Great stuff once again Adywan!

However, I'm so conflicted.....  The city itself looks terrific, and definately an improvement compared to the SE (and GOUT) versions.  But while the clouds look great too (and I'm sure will have a nice 'motion' to them), I really liked seeing the long 'stem' in this shot previously (which was a really great design element of the floating city), which has now been obscured by some of the new cloud pattern.  I also liked the overall composition of the previous original shots because of the 'foreground' cloud bank on the left of the frame, which gave some real depth to the scene.

I sure love the fact that the 'cloud-car' coming towards us is re-instated, as I really missed the sound of it's 'engine roar' getting louder in this shot....and I personally detested that SE 'refinery' addition in it's place.

I preferred the juxtaposition of Luke's X-wing receding away in the previous shot to this one, then the 'cloud-car' coming towards us.  So I'm very glad it's back, and  I guess we now have the EXTRA juxtaposition that comes in the shot immediately after this now, as the SE 'city fly-through' starts with a 'cloud-car' receding away again.  This whole sequence of shots will look excellent together.

The thing i was trying to get across is that in the Ot the designers and set builders did a great job making things look like they didn't come from our time and universe even with the limitations of what stuff could be used, whereas the PT many things look like we actually could have these things on your desktop PC or car etc. I don't think that any of the sets in the OT look dated at all. from a design point of view they work perfectly. you have to remember a few words that start the movie...."a long time ago......" . everything in the OT universe had that lived in look which went against the grain of usual sci-fi. The PT could have been any old or modern day sci-fi using character names from Star Wars. The PT will date a lot worse than the OT ever will.  All the buttons and switches gave the sets character which most of the PT sets sorely lacked.

I remember when i was a kid and i always wanted to redecorate the rooms in my house into sets from the movies. i actually still would love to do something like that now. But there isn't a single set piece in the whole PT (accept fro reused sets from the OT like the stardestroyer bridge or the Tantive IV etc) that i would even want to recreate. i found that kinda sad. The whole design element in the PT is very forgettable

no ships will have touch screens in the Revisited OT. From a design point of view the PT should be changed to fit in with the OT and not the other way around.

Agreed.  The Prequel's design-ethic in general was a disappointment for me in many areas, too....so I can't wait to see any slightly  more "old-school" OT moments.

And Thursday has come round again, yay!  Looking forward to the latest preview shot.  :)

I know Adywan wants to improve on this effect somewhat (and I'm sure it will be great), but I'm kinda hoping the replacement will be a similar FULL-length shot, somewhat resembling this existing movement and angle.

And thanks for that belly laugh young Docta Nick....

Just have to get this off my chest for it really is more of an 'out of the blue' comment.   Last night on Spike TV here in California they had a star wars.   I remember ignoring the prequels and caught up with A New Hope just to find myself really upset watching it since it was not Adywan's version.    I know what was changed and it really was all for the better in every way.   Again watching A New Hope, the so called Special Edition, was really upsetting I found myself yelling and arguing at the TV for no reason as well as constantly slamming my hand at my forhead out of frustration.   So today I had to watch the Revisited version and I felt all better.

Yes, it seems like Adywan's version is more DEFINATIVE than the supposedly 'definitive' version!

The majority of Star Wars fans are blissfully unaware that they are watching a 'lesser' version now, and I only wish that Adywan's version was the official one for everyone to see....  Lucky us then.

Ok this may have already been brought up if so apologies. anyway, around 4secs in to the AT AT clip Luke is running towards what appears to me to be the right rear leg of the walker. If this is correct, that leg has a central stability strut running up it that disappears on the next close up of the leg at around 8secs.

Seeing as you asked, I've had a good look at this, freeze-framing it etc., and while Luke definately seems to be running towards the AT-AT's right-rear foot initially, after another 'close-up' shot of him running a little more, it seems that the next 'close-up' of a foot is one on it's LEFT side, as Luke is behind it.  It's hard to tell if it's the front or rear left foot, but the 'strut' thing is okay either way.  The added background detail to these 'foot' close-ups are marvellous now though, and make a big improvement to the shots.

vaderios -  although that script idea was decided against in the end, I'd certainly like to see a couple of your excellent mock-ups to show how you'd portray it using Adywan's clip.

