STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

I’ve a bit of time available now, so I’d like to go into a couple of things thrown up recently.

Firstly, things are looking great on the WAMPA front adywan! 😃

After your ‘amish’-looking shot a couple of pages back, I was really looking forward to the next preview as you get ever-closer to it’s final, finished form with darkened bags under it’s eyes, gnarly nose, and ice-covered fur…in a way that’s somewhat similar to the original puppet -

Alt

Alt

(Note: that top shot above seems to be reversed the wrong way round, however)

Alt

So thanks for your latest sneak peak at your progress.

However, I have a couple of queries I’d like to ask at this point -

  1. Are you going for the same look, in the sense that the Wampa puppet’s horns are heavily covered by it’s hair fur? (as seen in this shot above)

  2. Are you going to make one of it’s horns slightly BROKEN OFF at the end, just like it was on the puppet too? (we can just see it sticking out in the shot above, and personally I liked that little detail…and the makers had a broken horn on Luke’s TaunTaun too, which I liked also)

Alt

…and this is just a little observation, and not at all a biggie…but as the original puppet rises up initially (as seen in this shot above), it looks like it has no arms attached to it’s shoulders I reckon! However, when looking at the original filming puppet in the shot below, it does indeed look as if it has no arms attached -

Alt

…as I say, this is no biggie, and the initial ‘shoulders’ of the wampa are only seen momentarily onscreen at the start of the second shot of it roaring (as seen at 04:03 secs near the end of this video clip) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGsAxG0r9wQ

However, I just wanted to mention that because of how it looks in that shot…that I currently like to look on this mass of fur as being somewhat like a big furry ‘mane’ which kinda overlaps it’s arms which are somewhere below…in a somewhat similar fashion to the ‘mane’ seen on this pic of X-men’s ‘Sabretooth’ character. 😃 -

Alt

Lastly, whether you wish to show a bit more of your horns compared to the original puppet’s appearance, or not…if you DO end up going for something more like the look of this fella below, then it’s certainly still a HUGE step up from the ‘lunging’ wampa shot you’re intending to replace! -

Alt

Well that’s it on the ‘wampa’ front from me, but I’ll try and get a chance to comment on a couple of other little issues raised recently, over the next couple of days.

(and please, if anyone wishes to respond to ANY of this with a one line comment…please do so WITHOUT ‘quoting’ the whole of this post as well, thanks!) 😉

What was George Lucas's worst decision with the Star Wars franchise?
Time

Another ‘bash George’ opportunity. Okay, I’ll bite. 😉

As some have said, the fact that GL has managed to make his flawed SE versions the effective ‘default’ versions of the Original Trilogy for the masses, is just the pits.

However, one of my biggest bugbears against him is his decision to do a woeful PREQUEL storyline back in 1999…instead of doing a SEQUEL trilogy first…with a much older Luke, Han, and Leia…but who all still looked in prime condition back in that year, so long after ROTJ was done with! - his damned ‘tragic fall of Anakin’ storyline could have waited, and been done anytime after that.

I’ve seen footage of Carrie being interviewed back in 1999, and she was looking really fabulous. I’ve always wished that George had continued his ‘Luke Skywalker’ storyline in some way instead of the ‘prequels’ at that point…and retrospectively, wish that even more so now, considering that Carrie was sadly unable to reach the last of the current GL-free ‘sequel’ trilogy…

To be honest, I’d find it a jarring leap to go directly from watching ROTJ (Episode 6) to then watching TFA (Episode 7) afterwards, if I was doing the chapter ‘viewing order’ - and this is due to the great leap in age difference of the characters involved at this point. But luckily for me, I’m content to watch heavily-edited versions of the Prequel Trilogy as a ‘flashback storyline’ placed inbetween the Original Trilogy and Sequel Trilogy instalments instead…as a way to ease into the ‘age’ transition much better for myself. 😃

So yeah, the fact that George DIDN’T end up doing a SEQUEL trilogy where Carrie and the gang could have featured throughout at their marvellous best (even if Harrison STILL demanded to die at some point!), is one of his worst decisions as far as I’m concerned.

Revenge of the Sith (The New Canon Cut) [ON HOLD INDEFINITELY]
Time

I’ve just read through all this recently NFBisms, and just wanted to say that I like a LOT of your ideas here. While there’s nothing we can do about the casting of Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen in the prequels, there’s certainly ways to make them appear much more bearable in these movies.

