The question is, isn't the laser blast being the wrong colour in 9 a problem caused by the 1993 telecine, that wasn't present in the original prints, similarly to the yellow Tie blasts in Empire? I think it might be, because it has a distinct red outline.

I've got a bit of a dilemma. I started working on this and I just can't decide whether to change some of the stuff or not. These are all the shots from 005's list that I'm not sure about changing:

That is not to say that I'm changing all the others, there are some shots where the difference is so insignificant that I'm definitely not changing them. I'm just not sure about these yet. What do you guys think?

To answer your questions:

1) I am going to make a new version of these when the Blus come out and make a few further adjustments to all the films - to name some:

SW:

Get rid of even more Dewbacks and Rontos.

Put back the TRACTOR BEAM sign. I was actually thinking about something like this little compromise using Erikstormtrooper's Engli-Besh font:

ESB:

Remove some more Cloud City windows (maybe)

ROTJ:

Improve the cut to the Sailbarge FX shot (not yet sure how).

Give mr. Shaw his eyebrows back.

 

2) There is some 97 SE used but very little - the ghosts in ROTJ and whatever Ady used for his ESB AVCHD, which was the main source of my ESB.

Well, I guess I had it coming, I did the same thing to Ady's ESB reconstruction thread with this, only the force is stronger with Ady :-)

Sorry, I made the Partly Despecialized Edition for watching in HD, this is only gonna be an anamorphic DVD (I'll have to use a lot more GOUT for this one). I'm gonna do a new version of the PDE with possibly some more despecializations when the Blu-Rays come out, but for now I'm fine with the current PDE of Jedi to watch in HD.

RETURN OF THE JEDI - ORIGINAL THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION

This is a little Leia to Adywan's Luke. It is an anamorphic reconstruction of the original cut of ROTJ using the HD broadcast of the 2004 version, the GOUT and GKAR German anamorphic digi broadcast of 97SE.

FYI: The whole ending celebration is completely back to the original state and the whole film is colour corrected - Here's a colour correction comparison, left is SE right is the RECONSTRUCTION:

 

The colours are not 100% faithful because it's a JPG but it gives you the general idea - it's pretty subtle for the most part.

OK, I got my good computer back from service and that means I can start working on this soon. 

As I already despecialized and colour corrected about 90% of Jedi for my partly-despecialized edition AVCHD and I (along with other people) thought it was pretty much succesful even at 1080p and some people asked me to do an SD version, I decided to make a full theatrical recontruction DVD. I'd like to thank Ericstormtrooper, who said he'd try and help me get the unmasking (and I hope the Rancor as well) scene from GKAR Jedi so I should be able to use that.

exept probably some recomposited FX shots.

I'd be very gratefull if someone could point out some further changes that are not on this list if there are some. And also if there are some more things that were not changed in 97 apart from Rancor, eyebrows and ghosts...

Like I said, I already despecialized like 90% for PDE, so it shouldn't really take long to do this but I don't wanna rush it either...

I'm planing on doing both PAL and NTSC versions of this.

Oh, yeah, it would be foolish to think that there isn't anything else George could ruin about these movies. He could add some CG aliens to the Cantina scene (probably would be from the PT as they are alredy made) as George was never happy with that scene. We might get a new CG Jabba in ROTJ to match the one added in ANH, we could get a new CG Wampa and Taun-Tauns, the stormtroopers could get colours on their uniforms like their PT clone counterparts... Need I to continue? Didn't think so...

OK, I was gonna keep it to myself at least until I started working on it, but as the demand is starting to pile up, I'm gonna come out and say it: As I already despecialized and colour corrected about 90% of Jedi for my partly-despecialized edition and I (along with other people) thought it was pretty much succesful even at 1080p and some people asked me to do an SD version, I decided to make a full theatrical recontruction DVD. I'm gonna start it's own thread once I start working on it when I get my good computer back from the servis (hopefully next week)... Here goes a request to anyone who could PM me links for TB or KGAR Jedi so that I'd have to use the least amout of GOUT possible (well, I basically just need the unmasking scene now, unless I'm forgetting something).

That's actually perfect continuity:

ANH:R 576p

ESB:R 720p

ROTJ:R 1080p

 

The only problem with that concept is that you would have to continue:

TPM:R 2K (possible but improbable)

AOTC:R 4K (impossible)

ROTS:R 8K (impossible)

But maybe for the PT you could just stick to 1080p.

Don't have to use GOUT? OMG, what about Lapti Nek? Or are you leaving that out altogether?

I never liked Lapti nek and hated jedi rocks. That scene will be getting a bit of a change

 

Oh, that's OK then, I was just afraid you were gonna leave Jedi Rocks in. But for me the problem with Jedi Rocks isn't as much the music as the CG cartoons, I'd take a p(m)uppet over CG any day...

The good thing about ROTJ:R is that i don't have to use any GOUT footage at all so no upscaling issues, so this one was possible. The one shot i would need to use from a lower quality source would be the original Anakin ghost, but i can use one of the SE broadcasts for that as it worked perfectly well with the Emperor in my ESB 97' 1080p reconstruction . But who knows what will be on the Blu-rays

Yeah, FAQ could work. But I thought more like on the example of GOUT, have a short article that would go like:

Although the original versions of the films were relaesed on DVD in 2006 this cannot be thought of as a true preservation, because 1993 LaserDisc [with a hypertext to some site that explains what a LD is] masters were used as a source and therefore the DVDs suffer from following problems:

1) Non-anamorphic transfers.

[A bunch of pictures (maybe gifs to show it in motion) illustrating the problem]

[A link to a more in-depth analysis of the problem]

2) Execive amounts of grain:

[A bunch of comparison pictures (maybe gifs to show it in motion) illustrating the problem]

[A link to a more in-depth analysis of the problem]

3) DVNR smearing

[A bunch of comparison pictures (maybe gifs to show it in motion) illustrating the problem]

[A link to a more in depth analysis of the problem]

and so on...

It should be more graphic IMHO, like have moving gifs and maybe highlighting or zooming on the issue in question in the pictures. I'm even toying with an idea of doing a documentary that I'd put on youtube  when I get my good computer back. I hope you wouldn't mind me citing some of your execelent articles in it.

I think this is completely awesome and you're a great writer Zombie, I already knew like 95% of the information in these articles but I still enjoyed reading them :-) The only thing I would suggest is that there should be a simpler article for each of the main issues and then you could click "for a more in depth analysis" that would be your editorial article. These articles are great for us who are already passionate about these issues but if someone who isn't familiar with the problems read those articles they might feel overwhelmed with information, so it would be nice to give them a simplified matter of fact articles that would show rather than describe (more comparison pics, maybe even clips). I might try and put something together myself but I'm having my good computer repaired now and it may take up to a month so I don't even have photoshop now.