How about instead adding a snow speeder cycling around ,with a towcable, of the fallen At-At having one speeder smashed on the windshield and then the Walker falling down with some smoke and fire from its head?( im talking for the newer, ady's, additional At At not the original solo ;) )

-Angel

Not sure if a 'suicide' snowspeeder is the way to go there vaderios....  or if that would topple it that way.

StormTrooper -  Adywan recently confirmed that he intends to have a snowspeeder being seen to be 'tangling- up' the 'falling' AT-AT, before it falls, in the previous shot (before Luke runs towards the underneath of the LEFT one) where we see the 3 AT-ATs firing at the retreating Rebel troops.

InfoDroid, this radical re-structuring edit you are working on sounds terrific.

Incorporating Gaith's inspired idea of using that particular 'black and white' footage from Raider's ending is truly a terrific way to introduce things, before leading up to seeing the 'US Warehouse' once again at some point....  That will make a fantastic start to a radical edit, and I only wish the ACTUAL movie had worked this 'brief reminder' concept in too, in some way....

And the 'intercutting' of certain scenes with the 'interrogation' sequence is a great way to go too.

HeKs has also come up with some excellent ideas about just WHAT could actually be intercut at this point, and I really like them as well.  Food for thought indeed.

Whatever you decide, the concept of intercutting SOMETHING with the interrogation stuff is brilliant in itself, and this already has the makings of a fascinating edit.  The colour correction is a big bonus too.

Good luck with this project, as a heavily re-structured version will be VERY appealing.

I loved the clip Ady, but it is a little wierd that 2 At-Ats goes down in seconds, i'm assuming there is more than 3, just not visible. Maybe you could add some faint At-Ats in the background or something, like that ones you replaced, just a thought, the few that I have :/ But I really don't know what you have planned, The way I like it ;]

Don't hurt yourself and get some sleep!

Josh, Adywan has decided to stick with 5 AT-ATs as per the original number (and gave good reasons a while back), and those 3 AT-ATs shown here are seen at the very END of the battle, where the Rebel troops are now retreating.

The one on the LEFT-hand side is the one just about to be seen 'falling' in the distance in the new 'group' shot (and Adywan intends to add the encircling snowspeeder around it in the shot shown here), while the one on the RIGHT-hand side is the one that Luke is just about to rappel upwards to, and blow up.

The original 'falling' AT-AT shot occurs previous to this new one by a good length of time in the battle, when it was brought down by Wedge and Jansen, so won't seem 'weird' or 'close together', as they occur very seperately, with LOTS of intercut scenes of other events between them....

So that leaves 1 other AT-AT that may or may not have been brought down too ((unseen by us) out of the original 5, by the time of this shot shown here, so I don't know if Ady will include it or not.

Now I think we BOTH need to get some sleep, lol!

Can someone tell me why that AT-AT is falling? You see 3 AT-ATs then a shot of look coming up underneath then you see an AT-AT falling but I didnt see anything make it fall.

Adywan recently stated that he intends to add a snowpeeder encircling the left AT-AT in that first (unfinished) shot of the new clip.  I notice that during the marvellous new 'group' shot where the tiny Luke rappels upwards, that there has been a tiny snowspeeder element added that is moving away from the rear of the small 'falling' AT-AT in the distance.  I'm guessing that it is meant to be the snowspeeder that brings it down, as seen flying away after it's supposedly 'detached it's tow cable'....and the one that will be shown encircling the left AT-AT before the shots of Luke rappelling up....

I'm also guessing that the scale of the 'falling' AT-AT in the shot now is too small to show any of the tiny snowspeeder's 'tow cable' around it's legs, unless Adywan still plans to add the slightest hint of it.

Ady, are you, as Imperial Fighter suggested, adding additional elements to the falling AT-AT shot to explain why it falls (rope, laser, etc.)?

yes. you'll be seeing a snowspeeder circling the AT-AT in the wide shot of the 3 AT-AT's

Thank the Maker!

And as far as that other shot (the unfinished wide one of the 3 AT-AT's), I love the idea of yet another snowpeeder being briefly seen trying to bring down one of the other AT-AT's!  (It could be that Wedge and Jansen have come back for another crack at it, of course....)   That will be an another awesome addition Adywan.

Glad to see that one added to the collection ladyferry!

Any chance to see rebel lasers from the trenches(offscreen) to hit to the AT-AT way?

