Harmy's STAR WARS TRILOGY "Partly Despecialized Edition" HD. !!! These version are now obsolete - Look for Despecialized Editions instead!!!
Time

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

As to the CGI, it was quite a painful decision to leave some of it in but those shots are amongst the worst looking (image quality vice) in GOUT.

For the Dewback scene with the Stormies I had to leave a bit of the SG shot to make it fit the original sound. The only other options would have been to either slow down the camera pan, which would create an annoying jitter or put in the shot from GOUT, which is horrid and containes the infamous 4 eyed stormtrooper:

And this shot just looks plain awful in GOUT (and it only gets worse in motion, especially when blown up to 1080p and shown on a big HDTV and believe me, I tried...):

So there you go, I'm not 100% happy with leaving the SE shots in but it seemed like the lesser evil.

Lord of the Rings - TTT and ROTK "REFORGED" edit... (* cancelled project * - drive failure)
Time

Well, I'll have yet to see about that. I'm still definitely encoding in 720p as I want to make it no bigger than a DVD9 AVCHD and these films are just too long for that being good in 1080p.

And that's interesting about TTT being broadcast in the Extended Edition. How come Warner allowed that? Or was it just some kind of a mistake, like when some TV in UK broadcast the 97 version of SW SE recently?

Lord of the Rings - TTT and ROTK "REFORGED" edit... (* cancelled project * - drive failure)

I have the whole trilogy EE in HD, I just always assumed, that someone just put in the EE scenes from an upscaled DVD (which is definitely true for FOTR as you can clearly see the drop in quality, but it did always seem to me, that TTT EE scenes were natively HD, I just couldn't get my head around where would anyone get those scenes in HD. So TTT was broadcasted in EE? That's good, because IMO that it is a far superior version (unlike for the other two, where the EE scenes are just a nice addition).

And these HDTV captures are actually superior in quality to the recently released Blu-Rays, as they are the same transfers but the Blus suffer from heavy DNR and edge enhancement and other nasty digital "enhacement" artifacts, which were not present in the broadcasts. I'm dreading we might get something like that for STAR WARS on Blu-Ray.

OK, my STAR WARS project is nearing completition and I think I will start working on this afterwards. I must figure out some technical problems first, I'm gonna be working in HD, although it will probably only be 720p as I'm gonna be using a lot of the extended editions footage, which is only available on DVD. I'll split both movies into the three separate storylines first and then start intercuting between them in a different order then it is in the film. In TTT I will be cutting some of the action scenes and replacing them with some Frodo scenes from ROTK up to the spider scene, like it is in the book. This way I'll make TTT a more story based movie and ROTK a shorter movie.

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now
Time

Thanks for the information Ady, it sounded a little far fetched to me, but then, it wouldn't be the first time Lucasfilm gave us a fuckup like that and they had to scan the film just for the broadcast. Or maybe they did an HD transfer for the DVD already, only the quality wasn't all that great and perhaps in a lower resolution than 1080p but higher then SD? Does it look like it is the same transfer when compared to the DVD (the same color problems, the same framing etc.)?

Also, Ady, could you please check your ESB reconstruction thread, I posted a question for you there, thanks :-)

That's exactly it: more "Star Warsy." And as you mentioned the fanedits, that's one of the reasons I want to know about the master for TPM HDTV broadcast, as far as I know, there is no HD fanedit of TPM, so I was playing with the idea of stealing some ideas (and soundtracks as I know jackshit about sound-editing) from the SD edits out there and making an HD one, but if the HD version we have is just an upscale of DVD, that would be good for nothing, really. I can't even compare the two as I don't have Ep1 on DVD (only on VHS) so I'd really appreciate some info.

TMP is my favorite (or the least hated) of the prequels, it used to be Ep3 but having watched the PT recently (with my friend who's never seen any SW film, so I showed her the OT and she wanted to see the PT too) I realized that Ep3 is totally riddiculous in it's attepts to be deadly serious, so although it is really bad compared to the OT, Ep1 has a kind of lighthearted playfulness about it and watching it bears a kind of a childhood nostalgia for me, so it is much less painfull than the other two :-)

So, does anyone know what is actually the source of the Ep1 HDTV broadcast? I want to know because Ep1 is the only one I have just in 720p, so if it is sourced from an SD master, it's not really worth getting in 1080p.

The Empire Strikes Back "1980 Theatrical version" Reconstruction - Adywan (Released)
Time

Doing my partly despecialized edition of Empire (for which I'm using this reconstruction) I came across some problems. It seems that some original shots, which are followed by an SE addition, were trimmed by a few frames (eg. the Wampa's hand falling on the ground when Luke cuts it of, or the shot from Falcon's cockpit before the shot of Vader's shuttle leaving Bespin is added). If Ady reads this I'd like to ask how he dealt with these in this reconstruction - in other words: will the reconstruction 5.1 mix fit with GOUT and consequently my TESB:PDE?

I've read somewhere, that there is no digital HD master for Phantom Menace (as it is the only one of the prequels which wasn't shot digitally and when they made the DVD master, they made it only SD - 1024x576 I'd guess) so that the HD broadcast was sourced from an upscaled DVD master. Can someone confirm/falsify that information? It does look a little bit like that, when you look at it.

I didn't have a chance to listen to the 5.1 in Jedi on a 5.1 setup so if anyone has, I'd like some feedback on that (I'm not sure how well the 5.1 upmix of the pliced in 2.0 worked out).

Also, the 97 SE reconstruction is just an idea for the possible future :-) The idea there is that with KGAr footage it would be possible to make it almost seamless as, unlike the GOUT, the anamorphic video wouldn't stand out in the HD footage. I'm definitely not doing it unless I get the 97 5.1 mix (does anyone know where I could get that?).

I'm almost done with Empire. I'm doing it the same way as the others - adjusting Adywan's AVCHD to fit to the GOUT sound, only for Empire of course using Ady's reconstruction for the original footage. There were some problems as it seems that some original shots, which were folowed by an SE addition were trimmed by a few frames (eg. the Wampa's hand falling on the ground when Luke cuts it of, or the shot from Falcon's cockpit before Vader's shuttle leaving Bespin is added). Yeah, I said that somewhere in the thread before, but from what I hear the 2004 soundmix of Jedi was quite ok, yet I'd still like to make another mix using the superior 1997 mix and I was also thinking about making a 1997 SE reconstruction like Adywan did for his TESB AVCHD.

You can easily do it yourself, just use TS Muxer to demux the audio, use whatever software to lower/rise the volume (I'm sure you can find a free program for it) and remux again like with the fix. But I just tried it on my speakers and though the volume was pretty high, it definitely didn't seem speakers blowing to me.

I don't know, the volumes of the tracks are kept as they were in the sources (HD Broadcast and GOUT) the Czech dub is sourced from a very old copy of a copy VHS so it doesn't seem likely it would be the best of the 3. I'm fine with the sound and won't be doing anything with it anymore (exept maybe eventually adding a different mix if I find one). Can anyone help me get the 1997 LD 5.1 audio for Jedi?

Yeah, I just put that together quickly and the out of sync sound is just one of the issues there, but like I said, it's just for fun.

BTW: I'm planning to reinstal my system soon and I won't be starting work on Empire before that.

I'm starting work on Empire v2.0. I wanted to give Vegas another shot with this but it doesn't recognise m2ts as video and it keeps crashing on me whenever I atempt doing something more complicated in it so I'll probably stick to Power Director :-(

I'm currently removing the pulldown on Ady's reconstruction DVD.

Are there any alternate sound mixes available for TESB?
