No oot on Blu means death of new petition?
Time

That is quite obviously a double dip. He's already backing up on the "these versions don't exist anymore" stand and now it's supposedly just too expensive to restore them, so I totally expect a double dip, only this time around he can't give us non anamorphic 93 masters, it's Blu-Ray. So he'll probably say that it will depend on how well the SE Blu-Rays sell and if they sell well enough, then he's gonna remaster the OOT for the money he makes on the SE...

One of the other lost opportunities is not having Lando die so that the cynical Han actual possesses latent use of The Force he claims to have seen no evidence of in ANH by correctly predicting the destruction of The Falcon.
I'm not sure what that scene is trying to get across except for that maybe Han's bad feelings are nothing to worry about, but its not really ever brought up again. I do feel like its a lost opportunity, always have.

Not only that, in the SE Lucas made sure that there is no doubt that Han is not force sensitive by adding ropes to the shot where Han miraculously hangs by only the tips of his toes from the skiff (the ropes disappear in the next shot) and replacing his "It's ok, trust me!" line with "It's ok, I can see a lot better."

Harmy's STAR WARS TRILOGY "Partly Despecialized Edition" HD. !!! These version are now obsolete - Look for Despecialized Editions instead!!!
Time

I'm glad to hear you managed to make it work :-)

The yellow subs were hard coded in the source.

I won't be doing the SD version of Jedi any time soon because I'll be starting school and have other projects in progress now. But it is still on eventually...

And as far as v3.0 goes, I will probably be doing third version in a year, which will be sourced from the Blu-Rays, then I'll start thinking about further changes, for the time being I'm personally satisfied with the cuts, but like I said, I don't really mind the cloud city SE additions, unless they produce continuity errors, the dewbacks and rontos are a different story but I got rid of most of them, there is very few of them left and they're mostly just in the background but if I figure out a way of getting rid of them and make it look good, I'll do it.

And I did replace the shots of the Mos Eisley check and the imps getting shot, I just didn't use ANH:R.

Who Felt Return Of The Jedi Was A Letdown At The Time?
Time

When I was a kid, I really liked Jedi, it was my favourite, SW was 2nd and ESB 3rd. And to be honest, when TPM came out when I was 11 it became my favourite at the time. (and yes, I still have a bit of nostalgia for it and enjoy watching it tons more than ROTS, not to mention AOTC but that's a different story, of the OT I liked ROTJ the best and at the time I really liked the SE for that matter). As I got older I didn't like it as much. I had no particular reason, I didn't analyse the film, it was just that in time I'd play the ROTJ VHS less and less and ESB more and more with SW keeping its steady 2nd place (and I totally let go of the PT). What made me realize the actual reasons why Jedi wasn't as good as the other two (I never really gave it much thought) was this article: 50 REASONS WHY RETURN OF THE JEDI SUCKS , similarly to how I realized the PT sucked and I didn't like it much anymore (I was 11, 13 and 16 when they came out and so they kinda grew with me and then I've outgrown them) but I couldn't have given you reasons why, until I saw redlettermedia's reviews.

But I still really enjoy watching Jedi very much (especially in its original version) and with all its flaws it is a fun film to watch.

The changes that you've made are well executed but unfortunately for me there still to much SE for me to enjoy the edit. I hope I don't sound critical or unappreciative because your work is really good and I knew exactly what was changed and what wasn't before I downloaded and watched it. I'm also aware this was a project for yourself and your viewing habits that you were kind enough to share with us, so good work considering the source material you have to work with.

Well, I must say I wouldn't mind less SE in my edit but those shots that I left in in Mos Eisley are god awful in GOUT so I had to kinda strike a balance between de-SEing and watchable quality.

I do have a couple of questions.

Did you use any of Adywan's Revisited (which I've not seen) in your edit. The reason I ask is I'm led to believe Adywan painstakingly removed the Ronto that walks in front of the Landspeeder at the Stormtrooper checkpoint and other such things. Did you use these shots?