My own ideal cutlists have a LOT of their dialogue removed altogether from TPM and AOTC, and I find that helps improve their ‘likeability’ much, much better! 😃

But for Anakin’s ROTS dialogue, I reckon you’ve hit on a good, thoughtful compromise for selling GL’s intended ‘tragic’ fall of Anakin storyline in a better way than he ended up doing.

Look forward to seeing how your version hangs together overall, and I’ve sent you a PM about one of your cutlist intentions.

(by the way, I liked your new music for that Anakin/Obi-wan exchange very much…and on the strength of your various ideas here, I hope you’ll consider doing edits of TPM and AOTC one day too!)

It’s a real pity there’s such a difference in Leia’s hairstyle during that deleted scene. In fact, I like that softer, ‘ponytailed’ look on her, and wish she’d had that throughout the majority of her scenes.

(speaking of discontinuity issues, anyone that ends up dispensing with the ‘Chewie/Nurse’ scene also gets rid of the fact that she is suddenly holding the gadget in her other hand)

While I described my ideal opening scroll for ROGUE ONE on the previous page, I reckon your latest re-scoring for the main title itself is a terrific alternative to the official cue. Very nice idea indeed Jack, and I’d have been very happy to have heard that instead - and of course, I’d have been more satisfied with ANY of your title variations instead of the weak-looking version that was used.

(minor observation - I notice on your 1st video that the starfield is stationary when you showed the original title, whereas the stars are moving in this version. I can’t recall if the starfield was moving in the actual movie title, or not…but I prefer it to be a stationary backdrop like the other movies, to be honest. Your new one reminded me more of a ‘Star Trek’ movie starfield instead. Very good work overall, though)

4K restoration on Star Wars

The DP of Rogue One Greig Fraser mentions that they had a look at the 4K versions of Star Wars AND Empire in the February issue of American Cinematographer:

“With Gareth Edwards, we wanted to be attentive that the look be consistent with A New Hope, which is seared in our brains. We weren’t necessarily trying to reproduce what it actually looked like, but how we remember it — there’s a difference between reality and the remembrance of reality. Part of our research was to look at the 4K scanned versions of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. They look fantastic, but they don’t look how I remember them.”

Not sure if that means that more digital nonsense has taken place with the movies.

I’d be more likely to guess that he’s meaning the ‘colour grading’ is very different to how he remembers…

Opening Crawl for Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Time

I’ll just stick this ‘speculative’ article here - www.io9.gizmodo.com/what-the-hell-is-the-opening-crawl-for-the-last-jedi-go-1791628778

(However, I’ve no worries that the events of TFA can be ‘summarized’ in a reasonable way, before the scroll catches up to the present with Rey and Luke - in much the same way as the scroll for A NEW HOPE now retrospectively describes the events of ROGUE ONE, as well as the events currently unfolding)

I personally feel that ending on leia and watching the falcon leave is a better ending. i would rather just not see luke until TLJ

Not sure if you mean you’d end on the actual ‘group’ shot where C3PO waves, or not…but DigMod’s version ends just afterwards when the Falcon jumps to hyperspeed - it works really well, although it remains to be seen how THE LAST JEDI will continue with it’s Luke and Rey scenes.

While I love what NeverarGreat did with the TFA ending, I kinda lean to seeing the Falcon arrive at Luke’s ‘island’ in the distance before wiping to the end credits, as my preferred way to keep Luke’s appearance until the next movie.

For anyone that hasn’t seen this yet, this particular version by a guy called ‘Jyndir’ happens to be the way I’d have loved TFA to conclude, especially since it sounds so epic (except I’d include the usual end credits wipe that we normally hear) - https://vimeo.com/168168098

(apologies for this continued slight detour from your project Hal)

I don’t think it’s entirely out of place, but it doesn’t work well at the end. I made a mockup of how this scene might end differently, but it’s definitely outside the scope of this edit:

Ah, thanks for that NeverarGreat, nicely done! - over on the TFA fan edit ideas thread I described how I’d prefer to swap the ‘helicopter shot’ over with the final close-ups of Luke or Rey too, and it’s neat to see that it works perfectly. 😃

I don’t know if anyone else will end up using this particular tweak for their final TFA scene or not, but if I was to include the ‘island’ meeting sequence at all (depending on how THE LAST JEDI starts), then this is definately the way I’d choose to do it - some might prefer to have Luke as the final close-up instead of Rey, which would work well too…but I think that Rey’s earned the final shot due to this movie being about her eventful journey to this point, and the fact that I like her momentary, detemined look as the end credits begin.

