Open Vote for the priority of Time Code Removal from Deleted Scenes for The Force Awakens
Time

I wasn’t sure which was the best thread to stick this on, but I’ve decided on this one. Some of you may recall that a truncated version of the deleted ‘Chewie ripping an arm off’ scene was released a while back…but the whole thing has been made available to see now - complete with ‘time stamp’ of course, which I sadly feel will be the case with EVERY deleted scene going forward on future releases.

Unfortunately, it’s certainly not something I’d like to stick in my own ideal version of TFA anyway, as the way it’s been done looks kinda cheesy overall I reckon. Still, interesting to see I guess - www.io9.gizmodo.com/star-wars-sadists-can-finally-enjoy-watching-chewie-rip-1791231564

Star Wars moving forward without Ms. Fisher

And if what might be regarded as unseemly haste, Disney is negotiating with the actor’s estate over her continued appearance in the franchise.

They cite no source for the claim but it’s a little worrying.

Just so everyone knows, BBC Newsnight have now issued a clarification (or ‘retraction’ if you will), saying that Disney has NOT entered into any conversations with Carrie Fisher’s estate at this time…and that any reports to the contrary are false.

(so it seems that Disney are at least leaving the family alone about any future CGI plans, for the time being)

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas thread...

CBRich13 said:

I think it would be cool in the beginning to have the “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” then have the opening scene then this crawl/title sequence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4khRa3R27w, then cut to Jyn waking up.

Welcome aboard CBRich13.

As far as the STAR WARS movies go, I will forever recommend that newcomers to the saga watch the ORIGINAL TRILOGY first, no-matter-what…purely for the attention-grabbing opening of EPISODE IV, the likeable (main) cast of characters, the various reveals these movies include, and the all-round-fun and feelgood factor they have, to start their introduction off for them.

On the other hand, where any future ‘viewing order’ for MYSELF is concerned, I reckon I would be content enough to kick things off with a heavily-edited version of ROGUE ONE to act as a kind of ‘prologue’ movie now - mainly for the fact that it does a great job of building up the ominous power of the ‘Death Star’ first.

(It also includes that menacing Vader sequence at the end of course, which makes for an impressive introduction to his character - although I’m hoping it’s possible to trim his earlier appearances somewhat, as I know there’s certain shots/dialogue that I want to get rid of. But having only seen the movie once so far, I’ll need to study it some more to work out what suits me best)

Like THE FORCE AWAKENS before it, I’m pleased that ROGUE ONE seems to have generally re-envigorated the franchise in the eyes of general audiences overall…but there are plenty of moments in both that I’d like to restructure/or remove altogether for my own satisfaction in future - and one of the things that I recently decided I’d prefer to include in ROGUE ONE, would be that shortened, distorted version of EPISODE IV’s scroll as mentioned by CBRich13 above. It seems to be something that was first shown during the live stream from STAR WARS CELEBRATION EUROPE 2016, and I’ll include this alternative link to it which I first came across, so that the various comments below it can be read - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9BuyiFvLJA

Although I’ve seen a few interesting ‘scroll’ proposals around now, this would definately be the one that I’d have loved to have seen included to begin with…and I’m hoping that it will be available amongst the home release extras - although it probably won’t be!

As well as being a neat ‘call back’ to the original A NEW HOPE ‘scroll’ initially (complete with the usual bombastic Williams intro theme initially), the sudden interuption by desperate rebel chatter and alarm sound heard in this variation would have then given a nicely ominous tone to the start of ROGUE ONE as far as I’m concerned - and in this instance, it would have worked as a summary of the events ABOUT to be seen during the movie itself.

However, I’d ideally like to see the usual receding STAR WARS title included in this teaser’s particular ‘scroll’ example, and I’d also prefer to have the ROGUE ONE letters rotate out of the shadows WITHOUT the A STAR WARS STORY byline and border shown (in the same way they rotated in ROGUE ONE’s teaser trailer) - I reckon that would have looked and sounded a LOT better than the mediocre-looking ROGUE ONE title typeface (and bland musical cue) we ended up with. It’s not the fact that the makers decided on a ‘different’ look for the intro to this ‘standalone’ story that bothered me…it’s the fact that they came up with such a poor substitute compared to the usual titles we were used to seeing and hearing!

