Can't answer your other questions but as far as I know, in the "Frames" books, the shots are taken directly from the Blu-Ray masters.

Not necessarily - they could have just got those frames from a different 35mm source.

The HDTV source is of high enough quality, that that would be just pointless work to do that, so yeah, the whole shots will be replaced.
Yeah, it's terrible. You don't even have the freedom to go and see a silent black and white movie in the cinema. It's all those damned color talkies nowadays.
And don't get me started on music, you don't even have the freedom to buy your music on a phonograph cylinder any more, it's all on those internets now.

On the bright side, I'm not actually seeing that many "get despecializized instead" comments but there are tons (actually vast majority) of comments saying that if this is the SE, they're not interested - far more so than when the BDs came out four years ago, so that sends the right kind of message and shows that the public opinion has shifted and our campaign to make people informed about the issue has worked.

Not to derail the thread, but I really liked the colors of Terminator Salvation and if I recall, they actually achieved those colors photo-chemically, not in digital grading.
And to get back on topic, Mike, I don't know if the color-space conversion has something to do with it, but in many of your videos, including this one, I feel like in your restoration the reds are a bit biased towards magenta/purple - in this example, the colors in the blu-ray are undeniably horrible, mainly due to over-saturation (yeah, the pink highlights are a thing to behold), but I just feel like the hue of the red stripe on the x-wing is closer a true red (albeit extremely boosted and over-saturated) on the BD.

Yeah, unfortunately, the have been no updates on progress lately because there has been no progress. For the past two months I've been juggling two jobs and have generally been really busy.
Things should hopefully improve in the coming weeks though.
Yeah, I've done this kind of thing many times in despecialized. It's a good way to unify the colors when putting two or more different sources together in one frame but image registration has always been one of the biggest problems I had when doing despecialized.
So there's a new version of the mono mix coming soon? Should I tell the guys working on the Despecialized BD to wait for it?
That might be a problem - the wowow has the least amount of cropping at the top out of all the sources I've seen, so in order to remove that logo, you'd have to zoom it in at least a little bit.

I patched it up with the BD's luma. I had to de-noise and sharpen the BD footage and then I used an old 720p HDTV transfer I had burned on DVD for the chroma info on the patched up area, because it was the only source I had that had similar colors to the WOWOW and was less cropped on the right side.
It's very nice. I just don't understand why put all this effort into the 8mm print (which is to receive a better scan anyway), when you have the 35mm scans and from what I've seen of them, they could be used for a grindhouse release with much better results and the same amount of effort - or am I wrong about that?
