It should probably be one of the last things we finalize if that's possible. We will probably find lots of opportunities to "cover" problems with Nemoidian dialogue that aren't apparent yet.

Oh no, MTH, I totally agree. That's why I'm so concerned. This is one of the most important things IMO. So, don't worry, I'm not going to rip it out of anyone's hands. I just wanted it to be clear that my subtitles might be worded differently, but the meaning of the words will most likely be the same. And of course nothing will be finalized without everyone's approval. If you have a problem with something, it can always be discussed and then changed.

Fear not, My Friend.

This is excellent, MTH! I'll most likely change the Neimoidian dialogue, (I know you said it was temp) but the gist of it will be the same. And is there no "stow aboard seperate ships" scene with the Jedi to establish where they're going and what their plan is? Or do we not need it?

In any case, you have my approval on this. Unless CC has any major objections before Erik adds it to the site.

There's a few changes you mentioned that I really, really love, like the button being pushed and the droids marching down the hallway. In my opinion, that's just gold. See, that's what it's all about. It's about changing the perception of the scene while using what we have available. I think this is gonna turn out great.

Great work, MTH. And thank you.

Oh, and please make sure you're keeping track of changes you make to the script after it's been posted on the site, so that we all know what's going on.

Thanks, MTH, but don't do that. I'll find someone who has it, one way or another. God knows I'm not shelling out another penny to Lucasfilm to buy an inferior version of an already inferior film that I already own. And you shouldn't either. Someone will have it.

TJ's already got a rough-cut! *jaw drops*

That's beyond incredible! And it makes me a very happy droid.

I also wanted to let all of you know that tjdavis1138 has been following this thread and has graciously volunteered today to lend a helping hand to our editing "department". He is experienced with programs like Vegas and fluent in other areas of the editing process that I'm still a little foggy on, so I'm sure he'll prove to be a valuable resource during the "re-making" of this film.

I'll be talking with him about learning how to accomplish the things we want to add into the movie (at the level of quality we want), including the opening crawl. MTH, to answer your question, It's my goal to go less the way of MagFan for the crawl, and instead reach for Darth Editous quality... Although, Rebel11_38's are just as nice! If Reb is interested in doing this, his help would be greatly appreciated.

At this point, we should stick with MTHaslett and Commander Courage only. Anyone else's suggestions can be approved by one or both of them. And I guess I'll have the final word. Trooperman, of course, is always welcome to his seat at the table as one of the original four, if he ever returns from that black hole he's disappeared into.

So, once again, a HUGE THANKS to tjdavis1138 for your offer of help. And welcome to the team!

This is really coming together, Guys. Good work!

Long live the Ranch.

This is perfect, MTH! It's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. I'll start on this right away.

And yes, I can live with just "Star Wars". The more I actually think about it, with the original logos, the more I like it.

Do me a favor though, Guys. Let me write up a version of the crawl first before anyone else starts one. It's just something that's important to me, and also something that has to be handled very carefully as to not spin the entire thread out of control. I'll write up a version, and then you guys can add/delete at will. Is that cool?

And another big thanks to Erik for volunteering to host the script! That's awesome.

(Sorry it took so long to comment, MTH, but some of us work the night-shift. )

I guess I'll be the tie-breaker here. I've read through all of this and I have to say that I'm completely on MTHaslett's side of the boat for this film. His ideas are clear, concise and logical. (Not that yours aren't, CC.) But, I buy his version of the story 100%.

I say we take this as the official outline and immediately bring the focus of this thread to the discussion of more details for the beginning of the film. Particularly, we need to go more in depth on the character of Nute Gunray and exactly what he wants from Naboo and Amidala.

First off, how do we link the slavery aspect to what she mentions about the "Trade Boycott"?

And I'm really interested in adding an Ancient Egyptian-like conqueror quality to the Neimoidians, possibly including something about Nute wanting to be named a diety. I think this could elevate his character to a more classical level of evil. Furthermore, on a more contemporary level, we could mirror something akin to a Saddam/Kuwait/Desert Storm-like situation.

I must say, however, that although I'm all in favor of this feeling like a stand-alone film, it's still the beginning of a saga and needs a subtitle like the rest. I'm not sure if "Fate of the Jedi" is it. Only because I don't think it's clear you're referring to Qui-Gon, but it seems more like you're speaking of the Jedi as a whole, whose "fate" isn't truly known until Episode III. Plus, not to mention the whole "Return of the Jedi" similarity, or maybe that was the point...

But, what about something like "The Battle Begins", "Knights of the Republic", "Warriors of the Force", or even "Duel of the Fates"?

If you're wanting to keep with the "pulpy" feel, something like "The Great Droid Invasion", "Cloud of Evil", or "The Creeping Fear" LOL! or how about "Crouching Rancor, Hidden Bantha"? ...er... maybe not.

I've got it! "Star Wars: Episode I - Anakin's Day At The Ranch".

