Automating the creation of travelling mattes?
Time
Can someone recommend a clean, workable method for creating travelling mattes without having to roto every frame in a sequence by hand? Specifically, I've got access to a desk of After Effects, as well as Vegas. Both have nice tools for integrating elements which already have mattes, and I'm used to creating and rendering in layers, but have no experience reverse engineering a shot in this manner. Specifically I'm working on the opening three shots of ANH, and would like to isolate planet, moons, ships, and stars for various fixes. Thoughts?

BLADE RUNNER: The Unauthorized OFF-WORLD Box Set (Released)
Time
I was pretty sure I saw something about the number of discs when I started poking around after seeing the DH article. I may have simply misread one of the various reports, combining it with memories of what Scott said the LAST time he talked about a DVD release (at that time, before temporarily lapsing into chaos again, he said they were about to release a three disc box set with a new cut of the film). Anyways, it's ALL good news, except of course that it means I'm probably going to have to start saving my pennies NOW for this thing

Edit-- BOTH Blu-Ray and HD-DVD? That's a little weird, isn't it? I would have thought that by that time one format would have demonstrated a clear lead on the other.

BBest Compression Technique for Images Sequence?
Time
Thanks again, yeah, the framerate flag business suddenly dawned on me last night while I was struggling with it can't believe I forgot that. As far as the crap-tastic m2v, it seems to have been something that Vegas was doing with a VBR file. Changed luminance or colour space when it rendered? Don't ask me, I don't have any clue why it should screw with the output like that. All I know is that the template produced crappy output every time. But setting it up manually instead of using one of the templates, and using CBR@9800 fixed it beautifully. Thanks again Moth3r (oh, yeah, and thanks for such great transfers too, I've been basing my rotoscope work on what I've been able to see in your ANH transfer )

BBest Compression Technique for Images Sequence?
Time
Thanks, Moth3r. Yeah, that's one of the reasons I went with TAGA (would have preffered RLA or something that makes more reasonable file sizes, but there's not as much support for them in NLEs); the other being that I can just paint directly on each frame in Photoshop. Bitrate shouldn't be an issue; I'm encoding VBR with a max of 9800, and an average of 6000. Well, the other possible problem is that Vegas is using MainConcept for it's MPEG2 encoding, and while it's certainly common enough, it's hardly the best encoder around, but it hasn't acted like this before so I was thinking maybe it handled DV better than a still sequence. Maybe something that can do more than 2 pass-encoding, or maybe using CBR instead of VBR? ANy opinions?

A second question regarding the rip from Virtualdub to those who'd know...VDub has identified the video on the ANH official disc as being 23.976 fps, and played at that framerate it's fine in Vegas, but GSpot, MPeg Validator, and MpegPRoperties all say it's 29.97. What's with the discrepancy, and am I actually loosing 6 fps of extra data? Anyone had this happen?

BBest Compression Technique for Images Sequence?

Hey, hoping some people who hang around might chime in with some opinions. I'm working on some minor restorations to ANH, and decided for what I wanted to do, the best thing was to rip the DVD VOBs to M2V, then save the shots I'm working on as a Targa sequence, with some basic HSV boosts in VirtualDub. On top of that I've rotoscoped some new elements, and created some mattes I'm using to adjust regions within the shot. I'm compositing and colour correcting it all in Vegas as it's what I'm most familiar with; though I do have access to a Combustion desk, as well as TMPGEnc. The problem is, what Vegas spits out as an Mpeg file is garbage - over saturated, with unacceptable artifacting. Can anyone recommend a workflow which achieves a decent quality MPEG2 encode from a still sequence?

Sorry, can't help there. But I'm excited to see this project! I'm another one who lived with the LP always playing on my little record player as a kid, and I always loved the differences in some of the takes used for Empire and Jedi particularly. I'm hoping you'll include the complete unaltered LP audio as an extra on the disc, and maybe a slide-show of the book pages? Anyways, I hope this goes out as a wide release so that those of us without newsgroup access get a shot at it.

BLADE RUNNER: The Unauthorized OFF-WORLD Box Set (Released)

Next year, MBJ Didn't see this flipping through this post, but kinda on topic...Just saw over at DarkHorizons that they've FINALLY worked out the copyright mess that BR has been in for so damn long, and Scott is cutting a brand new version. Which will be released thatrically next year, along with the oft-promised three-disc set containing ALL of the previous cuts, plus this new one. Hopefully they've not been shortsighted enough to only prepare an MPEG2 version, but have also got something for HD as well.

Thanks, Mike...I think that's where I was headed finally (roto over properly sized LD footage, then composite those new bolts on the DVD frames). Although I've noticed that whatever happened to the glow, be it Lowry or something else entirely, doesn't seem to have simply eliminated the outer parts of the glow optical, as some of what look like the cores of the DVD bolts are definetly off-center to the LD footage. And I thought the problem started with the DVDs, but going back to the Revax "?" SE transfers, the problem was there in the 1997 release (although not QUITE as badly mangled). I know it's been said before, but what a colossal mess they made of that shot.
Oh, and cbaka, just to reiterate for, I dunno, probably the thousandth time, Legacy WILL NOT BE RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC IN ANY WAY. Verta's documenting his restoration and FX fixes only as a personal record, and as a guide for anyone else who wants to embark on a similar effort. If you want this version, you're sadly going to have to recreate it yourself.