In addition, anyone watching the ‘follow-up’ A NEW HOPE afterwards would then have the benefit of seeing the complete, full-blown ‘scoll’ with it’s additional third paragraph which describes further info - with that in mind, I’ll also include this link to the full ‘scroll’ (at 0.57 secs) to give an idea of how it comes across now, after having seen the shortened, distorted variation beforehand - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1BUIiDvl1w

While I’d choose to restructure the beginning of the movie differently to how CBRich13 describes, this particular ‘scroll’ proposal is definately the one I’d prefer for my own ideal ROGUE ONE ‘prologue’ intro.

Rogue Zero - What was changed, reshot, etc in Rogue One?
Time

Concerning the trailer footage - I’m not sure if there’s an effort from some involved in the movie to dismiss/tell porkies about certain things that were originally filmed, or not…but from the way Gareth worded his comments in the second last paragraph mentioned in this article, it sounded to me like marketing certainly thought that some of that discarded footage was excellent… -

https://uk.movies.yahoo.com/original-rogue-one-screenplay-had-much-happier-much-different-ending-235717781.html

In the same Empire interview, Edwards talked about the fact that the movie trailers featured so much material that wasn’t in the actual finished version. “There was a bit of a process to refining the third act in terms of specific shots and moments, and certain things just fell away,” he explained. “What happened was marketing loved those shots and said, ‘Oh, we’ve got to use that.’ And you say, ‘Well, it’s not in the movie,’ and they said 'It’s okay. It’s what marketing does, we just use the best of whatever you’ve done.”

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I just came across this article, so I thought I’d add it to the others recently posted here -

www.io9.gizmodo.com/gareth-edwards-says-a-4k-restoration-of-star-wars-exist-1790418019

The fact that Gareth is quoted as saying that John Knoll said that there was a brand new 4k restoration print of A New Hope, gives me some optimism…if ‘restoration’ is used in the correct sense by either Gareth or John - as far as I know, there are plenty of 4k upscales of previous 2k movies…and it could easily prove to be the case that they have just done this with the SE too. Hopefully, the usage of the word ‘restoration’ means just that, as it would point to the original movie that’s been ‘restored’.

Star Wars: Rogue One - * Non Spoiler Discussion Thread *
Time

For those of you like me who have been determinedly avoiding the ROGUE ONE ‘spoilers’ thread, I’d just like to give you a heads up about 3 recent links over there concerning the early Los Angeles world premier reactions!

Click on here if you want to find out if the general consensus of the attendees turned out to be GOOD or BAD…and don’t worry, as these are all very ‘spoiler’-free articles concerning the movie’s content overall -

www.collider.com/rogue-one-reviews-star-wars/#twitter

(But be careful with this 2nd one, as one of the most recent trailers seems to come on unexpectantly on the page - so I had to click it off quickly) -

And now that you’ve found out the early verdict, here’s another link from over there which gives just a slight tease of Giacchino’s music for this thing. - www.ew.com/article/2016/12/09/rogue-one-star-wars-michael-giacchino-score?xid=entertainment-weekly_socialflow_twitter

A preview of the Rogue One score

I like it!

The score was one of the aspects I was most concerned about, especially since Giacchino ended up having so little time to come up with it. Sure, I’m gonna miss the familiar ‘main theme’ that normally accompanies the ‘scroll’…but these short snippets indicate that he’s managed to come up with something worth listening to.

Interesting ideas Dig.

To be honest, I’m intending to get RID of Anakin’s ‘Force vision’ of ‘screaming Padme’ in Ep III for my own ideal version…so that’s where I’m at with that.

However, I’ve gotten a chance to PM you some thoughts on your ‘Kylo interrogates Rey’ scene over on Fanedit(.)org now.

It’s fairly easy to fix that though and if it’s not there someone will do it 100% guaranteed, so very little to be upset about in the long run.

Oh sure, it’s possible for ‘fan editors’ to generate whatever ‘crawl’ intros they wish nowadays (along with adding the usual ‘main theme’ if they want)…and I agree that someone is bound to do so for their version of ROGUE ONE eventually.

But as far as the official versions of these ‘standalones’ go, I’ll certainly be interested to see how their new intros look and sound to kick things off.