The rebels are retreating at this point so there would be no laser fire from the trenches

Just wondering if this one got lost in translation (vaderios is Greek just so everyone knows) a little....

I think he might have been referring to the 'side-onways' shot of the single falling AT-AT, rather than the unfinished shot showing the 3 AT-ATs firing at the retreating Rebels.  But he can correct me if I'm wrong.

Ady probably has tweaked it by now. I know I'm gonna get turbolasers for this BUT.....in the last clip, all wonderfull AT-AT glory and all found myself diverted from the main event (luke going up) by all the action around him, I know I could sound bitchy but it just happens.....I dunno if anyone else has had this feeling..?

I reckon it's just the 'shock of the new' JDK....

I know there's more going on during this new shot compared to the original which we've known for many years, but I reckon this new look is IMMENSE in the scheme of things now!

Once I'd given it a few plays to study all of Adywan's new tweaks, I watched it a couple of times afterwards imagining they'd always been there, and my focus definately remained on the little figure of Luke rappelling upwards, just as it had in the original shot.

It just takes a little time to get used to it, if you've been used to the original.  This shot is gonna be amazing on a big screen eventually!

Nope, that one wasn't me.  I can't recall who first mentioned that unfortunately.

I don't know what Adywan can do about that, and it wasn't really one of my biggest issues with the battle footage anyway.  To be honest, I don't know how strictly true that is, judging by some of the shadows on show during some of the oncoming AT-AT shots!

Nice speculation about how this shot might end up looking though.  I love mock-ups.  :)

Imperial Fighter

the main issue I have with that original falling walker shot is there's no life around it. There's no battlements or anything in that shot to blend in with the live action footage that preceded and followed.

I believe that during that particular falling AT-AT shot, that we wouldn't see the likes of the Rebel trenches in front of it, because of the way that it's framed.  It's a 'side-onwards' view of the AT-AT which is still out on the open snow plain (ahead of the trenches), which hasn't quite reached the trenches yet.  In a following shot of the 2 snowspeeders flying towards this same fallen AT-AT, they have travelled quite a bit before they get to it to fire upon it.  The trenches are still somewhere behind these snowpeeders.

My own main hope for the shot would be if there was a way to somewhat match the position of the legs on the  'side-onwards' falling AT-AT , to the 'close-up' of the 'tangled leg's that comes immediately beforehand.  The wrong 'knee' hits the ground first, and the rear legs are in a different position.  It's a brief shot, but it's the wrong 'knee' hitting the ground first that personally distracts me the most.  I previously suggested 'flipping' the beforehand shot into reverse to remove that problem, (although the background would probably need tweaked to match the shot of the speeder wrapping around the 'close-up' legs), if this was too problematic to amend.

I'd certainly like to see some of the tangling 'tow cable' in this shot though, as it can still be seen in an even further away shot of the same AT-AT beforehand (the birds-eye view of it).  Also, I'd have liked something like a laserblast coming out of the AT-AT at the very start of it's fall in this 'side-onwards' shot to give it a little 'something' extra here.  Perhaps some 'camera shake' as it hits the ground too.

Either that, or a passing snowspeeder coming from the left of the frame (or the hint of the underside of one passing in 'close-up' to us in the foreground top of the frame), or a laserblast or two coming from a Rebel trench Turret cannon / Round cannon from the left of the frame, or a combination of any of these.

I'm sure Adywan will give us something....ANYTHING!  :)

So, either the "newsreel" footage, which won't necessarily be newsreel footage, but a mix of historical and disturbing footage...OR we've got the twelve skeletons circling her causing her to explode...OR just a simple (yet slighly less-satisfying) edit of the original version that is somewhat alien-free.  Those are our best options so far.

Still waiting for this miracle bomb Imperial Fighter keeps threatening to drop...Better be good.  LOL!  ;-)

"I want to know....I want to know....tell me....I'm ready....I want to know! "

Hmmm, looking back at my recent posts, and catching up with those of others since I last found time, it seems some expectations have built-up a little unrealistically recently, compared to what I ACTUALLY said I hoped to show here eventually, lol.

