Not to contradict you, MTH, but just for the sake of dicussion: The first "Pirates of the Carribean" movie had a subtitle. "The Curse of the Black Pearl". There've been many others as well. Especially recently. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, Lord of the Rings, Lemony Snicket, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia... If they know it's going to be a series, as we know, then it is titled appropriately. There is a series title, and an episodic subtitle.

olzen, I disagree. After looking at it closely, analyzing the dramatic structure, analyzing the way the film was put together, trying what was possible versus what was actually done, Lucas' "Menace" was an absolute disaster. He and his team dropped the ball in almost every way. It's a showcase of bad acting and missed opportunities. A textbook example of how NOT to make a film. Hence the reason we're trying to save this film from the fumbles of its own creator.

I always liked the idea of using "Duel of the Fates" for the title. But, it violates the "of the" rule. And any titles that mention "The Prophecy" always make me think of that string of bad Christopher Walken movies from the 80's and 90's...

Adamwankenobi, it's not going to be named "The Phantom Menace", for obvious reasons. Furthermore, the elimination of Sidious in the film will make that title even less appropriate, unless it refers to something going on behind the scenes, which a first-time viewer might not understand.

Dangelus, your Vader clips sound awesome for a first attempt! I think they sound VERY close to the real thing. I'd keep tweaking it and see how close you can actually get. There's all kinds of JEJ dialogue out there too. The Lion King, Field of Dreams, The Sandlot, The Hunt For Red October, just to name a few. Not sure if they have any usable dialogue, but you never know.

And Trooperman, I just noticed your earlier post. You must've been typing at the same time I was. I liked the long-rumored title "Balance" also, but like you said, it's already taken. I fear we're using too many ideas from MagFan's edit already, don't you think?

Lawrence of Arabia may be a possibility for the desert footage, if the age of the material isn't too obvious. I had a copy on DVD (the transfer wasn't really that great), but I finally traded it in. It was boring to the point of inducing nausea. The cinematic equivalent of watching paint dry. But hey, it's a classic. And Alec Guiness is always a delight to watch.

Trooperman, we'd love to hear your comments on ANYTHING at this point. You know that any involvement you can find time to offer this project is not only welcomed, but greatly appreciated.

P.S. - I dunno... Maybe Adam's right. Maybe it should be "The Phantom Menace".

What Star Wars has meant to you
Time
I can't think of what life would be without having that Star Wars-inspired foundation. I've never known life without it, it was my childhood.

My brother is eleven years older than me, so when I turned three (1983), not only was it the year ROTJ was in theaters, but it was also the year I inherited all of my brother's Star Wars toys, while he pursued more "grown-up" teenage interests. The original Death Star playset, all the original action figures with carrying case (Greedo was headless for some reason), his posters, his records, his books, his ESB bedsheets... All of it.

Couple this with the fact that all the ROTJ stuff soon went on clearance. You could go to Sears and get Stormtroopers, Gamorrean Guards, Prune Face or Squid Head for like 50 cents each! And for Christmas I got boxes filled with landspeeders, dewbacks, taun-tauns, the skiff, the Jabba playset, everything! In the second grade I remember reciting and acting out Darth Vader's death scene in the lunch room with other kids. It was in the time I spent playing in this world with these characters that my creativity and sense of imagination was really fostered and inspired.

Then, when I was seven, my parents (who were high-school sweethearts who had been married for 27 years) went through a bitter divorce, and my dad literally BECAME Darth Vader. I began to see the world through a Star Wars filter. I could really identify with Luke and the arc of the Skywalker storyline. And my father played the role of the villain in my life for many, many years.

Long story short: Seventeen years later... I believe it was the summer "Attack of the Clones" was in full swing in theaters... By some miraculous twist of fate, my parents were reunited and soon remarried, after hardly seeing each other for almost two decades!

And again I was reminded of that Star Wars foundation in my brain when I was able to spend some quality time with my dad. Getting that close to him after so many years had passed, I was surprised to come to terms with the fact that sure he made some wrong decisions, did some bad things, but he was still just a man. Flawed. Human. Redeemable.

I was able to get to know my father for the first time since those few perfect moments I remember as a small boy, and was able to fully reconcile with him, and finally felt complete for the first time in my life.

Less than six months later, he had a heart attack and passed away.

It's strange how life works sometimes. How strange, and how amazing... That's the kind of thing that seperates Star Wars from other movies. It resonates with us on a deeper, more personal level than anything else can. It was written as mythology. The function of mythology is for people to pass life lessons down from generation to generation. The stories can entertain us, but they can also serve as a mirror, teaching us and preparing us to deal with things we may encounter in our own real lives.

