A preview of the Rogue One score
http://www.ew.com/article/2016/12/09/rogue-one-star-wars-michael-giacchino-score?xid=entertainment-weekly_socialflow_twitter

I like it!

The score was one of the aspects I was most concerned about, especially since Giacchino ended up having so little time to come up with it. Sure, I’m gonna miss the familiar ‘main theme’ that normally accompanies the ‘scroll’…but these short snippets indicate that he’s managed to come up with something worth listening to.

Interesting ideas Dig.

To be honest, I’m intending to get RID of Anakin’s ‘Force vision’ of ‘screaming Padme’ in Ep III for my own ideal version…so that’s where I’m at with that.

However, I’ve gotten a chance to PM you some thoughts on your ‘Kylo interrogates Rey’ scene over on Fanedit(.)org now.

It’s fairly easy to fix that though and if it’s not there someone will do it 100% guaranteed, so very little to be upset about in the long run.

Oh sure, it’s possible for ‘fan editors’ to generate whatever ‘crawl’ intros they wish nowadays (along with adding the usual ‘main theme’ if they want)…and I agree that someone is bound to do so for their version of ROGUE ONE eventually.

But as far as the official versions of these ‘standalones’ go, I’ll certainly be interested to see how their new intros look and sound to kick things off.

(and at least we’ve still got ‘saga’ episodes 8 & 9 heading for the big screen, to get our fix of the usual intos once again) 😃

The thing I’m gonna miss more than anything with the removal of a ‘chapter crawl’ at the start…is the booming Williams ‘main theme’ which usually accompanies it.

I was kinda hoping that the original Williams theme would remain a mainstay of the STAR WARS spin-offs, regardless of whoever was scoring each of the ‘standalone’ movie soundtracks. It’s gonna be strange for things to kick off without hearing it, no matter how the new titles are done.

My money is on it being like the opening logo of the Clone Wars movie.

Perhaps, or they could even go down the route of adding ‘A STAR WARS STORY’ border to every ‘standalone’ main title, so that they all look similar to this - makingstarwars.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Rogue-One-A-Star-Wars-Story-logo.jpg

(although personally, I’d prefer that the STAR WARS lettering was done in the proper ‘outline’ manner, rather than being made ‘solid’ like this example)

These ‘standalones’ are gonna feel different at the end too, if we no longer get the usual upbeat Williams cue at the final ‘circular wipe’ to the end credits.

In fact, I wonder if we’ll even get the closing ‘circular wipe’ anymore?..

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

Having checked with adywan that it was something that he definately wasn’t including anymore, I’ve now got a chance to go into something I originally removed from my previous post above -

Regarding his recent clip preview, you’ll recall I described how adywan has gone on to alter his already excellent improvements for his earlier ‘workprint’ versions of the ‘Piett in the control room’ shot and ‘Vader stepping down into the control room’ shot. Well, another one that he has improved on compared to his ‘workprint’ version, is where Vader is seen walking towards the windows at the front of the bridge.

He originally put a lot of work into a ‘composite’ shot which re-used the actors from the AVENGER stardestroyer’s ‘pit crew’, as seen in this early preview pic of the sequence - orig02.deviantart.net/68ea/f/2009/173/1/1/2009_01_29_rough_sequence_by_swremixed.jpg

Now I was originally a big fan of this planned new (flipped) shot, and adywan had actually tweaked it further for his ‘workprint’ - he removed some of the ‘pit crew’ actors so that there were only 2 showing in the foreground, so that it wouldn’t seem such a re-use of the earlier footage.

However, I’m glad that he decided to discard this shot altogether in the end, and replace it with his latest shot of Vader walking towards the front of the bridge instead…as it now means that there are NO more AVENGER stardestroyer ‘pit crew’ actors seen onboard the EXECUTOR whatsoever! 😃

When I first watched the new clip, without the comparison video, I thought the third unit shot was not very well done - the motion and compositing looked unnatural and it didn’t look very detailed, as if it was out of focus.

It was only when seeing it alongside the original that I realized I had the wrong shot! The footage I had been looking at, of Vader walking away from the window and towards the camera was original footage and I suspect not much can be done for that without a complete re-shoot.