P.S. - I am in need of a full-screen version of Episode I. Maybe someone can help me out.

Okay. Can you give me an example of what you mean by this? Are talking about lowering the brightness level or what?

Ideally the dialouge would start while the screen was still black, then the pictures slowly fades in to Qui-Gon placing his hands on Anakin's shoulders. The "Anakin!" transitioning to Qui-Gon getting stabbed is prefectly unsettling. I'd cut the shot of Obi-Wan though. "Great or terrible things" I would change the visuals to winning the pod race and leading the Clonetrooper army respectively.

That's easily done. Yeah, I wasn't sure about that Obi-Wan shot, I'll take it out.

And I know all the dialogue comes from Batman Begins, but where are we going with that? What purpose does it serve to his character, and is this Qui-Gon really talking to him or is he just imagining it?

It's a mirror. It's Luke at the tree. This is Anakin's premonition that his life is about to change. The death of Qui-Gon is symbolic of the life Anakin is about to leave behind. It also gives him the courage to recognize what his fears are and conquer them to win the pod race. Is that the pseudo-psychological answer you needed?

And is there a way to seperate the Ducard lines from the snap, crackle, and pop noises of the fire in the background?

Believe me, if there was, I would've done it. But, I'm working on finding a way to separate the sound effects from the dialogue. Until then, if it makes you feel any better, just think of it as the sound of Qui-Gon's funeral pyre.

Padme saying "Anakin" (which is in the scene I believe) at the end of the dream, waking him up, would make for a better transition as well.

She doesn't say "Anakin". But I can make her say it. You're right, that would be better.

Hope I don't sound too critical, I really enjoyed it and see many possibilities here, it just needs to be refined.

But you do! REVEALED your opinion is! Commander, you should know by now I don't have a problem re-doing things until we get them right.

Glad you liked Narnia, great film. Though if we want to use any of the dialogue we may need to obtain a copy...before it is officially available fo you know what I mean.

Yes... I know what you mean. If you find any leads on that, let me know please.

I don't see what character development we get from jar jar, quigon or the gungans from these scenes (at least nothing we could not get from their scene later in the movie). Besides, we need to get to the point of the movie, which now is a story of Qui Gon running into anakin and their relationship, the nemoidian fleet and their invasion, and whatever we can do with amidala's story. But that's just my opinion, i could be wrong.

I heartily agree with you, Sir.

Well, I'm back and I must say, Narnia was fantastic. It really was, CC. "You were right..." Definitely one to buy. Neeson dialogue is ripe for the picking.

But, why must you hold on to things like the "Trade Federation Theme"? It's time you stopped drinking George Lucas' Kool-Aid. I'm kidding. It's actually one aspect of TPM that I can take or leave. It's just one of those things like Trooperman was talking about (regarding the love theme), where it's been associated with badness for so long that it actually spoils the music. But I'm wiling to compromise on that one if you and MTH feel strongly enough about it.

Regarding Jar-Jar: Jar-Jar WILL be subtitled for the reasons outlined by MTH. It's a must. I know it's a lot of reading, but, we need to find a way to fundamentally change his character, his motivation, everything about him must be born anew, and without copying MagFan. What if Jar-Jar was already on his way to Theed to deliver a very important message to the Queen from the Gungans when he ran into the Jedi? That may be a starting point, unless someone has a better idea.

Neimoidians: WILL be subtitled. So far, everyone has seemed to like the clips I made with the Passion dialogue, so that one's a given. I do, however, need to discover how to do subtitles. Which shouldn't be a problem, I just haven't focused on it yet.

Darth Maul IS Greivous: One way or another we will make this work. Because the alternatives are simply unacceptable. Whatever we have to do, we'll make it work.

LOTR montage: I have no plans to do this. Unless someone wants to convince me that it's a good (and necessary) idea.

The Dukoo thing: The jury is still out. Even in my mind. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

The Gungan Battle: is the part I've always hated because I feel like I'm watching a Disney cartoon. Not a Star Wars film. When EVERYTHING in the picture is animated, it becomes an animated movie. When you say it's the best part of the movie, MTH, I have no idea where you're coming from. However, there is hope. Perhaps with some desaturation or color effects we can make it look more realistic. The shot of them coming out of the mist, I like. I always have, since the trailer. Unfortunately, what follows, particularly when both sides are in a perfect line shooting at each other, it becomes ridiculous. And those huge, blue bola things I wasn't a big fan of either. Too organic for Star Wars. Maybe that was the point.

But, in any case, I feel confident that a happy medium can be reached.

