Star Wars: The Last Jedi - The Dark Cut (* unfinished project *)
Time

Ah, that explains it then. Thanks for clarifying.

Just for the record, I initially thought we were about to get an unexpected Finn death in this movie, as things were shaping up for a memorable bit of self-sacrifice on his part - but then of course he was saved at the last minute - and then I was sure that Rose’s character was getting the memorable self-sacrifice treatment instead, which I thought was really effective and poignant at this point…except the makers didn’t follow through on taking this character out either, as it turned out.

To be honest, considering the characters that we DID lose in these sequels so far, I was fine with Rose being a one-movie deal so that she would go out in such a noble way at this point…and kinda felt cheated that we were ‘played’ TWICE-in-a-row with the same kind of misdirection by the makers.

Of course that’s my ‘adult self’ talking, and I’ve no doubt that my ‘younger self’ would have been very relieved to see BOTH characters survive what ‘seemed’ to be their last moments!

In the spirit of TLJ, that’ll just be up to whomever fan edits episode XI to deal with. 😉

True Hal, but it might make for a real disconnect if Rose’s (potential) future role cant’t be easily taken out. Especially if her storyline happens to include some good scenes which no-one wants to take out anyway.

(although I’ve got some initial ideas of how I’d ideally like to re-structure THE LAST JEDI for myself, I think I’m gonna have to wait until the next instalment to see how certain characters are involved first)

Just a thought darthrush - I liked the way it seemed that Rose had given her life to save Finn when watching the movie (except it was then revealed to be yet another bit of misdirection from the makers, as she hadn’t…) - but if you make it look like she actually died in your edit, won’t that risk a continuity problem with the next sequel which she is highly likely to feature in?

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

Due to the tragic loss of a family friend recently, I was unable to see TLJ until a couple of days ago. So I’ve been avoiding this thread for quite a while now until I saw the movie for myself, and will try to catch up when I can - as I’m curious to see what everyone else thought of it all.

But there’s one particular opinion I always look forward to seeing after these movies nowadays, and he didn’t disappoint me.

…so just for the sake of anyone who hasn’t seen these yet -

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * NON SPOILER * THREAD
Time

I’m sure THE LAST JEDI is ‘beautifully made’ as George puts it, but it would be interesting to know what he thinks about the actual story direction (NuEmpire building an even bigger ‘death star’/Han and Leia estranged for years/Han’s son killing him/Luke in self-imposed exile for instance) that the Sequel Trilogy has gone down with THE FORCE AWAKENS onwards. Not that it makes any difference, but I’m just curious if there’s certain things he really disliked about where J.J. took the first Sequel’s ‘original characters’…apart from the fact he didn’t use George’s own ‘treatments’ of course!

Anyway, not too long before I get to see this latest instalment for myself. I’ve only watched the teaser trailer, and managed to avoid the majority of internet and merchandising spoilers, so the movie’s still open-ended for me, thankfully.

But while this next chapter will finally reveal who REY is related to…I’m probably even more interested to find out LUKE or LEIA’s explanation about just how come young KYLO turned out so badly adjusted that he eventually decided to murder his dad!

I’m hoping that this aspect of his background will be expanded upon in an interesting way, so that he’s not just left seeming to be an ungrateful ‘spoilt brat’ for no good reason.

Anyway, as with THE FORCE AWAKENS and ROGUE ONE, I’m sure I’ll have a blast with THE LAST JEDI when I see it for the first time on the big screen with an audience. But as with TFA and RO, I’ve no doubt that there’ll be plenty of moments that I’d rather alter or cut out when it comes to an ideal re-watch of TLJ for myself in future…so I’m keeping my expectations firmly in check. (and with that longish run-time, I’ll be going easy on the refreshments too!)