(and at least we’ve still got ‘saga’ episodes 8 & 9 heading for the big screen, to get our fix of the usual intos once again) 😃

The thing I’m gonna miss more than anything with the removal of a ‘chapter crawl’ at the start…is the booming Williams ‘main theme’ which usually accompanies it.

I was kinda hoping that the original Williams theme would remain a mainstay of the STAR WARS spin-offs, regardless of whoever was scoring each of the ‘standalone’ movie soundtracks. It’s gonna be strange for things to kick off without hearing it, no matter how the new titles are done.

My money is on it being like the opening logo of the Clone Wars movie.

Perhaps, or they could even go down the route of adding ‘A STAR WARS STORY’ border to every ‘standalone’ main title, so that they all look similar to this - makingstarwars.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Rogue-One-A-Star-Wars-Story-logo.jpg

(although personally, I’d prefer that the STAR WARS lettering was done in the proper ‘outline’ manner, rather than being made ‘solid’ like this example)

These ‘standalones’ are gonna feel different at the end too, if we no longer get the usual upbeat Williams cue at the final ‘circular wipe’ to the end credits.

In fact, I wonder if we’ll even get the closing ‘circular wipe’ anymore?..

STAR WARS: EP V &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - <strong>12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW</strong>
Time

Having checked with adywan that it was something that he definately wasn’t including anymore, I’ve now got a chance to go into something I originally removed from my previous post above -

Regarding his recent clip preview, you’ll recall I described how adywan has gone on to alter his already excellent improvements for his earlier ‘workprint’ versions of the ‘Piett in the control room’ shot and ‘Vader stepping down into the control room’ shot. Well, another one that he has improved on compared to his ‘workprint’ version, is where Vader is seen walking towards the windows at the front of the bridge.

He originally put a lot of work into a ‘composite’ shot which re-used the actors from the AVENGER stardestroyer’s ‘pit crew’, as seen in this early preview pic of the sequence - orig02.deviantart.net/68ea/f/2009/173/1/1/2009_01_29_rough_sequence_by_swremixed.jpg

Now I was originally a big fan of this planned new (flipped) shot, and adywan had actually tweaked it further for his ‘workprint’ - he removed some of the ‘pit crew’ actors so that there were only 2 showing in the foreground, so that it wouldn’t seem such a re-use of the earlier footage.

However, I’m glad that he decided to discard this shot altogether in the end, and replace it with his latest shot of Vader walking towards the front of the bridge instead…as it now means that there are NO more AVENGER stardestroyer ‘pit crew’ actors seen onboard the EXECUTOR whatsoever! 😃

When I first watched the new clip, without the comparison video, I thought the third unit shot was not very well done - the motion and compositing looked unnatural and it didn’t look very detailed, as if it was out of focus.

It was only when seeing it alongside the original that I realized I had the wrong shot! The footage I had been looking at, of Vader walking away from the window and towards the camera was original footage and I suspect not much can be done for that without a complete re-shoot.

The actual third unit shot of Vader walking towards the bridge window was filmed and inserted so perfectly that I didn’t notice it was new.

Bravo!

trimboNZ, not sure why you seem to think the original Vader figure which turns to walk towards us doesn’t look good, as it certainly looks absolutely fine to me - in fact, everything about that whole shot has never looked better than it does now, I’d say.

(EDIT: it seems that adywan has responded while I typed all this out - and so I had to delete the rest of this post just in case I was revealing something I shouldn’t have…once I read what he’d said to you. I’ll need to check with him!)

Thanks again doubleofive.

I was hoping to post this before you went ahead and altered things, but it looks like I wasn’t quick enough - your comparisons comprehensively described the main majority of the fixes, but there’s a couple of additional, trivial ones that you may wish to include too…which might be of vital interest to everyone! 😃 -

  1. In your first shot of Vader talking to Piett in the bridge ‘alcove’, the single GREEN light on the right-hand side of the bridge has been turned WHITE to match the rest of the bridge shots.

  2. When Vader talks to Piett, the badge on Piett’s young lieutenant has been slightly tweaked to be at the same angle throughout his shots.

  3. And thanks to an eagle-eyed FB commenter (well done that man!), adywan has confirmed that he will also alter certain subtle ‘light reflections’ on R2’s dome, to make them match the restored GREEN interior lights throughout his scenes something like this - https://www.facebook.com/swrevisited/photos/p.1444421712240073/1444421712240073/?type=3&theater