So, for me, the Star Wars saga, aside from being a great collection of movies, will forever be the story of Anakin, Luke, my father and I.

Hey Gang,

Although "The Chosen One" is a title which is decidedly on-topic for the events that take place in the film, it's not only redundant (Episode One: The Chosen One), but it also seems very dull to me. Doesn't sound like a classic title, nor is it a title which would compel me to watch the movie. It's mysterious, but not very exciting.

To find a title, first we have to analyze the other titles it will be in the company of. ALL of the titles refer to the broader-scale galactic events we see unfold in the film. Shroud of the Dark Side, Revenge of the Sith, A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi. Really read these titles and compare them with any ideas you have. We would like to avoid "of the", I do know that was something we decided earlier. So, if any of you have any BRILLIANT, well-thought-out ideas, please let us know.

Personally, I like "Star Wars: The Battle Begins". I'm not saying "it's the one!" But that one just appeals to my personal taste. I must admit, although the novelty of being title-less is intriguing to me, I'm also a little bothered by it for the reasons previously pointed out by darthpreston.

I want to make it clear, however, that by commenting on this, I'm not necessarily fostering the idea that now "we need a title", but at this early stage, I feel it shouldn't be a matter that has been completely taken off the table.

In the end, I'd be just as satisfied with having no title, and would rather have no title than one that doesn't fit 100%.

EU books: A funny Lucas contradiction
Time
For those of you baffled by this "no water on Coruscant, so why does it rain?" thing: You're treating Star Wars as if it's science-fiction. It's not science-fiction. Although it is set in space, the story and imagery are clearly fantasy-based mythology. From explosions in space, to lightning being shot from people's fingers, to the scientifically improbable mechanics of a lightsaber blade, the entire saga defies logic and science. The characters and locations represent certain Jungian archetypes and are not in need of a scientific explanation for their appearance. Lucas set the saga in another galaxy in another time specifically so that he wouldn't have to explain things like this.

Lucas is steeped in film lore, so the Frankenstein connection someone mentioned was probably very much a factor when designing this scene. Plus, a perfect place (visually) for the Emperor to be seen is a lightning storm.

I think a more important question would be why do they have a 1950's-style diner in Coruscant? But, the answer would be the same. It's all about how these archetypes are translated visually into the minds of the audience. There is more written about this in the book "Mythmaking", which is basically a book about the making of AOTC.

I don't see the water thing as a goof or a plot-hole, but for those who still have a problem with it, keep in mind, we're not seeing the entire planet. We've only seen the capital city in the films, a very small part of a presumably large planet. Maybe there are lakes or oceans somewhere.

First of all, I want to say that I love this. It's going to be difficult, but it's really good.

Secondly, I think we should definitely use the droid hike music from ANH. Have you thought about cutting or wiping from the ship scene to some desert documentary footage? A few sweeping shots of the arid dunes, then show our friends walking? Just an idea. I have a few documentaries on DVD that may provide the right kind of footage for this. Might open it up a little, give it a more classic feel. As long as it matches.

Haha... I can't beleive we're this deep into the movie already!

Best programs for editing dvd video , and adding audio form another source
Time
An easy way to do it would be to rip the DVD to your hard drive. Drag and drop the vob files to the video timeline in Womble Mpeg Video Wizard. Mute the video. Then take your wmv audio files and convert them to wavs using a free program like WavePad. Then go back to Womble, drag and drop your new wavs into the audio timeline, export it and burn it.

Done.

Hope this helps.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
Trooperman, come back to us. It seems as though you're becoming increasingly isolated in that distant, locked tower you call an editing room.

Quick suggestion for the sake of reviving this thread: What do you think about giving Dooku glowing red-yellow "Sith Eyes" during the final duel? I've seen people accomplish this effect.

Like this: The Evil Eye

And as of now, Dooku is the ONLY on-screen Sith apprentice that does NOT have the Sith eyes.

What do you guys think? For it or against it? Or like John Kerry, "forgainst" it?

I love it all, MTH... But these two parts make me REALLY glad we decided to do this project. Top notch. Good luck in pulling it off, TJ.

I'll just repost what I've already stated above.

I'm working in-depth on the soundtrack now. I'm drawing from a myriad of sources including John Williams material (from his filmography, nothing too recognizable), Joel McNeely's "Shadows of the Empire", ureleased tracks from the "TPM video game", "The Knights of the Old Republic 2", and unreleased material from ROTS and AOTC that was featured in "Battlefront II". I also MIGHT take some cues from the Ewoks movies soundtracks if appropriate.