I've volunteered to do the editing on this project, as long as you guys (MTH and CC) take the responsibility of making this into your TPM dream-project. Going through the whole movie by committee is not going to work. But, if you guys (MTH and CC) can write the script and direct me where you want it go, and we can iron out any controversies as we go along, then I'm ready to start knocking this puppy out. And though I know, of course, that Trooperman is extremely busy with editing SOTDS and his personal life (that's why I haven't mentioned him much)... as always his contributions and direction are more than welcome and appreciated. (No pressure. )

Things like music choice and dialogue flow are minor concerns until you get the plot and characters set in stone. I mean, we're working from the ground up here. TPM is going to be the hardest to do, but it's the film which will benefit the most from our work. 80% of what we've been given by Lucas is garbage. The best 20% can be preserved, and the rest will have to be dusted off and prettied up... And turned into a classic.

The online script is a PERFECT idea, Sluggo! Bless you, erikstormtrooper for coming forward to help with this! I know that this will greatly help me personally in the editing process if the others are willing to do it.

I think we'll have to, cause I'm not waiting that long either. It shouldn't be too much trouble to just plug him in to the necessary scenes once that footage becomes available... Unless it's in a completely different format like Blu-Ray or HD-DVD. Is 2007 even a confirmed date? I know it's long been speculated, but you know how that goes.

If you have the soundtrack , give it a listen and tell me what you think.

I'm already on it. Xizor's theme I've long been a fan of, and I've been testing it for the TF. It works best during the invasion scene as the huge line of ships and droids marches toward Theed. It's a definite possibility for a permanent change. Let the Trade Federation Music Defenders start crying now.

-I would suggest cutting out the ENTIRE underwater sequence. It has no point to it all other than some random action. I would suggest having jar jar mention to them a city of humans on the side of the forest..... then qui-gon says "A city? Can you take us there"....Jar Jar in his excitement sayd "Sure, I know a secret route, this way!"...............Then bam, they end up at Theed. For gods sakes we need to make jar jar a helpful character, one that they seriously owe some debt to.

I've already done this for my personal edit of "Star Wars TPM: No Bullshit Edition". And God, the movie flows so much better this way. They go from meeting Jar-Jar, to the invasion scene, to Nute Gunray landing on the planet's surface, "Ah, victory..." Then, boom. The shot from the deleted scene of Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Jar-Jar at the "waterfall" entrance of Theed Palace, and they're immediately off to rescue the queen. You cut TWENTY MINUTES of dead weight! It's absolutely useless material!

Then again, I went on to eliminate any trace of Boss Nass, the Gungans, the Gungan Battle... Most of Jar-Jar, etc... This makes the end flow so much better as well, IMO. Because you're only focusing on Anakin, the Duel, and the Padme/Gunray plot. And that's enough!

For me, it's just much more watchable, because I only have to watch the parts I like. But that's for me to watch personally and not an edition which fits into the saga as a whole. Because cutting those things creates giant plot problems, particularly with Padme's reveal as the Queen, which was a horribly executed subplot anyway.

Whelp, I'm off to finally see Narnia at the recommendation of Commander Courage. I'm hoping to see some good, usable Liam Neeson dialogue up there, CC!

Have a good night, Guys.

--InfoDroid

P.S. - Right now I'm creating a test clip of an Anakin "Death of Qui-Gon" Dream Sequence someone suggested. I like how it's turning out. I'll post it soon.

EDIT: And yes MTH! We're definitely on the same page tonight, as I just went through a "crisis of discouragement" with all the confusion floating around here. It's time to snap together and start making concrete decisions here. Seriously.

Again, just like Greivous, we're talking about a major character that appears out of thin air. No set-up. No foreshadowing. And all of a sudden, you get to Episode II and you're supposed to care that this "Dooku" guy was once a Jedi but now is an enemy of the Republic. Then you find out he was actually Qui-Gon's master. THEN you find out he's now a Dark Lord of the Sith.

If you say the spine of the story is Qui-Gon and the Council, and Dooku supposedly turned against the Jedi Order and went searching for Sidious because of what happened to Qui-Gon, then why can't we incorporate some of that into Episode I?

You don't have to get in depth and derail the whole movie, but at least establish some sort of relationship between Qui-Gon, Dooku and the Council.

What if, for instance, Qui-Gon was talking to Dooku on his little Jedi communicator about the "vergence" he has encountered? Dooku might advise him to bring him before the council.

And I'd love, love, love to construct a scene for the end between Dooku, Yoda and Mace where Dooku expresses his anger at the Council about what has happened to Qui-Gon and vows to track down the Sith master behind all of this. I just think this would lead us into the situation in Episode II rather nicely.

This thread is on fire! I love it!

Sorry I haven't responded to any of your posts yet, Guys. I picked up three old Hammer Horror classics and watched those today, combing them for good Christopher Lee dialogue... Some good stuff. The great part is his voice still sounds the same.

I really think if we're focusing on the Qui-Gon aspect of the story (which I think is a good idea) then we need to include something (at least one scene) with his mentor Dooku. But, I think it's important to first see Dooku in a good context, as a good Jedi - which will make his turn in Episode II all the more of a betrayal. There has to be some way to do it. Has to be.

More later.