The actual third unit shot of Vader walking towards the bridge window was filmed and inserted so perfectly that I didn’t notice it was new.

Bravo!

trimboNZ, not sure why you seem to think the original Vader figure which turns to walk towards us doesn’t look good, as it certainly looks absolutely fine to me - in fact, everything about that whole shot has never looked better than it does now, I’d say.

(EDIT: it seems that adywan has responded while I typed all this out - and so I had to delete the rest of this post just in case I was revealing something I shouldn’t have…once I read what he’d said to you. I’ll need to check with him!)

Thanks again doubleofive.

I was hoping to post this before you went ahead and altered things, but it looks like I wasn’t quick enough - your comparisons comprehensively described the main majority of the fixes, but there’s a couple of additional, trivial ones that you may wish to include too…which might be of vital interest to everyone! 😃 -

 1. In your first shot of Vader talking to Piett in the bridge ‘alcove’, the single GREEN light on the right-hand side of the bridge has been turned WHITE to match the rest of the bridge shots.

 2. When Vader talks to Piett, the badge on Piett’s young lieutenant has been slightly tweaked to be at the same angle throughout his shots.

 3. And thanks to an eagle-eyed FB commenter (well done that man!), adywan has confirmed that he will also alter certain subtle ‘light reflections’ on R2’s dome, to make them match the restored GREEN interior lights throughout his scenes something like this - https://www.facebook.com/swrevisited/photos/p.1444421712240073/1444421712240073/?type=3&theater

Thanks for your usual heroic efforts to get comparison stills up for us doubleofive. It’s very much appreciated!

As well as the stand-out repositioning of Vader/Piett which I mentioned above, there’s a wealth of other incredible alterations during this clip which I’d like to praise too -

I love the additional ‘underside edge of the city’ as the Falcon evades the TIEs at the start - a small but effective addition when seen with the rest of the previous ‘underside’ footage beforehand.

The GREEN lights are an excellent change too, and really brings back how the old Falcon interior looked (as well as matching how it still looks in TFA, of course)

The shot of the Bespin planet as the Falcon and TIE’s leave it behind is exceptional now - a terrific enhancement, with just the right amount of subtle ‘lensflare’ included.

The additional ‘steam’ which swirls around as R2 falls backwards is excellent too…and that slight new ‘howl’ from Chewie is the cherry on the cake.

The wide shots of Vader on the bridge look tremendous also, with their new ‘steps’ etc. - and the new bridge crewmember at the entrance is a very welcome addition indeed.

The final shot of Vader exiting the bridge into the ‘control room’ section is one of my favourite alterations in this whole clip! - adywan actually initially added a different version of the ‘control room’ section to this shot in his ‘workprint’, and it looked equally magnificent. For instance, it’s ceiling details were different, and it had some of the pinkish/red ceiling lightstrips seen when Ozzel first makes his appearance in the movie…and it immediately brought back the look of that section’s first appearance in the movie.

…so I was surprised to see that he had gone to the effort of changing how this shot looked in the latest clip. However, I see that he’s now managed to include an additional ‘pillar’ which was seen in the earlier shots of the ‘control room’ section…which ties things in nicely too, even though we’ve lost the likes of the pinkish/red ceiling lighting now - I would have liked to have seen a hint of that lighting retained as a ‘compromise’, but I guess that adywan decided that none of it should be visible from this angle anymore. Either way, this is a phenomenal addition to tie-in the bridge with the ‘control room’ section when Vader steps down now.

The additional fleet ships and enhanced ‘glows’ on the ship engines at the end have really improved things too, but a big shout-out must go to the addition of the ‘medical bay’ in the small section on the side of the medical frigate when it first moves past us - this was always going to be a tricky portion to insert as the ship passes in the shot…and I’d have been content if it had even only been given a slight ‘glow’ to suggest some lighting from within. However, the clever solution of having an outer ‘viewport cover’ slowly opening to reveal just a subtle glimpse of the droids and other elements in the interior at this point…is pure genius!

And let’s not forget how wonderful the new re-colouration, cgi ships, and starfields look too…

It all adds up to AWESOME!