I stuck this on the SPOILER thread for the sake anyone over there who was in two minds about whether to watch the latest imminent trailer for THE LAST JEDI, or not…

But just in case there’s anyone over here tempted to peek too, just a heads-up that the director has just advised against it! Sounds like there’s probably some major plot point(s) being revealed - www.darkhorizons.com/last-jedi-director-says-avoid-the-new-trailer/

Ok, I know this is the SPOILER thread for this, but here’s some advice from the director himself for those of you who may be uncertain about whether to watch this imminent trailer for THE LAST JEDI - www.darkhorizons.com/last-jedi-director-says-avoid-the-new-trailer/

As much as I like a good trailer myself, I’ve gotten to the stage where just seeing the initial teaser is enough for me these days, as that’s all the preview footage/plot points i need beforehand. So I’ll certainly be abstaining from this one too. Just a heads up for everyone else to consider however, as perhaps this one may be giving away a major plot point or two.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

Recent family events got in the way of reporting back on my eventual viewing of your completed ESB REVISITED adywan, but I finally have the chance to say now…that it’s absolutely effin’ MAGNIFICENT! 😃

As with STAR WARS REVISITED, this was a truly spectacular ‘Special Edition’ for me throughout - and I’ll always be in awe that you ended up putting so much effort into the many enhancements that you did over these past years - just incredible really.

You’ve ended up producing something which WAAAAY exceeded my own high expectations for this edit when you started out - and out of the many suggestions (some outlandish!) by everyone, I’ve been very lucky to get the vast majority of the ones I preferred along the way.

Suffice to say that this will ALWAYS be the definitive version of the movie which I’ll want to re-watch from time to time in future - https://media.giphy.com/media/3ohuPqvqWs2pFkeure/giphy.gif

So many, many thanks for all your hard efforts and artistic endevour on this, and I look forward to seeing your eventual DISC release and ‘extras’ at some point.

Of course, your official RETURN OF THE JEDI ‘REVISITED EDITION’ thread is now open for business it seems, and the madness begins once again. 😃

I’ll pop in there with a few things now and then when time allows, but just wanted to pick up on something I’d forgotten about from way back on page 1340 -

adywan said:

The X-wing engines were originally pink in ANH. The engine colour changed when it came to ESB & ROTJ, when they became red. But now, with Rogue One using the original colour for the engines, and the possibility of me doing an edit of R1 for personal viewing, it makes sense to have the engines the same colour throughout.

Okay, I’ve already read that you’re not intending to work on the prequel trilogy anymore, and that’s understandable. I’ve no doubt that ROTJ REVISITED and ANH REVISITED HD are more than plenty to be going on with over the next few years!

However, if you ever get around to fitting in a re-cut of ROGUE ONE for yourself sometime, it would be really neat if you would consider giving us an outline of your own personal preferences for scene removals/or re-arrangements for it someday - as I’m sure a lot of us would be very interested in your choices for that. And the same goes for each of the prequels someday too…although I guess that might involve a lot of work just to list everything you had in mind!

Finally, those pink X-wing engines - Personally, I loved the look of the original RED versions you gave STAR WARS REVISITED - which closer matched what is seen in the current ESB and ROTJ movies…and although I happen to like ROGUE ONE well enough to have come up with an ideal cutlist of my own for it, I wouldn’t have minded if the makers had gone for the ‘hotter’, redder look of the ESB and ROTJ engines, rather than the ANH ones.

I guess it could have gone either way, but I’ll soon GET USED TO IT after a couple of more watches of ESB REVISITED. 😃

Thankfully, you’ve still given the Y-wing engines their original red engine colouration, which makes for a nice contrast when seen in any shots alongside the pink glow of the X-wings…UNLIKE the existing SE of ANH which made some Y-wing engines pink too!

Check out the Y-wing colours on the blu-ray example at the 0:26 secs mark in this comparison vid, for example - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_rcZNdsc30

It’s good to know that your Y-wing engines are gonna be consistently RED for these movies.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - Fan Edit Ideas thread...

