. You never agree with ANYTHING!!! I for one love the idea of a new love theme. Across the Stars was just a rehash of his Nixon soundtrack. And you're right, Trooperman, it reminds us too much of that horrible film called Attack of the Clones.

Regarding subtitles: Should we be working toward "burned" subtitles, like the ones burned into the picture in the original Greedo scene, or are we going to be using the ones that appear in the bottom black portion of the letterbox bars?
