That clip was cool, Chalala! I like the idea. If you couldn't hear the original ROTS music under the ROTJ, it'd be better. But it's a good concept. The only other thing I'd mention is that it has no obvious parallel with Luke fighting Vader, but I do love that track and of course the Emperor's theme fits extremely well there. Which makes me wonder why we never got an all-out, full-on rendition of the Emperor's theme during ROTS. Alas, another missed opportunity.

This was recently posted by "CO" in another thread:

I was watching my 7 year old nephew yesterday, and he is a big SW fan. So I put all 6 movies on the floor and told him I wanted to ask a couple of questions on why he loves SW. First, he sees them as six episodes, as he doesn't know the names of the movies by heart, just Episode I, Episode II, etc.

I first asked him what are your favorites?

-He pointed, "I like Episode 4 & 5."

What which ones are your least favorite?

-He pointed, "Episode 1 & 2"

How come you don't like Episode 1 & 2?

-Episode 3 tells you everything you need to know about Anakin turning to Darth Vader, Episode 1 & 2 are just alright I guess.

Do you like anything about Episode 1?

-He kinda nodded, I like Darth Maul, but he dies at the end.

What do you like better Episode 3 or 6?

-I like Episode 3 better

Why do like Episode 4 & 5 the best?

-Because they are the coolest movies out of all 6, I like Episode 5 the most.

Why do you like Episode 5 the most?

-He just looked at me and said, "I am your father!" That is the best part of all the movies.

I like looking at Star Wars from a kid's point of view, preferably a kid who's never seen it before. Things like this make me excited about elevating the PT and ROTJ to the same level.

Favorite old-school star wars game?
Time
If we're talking old "skool", I used to love the Atari version of Empire Strikes Back. You were a snowspeeder, which was basically just a rectangle, and you kept passing the same legless AT-AT over and over again, and you'd have to fire at the blinking parts, which were "weaknesses" in the armor. So basic, but so awesome at the time.

The ROTJ arcade game was great too. You sat down in it and you were Luke on a speeder bike trying to evade Biker Scouts and Ewok traps. And if you passed that level you went on to be the Falcon dodging rafters in the Death Star II's superstructure. I can still hear the intro with Han saying "Parts and technical group, forest moon." And Vader saying "Leave them to me. I will deal with them myself."

Anybody else remember those? Or am I a 25-year-old geezer?

digitally remastered

I'd have to agree with Adam, I'm all for the pristine image. The recent remaster of Casablanca is incredible, as are many other classic DVD reissues. Seeing them in this quality really makes these old films come alive for me, where before they were sleep-inducing. Someone like Humphery Bogart becomes a real guy in a real situation, instead of an untouchable movie icon shrouded in a silver hail of flecks and scratches. Subtle lighting nuainces, set design and other details are now an unveiled testament to the amount of hard work that went into these films, and suddenly if you didn't before, you now understand why they are revered as "classics".

This is why I was extremely disappointed with the transfer of The Godfather DVDs. Artistic grain is one thing, but these films look absolutely horrible. Sorry, Francis, but it's NOT enjoyable to watch a DVD with that much grain. It's a sin to trap a monument like The Godfather under a cloak of dirt and haze, and sell it to the consumer for top-dollar.

Yeah, TPM is not a bad soundtrack. But it was summarily DESTROYED in editing by Ben Burtt. So much so that now it has little emotional significance because it's been juxtaposed with images we hate for so long. The only redeemable theme, IMO is Duel of the Fates and (possibly) the TF theme. Pretty much everything else has to go.

Pretty much.

How about one of those all-star soundtracks, "music inspired by the Phantom Menace"? Featuring Mariah Carey, Elton John, Ja Rule, and The Black-Eyed Peas? Elton can sing "Circle of Life" while Qui-Gon explains midi-chlorians. Comments, suggestions?

I'm working in-depth on the soundtrack now. I'm drawing from a myriad of sources including John Williams material (from his filmography, nothing too recognizable), Joel McNeely's "Shadows of the Empire", ureleased tracks from the "TPM video game", "The Knights of the Old Republic 2", and unreleased material from ROTS and AOTC that was featured in "Battlefront II". I also MIGHT take some cues from the Ewoks movies soundtracks if appropriate. Maybe for Jar-Jar's theme or something, if we decide he gets a theme.

Anyway, work is progressing.

Can we send an O-OT representative to a SW convention?
Time
The weird part is: Spielberg released both the Original and the new version with his "E.T." special edition DVD. Why didn't Lucas do likewise?

If the changes are indeed "improvements" to what was originally possible (as they are in his mind), then comparing it side-by-side with the original would only serve as a testament to the "wonders" he has performed with it. Right? Why does he feel so threatened?

Unfortunately, it's not simply a cut and paste issue. I mean, it is and it isn't.

I'm matching the words to the mouth movements, and I'm trying to match the right cadence and tone of voice for what he's saying. If I further filter it for words that someone may or may not recognize, I'm left with even less material to work with.