One little thing concerning C3PO too…

In addition to the neat fix where he holds up his missing leg so that it matches the previous shots…adywan has also managed to make his other leg completely SILVER during his scenes where R2 is welding it! 😃

The suddenly GOLD front ‘shin’ section during those shots always bugged me, so thanks for that too adywan!

(perhaps you could add that info. to your comparisons doubleofive, or include the close-up shot of it even?)

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

The recent new clip has some outstanding work by adywan once again. A LOT of the stuff in this sequence of the movie was unfinished on his exclusive ‘workprint’ from a few years ago, and I’ve been especially keen to see how the messed-up positioning and backgrounds featuring Vader would turn out eventually…

…as it turns out, the whole thing is an absolute triumph, and works bloody marvellously now! 😃

Whenever I used to watch this scene in it’s original editing, I used to have to ‘imagine’ that after Vader first spoke to Piett on the right-hand alcove of the EXECUTOR’s bridge…that he then watched the Falcon from that side alcove window when we returned to our first close-up of him…and that he continued to ‘speak’ to Luke from that same alcove window when we returned to him again…and that he’d only ended up moving (unseen by us) to the very front windows of the bridge before the Falcon went to hyperspace, at some point during the last moments where we reverted back to the inside of the Falcon - this was the best I could make of Vader’s original positioning for myself, but some of the backgrounds during Vader’s close-ups looked distractingly wrong, regardless…

But not anymore! - the whole of Vader’s positioning on the EXECUTOR’s bridge flows smoothly and obviously now, and soon after his initial talk with Piett, he is shown to walk directly to the front of the bridge when we next see him in this version …and that establishing shot, along with all the latest properly-matching Vader backgrounds that follow, make for some terrific consistency in the scene now.

Then there’s also the matter of Piett’s shots…as like the Vader shots, there was problems there too - as it looks like Piett nods downwards at the commander of the bridge ‘pit crew’ which seems close to him…except it shouldn’t be right beside him, as Piett is in a part of the ‘control room’ set which is supposed to be a good distance away from the bridge ‘pit’…and even worse, the commander and ‘pit crew’ do not belong to the EXECUTOR superstardestroyer in the first place…as they are the same actors who were seen earlier in the movie aboard Captain Needa’s AVENGER stardestroyer!

However, for adywan’s ‘workprint’, he’d actually re-done this differently to the final version we see now - he’d only re-used the first-half of the earlier Piett shot (which comes after Needa’s death), where he starts off saying “Alert all commands…”, and then cut to an earlier shot of the AVENGER ‘pit crew’ as we heard the words “…ready for the tractor beam” - and this was still an improvement over the original version, because at least it looked like Piett was further away from the ‘pit crew’ in the ‘control room’ section at this point…

…but it still wasn’t perfect unfortunately, as it still had those same AVENGER stardestroyer ‘pit crew’ actors in the scene…and even more disconcerting for me, the re-used, earlier shot of Piett still included Vader walking away from him and exiting the bridge in that unfinished version…which made it almost look as if Vader had suddenly ‘gone off to the loo’ at this point in the proceedings, compared to where he was meant to be…at the front of the bridge!

…of course, I shouldn’t have worried…as the scene has ended up being altered in the BEST possible way now, as far as I’m concerned - because the shot of the AVENGER ‘pit crew’ actors has been removed altogether, and although a slightly longer portion of the earlier Piett ‘control room’ shot has been re-used…it’s now changed to have him saying “Alert all commands, ready for the tractor beam”, rather than the “Alert all commands, deploy the fleet” line he said in the same shot earlier. This, combined with the fact that adywan has magically managed to REMOVE Vader walking away from Piett in the shot (and replace him with a couple of bridge crewmembers instead), give this new shot a sufficiently different look and feel to it now at this point…and it works PERFECTLY as a substitute for the original imperfect footage!

I am exceedingly impressed and happy with how this has all turned out. 😃

Indeed it is, and this is my last dip into it for now. To be specific, I’ve enjoyed the various reveal pics and trailers up till now, but want to keep the latest footage and dialogue for my initial viewing of the movie itself. But I’ll be back here after it’s release to see what everyone thought of it.

