Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

It’s taking ages to render from these 4K files - 18 hours elapsed and 12 hours remaining. It’s probably because I’m rendering from a 5TB USB3 drive, since I don’t currently have enough space for the files on the internal drives.

Before anyone asks, it will be 1080p - I tested it and there would be virtually no benefit in releasing this in 4K and everything would take four times as long and have to be 4 times bigger.

And it is GOUT synced - I replaced the missing frames with just black frames, as I felt that for a Grindhouse version, that was the best solution. I think none of the missing frames are in shots altered in the SE, so for some future cleaned up version, the missing frames (or to make sure they match, the entire shots) could be replaced with the BD.

No correct guesses so far 😉

A cleaned up version of the complete 35 mm scan?

SSE - Grindhouse - 35mm Jedi, the last one missing?

Well, minus the cleanup 😄
Yes - I’m currently rendering a complete 35mm Grindhouse version of ROTJ - TN1 expressed several times that they had no plans to release a grindhouse version of ROTJ and since we now have 35mm transfers of both SW and ESB, and I do have a complete 4K scan of an LPP print, I decided to go ahead and do it.
Actually, at first, I just wanted a source for my comparison gallery for Jedi, to use instead of GOUT but then I thought why not release the whole thing, since I’m already doing it. It’s just basic color correction and nothing else, so it’s shaky with lots of grain, dirt and scratches, but for those who enjoy that grindhouse experience, it shoud serve very well - and the colors aren’t faded at all.

Though the scan had a very heavy blue cast and was very dark, so I still had to do a lot of hokery-pokery to get the colors to look decent, and each reel, and sometimes each scene, needed completely different settings, so that also means it can hardly be considered a color reference. Pretty much all scans are like that before correction, so 35mm scans can only be considered a color reference, if they were color-corrected by someone actually looking at the 35mm print being projected traditionally.

I don’t think that’s it. He said it was something “many” people would be very happy about. I think most people wouldn’t care much for anything TPM related.

Oh, you’d be surprised how many people would be happy about that one, but no, that’s not it (and someone else is already working on that one anyway - http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/THE-PHANTOM-MENACE-THEATRICAL-HD-Toppers-Version/id/17137). Think broader than Despecialized 😉

Info Wanted: Averaging the various versions of the 2004 master?
Time

There are some scenes in the HDTV versions, where the compression is downright awful - well at least in Schorman’s version but with his attention to detail and the huge bitrate of those releases, I have to assume that it is present even in the best available sources and I was hoping that maybe that could be helped a little by averaging the different sources but I don’t know enough about the process - I just assumed the program would compare the three or more sources and only keep what they all have in common, thus eliminating some artifacts.

In the scene, where Leia meets the Ewok in ROTJ, I actually ended up rotoscoping the original eyes into the BD footage, rather than using the full HDTV shots, because the difference in compression was stupendous.

OK, encoding is done on both the MKV and AVCHD versions. I’m probably gonna give them a watch tomorrow and then I should be all set for the Sunday release. 😃

I have another surprise release currently rendering that many people here will, I think, be very happy to see. 😃 Let’s see if you can guess what it is 😉 Clue: It’s the last one missing at this point.

Watching it now (thank god for the commentary tracks - keep it interesting even when watching the movie 4th time in a month) 40 minutes in and I already found this weird bug, where during one shot it keeps flashing images from another shot but that’s the kind of thing that I can fix using an avisynth script during encoding, so for now I haven’t found anything that would require re-rendering the whole movie.

Harmy, the LD commentary is in my LD Audio archive on myspleen. It’s in lossless form there. I have it posted as a LCR wav file with the 1993 Audio mix in the Left and Right channels ducked during the talking portions, and the commentary in the Center channel. You can get that from myspleen or I can send you an ac3.

I already got it from CatBus, but thanks 😃

I’m rendering ROTJ v2.5 right now - ETA 10hrs. But I made so many changes since the last workprint and the project file got so big and complicated that I’m sure when I watch it, I will find that I forgot to turn some layer on or off or something stupid like that and will probably have to re-render but I have everything else ready, so currently, the intended release date is this Sunday.

Das Imperium schlägt zurück - Despecialized Edition 2.1 (German) (Released)

There are actually a few more differences in the v2.1 version.
These shots have been replaced with cleaned TN1 Grindhouse shots as well:

And before anyone asks, no there will not be a v2.1 English version - going through all the logistics of putting out a new release just because of these few shots, when I’m planning on having a v2.5 version with a lot more fixes done quite soon simply isn’t worth it.

Putting the finishing touches on the last couple of things I wanted to do for ROTJ v2.5 - now I’ll have to put them into the cut and render the whole thing out - hopefully I’ll have enough time to do that today and render over-night.
One last thing I’m missing (I thought I had this but can’t find it) is the 1993 LD commentary. Does anybody have this? And ideally, I’d love it if someone would be willing to make me one like I always made for the other movies - with the silences filled with the '93 stereo mix.

Yeah, that was a good example of the kind of thing I usually do.
For those who don’t remember, here it is:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/158521

You can actually see the process in my video documentary as well:
https://youtu.be/QXifjbxZDAM?t=15m39s
Though the compressed youtube video doesn’t quite show just how grainy those shots were.