So, I have two problems: 1) I have a limited number of phrases to play with, and 2) Most of those phrases probably contain SOMETHING that someone might recognize. Whether it be "Meshiacha" or "Yeshua Nazareth" or... "Allah".

The other thing is the lack of proper nouns issue. Like "Amidala", "Jedi", etc. It's gonna be the same problems when I go to dub Jar-Jar.

You're right, darthpreston, when you say we shouldn't ignore something that potentially distracts from the authenticity of the experience. You're right for pointing it out, as well as Sluggo, and of course Trooperman. It's just frustrating because there's a tendency to over-analyze everything on these boards and to expect the impossible. Sometimes you guys just seem unpleasable.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about "getting it right". I mean, we can analyze and discuss things, and then we can over-analyze them into oblivion until the idea just doesn't exist anymore.

I'm not saying you guys in particular are doing that now. But so far every clip I've posted has been torn to shreds. Which is fine since they were test clips, but when it comes to serious work on the movie, I'm afraid the same thing is going to happen. But I guess, that's what pushes us to do better... To go beyond what we'd normally settle for.

When I decided to do this, I really didn't even fathom the language being a problem since no one I know speaks ancient Aramaic or ancient Hebrew. With the exception of some unknown tribal island language, that's about as obscure as it gets. But, evidently, I was wrong. Maybe I didn't take the Passion's popularity into enough account.

In any case, I'm thankful for your feedback. Because of this, I'm now considering just recording some totally original material and seeing how it works. Suggestions?

A SPARK OF HOPE FROM OT.COM WE HAVE A NEW CAUSE !!!
Time
Hey Guys,

Just got Jay's e-mail (great idea, BTW) and I see you guys are having your own little all-night telethon here! Well, I think it's great. This community is incredible and it's all thanks to Star Wars.

Rikter is a giving and selfless guy, who has given more than his share to this community. I'm happy to help him and his family in any way I can, as we all should be.

But, let's not lose sight of what's really important here...

GreenCapt is NOT going to strip!

YYYYES!

Big thanks to PSYCHO_DAYV and YIYF for putting all this together. And I hope all of you at OT.com (especially Rikter and his adorable daughter) have a Happy Holiday and best wishes for the New Year!

Now I tingle inside.

LOL!

Maybe you'd prefer "Wee wood nevva do anneeting wiff-out dee approovle of dee sennat..."?

I don't know if "Allah" was in there. I do know "Meshiacha" was. Along with "Yeshua Nazareth".

But, I mean, really. What can I do? Short of inventing a language and re-recording it. Which I may have to do. We'll see.

The question is, if you didn't know it was from "The Passion" would we really be having this discussion?

Wow! That was quite a post, TM!!! Nice to hear from you after all this time! Your input is ALWAYS welcome, and I think the process you outlined above sounds good to me. I think it would be great for you to take the final pass on this edit and fine-tune everything. This was always intended to be partly your version and fit seamlessly with the coming Trooperman edits. And thanks for sending us your notes! That helps me know how what we're doing will fit with what you're doing.

And for the rest of you: Sorry for the lack of posts lately guys, but we've been hard at work on this project and I can tell you, it IS progressing nicely. The main group has been conversing through AIM to get all the details ironed out. We'll let you know when we have something to show you.

Thanks! Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

MTH, great post, we'll discuss it in-depth via IM.

CC, I'd have to disagree with your comments about TJ's clip. I don't think you're imagining what it's going to be as a finished project. You're only looking at the first layer and rushing to summary judgment, when there's still six more layers to be added on top of what's there. Not to mention that AFTER those six other layers are applied it's still only a first cut. Try to bear that in mind before throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Proof is coming, you've just gotta give it more time. This project is only into it's first week of serious progress.

Thanks,

--InfoDroid

P.S. - If you want things to be the same as they are in The Phantom Menace, I'm sure you have the DVD. Watch it.

Thanks for the comments, Hal9000!

We've had a recent breakthrough on the possibility of doing Dooku as a hologram in front of the Jedi Council, thanks to tjdavis1138. Without tipping our hand too much here, the plan is to use old Hammer Horror footage of a slightly younger Christopher Lee, process it as a hologram, and edit it with Lee dialogue from other films, intercut with reaction shots of Yoda, Mace, etc.

Sorry that the new Neimoidian dialogue will ruin your experience of The Passion, but so far this method has worked extremely well. Although it's not set in stone. "Audio morphing", I'm afraid, might yield the same results as MagFan's edit. I'm actually in talks with an older Greek gentleman I know who has some acting experience and may be interested in translating the Neimoidian script into Greek and recording the dialogue. He's got a great, deep, intimidating voice! Similar to the guy in the Passion. I just wonder if Greek is too recognizable a language. To me, it sounds alien, but to someone who is familiar with it...

On a seperate note, Hal, for some reason I feel indebted to you. We've talked in the past, either you sent me something or I sent you something in the mail. But I haven't seen your name pop up on here in a long time. You might've sent me my Darth Editous edit. If that's so then thanks again and I still owe ya one!