OGSpark said:

Don’t know if this was mentioned before here, but ever since I had seen it at celebration, it had always intrigued me. It is the opening to the rogue one celebration panel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9BuyiFvLJA

Indeed it has OGSpark, and you may be interested to see what I originally posted about it back on page 8.

Since then, I’ve been disappointed (though not surprised) to find that it didn’t end up amongst the ROGUE ONE ‘extras’ after all…especially since I’ve thought of ANOTHER way I’d have preferred to have incorporated it for myself sometime, compared to my initial thoughts on page 8 -

My new idea concerning it was inspired after seeing a couple of ‘test’ videos that DigModiFicaTion previewed over on Fanedit(.)org, as he was working on his own RISE OF THE REBELLION:A ROGUE ONE EDIT. (Here’s this site’s details about it, by the way) -
originaltrilogy.com/topic/Rise-of-the-Rebellion-A-Rogue-One-Edit/id/55859

He was mulling over whether the usual End Credits music was the right ‘tone’ to end the movie on, considering the previous events overall. Personally, I think it worked fine seeing as the movie ended up on a mention of ‘HOPE’…but I reckon I’d prefer to end my own ideal version on a more sombre-sounding note before the usual End Credits score kicks in.

Anyway, here’s what DigMod came up with -

(ROGUE ONE / ANH end score comparison clip) - https://vimeo.com/222152616

(ANH score replacement clip - the password is fanedit.org) - https://vimeo.com/220156877

I REALLY like this use of the ANH intro. score as a way of ‘foreshadowing’ what ROGUE ONE was leading into next…and will definately use it for my own version someday. The only alteration I would make to this for myself…is that once the ANH music reaches the 0:18 mark on DigMod’s clip (where we see the credit Director of Photograph GREIG FRASER, ASC, ACS begin to fade out), I would THEN introduce the usual ‘jaunty’ End Credits music - the reason being that I don’t want to hear TOO much of ANH’s intro. score beforehand, if I choose to watch it immediately after ROGUE ONE!

So thanks very much DigMod for that inspired notion! 😃

However, had the ‘Celebration Panel’ scroll been available on the extras, I’d have liked to incorporate it as a way to FINISH the movie instead!

Here’s a better version of it where you can hear the final notes much clearer without the crowd whooping - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgsbzxSIPrU

It would certainly have given me the more sombre kind of ‘foreshadowing’ tone I’m after to end the movie on…and here’s how I’d have included it -

…the movie ends, and the Tantive IV jumps to hyperspace…then the circular ‘iris’ wipes to the ‘Celebration Panel’ scroll (so that it begins at the 0:49 mark on the video I linked to above), until it ends just before the word DECEMBER appears)*…and then we get a SECOND circular ‘iris’ wipe as the usual END CREDITS and music begin. 😃

(alternatively…as above, except we could just fade to black at the end of the oncoming scroll at the 01:18 mark in the video, so that we just hear those final notes without seeing those particular ROGUE ONE A Star Wars Story titles…and THEN begin the usual END CREDITS and music)

But as we DIDN’T get that ‘Celebration Panel’ scroll amongst the ‘extras’ after all, DigMod’s neat suggestion will do me just fine instead.

Ronster said:

Well the only thing that really draws my attention is we do hear the gun being fired… after the bar man says "no blasters’

And we do not see it so I just came to that conclusion that the laser was missing in my head.

Due to the quick intercutting of the shots Ronster, the SOUND of the blaster doesn’t change the way I normally like to view this scene whatsoever.