Star Wars: Heir to the Force (TFA edit) <em>Released</em>
Time

Glad you stuck with your project DigMod.

I liked a lot of the various tweaks that ‘Noodle_Finger’ came up with for his TFA edit which put the ‘Starkiller’ weapon firing AFTER Han’s death (ala Hal 9000’s current project)…but even though you haven’t gone down that route, your cutlist is definately going to replace 'Noodle_Finger’s edit as my go-to version of this movie for the foreseeable future, seeing as it includes so many additional alterations that I like.

(I’m just hoping that the THE LAST JEDI follow-up ends up introducing it’s Luke/Rey ‘island’ scenes in a way that doesn’t jar with the fact that you’ve removed their initial meeting from your TFA ending)

Thanks for your efforts.

The Death Star trench run
Time

Thanks for posting that blog link Jay, as it’s the first time I’ve ever seen that early ‘matte painting’ of the original Death Star with it’s ‘weapon dish’ in the CENTRE! - I didn’t know that the guy who did the ‘computer graphic readouts’ was unfortunately given this initial version to work from…and that it was too late/costly to re-do them correctly after it was decided to MOVE the location of the 'weapon dish.

www.cinetropolis.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/star-wars-death-star-matte.jpg

That certain EXPLAINS the discrepancy concerning the look of the ‘plans’ in the original movie to me, after all these years!

The correction done by adywan for his STAR WARS REVISITED edit happened to be one of my favourite enhancements, but I see he’s planning on KEEPING the original ‘plans’ for his HD makeover now…thanks to ROGUE ONE retrospectively suggesting that the stolen ‘plans’ show an ‘earlier design’ of the Death Star to begin with.

However, I’m glad to see that this particular footage discontinuity in EPISODE IV has been smoothed out now, seeing as the original discrepancy has been made a non-issue thanks to ROGUE ONE.

So…I’m absolutely fine with the fact that there’s a short ‘jump-ahead-in-time’ between the ending of ROGUE ONE and the beginning of EPISODE IV…to allow for Vader to shuttle BACK onboard his stardestroyer before he started chasing the ‘Tantive IV’.

But it seems there were somewhat convoluted ‘reasons’ to do with WHY that ship (and the Princess) ended up in the space battle itself to begin with…

I’ve never thought it a good choice to have Poe just show up during the Resistance X-Wing scene on Takodana, so I took him out. I utilized an unused scene from the trailers, rearranged other scenes that were removed when Poe flies around blasting Ties and added a bunch of sound fx to blend it together.

Very nice clip. As I already described at length over at your fanedit(.)org thread, I liked this idea when ‘Noodle_Finger’ removed both the Poe cockpit shots from his early TFA edit too - it certainly works for anyone wishing to hold off Poe’s ‘surprise’ survival a little later until Finn spots him at the rebel base.

But I’d be content to keep his initial X-wing cockpit reveal for myself, as long as that next damned ‘whooping’ shot of his is discarded…due to the fact that Finn ‘whoops’ just before too. We already know that Poe is the fancy flyer that Finn is praising, without seeing Poe ‘whooping’ straight afterwards too! Things flow and sound great without it, I reckon.

Open Vote for the priority of Time Code Removal from Deleted Scenes for The Force Awakens

I wasn’t sure which was the best thread to stick this on, but I’ve decided on this one. Some of you may recall that a truncated version of the deleted ‘Chewie ripping an arm off’ scene was released a while back…but the whole thing has been made available to see now - complete with ‘time stamp’ of course, which I sadly feel will be the case with EVERY deleted scene going forward on future releases.

Unfortunately, it’s certainly not something I’d like to stick in my own ideal version of TFA anyway, as the way it’s been done looks kinda cheesy overall I reckon. Still, interesting to see I guess - www.io9.gizmodo.com/star-wars-sadists-can-finally-enjoy-watching-chewie-rip-1791231564

Just so everyone knows, BBC Newsnight have now issued a clarification (or ‘retraction’ if you will), saying that Disney has NOT entered into any conversations with Carrie Fisher’s estate at this time…and that any reports to the contrary are false.

(so it seems that Disney are at least leaving the family alone about any future CGI plans, for the time being)

I think it would be cool in the beginning to have the “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” then have the opening scene then this crawl/title sequence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4khRa3R27w, then cut to Jyn waking up.

