STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
From the annotated screenplay (pages 37 & 38):

"Paul Hirsch: We called the scene 'Interior - Ben's Cave,' even though it didn't really look like a cave. In the original cut of the film Ben and Luke heard the whole message first, and then they talked about Luke's father and the sword. I looked at the scene, and I said, 'George, there's something wrong here; Leia's message basically says that the whole universe is about to blow out, and we have this long dialogue between Ben and Luke about something else right after it.' So I suggested that they have the talk first and then listen to the message, and we restructured the scene that way."

Ady's version of Ben's Hut is the way it was originally written and filmed. The reason they decided to restructure it, is because someone pointed out during one of the first screenings of the first cut that they get this urgent message from Leia, the fate of the galaxy hangs in the balance, and then they sit back and decide to have a long chat. Luke tinkers with Threepio. Ben dusts off the lightsaber. Meanwhile people are dying.

That was why it was changed.

Personally, I can take the scene either way. I see the point they originally made, but Ady's version works too.

Yeah, reports of our death have been greatly exaggerated.

Sorry I haven't been too good at responding to people these last few months. Combination of technical issues and real-life stuff that had derailed us for a while. But we're getting back on track in a major way and now that Adywan's edit is finally released, we'll be going back and swapping out the footage that we've edited. It'll make a big difference in terms of continuity with the Prequels. Especially those Death Star plans. Amazing stuff that he pulled off. We all owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude for what he's achieved with his edit.

I hope you guys don't feel like we're baiting you. We're really not. I'm embarrassed when I watch the trailers and they say "2007" and now we're in 2008. I know it probably seems like it's been on again/off again, which I know is frustrating for everyone, but if you knew how much time and effort we've poured into this thing... We're just regular guys with jobs and families who do this on the side, you know?

But, take my word... We're dedicated to finishing it, and we WILL finish it. It's just a matter of time.

Thanks for your patience.

P.S. - We're still looking for qualified individuals who have the ability to connect with us via MSN Messenger. We're looking to bring someone into the fold who can viably contribute to the project, proficient in Sony Vegas, willing to rip the six films and synchronize their hard-drives with ours. Must be available weekends (nights). PM me if interested.

I just had to congratulate Adywan on finishing what I think is the most ambitious and well-made fan edit I've ever seen. You made the impossible possible. You've put ILM to shame and you've brought hope to those of us who truly believe these films CAN be fixed. Believe me, I know first hand how very hard and time-consuming it is to do this stuff. It takes an amount of dedication that many people could never appreciate unless they've spent months staring at their computer screen, poring over the footage, doing it themselves.

This project is a milestone for what can be accomplished by a fan with a home computer and has raised the bar for all of us.

So, my hat's off to you, Buddy. You've kicked the shit out of anybody else who's ever tried to do something like this. I'm sure you need a well-deserved break, but I'm definitely looking forward to whatever you decide to do next.

Congrats and thank you.

Unfortunately, Blackhawk, that's one of those things that's just not feasible for the structure of our edit. As much as I'd LOVE to keep Yoda a secret, he's in too many critical scenes in AOTC to be able to cut him out. Though I will say, I had given it a lot of thought....but regrettably, it's just not possible.

By "secrets", I guess I was mostly referring to the biggies...like Anakin = Vader, and Leia = Luke's Sister. Welcome to the boards, by the way. And the same goes to Guitarfan01.

And SkyJedi, I'm not sure why the Empire trailer skips and slows for you on YouTube. That's very strange. You're the first person to complain about it, you might want to try it again later. They might've been experiencing heavy traffic or performing maintenance or something at the time.

Yeah, the elevator scene is gone...as is that whole Jar-Jar infused "welcome" scene. If any the actors got any stiffer in that scene, they'd be dead. After watching it over and over again, trying different cuts, I finally realized there's nothing redeeming about that scene at all. It's just talking heads...over-explaining things we either already know or don't need to know. Just for the record...we're downplaying a lot of the Anakin/Obi-Wan rivalry...and it seems like that's the whole point that scene was created to convey. The point is, they should be friends. Heightens the drama in ROTS when he finally turns. Makes it more tragic. Another one of Lucas' mistakes. If Anakin hates Obi-Wan all along...then who cares when they battle it out at the end?

From Jar-Jar to the Anakin/Obi-Wan rivalry to Padme's absolutely wooden dialogue... There's nothing of value in that scene at all, IMO. So my solution was to just ditch it. Now we transition from Mace saying "I'll have Obi-Wan report to you immediately, M'Lady" to an exterior of Padme's apartment at night (stolen from ROTS). And then "You look tired..."

From there, everything we need to know is explained and it excises things like "I don't think she liked me watching her."

That's actually what I always imagined when I thought about what the Prequels would be like back in the day. I envisioned like, Medieval times...the crusades with lightsabers. I thought the Empire were the ones who represented and relied on technology and all that. Obi-Wan described a time of civility...of chivalry. What happened to that?

That's what all of us were expecting, Marvolo....Because for years Lucas was saying how the Prequels were going to be so much darker than the originals and all about betrayal and so forth...and how no one was going to like them because they were gonna be so dark...

He got the "no one liking them" part right.

Even the first two Harry Potter films had a darker tone than any of the Prequels. It's a shame.

We're gonna do everything we can, working within the limitations of the material we have, to give it that epic feel it always should have had...That's our goal anyway.

Great Stuff, ID.

The ESB trailer is still my favorite, though.

I'm curious, what are the visual transitions between the OT and the PT? Are they fades, flashes, wipes, or is that still being determined?

Hey, CC... Thanks. ESB is still my favorite too. Those two storylines just fit together so perfectly.

The transitions are going to be a mixture of fades, flashes and some brief fades to black...depending on what's appropriate for the scene. We're using transitions like a curtain on the stage. In some cases, a brief fade to black is what you need to sort of "cleanse your mental palette". In other cases, like the nightmare sequence, a flash will have a greater, more exciting impact. And in yet another case, fading from a shot of a person remembering back to the moment in time they're thinking of can have a lot of impact as well. So, it'll just depend on the circumstances.

Wipes will be limited to inter-timeframe transitions...if that makes any sense. We're talking temporal mechanics here. Haha... In other words, a wipe from an AOTC scene to another AOTC scene is fine...but wiping from AOTC to ANH or vice-versa is not fine. IMO, it's just too quick of a transition for a viewer to be able to hit the mental reset button. I think you'll probably agree.

Thanks to everyone else for all of your nice comments.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)

This is something we're doing a great deal of thinking on too over at Reborn.

It's especially difficult for us, since we have to make TPM, AOTC and ANH all match up and feel like the same movie. There's no way we're going to be able to make it perfect. We're actually considering just throwing out the color palette all together and going with something drastic...like Pathfinder or something...dark and gritty...I dunno.

It's gonna be tough. Good luck with yours.

Oh, it doesn't work anymore?

Sure. Sorry about that, Rocco. Haha...remember to breathe!

Actually though, I'm kinda embarrassed by the Jedi trailer now. It was the first thing I ever edited...and that was almost a year ago. So, I watch it now, and it's like..."ugh..."

But, I'll be cleaning those two (ESB & ROTJ) up a little for the DVD, redoing some shots and timing issues, text, music, etc. But for now...I'll re-upload the old one.

Check the link on the first post.