..what the...? Er, okay, anyhoo, empty post aside.

Mike, any words of wisdom (or, hey a release of the plugin you wrote ) on your technique for repainting the laser glows in the opening shot? I've tried a number of methods, from a 3D solution via a Maya shader (totally unsatisfying, but maybe a custom Mental Ray camera shader....dunno), to a series of gausian blurs applied frame by frame in PS, but nothing is quite right, The PS solution came closest to the right look, but looses the taper of the bolt and glow once you make the blur the appropriate size. Any specifics you can share?

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
It looks to me from reading the various postings around the net that what we're going to see is in fact the video masters that the definitive editions were struck from. There's no reason at all that LFL would spend the money and manpower to restore them any further, as Lucas obviously feels that they are mere curiosities which some fans would like to have legally. What this DOES seem to mean, is that something like OCPMovie's classic editions (just, oh, I don't know, for example ) would benefit from better source material for the inserts (masters straight to MPEG2, not having been converted to LD format, recaptured, and then encoded). I have a feeling this site and a number of the projects are still going to be valid come September after all.

Info: Subtitle font used in Star Wars (ANH, ROTJ)

On the same note, is there a consenus on the colour of both "A long time ago", and the original "Lucasfilm Limited" title cards? Not the awful respective metalized, lens flare, shiny pretty distracting thing, and the aquamaine of the 2005 discs, but the theatrical prints of ANH. I've got pretty close to nailing the shape, spacing, and the timing of the fade in/out on these. But the variety in the available LD rips has left me bewildered as to the proper colours.

Thanks, ADigitalMan...that was the combination for the menu all right. I've added chapter menus, am mixing a version of the official commentary track (finding out just how many little tiny trims and stretches you and Editous made to the movie ), and am thinking of doing a music-only track and adding that to the disc as well...hey, if you've got the disc real estate available... This is definitly gonna be replacing my 2004 official product, thanks to both of you for producing such a great disc!

As far as the Heresy mix goes, anyone have any specific thoughts for additions? I love this idea, and seeing as we all seem to be MST3K fans, I combed through some episodes and found a couple of lines which might be useful (although maybe this should be a separate topic if people are interested in continuing it?):

Space Mutiny - "Graphics by Kenner" "Special Effects by Industrial Light and Morons"

Being From Another Planet - "THX!"

Cave Dwellers - "Oh no! They've jumped into a Kurosawa film!"

Laserblast - "Mark Hammil in 'Falling Down'."

Quest of the Delta Knights - "Maybe it's your father." "...Luke"

Yeah, somehow doing a running collection of audio to drop into the heresy mix would be great...the whole track is probably too big for anyone to host, so I'm thinking maybe posting individual clips with timecode?
Hey, ADigitalMan, any way you could shed some light on where you got the SW IV logo for the menu, as well as your fonts? I've had so many problems with burning the DL version that I've decided to go into either TMPGenc or DDVRemake and reauthor the whole disc, and would like to recreate your opening menu as best I can.
Oh, and as to why I'd prefer not to use Shrink to make a SL version, Shrink works fast, but it's not the best encoder around. I'm really hoping to produce the highest quality version possible of this terrific edit to replace my Offical DVD.

Hey, a question to those who've grabbed this from MySpleen. Have any of you been able to successfully burn this to DL DVD? It plays fine off the HD, and DVDShrink can make a SL version. But I've burned 3 coasters on this which freeze about half-way through, and Shrink cannot produce a working DL version (in "No COmpression" mode). I've tried RecordNow Deluxe 7.3, and it complains that there's a problem with the format of the Video_TS folder, and refuses to burn (RN apparently will only burn the most compliant discs to maximize compatibility, that's why I went with it). I tried CopytoDVD, and NTI DVD Burner as well. Anyone have burning strategies that work with the MySpleen version, or maybe there's a problem with the files in the MS upload? Anyone? Anyone?

I'm sorry, but I must say this... screw this forum, and screw the entertainment industry
Time
"ANH and ESB looked just like my VHS tapes color wise, though, so I don't see the problem. ".

Look at the opening sequence of ANH. The thing is soooo badly desaturated. The ISDs lasers have NO glow anymore, neither do the T4s engines. The matte painging is dull and lifeless. And then, a few shots later, the red levels are boosted off the map. This is a poor, poor preparation of the video material.

And the other thing to keep in mind about kids today versus those of us who saw the OT theatrically, is that the market SINCE SW is completly oversaturated with action/adventure/sci-fi blockbusters, whereas the world of the '70s was a little different. SW was UNIQUE when it arrived, and the timing of those movies has a LOT to do with their success and indelibility.