I don't recall promising a miraculous way to perfect the end this movie....but merely hoped to describe a few possibilities on how I'd 're-arrange' / 'snip' certain things in a way that would certainly improve it for myself personally, and that some others might like too.  After all, I also said that I was ONLY going to use un-enhanced, existing footage as the basis for these possibilities....to show an alternative re-working of what's already available.  I don't claim it will be the  DEFINATIVE alternative ending, but it will be ANOTHER alternative ending to consider.  I can say that I'm very pleased with how a couple of things especially seem to have worked out with the existing footage though.  Still, there's only so much that can be done using the original material to begin with.

These descriptions WILL retain a lot of the existing footage, including the 'alien' footage (I've got plenty to say about that however), but I'm 're-ordering' certain things to give a different 'pacing' and 'juxtposition' of shots throughout the overall climax of the movie.  (I'm going to show my own preferred alternative 'intro' for the movie at the same time too)

Unfortunately, it's proving to be a very time-consuming post to get these ideas up here, as the existing footage available has proved to be complicated to re-arrange in some places, and I have to describe some MORE shots yet to doubleofive who is organising them for me.  (He has sent me about 50 so far to do with all this, the majority of which require descriptive details of some sort worked around them!)  However, I'm trying to get it all done as soon as is possible for those interersted, and should hopefully be wrapped-up within the next few days.

In the meantime, it's been of great interest to see the other ending alternatives being considered at the moment.

Oh, and that's some terrific work there, by the way HeKs.

Adywan, I hope you DO find a way to show  a further glimpse of the AT-ST, following the bottom shot shown here.  (is using an element from 'JEDI' a possibility I wonder?)

However, if you don't, and it has to go, then it would be great to get an improved 'mountainous' backdrop behind Luke to make up for it's loss....

I sure hope the AT-ST in the top shot will still be retained though....

Marvellous stuff Adywan!  I mentioned recently that I hoped we'd get to see an amended shot from the AT-AT battle soon, but I wasn't expecting a whole new 'grouped' composition like this....and especially wasn't expecting an actual preview clip!  Despite why it ended up being shown, I'll take it!!

Between the new background mountains and the more consistent spacing between the AT-ATs, this is a huge improvement overall to the ongoing battle at this point, compared to the look of the original 'Luke rappelling upwards' shot.  (and the colour correction is excellent as always too)

Roll on next Thursday's pic.

Hi, just time for a very quick update:  doubleofive has been kind enough to organise nearly 50 screenshots for me for some of the things I wanted to do with the start and end of the movie I'm going to post here.

I have a lot of little re-arrangements to sort out comments for, but have made a good start.  I will put them up as soon as I get a longer run of free time to finish them off.

What I wanted to say at this point though, was that although this concept of 'additional newsreel footage' is an interesting one, and some seem to like that idea, I personally have a totally alternative view on the whole Spalko demise thing, that wouldn't need any additional footage, and will go into that at length when I get a chance to put up the relevant comments.

Someone may be able to use something out of them at some point.

eBay isn't always the best option IMO. I've purchased multiple models throughout the years from this Hobby Link Japan, excellent service all around, as well as prices (£129). I fully recomend them so it's something you should really consider when the time comes to buying that marvelous Fine Molds MF, Ady:

They actually have al of FM models in stock right now, in case you also need the Slave 1, X-wing, TIE's, etc.

yeh i had looked at that site and it comes to approx £200 with postage to the UK. I did find one that was going for a lot less that was in the Uk but i got outbid by £2 over my max bid right at the last second today, so i'm pretty gutted. I was so close to getting it too but i didn't have any extra cash to bid higher. i haven't seen any others in the Uk on the net that is any cheaper than getting one from abroad, but that's going to be a long way off because i need to save a lot more extra cash. i think what i'm going to have to do is just keep donations open until this edit is near completion, which is something i hoped that i wouldn't have to do again. And i though this was going to be the easy movie to do. lol

cutnshut, these edits are not intended for sale, but as you can see from Adywan's recent comments, any donations towards his ongoing cause will help to keep things moving forward on these masterpieces he's working on.  He has a very ambitious workload of potential shots planned, which is great for everyone interested in these, but it's going to cost him a bit to realise them properly.  Either PM him about it, or other details are in his signature.

I'm from the U.K. too, so PM me your contact details, and I'll organise a PAL DVD-9 for you.

Nice spot on those X-wing engine glows vaderios.  One of the things I love about these edits are the consistently improved engine glows on various vehicles, so thanks for sorting that Adywan.  I've a few more bits and pieces coming up when I find the time.
