STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>
Time
Hmmmm....I'm going to have to disagree with everyone and say I think the sequence is either a little long, or a little out of place. It's also a little too close to much of the RotJ DS stuff (and personally, I think the whole DS2 thing was pushing the movies into redundancy a little). The other problem is that you've used a HUGE amount of the ESB star destoyer fleet footage, which is going to feel re-used if and when you come to do that film, flopped, cropped, and repositioned though it may be. Also, I kinda think the full-on, ass-kicking ESB version of the Imperial March doesn't really belong here, as it takes away from it's introduction in ESB, and the re-introduction of Vader in that movie. I can certainly see using a phrase from it being quoted somewhere in the film, but not the whole march. I dunno, the whole thing about SW:ANH, is that it was ruthlessly edited; fast paced cuts, only as many shots as were needed to move the story along, very tight and economical. As the budget got bigger, and ILM got better at turning shots out over the series, the style definetly changed a bit but I think it's largely veering away from that approach that makes the official SE stuff stand out so badly in ANH. I see where you're going with this sequence, but I for one think it needs to be pared down a bit.

Info: Auto-correction from SE colours to GOUT colours (lots of information)
Time
Well, the PAL (fullscreen?) histograms are posted a page or so back. I think someone would need to do an NTSC version as well, though, no? And do those histograms do anything to the purely SE shots in the film, or do they simply ignore them? It is intriguing though, the idea that you could package everything someone would need to DIY colour correct the 2004 DVDs into something resembling the fillms, and in only a few hundred k.

Hey, Adywan, for some inspiration on the colour correction, have a peek (if you haven't yet) at the thread about automatically using the GOUT to do colour correction. There's a fantastic plugin for AviSynth called ColorLike which will match histograms between two video sources, and has been shown to work very very well between the LD footage and the 2004 SEs.

<<Groan...>> I guess it's time to learn AviSynth at last...That looks very promising, I wonder if there's a way to specify the colour curves you want to use for particular shots where colorlike's solution doesn't look right, while letting the filter do everything else on auto. Or if it's possible to use what the filter spits out as a starting point, but tweak along the way as neccessary.

Episode I: PaulisDead2221's Edit (* unfinished project *)
Time
Just browsing through this thread, and it looks like you might have a very cool edit on your hands here. A thought for the Jedi entering the hangar sequence you posted; rip the music channels off the RotS disc for the begining of the Battle of Coruscant - there's your drumroll for the buildup to the action sequence. It's simple, it's JW, it ties nicely with RotS and the Jedi about to open a can o' whoop ass on some droids, and builds tension nicely from virtually nothing. There are mp3s of it floating around, but it probably would make more sense to rip it to a wav for best quality.

That example seems pretty harsh, like there's a sudden drop off in the focal range, although it could just be the small image playing tricks on me (cool looking shot though, please post if you find the link, Editous!). I'm thinking of something much much more subtle and also occurring more gradually. From that POV shot, I'm guessing we're supposed to be looking out over at least a couple hundred meters, to maybe a kilometer? While technically there wouldn't be in space, I think instinctively the brain is going to be expecting a bit of softening of the details the further away you look. I don't know though, almost anything done to the shot at this point I think is going to look faked in post. Regardless, it might be tricky...something like using a gradient to modify the effect of a soften filter, and then tracked to the diving motion of the shot?
You know, looking at it again, I think my biggest problem with that shot is actually the laser bolts. They're fairly hard-edged, and LOOK like seaprate elemets.

Approaches to reduce telecine wobble?
Time
Being about to start on an anamorphic version of the GOUTs, I thought I'd ask if anyone has any ideas about reducing the telecine wobble so badly apparent in SW. I would think deshaker would try to cancel out pretty much any camera movement, and I haven't had any luck finding resources addressing this, except a couple of references to Mokey as a possible tool. Any thoughts, gentlemen?

I would stay away from speeding the surface shots up - miniature photography sped up tends to look LESS convincing, not more. I also would be surprised if distorting the frame will work, I think it's more likely that what you'll get is something that looks like it's had a fake perspective imposed on it. You might try faking a depth of field effect on the footage though. I think the big problem with it as it exists in the film is that it's mostly in sharp focus - it's obvious that it's all very close to the camera. Soften the focus a little as you move deeper into the BG on that footage, and I think you might improve it.

The thing to keep in mind about tkeeping he "Darth" thing is that the whole defence of telling Luke that his father is dead is that to Obi-Wan, he DID die when he became Darth Vader - for him, Anakin is no more, and, incidentally, it's the explanation of why Luke is able to succeed in rescuing his father where Obi-Wan failed; Luke still believes his father is in there somewhere. Unless you were kidding, Eros?

Eh...that was the only problem I had with ADMs cut. The sequence is totally out of place dropped into ANH; from a technical POV, the film stock looks different, the film has a different colour pallette, it's a different costume, and a totaly different read from JEJs ANH performance (it's a weird, weird reading of that dialogue, and McDiarmid seems to be half asleep). On a story level, it's a bizzarre, languid sequence tacked onto the jubilant, upbeat, and anive finale of ANH, and it spoils Vader and the Executor's reveal for ESB.

What exactly do you want to do for the DS schematic? rotating 3D wireframe as in Jedi and AotC, or a red wireframe scematic on the viewscreen? Interior with the reactor core, or just surface detail? It's not complicated to produce the assets, and I too think the SciFi 3D meshes should be adequate for your purposes here (just either render as wireframe, or use a wireframe material if you'll be working in Max, you can either produce the colour and glow in Max at render time, or, as I prefer to do, do it all in post in Vegas...just remember to include an alpha channel when you render).

Info Wanted: What is generally considered the best fan preservation version of the OT?
Time
Only problem really with OCP's is that there are glaring, distracting transparency issues with his compositing. However, they're probably my favorite to watch, because, colour problems and all, the DVD footage is still the best looking source around. After that, Moth3r's and ISO's discs run good second and third place for me.

BFI preserving OOT!!
Time
"Lucasfilm sqaushed the AFI's plan to show an original print of Episode IV several years back."

I believe the issue actually was that the AFI was asking LFL for a print of the films to borrow for exhibition, as they didn't posses one themselves. This was for the showing of the most important films of the '70s, right? They asked for original theatrical releases, and LFL declined, saying they'd be happy to provide the SEs. AFI then decided (demonstrating magnificent integrity) to tell LFL where they could stick the 1997 SE versions, and didn't show the films at all. Again, this is as I remember the incident shaking down. It would be a different story if they could get their hands on, and assemble, their own prints, wouldn't it?

Automating the creation of travelling mattes?
Time
Man I'm slow sometimes...thanks for the suggestion; I knew Vegas had to have something like this in there, but was looking at the plug-in chains instead of pan and crop. I was hoping for something maybe luminance-based, but this a great deal faster solution than what I was doing, even if it does require a certain amount of tweaking the mask as I go. Thanks again, Moth3r!