In very quick succession, we first hear the lightsaber activate…quickly followed by the bartender yelling “No blasters, no blasters!” at the very same time as we briefly see Dr. Evazan’s gun raised in close-up…quickly followed by the blaster sound at the very same time we see Obi-wan swiping Dr. Evazan’s arm…lastly followed by the sound of the 2nd swipe towards Ponda Baba…

Therefore I just choose to explain the ‘missing’ laserbolt away like this - we don’t see it in the momentary, close-up shot of the raised blaster…because we DON’T see the front barrel of it in the shot anyway - the very front of the blaster is slightly offscreen when that shot is ‘paused’…

…and on top of this, it ISN’T yet heard to fire during that shot either. And then when we DO hear it fire in the following shot where Obi-wan has swiped at Dr. Evezan, the blaster happens to be unseen and offscreen now…

So I just like to believe that the blaster’s unseen laserbolt ended up missing Obi-wan somewhere offscreen…due to Dr. Evazan’s arm being struck and dismembered at this particular instant, causing the angle of his blaster to be suddenly off-kilter due to that.

Anyway, here’s the existing clip for reference - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfy5Esue_ls

I think that because we don’t actually see the gun fired although there is footage for it… Basically Obi-wan deflects the doctors Laser at Walrus Man then cut’s off the doctors hand. Thus Killing Walrus and seriously maiming the Doctor who does not like anyone.

The Laser being deflected is missing even though we hear the gun go off… That is what the first swipe is for. They just forgot to rotoscope the Laser in and bouncing off. This is also why Luke trains to deflect blasters.

Any good?

Ronster said:

They chopped off the Walrus head too! there is a still for it. there must have been many permutations for the sequence but the lightsaber is no where near the Walrus.

Ronster, that was an interesting notion about Dr. Evazan’s laserbolt being deflected into Ponda Baba, and if that works for you, then great.

But it’s not the way I personally choose to view the inconclusive footage. Due to the positioning of all the actors, I’ve always preferred to imagine that Obi-wan makes his 1st swipe on Dr. Evazan’s RIGHT arm, as he raises his blaster…and then takes his 2nd swipe at Ponda Baba’s RIGHT arm too, because he then started to raise his blaster also.

And because various behind-the-scenes pics do confirm that Ponda Baba was originally given a blaster too (not seen onscreen), it didn’t matter to me WHICH character’s arm adywan decided to show as dismembered…as I would just imagine the OTHER arm (and blaster) had also fallen on the cantina floor somewhere offscreen.

However, I’m ALSO okay with the notion that Ponda Baba might have actually got sliced in HALF by Obi-wan’s swipe at him…as I can still imagine that his RIGHT arm was cut off at the same time if he did indeed do that! - so due to the way the footage is filmed and edited, EITHER of these scenarios work fine for me when I watch the movie.

Along with George’s decision to ultimately go with the ‘hairy hand’ prop instead of the ‘flipper’, the behind-the-scenes pics of a Ponda Baba ‘decapitated head prop’ show just how much revision was involved in this scene overall - but the REALLY head-scratching aspect for me is the fact that the Ponda Baba actor has his LEFT arm missing in this particular behind-the-scenes pic - abload.de/img/ponda2apjc2.jpg

…when in fact we end up seeing a prop of Ponda Baba’s RIGHT arm in the final shot! - vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/f/f1/Ponda_arm.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20070326183107&path-prefix=nl

(However, while it was interesting to see Ponda Baba with his ‘hairy hand’ attached in ROGUE ONE, I reckon I’d prefer to remove that ‘coincidental cameo’ of those guys from my own ideal cutlist of the movie) 😃 - https://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/a/a2/PondaEvazan.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20170402092052

Pleased to hear that Ewan may get another crack at the character, and it might be kinda neat to see that kind of storyline play out in a ‘Star Warsy’ setting.

It got me thinking about some of the stuff referenced in ANH that the makers could end up including in this prequel movie, if it’s solely set on Tattooine -

TUSKEN RAIDERS! - Older Ben is aware of the Sand People’s ways - so some of them might feature giving him a hard time in some way as he establishes his homestead…before he ends up giving them a lesson in neighbourly manners.

KRAYT DRAGON! - Older Ben knows how to mimic one, so it (or they?) might feature in some way too. (plenty of scope for the makers to include some sort of CGI’d monster shenanigans, but will they remix it again? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSDgBbX1XTY)

JAWAS! - I’ll be surprised if we don’t see at least one of the little rascals in this.