No, I did use them for my version 1.0 but they were still just an upscale from DVD (although anamorphic) and with all due respect to Adywan, I must say I'm not a big fan of rotoscoping the changes out this way, now instead of the Ronto, a big blurry cloud starts moving over the screen. Don't get me wrong, Ady did an amazing job on these but I still prefer just cutting in enhanced GOUT.

Also I noticed that the blinking garbage compactor creature and tractor beam display text remain from the 2004 SE's. Is there not HD material from the '97 SE available for these shots?

Well, I don't mind the blinking creature but I would have liked to change to TRACTOR BEAM back to English, but I couldn't find the 97 SE of starwars anywhere. But the 97 SE is not available in HD, it is just an anamorphic TV capture.

And the removal of the Han and Jabba confrontation leaves a straight cut rather than the dissolve seen in the '77 theatrical. I assume there's not enough frames available on the ends of either scene to achieve the dissolve.

That is exactly the case. Notice that even without a transition, the shot that follows is slightly out of sync with sound because of the missing frames. Luckily the next shot is a bit longer in the SE so it was fixed rather easily after that.

I should get to the other two films soon and I look forward to them.

I hope you enjoy them :-)

Save Star Wars Dot Com
Time

Great article, but I've found a bug in it:

In 1997, they were still so popular that they collectively grossed over $200 million in an altered re-release. That year, however, George Lucas had this to say about the altered "Special Edition", quoted in American Cinematographer in February:

"There will only be one. And it won't be what I would call the 'rough cut', it'll be the 'final cut.' The other one will be some sort of interesting artifact that people will look at and say, 'There was an earlier draft of this.'... The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition]...I think it's the director's prerogative, not the studio's, to go back and reinvent a movie."

I think he didn't say that in 1997 but in 2004. Note that he's talking about the DVD version, why would he say that in 1997?

ROTJ:

I don't know if anyone has already mentioned it, but one of my personal little annoyances is when the Gonk Power Droid is being tortured by a branding iron to his feet. The irons never connect to the feet, yet the steam shoots up (from little holes in the feet for the effect).

So please:

1. Let the branding iron actually touch his feet.

2. Make it look like the steam is in the 'shape' of the iron (so not coming from small holes)

3. Maybe an afterglow, when the iron rises afterward.

Note that I'll be happy as a clam with only #1. 2 and 3 are mere suggestions for further rounding the effect.

Please cut that out altogether, the idea of torturing droids is wrong and the shot is apparently there for a laugh (just remember those sounds the droid makes... got it? and now remember the sounds of the "comic relief" robots in the SE Mos Eisley sequence) and torture should be no laughing matter.

Info: DVNR smearing in GOUT not in the master...? Or is the 1995 release a different master altogether...?
Time

The gout masters weren't sourced from the original negatives (the O-negs were in a pretty bad shape and were only restored for the SE), I'm sure others can back me up on this. The 1993 transfers were sourced from well worn IPs (inter positives - 1st generation copies of the O-neg used for making inter-negatives, which were used for making theatrical prints) and that's why the transfers were very dirty and the DVNR was applied so heavily.

The reason for the wait to next year is Clone Wars season 2 is coming out later of this year.  And Lucas Tuskegee movie will come first, they have first priority.

And also most people wouldn't have the money to buy both if they came out at the same time, so it would be one or the other. This way people are gona buy CW2 and the na year later they will buy the three butchered movies and their three shitty "bonus" materials...

AVCHD to DVD
Time

I need to convert AVCHD to DVD but as I've never worked with SD DVDs apart from backing up with DVD Shrink, I have no idea what would be the best way to go about this. I'd like to create motion menus for the DVD and if possible, I'd prefer to use freeware. Thanks for the help I'm confident I going to receive as OT.com has never yet failed me in this. :-)