I happened to catch a comment about how this latest trailer was a bit on the ‘spoiler’-ish side, so have decided NOT to watch it. I’m sure it’s great, but I’m at the stage where I’d like to keep the majority of the movie’s footage fresh for myself this Christmas. So time to take leave of this particular thread, methinks.

(luckily, I had adywan’s latest clip tweaks to keep me going instead) 😃

Color Grading and Color Correction Article on FE
Time

TV’s Frink said:

Hey guys, we (well not me) are working on an article on FE and could use some more examples of Color Grading and Color Correction. See below for original post over there:

I’m starting to pull together some clips and resources to talk about color grading, color correction, the difference between the two, and the impact that a colorist has on the emotional tone of a film. I’ll use this stuff in the first part of the video before I go into the mechanics of how to change color.

examples of heavily graded films (intentional extreme color):
O’Brother Where Art Thou
Mad Max: Fury Road
Schindler’s List

examples of films that have been regraded after theatrical release (where “color correction” can be used for preservation purposes)
The Matrix
Lord of the Rings trilogy
The French Connection

Classic modern orange/teal examples:
Star Trek Into Darkness
Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen
The Imitation Game
Hot Tub Time Machine

More examples would be appreciated.

Quick question TVF - I’m guessing this is the article that ThrowgnCpr was recently proposing to do over there? But I can’t seem to find the post that you’ve quoted above, so can you let me know what forum section it was posted on please? Thanks.

By the way, I haven’t got enough time to rant on about my own thoughts on the wholesale re-colouration of some of my favourite movies over the years at the moment (either deliberately by certain directors, or carelessly when transferred to blu-ray)…but there’s a heap of maddening info. to be going on with in this old thread for starters - www.originaltrilogy.com/topic/Movies-with-wrong-color-grading-UPDATED/id/15873//page/1

Hmmm, all the recent official comments about the various ‘re-imagined’ elements have definately made up my mind about how I’m going to approach this upcoming show now.

Personally, I’m hoping that this latest STAR TREK ‘spin-off’ turns out to be a very watchable success…however, I’ve no doubt that it will end up having a very different look, and tone to the classic show in many ways…and despite the fact that it’s ‘supposed’ to be a ‘pre-TOS’ story/setting in the same ‘prime’ timeline as the original show, it’s looking more and more like there’s going to be a lot of ‘re-designing’ of familiar TOS elements overall - which is fair enough…but I’ve decided I’ll enjoy STAR TREK DISCOVERY a whole lot more if I look on it as being set in an ‘alternate universe/timeline’, with NO connection to the original show’s ‘prime’ universe/timeline and characters whatsoever. 😃

TNT Network 20 September 6 Star Wars Movies
Time

Y’know, as one of those who was lucky enough to experience the Original Trilogy in the heady days of their initial BIG SCREEN release, this topic reminds me that many future viewers of the STAR WARS ‘saga’ will only be getting their introduction to these movies through mere tv showings such as this…rather than being able to see them in the same ‘cinematic’ way that me and my mates were able to at the time. And that kinda saddens me.

Not only that, but…

 1. The new ‘default’ viewing order of the movies in showings like this means that newbies are no longer seeing the ‘saga’ in it’s original ‘theatrical release’ order…which results in things kicking off with bland talk of ‘trade negotiations’ and Jar Jar’s introduction, rather than with the epic ‘Blockade Runner/Stardestroyer’ opening and ‘Rebel vs Stormtrooper’ battle’ which culminates in Vader’s entrance’…

(just as George ‘intended’ them to be, I know…but still)

 1. …and even if these new viewers manage to stick with the ‘saga’ past chapters I - III in this new ‘default’ order, then they will likely only be going on to ‘experience’ the Original Trilogy’ chapters through the prism of the 2011 Blu-ray ‘special edition’ versions (and all their associated problems)

 2. …and each of these movies will be unmercifully chopped up with ads throughout these types of showings…

Hell, I’d prefer to know that these movies were only available on the likes of ‘Netflix’ in future…as at least they could be seen without the ads if nothing else!

Bah, I’m so glad I got to enjoy these movies in the full-blown, undiluted way I did, back in the day…on a HUGE screen with great (for the time) booming cinema sound…without having the Jar Jar or li’l Ani antics beforehand.