MOS EISLEY! - Older Ben is aware it’s a hive of scum and villainy - so it might feature as a setting for various hi-jinks he’s previously been involved in there (this could easily be a backdrop for him sorting out a local scumbag or two who are harassing the lives of some locals he defends - the villains of the peace being some of Jabba’s associates perhaps?)

THE LOCAL CRIMELORD, JABBA HIMSELF! - Nothing to stop the makers actually including the big guy somewhere in this, if the storyline DOES involve Kenobi tackling some of his associates along the way. (the fact that the cocky pilot he commissioned to fly him and Luke to safety at a future date ALSO turned out to have had dealings with Jabba too, is merely a ‘coincidence’ that is never mentioned onscreen in ANH. Never tell me the odds!) However, although we’ve previously focused on Jabba in this saga, the makers could involve a DIFFERENT ‘Hutt’ as a protagonist in this I guess.

THE CANTINA! - Older Ben seems to know his way around the place, and certainly seemed comfortable enough at the club bar featured in the (shudder) AOTC prequel. So the makers could easily have Kenobi frequenting the same one with a whole new slew of CGI’d ne’er-do-wells amongst the regulars. (just hope whatever band is booked sounds good…)

ANAKIN’S LIGHTSABER! - If we see Kenobi in his abode during this at some point, then a wistful look at it is obligotary before he stashes it back in his trunk.

QUI-GON’S ‘FORCE GHOST’! - a possible brief appearance of Liam Neeson might be in order to show he carried out Yoda’s wishes for his continued training. (or at least, a ‘voiceover’)

TATTOOINE’S TWIN SUNS! - Surely we’re bound to get a decent sunset or sunrise shot featuring them during this, no matter what.

Finally, Kenobi’s gotta get around the area somehow. While I’d be happy to have him be seen wandering on foot into whatever adventure he finds himself in, we might see the return of an EOPIE steed - let’s just hope it’s not as ill-mannered as the one seen at the PHANTOM MENACE pod race! On the other hand he may end up with a SPEEDER of some sort in this…and it just ended up as an offscreen rusting pile of junk hidden behind his abode, by the time Luke turned up in his.

Time will tell, but there’s certainly scope for quite a few…er…‘callbacks’ in this.

Indeed it has AS, and it’s because Obi-Wan actually cuts Evazan’s arm off due to him pulling out a blaster in the original footage.

Due to various unavoidable reasons adywan, I STILL haven’t been able to watch this yet since it’s release, dammit! 😦

My ESB:R download is locked and ready to go…but due to work and family matters, it will need to wait yet ANOTHER bleedin’ day until I can get peace to transport myself to a galaxy far, far away for a couple of hours once again…

I can’t wait to see the various additions that were missing from the still-in-progress ‘workprint’ you sent me years ago, and I’ll get back with some thoughts when I’ve finally seen it all. I’ve not yet read any of the comments here since I last posted a couple of days ago, but will eventually catch up on all those too.

I’m sure that your efforts will have amazed a lot of fans since it’s release…but it won’t be until the extensive ‘visual comparison guide’ is eventually revealed that everyone will be able to witness the true firepower of this fully armed and operational fan edit!

I am so looking forward to seeing how it all came together finally.

(However I’m peeved that with one thing and another, that I was never able to get certain ‘Dagobah’ suggestions to you that I had extensively ‘saved to draft’ before the OT site changes a good while back. All my detailed descriptions and many screenshots (66 in total!) were completely lost just before I got a chance to post them all here, if you recall. It was little things that hadn’t been brought up by anyone before, but I’ve got my fingers crossed that you will have picked up on a paricular inconsistency that bugged me most to do with all that, as I know it would have been a very easy fix for your capabilities. Either way, I really hope that Jay can re-instate the very helpful ‘save to draft’ feature at some point, to make things much easier for some of the eventual ROTJ:R suggestions that are gonna come your way…) 😃