Welcome aboard CBRich13.

As far as the STAR WARS movies go, I will forever recommend that newcomers to the saga watch the ORIGINAL TRILOGY first, no-matter-what…purely for the attention-grabbing opening of EPISODE IV, the likeable (main) cast of characters, the various reveals these movies include, and the all-round-fun and feelgood factor they have, to start their introduction off for them.

On the other hand, where any future ‘viewing order’ for MYSELF is concerned, I reckon I would be content enough to kick things off with a heavily-edited version of ROGUE ONE to act as a kind of ‘prologue’ movie now - mainly for the fact that it does a great job of building up the ominous power of the ‘Death Star’ first.

(It also includes that menacing Vader sequence at the end of course, which makes for an impressive introduction to his character - although I’m hoping it’s possible to trim his earlier appearances somewhat, as I know there’s certain shots/dialogue that I want to get rid of. But having only seen the movie once so far, I’ll need to study it some more to work out what suits me best)

Like THE FORCE AWAKENS before it, I’m pleased that ROGUE ONE seems to have generally re-envigorated the franchise in the eyes of general audiences overall…but there are plenty of moments in both that I’d like to restructure/or remove altogether for my own satisfaction in future - and one of the things that I recently decided I’d prefer to include in ROGUE ONE, would be that shortened, distorted version of EPISODE IV’s scroll as mentioned by CBRich13 above. It seems to be something that was first shown during the live stream from STAR WARS CELEBRATION EUROPE 2016, and I’ll include this alternative link to it which I first came across, so that the various comments below it can be read - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9BuyiFvLJA

Although I’ve seen a few interesting ‘scroll’ proposals around now, this would definately be the one that I’d have loved to have seen included to begin with…and I’m hoping that it will be available amongst the home release extras - although it probably won’t be!

As well as being a neat ‘call back’ to the original A NEW HOPE ‘scroll’ initially (complete with the usual bombastic Williams intro theme initially), the sudden interuption by desperate rebel chatter and alarm sound heard in this variation would have then given a nicely ominous tone to the start of ROGUE ONE as far as I’m concerned - and in this instance, it would have worked as a summary of the events ABOUT to be seen during the movie itself.

However, I’d ideally like to see the usual receding STAR WARS title included in this teaser’s particular ‘scroll’ example, and I’d also prefer to have the ROGUE ONE letters rotate out of the shadows WITHOUT the A STAR WARS STORY byline and border shown (in the same way they rotated in ROGUE ONE’s teaser trailer) - I reckon that would have looked and sounded a LOT better than the mediocre-looking ROGUE ONE title typeface (and bland musical cue) we ended up with. It’s not the fact that the makers decided on a ‘different’ look for the intro to this ‘standalone’ story that bothered me…it’s the fact that they came up with such a poor substitute compared to the usual titles we were used to seeing and hearing!

In addition, anyone watching the ‘follow-up’ A NEW HOPE afterwards would then have the benefit of seeing the complete, full-blown ‘scoll’ with it’s additional third paragraph which describes further info - with that in mind, I’ll also include this link to the full ‘scroll’ (at 0.57 secs) to give an idea of how it comes across now, after having seen the shortened, distorted variation beforehand - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1BUIiDvl1w

While I’d choose to restructure the beginning of the movie differently to how CBRich13 describes, this particular ‘scroll’ proposal is definately the one I’d prefer for my own ideal ROGUE ONE ‘prologue’ intro.

Rogue Zero - What was changed, reshot, etc in Rogue One?
Time

Concerning the trailer footage - I’m not sure if there’s an effort from some involved in the movie to dismiss/tell porkies about certain things that were originally filmed, or not…but from the way Gareth worded his comments in the second last paragraph mentioned in this article, it sounded to me like marketing certainly thought that some of that discarded footage was excellent… -

https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/original-rogue-one-screenplay-had-much-happier-much-different-ending-235717781.html

In the same Empire interview, Edwards talked about the fact that the movie trailers featured so much material that wasn’t in the actual finished version. “There was a bit of a process to refining the third act in terms of specific shots and moments, and certain things just fell away,” he explained. “What happened was marketing loved those shots and said, ‘Oh, we’ve got to use that.’ And you say, ‘Well, it’s not in the movie,’ and they said 'It’s okay. It’s what marketing does, we just use the best of whatever you’ve done.”
